christmas shopping turns to chaos inside the great mall. >> first responders are getting vaccinated. tonight you'll hear from first one of the firefighters to get the vaccine. >> i'm tracking our next storm on the way. all the details in the accuweather forecast. abc7news at 11:00 starts right now. during what is traditionally one of the biggest shopping days of the year, chaos at a south bay mall. while some shoppers ran others were locked inside stores for hours, all while police investigated a shooting. with that we say good evening and thank you for joining us. police first arrived at the great mall at about 5:30 and gave the all clear about 90

minutes ago. news reporter matt boone is outside the mall with more on how all of this up folded. matt, not a lot of details provided by police. >> reporter: deon, a lot of confusion, especially earlier in the mall. it's a large mall and as people started rushing out, others followed. police arrived on scene. they said they were here to investigate a shooting but still very little detail on victims or a suspect. >> everybody's just running. >> it was a panic. >> shoppers rurkd to the exits. some stemtfully dashing into stores. >> everybody started running. >> brendan was on a break near an emergency exit. >> all of a sudden people were running out the exit. >> he dent hear any begun shots but word traveled fast. >> i heard there was an active shooter.

broke tonight. if you'd like alerts like this in the future, the abc news app is free to download in your an story. devastating effect in california. for the 10th day in a row california set a record for covid hospitalizations with nearly 16,500. that is more than double the previous peak reached in july. the bay area icu capacity has dropped again and is now at 12.2%. that has to be at 15% or higher for any safety restrictions to be removed. the entire bay area is in its first weekend under the state's strict lockdown. now it's been authorized by the fda, moderna's vaccine is being distributed. the vaccine got a procedural endorsement from the cdc today and this is an exclusive look at the distribution center in mississippi. distribution should -- may be made easier than it was for the

pfizer vaccine which has to be kept ultra cold in specialized freezer. the fda authority the pfizer vaccine a week ago. california is expecting to receive 672450 doses of the pfizer vaccine to start. the state has a tier system when it comes to who gets vaccinated first. health care workers and nursing home residents are at the top. the state then plans to move to essential workers like police and those in high risk groups, people who have a medical condition or are over the age of 65. the gem public will start to get vaccinated in the spring or even summer. in almeida county, firefighters have been chosen to be the first to get the received. we spoke to one of them. >> reporter: brian has been a firefighter for 18 years. >> we are out on a lot of calls

with the community and the benefit versus the risk outweighs a lot of it. >> reporter: he's trained and equipped to face a wall of flames but this was a moment that finally a bit of confidence surfaced. >> i felt a little guilty. i wish i could have given my dosage to my father that's 69 years old. but then again i knew if i got the vaccine i'd be able to help somebody else's family member. >> reporter: almeida county firefights responded to more than 29,000 medical emergencies calls. many telling them this vaccine gillis them peace of mind. how many will get it? so the almeida county fire department, we have approximately just 350 personnel that will be eligible. >> reporter: first responders vaccinated on friday. almeida county has 13,650 doses of the pfizer covid-19 vaccine. >> there is three different

disease specialist. he oversaw a remdesivir clinical trial at the hospital, the drug used to treat covid 1. barbara lee received her vaccine today. she tweeted this photo saying building public trust in this vaccine will be crucial if we want to turn the corner and crush this virus. lee says she received the vaccine at the recommendation of the attending physician of congress. the army general in charge of distributing covid vaccines for operation warp speed is taking responsibility for the short fall in the number of pfizer doses delivered to more than a dozen states. >> it was my fault. i gave guidance. i am the one that approved the forecast sheets. i am the one that approved the allocations. right. there is no problem with the process. there is no problem with the pfizer vaccine.

fight over federal reserve emergency powers. but a democratic aide said that the package is now being finalized and will be unveiled tomorrow. the bill would provide a temporary $300 a week unemployment benefit and a $600 stimulus check to most americans. california craft brewries are suing the governor over the state's shutdown orders. the craft brewers association filed a lawsuit on thursday alleging that public health orders unfairly target small beer makers. currently no breweries or wineries are allowed to open in the bay area but the beer makers expect the state to reverse back to the system. under that system, breweries are required to serve food in order to keep outdoor tables open but that suit claims that others in the industry like wineries do not have to follow the same regulation. on the peninsula, san mateo police aring look for a spec

today fallen soldiers were remembered with holiday wreaths. this was the scene for the annual wreath across america event. in total, 1.7 million wreaths were placed on the head stones of fallen soldiers. organizers had to do the ceremony socially distanced. arlington held a virtual event for people to watch. a similar seen at mare islandle in vallejo. about a thousand wreaths were placed by volunteers during the ceremony. it was outdoors with safety measures in place. warrior star stephan hansen a od his family were handing out goodies and food to more than a thousand families at the coliseum today. each got a $250 gift card. you can see the wife and kids
