in a little bit. a kidnapping that happened three decades ago. he will be arraigned. 9-year-old michaela garecht was kidnapped in hayward back in 1988 and a palm print led investigators to this man david misch. he is already behind bars and awaiting trial for a separate double murder. the kidnapping happened 32 a ago 32 years ago. she saw her scooter a few yards away. when she went to go grab it a man grabbed her and put her in his car and drove away. >> the crime shocked not only the local community of hayward and alameda county, but the entire bay area and the nation. it was so brazen, so ruthless but clearly planned.

>> investigators believe it was misch who left a partial palm print on michaela's scooter. he is set to be arraigned at 8:30 this morning. michaela's mother has spent the last 32 years for answers. what she still wants people to know about michaela. >> she read me a powerful statement. >> i came to a place of accepting that michaela was no longer alive but that was wrapped up in the acceptance of michaela sitting on fluffy pink clouds and soaring among the stars what i did not envision was my daughter as a dead child. >> reporter: now sharon who thought her daughter's case would never be solved after 32 years is faced with an

vaccine last week and also learning yesterday that more than 100,000 doses of the moderna vaccine have now made its way into the state of california. reporting live this morning, julian glover, abc7 news. >> thank you, julian. happening today london breed will update the city's response to covid-19. that will happen at noon. the director of public health dr. grant colfax to address the crush of coronavirus cases. today the san francisco board of supervisors expected to talk about getting students back in class for in-person learning. the san francisco unified school district planned on reopening a few schools in january and now that's not happening. negotiations between the district and the teacher's union broke down over working conditions. the board of supervisors is expected to consider a resolution today urging the school district to develop a comprehensive plan to the safe return of in-person learning. the ceo of the company that helped to develop pfizer's covid-19 vaccine says he's confident the vaccine works

against a new muitatitation of coronavirus. this new variant is believed to be more contagious and lead to more severe illness. first discovered in the united kingdom. as of yesterday morning the cdc reports more than 6,400 shots of pfizer vaccine have been given out nationwide and moderna is testing to see if its vaccines will work against that mutation. anthony fauci will get his first dose of the coronavirus vaccine. the timeline on when he thinks most americans will begin to get it. jobina. >> thank you, reggie. good morning. dr. anthony fauci is on "gma" and says most americans will begin receiving the vaccine in the spring but it may take a while for everyone to be included. >> we likely will be able to start vaccinating people in the broader category, somewhere around the end of march, beginning of april. how long it takes to get everyone who needs to be vaccinated, vaccinated is really

>> hey, what's going on. yeah, we have bryce, dallas and that's jurassic 6 when t-rex takes over christmas. here's a look at what is going on with our dense fog advisory. just solano county and that's where the thickest of the fog is right now and it is starting to spill across other neighborhoods. as you can see here, we have one mile in santa rosa and half a mile in napa and eastern parts of contra costa county and alameda counties and the winds, there could be more fog along the san pablo bay and slip down the shoreline, excuse me, as we head through the morning commute. that's something we'll definitely keep an eye on. definitely not as widespread as yesterday. spare the air today and temperatures close to average. 56 to 62. as reggie mentioned, we have some rain coming up for santa and for you and i'll talk about it. first, let's get over to kumasi. >> thank you, mike.

new overnight, fire crews in san jose, they've put out this suspected gas fire at an office building. an engine returning from a call around 2:00 a.m. noticed smoke and flames coming from the building off of forest avenue. officials say it was a gas-fed fire but not sure what caused it. crews were able to contain it in 0 minutes. officials say moderate damage. today after more than 30 years the man xhwho kidnapped a killed michaela garecht will appear in court to face charges. it appears they now have that answer but there is so much that they still don't know. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live as we hear from michaela's dad. amy? >> police have wondered the same thing, reggie. they say this is one of the largest man hnhunts in the hayw police department's history. a case that gripped the bay area

for decades. here's a look at the man who they have arrested. 59-year-old david misch. he is in prison serving a sentence for another murder and he's waiting trial for the murder of two other people. now he is accused of killing 9-year-old michaela garecht. she was kidnapped in november 1988. 32 years ago. her parents say they are relieved to see an arrest but say closure may still take some time. >> for a long time, you know, i kept thinking she was still alive and i never really gave up hope, you know. but that's what can i say? i mean, it will be closure when he's dead.grabbed outside a hayward grocery store and thrown into a car. she was with a friend who witnessed the abduction. they matched a palm print at the scene to mitch. it was fremont police who tipped

>> reporter: jr stone, abc7 news. abc7 news will stay on top of this story. we sent out this push alert. download the app and enable push alerts. the virus is spreading out of control across california and here's a look at some of the latest numbers. more than 17,000 people in the state are hospitalized. icu numbers have jumped more than 60% with more than 3,600 people needing critical care. the seven-day average for new cases reached nearly 38,000 over the weekend. and here's a look at the current icu capacity. both the san joaquin valley and southern california regions are now at zero percent. the bay area has improved a little bit. we're at 13.7%. well, because the numbers haven't improved enough in certain regions, governor newsom is expected to extend the stay-at-home order. >> you can see as it relates to the stay-at-home that we are

likely. i think it's pretty self-evident that we need to extend the original dates. >> the governor made this announcement while giving his update on california's covid-19 response efforts yesterday. stay-at-home orders were set to expire in san joaquin county in one week. san mateo county is bringing in more hospital staff to expand its icu bed capacity. >> we're really concerned that the increase in cases across california and in the bay area and in san mateo county is putting a huge strain on our hospitals. >> hospital staff from around the country are coming in to create ten more icu beds at sequoia hospital in redwood city. they will be there for at least 30 days. the county's $4.5 million investment strengthens the ability to provide urgent hospital care. the beds could also be made available to people from outside the county. this morning one of the

shooting from hawaii right up into the gulf of alesk alaska ae over this ridge and loose that moisture which is what we're dealing with right now. what is it going to do? keep the fog down a little bit and allow temperatures to warm a couple degrees especially in the east bay valleys where the fog held on so long and some highs in the 40s and mid 50s and tonight we're looking at temperatures that will hang around freezing levels inland and upper 30s to low 40s around the bay. my accuweather seven-day forecast. maybe a degree or two warmer the next day or two and kind of hard with those morning lows. so much colder and friday into saturday morning, sunday into monday morning, those are our two storms that are ones on the storm impact scale and they'll be coming in just in time to keep us from getting into another fire threat. kumasi, reggie. >> thank you, mike. new at 6:00, help is on the way. the vaccine shipments that just arrived in the north bay.

welcome back, evereveryone. in the east bay they will be getting extra presents. filled with toys for kids in need. the department held a toy drive last week for a nonprofit that helps the homeless and formally incarcerated. berkeley police say they couldn't do shop with a cop this year because of the pandemic, but they still knew they wanted to do something for the community. >> some officers in our community services bureau we put
