of the coronavirus today. that is well below the daily average for the last week of 44,000. the state is setting the wrong type of records with hospitalizations. numbers climbed to 18,000 people with 3,700 of those in icu, intensive care. both single day highs. >> state wide intensive care availability fell below 2% today. here in the bay area there was a slight drop to 13.5%. as a surge in covid-19 cases fill up hospitals around the country there is a growing concern of the lack of medical personnel, what is happening in california hospitals and what we can all do to help. >> reporter: nurses and hospital staff at the heart of a stark video california health leaders released tuesday warning of the current surge. >> i am seeing nurses exhausted

and missing their families. >> reporter: tied directly to the surge in covid cases is a nationwide nursing shortage now affecting california hospitals. >> it exhausts even the best nurses. >> reporter: the spokesman for san jose regional medical center saying the hospital hired new nurses and staff and still is not enough. >> our nurses are handling it. but i don't know if they can handle it for the long-term. >> reporter: the traveling nurses that fill in the gaps have been grabbed all over the country by the different hospitals. now california is going into it later than the other states. a lot of the traveling nurses are already in contracts. >> reporter: she is as hospitals in california's central valley and inland empire are at risk of

good morning. thank you so much for joining us this morning. you are right now in california and there was a dramatic rise in cases post thanksgiving. just six weeks ago, the state alone hit 1 million cases. now it's up to 2 million. icus are also overwhelmed. what are you seeing on the ground? >> when i was on shift yesterday, i was looking at the patients we were admitting to the hospital in the icu. almost all of them had the same presenting complaint to the hospital, which was shortness of breath. we had patients in the waiting room for three, four hours with fever, cough, difficulty breathing. across the state, icu capacity is down and the hospitals around us are full and our icus are filling rapidly. >> despite the repeated warnings from health officials, it's predicted to be a busy travel day today.
