we will be under tighter safety restrictions until the number reaches 15%. california is the first state to report 2 million coronavirus cases driven by a surge in los angeles. abc news reports over the last hour more than 2 americans tested positive for covid-19 every second. u.s. cases seem to have plateaued due to a decrease in the midwest, but even so there are concerns about a possible new spike due to christmas travel and gatherings. the pandemic reshaped how we celebrate the holidays. one example a booming to go order for a holiday dinner staple. >> never seen anything like this. i am very grateful for the customers to come here and we do our best to speed it up. it is something we have never

recent inmates include felicity huffman and lori loughlin. to the north bay the graton casino called off plans for a massive new year's eve party. no reason was given for the cancellation. large indoor gatherings are not allowed in sonoma county because of the pandemic, but they are a sovereign nation and are not subject to local or public health orders. all passengers flying from the united kingdom to the u.s. need to prove they tested negative for the coronavirus starting on monday. the test has to be taken within 72 hours before departure. a surge caused by a new strain of the virus is behind the restrictions. all of it comes as the tsa reports screening flenearly 2 million passengers.

the california national guard has begun dispursing vaccinations to the front line troops. they loaded the first vaccines to be sent to service men and women in southern california. nurses, medical personnel and wildlife support were the first to be inoculated when the medicine arrived. the guard wants every member of the service to be vaccinated to protect the force and to show the vaccine is safe and effective. well it has been a problematic year for california's employment development department, and it is being reflected in a number of criminal investigations. there are currently 255 cases. last year at this time there were 14. twhi there have been numerous reports of fraud, including a recent revelation that prison inmates were being paid for claims. it is estimated the cost could be in the billions. abc 7 on your side has been investigating the issues for months now, and you can find

a return this year for the holiday dinner in san francisco. for the last 27 years the house of prime rib has been donating meals and this year 3,000 pounds of prime rib. instead of the sit down dinner the food was handed out in takeout boxes. they served about 1,400 meals and will given out another 1,300 meals tomorrow. they will hold a virtual church celebration tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. santa's helper wore a uniform and badge as oakland police handed out food to 108 families. officers identified the families

in need during the regular patrols. the donations were paid for by the police union. they have been organizing the give away for the last 30 years. the police department provided the video you see here in collaboration with walgreens collected more than 2,000 toys. the department bought more than 1,900 toys in a drive funded by donations from officers and staff. san francisco's gay men's chorus had an at home for the holidays annual concert. tonight the show went on virtually. what an undertaking. i appreciate the holiday sweaters. the tradition began 30 years ago at the castro theater at the height of the aids pandemic.

showers developing. spreading by 4:00 p.m. scattered showers for the evening hours. live now on doppler 7 we have the cloud cover. temperatures will not drop as much because of the insulation of the clouds. 40s, 50s, a live look. just a glorious view tonight. wet and breezy. a colder storm gets here on sunday night. on the storm impact scale it is a level one. christmas through early saturday, light to moderate rain. up to 30 miles per hour. some lingering showers early saturday morning. you will notice just an isolated shower in the north bay. by 1:00 the north bay is getting wet. spreading by 4:00 p.m. it is light in intensity. it is a fast mover. might be pockets of rain. friday night showers continue and into the hours of saturday morning before they taper and wind down. so your late saturday afternoon

and evening will be dry. terms of the rainfall total it will be a couple hundredths of an inch to up to .6 of an inch. this will turn to snow in the mountains up in the sierra above 5500 feet. expecting up to two feet of snow for the highest peaks. travel will be difficult. we are all in shelter in place. not even a point. 8-18 inches of snow is expected at the 5,500 level. the next storm lower snow levels. temperatures first thing in the morning, mainly 40s. watch out for the dense fog in the valleys and plenty of cloud cover, breezy conditions. you will need the umbrella. upper 40 s to the lower 60s. it might feel muggy out there.
