it. rachel scott tells us, there is a bipartisan push to get the president to take action. >> reporter: the roughly $900 billion stimulus package congress approved earlier this week is awaiting president trump's signature. president-elect joe biden c criticizing him. the president has been critical of the bill, which includes aid for struggling americans and $1.4 trillion in government funding. >> it really is a disgrace. >> reporter: the president tweeting he has had many calls and meetings, demanding congress increase the amount of the stimulus checks from $600 to $2,000, writing, give our people the money. but his own team helped negotiate that bill. steve mnuchin made this promise earlier this week. >> people are going to see this money the beginning of next week. >> reporter: both republicans and democrats urging the

president to sign the bill. >> when we finally thought we'd be able to give people hope! that's what people need, hope! >> i hope the president looks at this again and reaches the conclusion that the best thing to do is to sign the bill. >> reporter: paymenaid ends today. >> we are facing the very real possibility of tens of millions of people losing their homes this winter during the height of covid-19. >> reporter: so now the bill is in the president's hands. he could sign it and get relief to the american people or veto it. that would force lawmakers back to washington to try to override the president. if he does nothing and hangs onto the bill for the next several day it is will expire and it will be up to the next congress to try this all over again and get relief to the american people. washington. meantime, california is still seting coronavirus

records over the holiday weekend. te state saw hospitalizations go up, edging closer to 19,000. there's been a new daily record every day since december 9th. and every day since december 3rd the number of people in the icu has created a new high. it is well below the daily average for the past week. the bay area saw its icu capacity rise a little. from yesterday, it was 9.8%. southern california and san joaquin valley regions are still at zero, but that doesn't mean people will be turned away when they go to the hospital. northern california remains above the 15% threshold and the only region without a stay-at-home order. the message has been clear in the bay area, stay home to stop the spread. in san rafael, signs are up like this one to encourage people to stay out of the stores and enjoy the holiday safely.

shoppers were out on this day after christmas on the hunt for sales and making annual gift returns. cornell bernard joins us live in the newsroom with more on the story, and they just could not stay away. >> reporter: yeah, those after-christmas shopping traditions continued. but as new cases continued to spike health officials have real concerns. >> i'm real surprised that there is a line today, yeah. >> reporter: julie flores waited patiently in that line outside the louis vuitton store. >> it's a nice bag but a little too big. i'm looking for something smaller. >> reporter: there was a line of shoppers outside gucci. temperature checks required at the door. >> i got to do some returns. didn't do a good job picking my girl's gift.

> . >> reporter: most limiting the number of people inside. some folks showed up because it's tradition. >> shop the day after christmas for the last 40 years, and just really sad that the stores are empty and worried about the people that work there, that they may be getting laid off. >> down the street, westfield shopping center was busier, making returns and of course looking for sales. >> reporter: crowds of shoppers at local malls, it's not what health officials want to see. >> my concern is if people gather together at places where they shop, especially indoors, we're going to see more transmission. >> reporter: with new covid cases spiking and icu bids running low, dr. willis fears another surge. >> may be too late to do something about this now, but we hope that everyone will take every precaution they can right now. the last thing we

another surge on top of the surge from thanksgiving. >> reporter: shop online if you can and keep wearing those masks. these days, it's all about staying safe and healthy. >> we cannot hammer that home enough, cornell, thank you. >> reporter: remember how december 23rd set a record in travel? we have seen a steep drop in people flying for the holiday. tsa numbers show not a lot of people were flying on christmas day and eve. it was at 616,000, on the 23rd, nearly 2.4 million going through american airports. covid testing is ramping up. we were at the fairgrounds in san jose where hundreds of cars

lined up for testing. 2200 cases have been reported in the last 24 hours. health officials fear cases will ramp up. testing will be held at the same location tomorrow. the kwanzaa celebration is going virtual this year because of the pandemic. over the next week, the village project will celebrate the seven principles of kwanzaa through social media. it will be held every day at 6:00 p.m. and end with a blues concert. kamala harris has a special message about her favorite principle. >> my favorite, i have to tell you, was always the one about self-determination. be the person you want to be and do the things you want to do, and do the things that need to be done. and that principle motivates me today as we seek to confront the challenges facing our country and build a brighter future for

garbage truck caught fire on the caesar chavez off ramp. that cab was up in flames. putting it out was a little tricky for firefighters, because all kinds of things that could have been tossed in the trash could have caught fire. no one was hurt. the fbi has now identified a person of interest in nashville, but an arrest has not been made. this is what investigators are focussing on. >> reporter: authorities reviewing surveillance video of a powerful explosion in downtown nashville on christmas morning. >> stay back until we figure out what's going on. >> reporter: the fbi is now in charge of the investigation and is still working to identify the human remains found at the scene. sources tell abc news authorities are searching properties associated with anthony quinn warner and are

working to discover whether he was involved with the explosion. >> our investigative team is turning over every stone to know as many details as possible to answer the question of who was responsible for this and also to understand why did they do this? >> reporter: investigators say just after 1:00 a.m., this rv was seen parked outside the at&t building. officers responded to a call about shots fired. when they approached the vehicle they heard a message warning people to evacuate. >> if you can hear this message, evacuate now. >> reporter: debris and smoke shooting hundreds of feet in the air. buck mccoy was in his bid whed the windows shook. >> all the glass came in from the living room. the front door became unhinged. >> it's always at abc 7.com.

we have fire and ice this holiday weekend. check it out. it's all courtesy of mother nature. start in hawaii where the kilauea volcano continues to spew lava from its crater. the u.s. geological survey captured the fiery display from a helicopter. and there's a huge lava lake growing t growing. it is about 600 feet deep, the same height as the washington monument. it is a white christmas in the sierra. you can see from cal trans cameras. this is the biggest storm to hit the mountains in some time, and some locations were expecting to get a foot and a half of snow or more by the end of the weekend. the first snow survey of the season is coming this wednesday. here in the bay area, all we have to contend with is a little benefit rain. drew tuma joining us, i love

your after christmas festive swatter by the way. >> yeah, it's going to be a chilly night. why not dress warmly. tomorrow we're going to track our next storm arriving with more rain across the bay area. tonight, though, live doppler seven showing you any wet weather we had earlier this morning has moved out and we're out to a pretty dry night ahead. look at the rainfall totals with this storm. a wide range. parts of marin and sonoma county getting drenched with this storm over the past 48 hours. santa rosa received more than an inch of rain. kent field, even more than that, closing in on two inches of rain. once you get out of the north bay you can see the numbers really drop off. in fact, the south bay really only registering a few hundreths of an inch. numbers will drop into the 30s and 40s tonight. right now we're mainly in the

50s, from so, we have a mix of stars and clouds. it will get cold in the north bay where the coldest city also drop well into the 30s. tonight is going to feel colder than last night. last night we hovered in the upper 40s to low 50s. along the bay shoreline. the overnight low in san jose. here's the story we're tracking, live done luppler 7, california pretty quiet as the storm system has moved out of here, brought snow to the sierra, wet weather to northern california. a brief break in the action tonight and there's our next storm. the path with this storm, it's going to move in to pretty much central california. so what that means for us, likely, the south bay will have the highest totals with this southern trajectory. the north bay will have lower

amounts because of the storm's path. on the storm impact scale late tomorrow night into monday, this level one system will track scattered showers. the highest totals likely in the south bay and it will remain breezy at times. the daylight hours tomorrow we're fine, we're dry. by the evening, clouds are increasing and here comes that rain starting in the south bay and along the peninsula and wrapping around overnight into the north bay. we'll likely track scattered showers through monday morning into monday afternoon as the storm moves through. even more snow coming to the sierra as well. rainfall totals again. you look at the path of the storm. the highest totals along the peninsula and in the south bay, i think a good estimate is around a quarter of an inch of rain there. much lower as you get into the north bay. i think many cities in the north bay will struggle to reach a tenth of an inch of wet weather. the accuweather seven-day forecast, dry during the day tomorrow. rain arrives at night.

finally now, one day after stunning many san francisco residents, the mysterious gingerbread monolith has crumbled. just like many gingerbread houses, icing was not enough to hold it up. this is what's left of the viral structure. pieces of a cook tie on a knocked-over metal frame. we were there as they taped off the remnants. it's not clear what caused it to fall apart, but wind and rain could be a factor. someone asked if i ate it, no, i did not eat it. i'm dion lim. thanks so much for joining us. we'll see you right back here in
