still no sign of my movement on the coronavirus relief bill. president trump is demanding lawmakers increase stimulus checks and refusing to sign the bill. as abc news reporter rachel scott tells us, there is a bipartisan push to get the president to take action. >> the roughly $900 billion stimulus package congress approved earlier this week is awaiting president trump's signature. joe biden criticizing his refusal to sign the bill writing this abdication of responsibility has devastating consequences. the president has been critical of the bill which includes aid to struggling americans. >> it realy is a disgrace. >> the president tweeting he has had many calls in meetings demanding congress increase the amount of the stimulus checks from 60 to $2,000 writing, give our people the money. but his own team helped negotiate that bill.

steve mnuchin made this promise earlier this week. >> people are going to see this money the beginning of next week. >> urging the president to sign the bill. >> when we finally thought we would be able to give people hope, that's what people need, hope. >> i hope the president looks at this again and reaches that conclusion that the best thing to do is to sign the bill. >> supplemental unemployment benefits expire today. and if the president continues to hold off, the government shuts down monday. the federal moratorium on evictions will end in less than a week. >> we are facing the very real possibility of tens of millions of people losing their homes this winter during the height of covid-19. >> so now the bill is in the president's hands. he could sign it and get relief to the american people or he could veto it. that would force lawmakers back to washington to try to override the president. but if he does nothing, for the next several days it will expire and it will be up to the next congress to try to do this all

over again and get relief to the american people. rachel scott, abc news washington. california is still setting coronavirus records. over the holiday weekend, the state how its hospitalizations go up, edging closer to 19,000. there has been a new daily record every day since december 9th. and every day since december 3rd, the number of people in the icu has set a new high. today it topped 4,000. the total number of new cases is a little more than 30,000. now, the bay area also saw its icu capacity rise from yesterday. it was 9.8%. a southern california and san juaquin valley regions are still at 0%. northern california remains above the 15% threshold, and the only region without a stay-at-home order. well, the message has been clear in the bay area. stay home to stop the spread. signs like this are up on the roads to encourage drivers to

stay out of the stores and to enjoy the holidays safely. now, despite the sobering covid-19 numbers, shoppers were out on this day after christmas on the hunt for sales and making those annual gift returns. once again, abc 7 news reporter joins us live in the news room with more on this story. >> those after christmas sopping traditions continued around the bay area today, but as new covid cases continue to spike, local health officials have real concerns. >> i am surprised. i'm very surprised that there is a line today, yeah. >> reporter: julie waited patiently in that line outside the louisville vuitton store. she's making a post christmas return. >> it was a really nice bag, but it's a little bit too big, so i'm looking for something smaller. >> across the street, there was a line of shoppers outside. gucci, temperature checks required at the store. >> i got to do some returns.

i didn't do a good job of picking my girl's gift. >> reporter: limiting the number of customers inside. not your typical day after christmas crowds on union square. fewer shoppers. some folks showed up because it is tradition. >> we shopped the day after christmas for the last 40 years and just really sad that the stores are empty and worried about the people that work there, that they might be getting laid off. >> reporter: westfield shopping center was definitely busy making returns and of course looking for sales. >> reporter: crowds of shoppers at local malls. it's not what health officials want to see. >> my concern is that if people gather together at places where they shop indoors, we will see more transmission. it could really explode from there. >> reporter: with covid cases spiking and icu beds running low, dr. willis fears another surge on top of a post-thanksgiving search. >> may be too late to do something about this now, but we

hope everyone will take every precaution they will right now. the last thing we need right now is another surge on top of that surge after thanksgiving. >> dr. willis says that post holiday surge can be avoided if we limit our exposure in public at stores, shop online if you can and avoid large gatherings and keep wearing those masks. these days it is all about staying safe and staying healthy. abc 7 news. >> can't repeat yourself enough on that note. thanks. now, remember how december 23rd set a travel record during the pandemic? what a difference a couple of days make. we have seen a steep drop in people flying for the holiday. not a whole lot of people were traveling on christmas eve or christmas day, especially when compared to last year. christmas day was at 616,000 and christmas eve at 846,000. on the 23rd, there were nearly 1.2 million passengers going through america's airports. santa clara county is ramping up covid-19 testing

after the christmas holiday. at the fairgrounds in san jose today where hundreds of cars lined up for drive-through testing. 2,200 new cases have been reported in just the last 24 hours. health officials fear case wills jump in the coming weeks as the holidays wrap up and more people get tested. testing will be held at the same location tomorrow. san francisco's 15th annual kwanza celebration is going virtual this year. over the next week, the village project will celebrate the seven principals of kwanza through social media. the events will be held every day at 6:00 p.m. and each program will end with a blues convert. the investigation into what happened in the heart of nashville on christmas day has taken a turn. san francisco put out its own spin on the monolith phenomenon in gingerbread.

developing news now in the christmas day rv bombing in nashville tennessee. the fbi has now identified a person of interest, but an arrest has not yet been made. andrew dim berg with the investigators and what they're focussing on. >> reporter: authorities reviewing surveillance video of a powerful explosion in downtown nashville on christmas morning. >> stay back until we figure out what's going on. >> reporter: the fbi is now in charge of the investigation and is still working to identify the human remains found at the scene. sources tell abc news authorities are searching properties associated with anthony quinn warner and are working to determine if he was responsible for the explosion. our investigative team is turning over every stone to make sure we know as many details as possible to answer the question of who is responsible for this and also to understand why did they do this. >> reporter: investigators say

just after 1:00 a.m., this rv was seen parked outside the at&t building. hours later police responded to a call of shots fired. they could hear a recording coming from the rv warning people nearby to evacuate. >> if you can hear this message, evacuate now. >> reporter: at 6:30 a.m., the rv exploded into a fireball. debris and smoke shooting hundreds of feet into the air. buck mccoy was in his bed when his apartment shook. >> all the windows came in from the living room to the front door. >> reporter: six police officers being hailed as heroes after rushing in to evacuate the area. remarkably only three people suffered minor injuries. abc news washington, d.c. some sad news to pass along now. basketball great k.c. jones has died at the age of '88. jones teamed up with russell again on the boston celtics and

what a contrast. we have fire and ice this holiday weekend, all courtesy of mother nature. let's start in hawaii where the volcano spews volcano from its crater. this fiery display from a helicopter. there is a huge lava lake growing there, 600 feet deep, the same height as the washington monument. closer to home, it is a

white christmas up in the sie a sierra. you can see interstate 80 is covered in snow and flakes were still falling earlier today. this is the biggest storm to hit the mountains in quite some time and some locations were expected to get a foot and a half of snow or even more by the end of the weekend. the first snow survey of the season is coming wednesday. the bay area discovery museum is giving children a place to play during the pandemic. while they closed all indoor exhibits, it just reopened its outdoor play area. there are 2.5 acres of outdoor space. social distancing and masks are required and staff regularly clean surfaces. >> well, children are spending a lot of time indoors and in front of screens, and we know for their emotional well-being and their physical well-being, they need to be outdoors, so we have a very safe space for parents

partly cloudy skies allowing any warmth to radiate away. the coldest spots dropping into the 30s. 37 in napa. even in the east bay, livermore drops to 39. roughly 43 san jose in the city. drop to 46 degrees. so will be a chilly start to the day tomorrow. here is the story we're tracking. live doppler 7 along with satellite. that cold front has pushed off to the east. pretty quiet over california right now. but you can already see our next storm waiting in the wings. now, the path of this storm a little bit different than the one we had yesterday. this storm more of a southern track. so southern california will get more rain fall than we see here, but we will get some showers out of this storm system. so on the storm impact scale, it is a level one light storm we have late tomorrow night and early into the day on monday. we'll track those scatters showers. because of that southern path

this storm is taken, the highest totals with this storm will be in the south bay and it will be breezy from time to time. so future weather, by 6:00 p.m. tomorrow evening, we are still dry. it is at night that rain returns. by 11:00 p.m., that's when we will start to track the wet weather moving in along the peninsula and south bay. we'll start to see showers work into the north bay and we'll track those scattered showers throughout the afternoon on monday as well. total rain fall, you take a look. it kind of seems like an upside down storm in terms of the storm fall totals with the highest rain fall along the peninsula and south bay. pretty low totals with this storm. a little different in terms of a rain fall compared to what we experienced yesterday. highs on sunday, mostly cloudy skies. temperatures mainly in the upper 50s, if not close to 60 degrees. so just slightly below average for this time of year. here is the accuweather
