building a better bay area for a safe and secure, this is abc 7 news. a new variant of the coronavirus is spreading across the globe. health experts say it could already be in the bay area without us knowing as california continues to set records in hospitalizations and confirmed cases. good morning, i'm jovina fordson in for liz kreutz. we'll have more on the new strain and what doctors are saying about it. first look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> hey, jovina, good morning to you. hi, everyone. plenty of clouds out there keeping temperatures up. live doppler 7 you can see that we are mostly cloudy 44 in union stay. it is 47 in oakland with 45 in

richmond. 37 santa rosa and low 40s in livermore. this morning, since yesterday, we have really dropped our numbers despite the lack of 30s out there. so we were very mild with the rainfall yesterday, saturday, but today we are putting our sights on our next system, our level one system late tonight into tomorrow, bringing scattered showers. we'll see the highest totals in the south bay and not going to be that much at all. we are reducing the rainfall totals so it is going to be a breezy system with the rainfall focused from the santa cruz mountains to the south. count on cloudy skies today, temperatures in the mid-50s looking at the rain develop at night. we'll time it out and talk about new year's eve and new year's day next time we see you. jovina? >> thank you, lisa. public health researchers are keeping a close eye on a coronavirus variant spreading quickly throughout the uk. the cdc tomorrow is requiring a negative covid test from travelers from the uk and the variant has not been detected in

the u.s., though they admit it's possible it's already here. matt boone learned more about the variant. >> i'll be shocked if it's not here actually. it's been around for a while. >> reporter: dr. peter chin hung says the travel restrictions from the uk are smart but likely too late. >> it's just moving around where people travel to. >> reporter: he says it's still not scientifically known if the strain is more contagious, statistical data implies it might be. >> to could have negative consequences because it's going to grow like wildfire. >> reporter: in southern california, the current epicenter that may be the case. the l.a. county health department is awaiting results of genomic testing to see if it contributed to the december surge. >> it wouldn't be surprising if a new strain that was identified in the uk is identified here in los angeles. >> reporter: san francisco's public health department tells abc 7 they have not yet detected any cases of the new variant but

chin hung says the u.s. has not been testing for it much. >> we just don't do a lot of specific variant testing as a routine bases in the u.s. we have so many numbers it's not something we've traditionally done. >> reporter: the good news, the variant doesn't appear to be more deadly or resistant to the vaccines on the market. >> it takes years for some virus like covid to mutate appreciably so the vaccine won't work. >> reporter: public officials in l.a. say it could take a week before they have the results. developing news, wait and worry this morning about the fate of a covid-19 stimulus bill that needs the president's approval. he says he's holding out for more funding for unemployment benefits. here's the latest information. the $2.3.3.3.3 package funding for the federal government.

if not approved a shutdown would happen tuesday morning. 14 million people lost unemployment coverage yesterday when an earlier stimulus measure expired. the aid package includes a $900 billion small business program to fund the paycheck protection program. abc 7 news reporter arthur hassan has the plight of an east bay restaurant that's desperate for help. >> reporter: the empty parking lot is a sign of how tough this year has been. but the next six months will determine whether that tradition continues says the owner of 360 gourmet burritos in walnut creek. they're used to getting 250 orders per day. >> we're half of that. >> reporter: no dining in due to the pandemic means a drop in sales and at the same time the cost of supplies are up, and he still has to pay rent and salaries, at least for the employees that he has left. helmand got $25,000 from the first government stimulus package but he says that money is gone and despite the promise

of a vaccine returning things to normal, he says the second ppp loan is even more crucial than the first. >> it's wintertime, one, and two, we're going into the new year, not knowing what's going to happen. we can use it. it's more important. >> reporter: helmand knows other restaurants have closed just blocks away from his and the loyal customer base isn't enough to keep the doors open. >> i don't want this place so close because they didn't get the help they need from the government. >> reporter: helmand has a six-month plan in place built on a second round of stimulus money, which means he has a lot to consider starting this week. >> if things don't turn around obviously and no help comes in, then things will get really tough for us and at that time, we have to make a decision. >> reporter: in walnut creek, ansar hassan, abc 7 news. coming up on "this week" following president trump's threat to veto the covid relief bill senator bernie sanders will talk about efforts to get benefits to millions of americans. watch the full interview on "this week with george stephanopolous" at 8:00 this

morning right here on abc 7. california is still setting coronavirus records this holiday weekend. the state saw its hospitalizations go up, edging closer to 19,000. there's been a new daily record every day since december 9th, and every day since december 3rd, the number of people in the icu has set a new high. yesterday it topped 4,000. the total number of new cases is just over 30,000, well below the daily average for the past week. the bay area saw its icu capacity rise a little bit from friday. it was 9.8%. the southern california and san joaquin valley regions are still at zero but that doesn't mean people will get turned away when they go to the hospital. the northern california region remains above at 15% threshold and is the only region without a stay-at-home order. in the south bay, covid-19 testing continues today in santa clara county. abc 7 news was at the fairgrounds in san jose. hundreds of cars lined up for

drive-through testing. 2,200 new cases have been reported from friday to saturday. health officials fear cases will jump as the holidays wrap up, and more people get tested. our ongoing commitment to help build a better bay area includes the latest on the race to vaccinate nearly 2 million people in the u.s. have received a covid-19 vaccine, according to the cdc's covid data tracker. more than 9.5 million vaccine doses have been distributed in our country, that includes both the pfizer and moderna vaccines. trucks delivered the first shipments of pfizer covid-19 vaccines to countries across europe for a coordinated eu rollout. several eu countries, including france, spain, germany, unhungary and slovakia began administering doses of the vaccine yesterday. shipments of vaccines arrived in all 27 countries that make up the european union. do you have questions or concerns about the vaccine? we have a page dedicated to information about it and finding

you answers. you can find it on our website, that is abc7news.com/vaccine. rain and cooler temperatures have finally brought an end to the fire season in the north bay this year. it was the most destructive in california history. cal fire says peak fire season is over in six north bay counties, including napa, solano and sonoma. the period lasted a month longer than the previous two seasons. the state will continue to staff resources just in case of another disaster. more than 400,000 acres burned in the north bay this year alone with hundreds of homes and businesses lost. so as we take a live look at the bay bridge behind me, there is the bay bridge right there, there we go. missed it a little bit there, we check in with lisa on the forecast. >> we have beneficial rain on the way, not a lot. rainfall totals have been reduced. our storm impact scale will be with us tonight and tomorrow, level one system. i'll have all the details coming up. >> thank you, lisa.

police in rockford, illinois will give more information what led to a shooting at a bowling alley saturday night that left three dead and three others injured. a 37-year-old man is in custody for what investigators are calling a random attack. teen agers are among the victims of the shooting. rackford is about 0 miles northwest of chicago. investigators have yet to reveal a motive for the attack. the bowling alley posted to its

open during the holiday but families must reserve a time slot in advance. parts of tahoe are expecting to get more than a foot and a half of snow by the end of this weekend. reporter heather janssen tells us the snow made driving and skiing in the area a bit tricky. >> we made it. >> reporter: ninfa nuvall happy to be headed home for the night. >> it was the kind of snow plus rain, you know, it was the combination. >> reporter: the winter weather posing problems on i-80, highway hazard, cars pulled off to the side and traffic backed up for miles with low visibility and slow-moving cars. some drivers wondering when the end was in sight. >> we've been driving for like three hours but we are safe and so you know, and the skiing was fun, so it was worth it. >> reporter: but it wasn't just hard to see on i-80. it was on the slopes, too. >> the visibility was a little bit low, but that kind of added to the experience because it made it a little bit more

challenging. >> reporter: the family skiing and snowboarding to celebrate their white christmas, looking for a sense of normalcy by enjoying the outdoors. >> with the shutdown and pandemic and all that and this was a great activity to spend together as a family. >> reporter: now saying this could be a new family tradition. others now ready to end their night on a sweet note. >> go home, hot chocolate maybe. >> yes. we also know that sometimes those rides can be rough and with the snow there, that means we have some rain approaching here in our area. we check in with lisa for more on that. >> good morning to you. this system is really going to focus to the south of us from santa cruz, south of monterey, into southern california. so we do miss the highest rain totals but it will be enhanced in the upper elevations. we'll get to that in a moment. live doppler 7 showing you the cloud cover out there, so it's a cloudy start and looking at the precip offshore here. we need that triggering mechanism which is an area of

low pressure to the north, it's going to swing on in and allow that rain shower activity to start in the south bay first this evening. 46 in belmont. it is 47 in san bruno and daly city. as we look up to the north bay, a little cooler here but still really not as cold as it could be. 41 in livermore. 46 in san jose. bringing in our storm impact scale it's a level one late tonight into monday, some scattered showers, highest totals for once will be around cupertino, san jose, ben lomand and big sur will be breezy at times through early monday morning. from mt. tam, no obstructions, no fog out there but we have the clouds, the rain arriving tonight and possible showers as we get into new year's eve. as we go through the next several hours the cloud cover here, partly cloudy to mostly cloudy here, 3:30 in the afternoon, it's pretty quiet, as we get to about 10:00, here comes some rain, to the south of

us, the counter clockwise rotation moving the rain from the south bay into the east bay. north bay remains pretty quiet, just a few scattered showers here. we're into monday afternoon and things have quieted down. so totals not too impressive. we're looking at just a couple hundredths from santa rosa, hopefully a tenth over in oakland, along the coast, over a quarter of an inch and as we get towards the east bay little rain, maybe 0.1" an 0.3" into ben lomond and the santa cruz mountains. the most activity further to the south, we take you into tuesday, it's dry as well as wednesday, but by overnight wednesday into thursday, here comes another quick shot of shower activity, so because they're not big storms, it is beneficial rain for us, and we're looking at new year's eve, looking dry, and into friday, no problems but as we get into early next weekend, looks like we could see a little bit more rain. so we're not looking at the big storms, but every couple of

days, looking at some precip allowing for definitely some good news in terms of our deficit. 60 today in fremont, upper 50s from santa rosa to san rafael. we'll be in between the clouds, and maybe a few peeks of sun today. 58 along the coast. overall temperatures near average and the cloud cover with us, the accuweather seven-day forecast, level one system arriving later on tonight, it continues into monday, with scattered showers early. then partly cloudy skies, tuesday we're brighter, wednesday it's a chilly morning, those two days with the clear skies we'll see some very cold overnight lows and as we get into new year's eve, the clouds thicken up, maybe a few scattered showers, new year's day 2021, looking cloudy and a little bit uneventful, so for now, we'll be watching that rain tonight, jovina and for once, the south bay picking up on some more rain. >> i picked up what you said about 2021 being uneventful, and

on a gift of curry. >> reporter: let's talk obsession for a moment, the good kind you find in a seventh grade basketball player like griffey williams of san ramon. >> he's out here six days a week and has practice daily. >> reporter: usually wearing steph curry gear. >> when i wear the jersey, i feel like i can make all my shots. >> reporter: in his bedroom, all curry all the time morning and night. one item he wanted one of the official nba steph curry jerseys. >> he wanted it pretty bad. >> reporter: but his mom, katie, felt griffey should earn it, so he did, literally, a nickel and dime at a time, but when it came time to buy, a revelation. >> i could have bought it for myself or i could have given it to someone probably who needed it more than i did. >> reporter: fast forward to this meeting on a playground in oakland, griffey had never before met erasmo or javier but they share basketball and the love for curry.

for a safe and secure future, this is abc 7 news. >> good morning, everyone. we are going to start this half hour with a look at the weather, and meteorologist lisa argen is here with us. hi, lisa. >> hey there, jovina. good morning to you. hi, everyone. starting out with plenty of cloud cover. it's a little cooler this morning but we are dry and will stay that way for the day. it is 39 in novato. 36 in santa rosa with 46 in san jose. 40 san ramon and 41 in the livermore valley. so with this cloud cover, we are still anywhere from 7 to 14 degrees colder, bringing in our storm impact scale for later on today, it's a level one into early monday, scattered showers, highest totals will be south of san francisco, will be breezy at times, as the southerly winds kick up. so 9:00 in the 40s, with the clouds, between partly and mostly cloudy skies today, 2:00 upper 50s to near 60, and then by 6:00, we're still dry but look what happens as we get towards 9:00, 10:00. you can see that green there. yeah, we're looking at a little bit of rainfall activity, so

another look at your sunday and the rain, it does focus south of us. we'll pinpoint how much and then look at the last week of the year in just a few minutes. jovina? >> thank you, lisa. developing news in the christmas day bombing in downtown nashville. this morning investigator, searching for a suspect and motive, working with a behavioral analyst to develop a psychological profile. >> reporter: this morning, federal agents are focusing on a possible suspect in the nashville bombing christmas day. hundreds of investigators on the scene of the home in a suburb outside of nashville. it once belonged to anthony quinn warner. he once owned and lived at the home being searched, but recently transferred the deed to a woman in california. a google map image of the home from may 2019 appearing to show an rv that's similar to the one used in the explosion. >> the rv's been there for a while. it doesn't really move.

it just stay there is so this was something that just looked suspicious, that it wasn't there anymore. >> reporter: investigators are trying to identify the human remains found at the scene. >> stay back until we figure out what's going on. >> our investigative team is turning over every stone to make sure we know as many details as possible to answer the question of who is responsible for this, and also to understand why did they do this. >> reporter: investigators say just after 1:00 a.m., this rv was seen parked outside the at&t building. hours later, police responded to a call of shots fired. when they approached the rv, they could hear a recording coming from the vehicle, warning people nearby to evacuate. >> if you can hear this message, evacuate now. >> reporter: the explosion left a field of debris stretching for several blocks. windows shattered, building

damaged. the police chief asking business owners and residents to be patient. >> there's about 40 buildings that's been impacted, and so those buildings will have to be cleared through our codes. >> reporter: buck mccoy was in his bed when his apartment building shook. >> cars were on fire, the trees were all out on the street, all the windows were broken. there was debris all up and down the street. you're in a daze, you know, and you can't believe what you are seeing in front of you. >> reporter: it is still unclear whether at&t was the intended target, but according to a federal bulletin obtained by abc news, police around the country have been asked to increase patrols around at&t facilities, as a precaution. kristine sloan, abc news, new york. today is the final full day of lori loughlin's two-month prison sentence. the former "full house" star is said to be released from a federal corrections facility in dublin tomorrow.

she has been in isolation at the facility these past two weeks. a covid-19 outbreak there has so far sickened at least 180 inmates. her team tells abc news she is healthy and is in no danger. loughlin and her husband pleaded guilty earlier this year to paying half a million dollars to get their daughters into the university of southern california. 2020 was a year like no other as we know. covid-19 put a stop to the sports world, and nba legend and his daughter were among the nine lives lost in an unthinkable tragedy and social justice was at the forefront for many athletes. abc news reporter alex bruchette looks back at sports this year. ♪ >> reporter: 2020 began on the nfl's biggest stage, super bowl liv. patrick mahomes leading the kansas city chiefs to their first title in 50 years, and earning head coach and ye reid a wing with a win over the san francisco 49ers.

but as one new star emerged, we lost another. basketball legend kobe bryant, his 13-year-old gianna and seven others were killed in a helicopter crash in the hills above calabasas, california, on their way to i ayouth basketball tournament. the outpouring of grief was widespread. the nba honored bryant on and off the court. [ chants of kobe ] fans from all over the world mourning their idol especially in los angeles. kobe, a loving father of four girls who became an advocate for women's basketball, then march brought a different kind of madness, the covid-19 pandemic. the utah jazz's rudy gobert's positive test bringing the game to a halt. >> the game has been postponed. >> reporter: setting off a chain reaction. >> the nba success spending its season. >> the ncaa shocking basketball fans, no tournaments, no championships this year. >> the 2020 olympics postponed.

thousands of top athletes sidelined. >> reporter: after months of no games, the nba created a bubble to resume play safely at disney world. athletes used the time off to bring awareness to racial justice sparked by the police-involved killings of george floyd and breonna taylor. >> we are dedicating this season to breonna taylor, an outstanding emt murdered over 130 days ago in her home. >> same energy we have on the floor is the same energy that we have towards having justice for breonna taylor. >> reporter: taking unprecedented action interrupting play after another shooting of a black man by police. >> we keep loving this country and this country does not love us back, and it's just, it's really so sad. >> the outrage over the police shooting of jacob blake spilling onto the courts and fields of american professional sports. >> reporter: the wnba, major league baseball and soccer postponing their games in

solidarity. >> we all have an opportunity to keep the focus on the issues and command change. >> reporter: back on the court, the los angeles lakers defeated the miami heat in the nba finals, behind the superstar duo of lebron james and anthony davis, dedicating their win to kobe bryant. despite challenges in the condensed season, major league baseball crowned the los angeles dodgers world series champions. ended the team's 32-year drought but the celebration controversial. >> justin turner joined the on field despite being positive. 2020 had its moments of perfection. sports continued to press forward, giving us something to root for, and the hope that comes with heading into a new year. alex bruchette, abc news, washington. this morning, crews are at work getting ready for the new

the playoffs. miami stays alife at 10-5. that's your look at sports. let's send it back to you. we're going to get a check of the bay area forecast with meteorologist lisa argen. hi, lisa. >> hey, jovina. good morning. we have the 7:24 sunrise, setting at 4:58, and another system on the way, bringing a little bit of rain, a level one, live doppler 7, plenty of cloud cover here and we'll stay dry throughout your entire sunday. the rain isn't going to arrive until late tonight, and when it does, it's going to start in the south bay. here is a look at what's to come. you can see this area of low pressure, it will be lifting this system from the southwest across the bay area, and the most rain will be in southern california. so friends from los angeles into san diego, getting some beneficial rain, while our friends in the north bay hardly see anything at all. 45 in belmont. it is 42 in menlo park, along the coast, 46 daly city, so

these numbers are colder than yesterday, but still really not that bad, numbers in the mid-30s with some fog moving into santa rosa. here is what we're expecting our level one system late tonight, it takes us through early monday, with scattered showers, highest totals will be in the south bay, and we are reducing the totals throughout the entire bay area, so it's not a big system, while the southerly winds and enhanced rainfall along the coastal hills because when it comes in from the south, that orographic lift is what we call it, rings out more precip in the higher elevations so cloudy and we will see a little bit of sun throughout the afternoon. the rain holding off throughout the evening hours, until late tonight, and possible showers into very early in the day on thursday, which is new year's eve. here is a look at the cloud cover to start out and then it thins out say about 12:00, 1:00 and looking at more clouds and the rain coming up late tonight from the south bay, down through santa cruz and as we go through

the next several hours, notice we have the counterclockwise rotation so scattered showers, first thing in the morning monday, in the east bay. you can see the north bay not looking at a whole lot. here we get into noontime monday and this system is about over. so the amounts range from couple hundredths all the way up through santa rosa, sonoma, not seeing anything about 0.2" in san francisco and oakland maybe 0.25" on the peninsula and higher elevations we'll see the rainfall totalless pick up from ben lomand over a third of an inch of rain. thursday we a on thursday maybe a few showers, into later afternoon on thursday we'll call it partly cloudy to mostly cloudy and yet another system on the way as we get into late friday and saturday. so finally a ridge of high pressure not the dominant feature and because of that, we're going to see systems every
