building a better bay area for a safe and secure, this is abc 7 news. a new variant of the coronavirus is spreading across the globe. health experts say it could already be in the bay area without us knowing it. this comes as california continues to set records in hospitalizations and confirmed cases. good morning. it's sunday, december 27th. i'm jovina fordson. we'll have more on the new strain and what doctors are saying about it. first look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. good morning, lisa. >> hey, jovina, good morning to

you. we have a lot of cloud cover out there and despite that, we're still pretty chilly with some 30s and fog out there but mainly 40s. live doppler 7, storm system will arrive along the central coast today that will bring rain to the bay area. we'll bring in our storm impact scale, a level one system late tonight into monday, scattered showers, highest totals will be in the south bay, it will be breezy at times. it is coming from a different trajectory. as we start out with the clouds today we'll get breaks in the cloud cover throughout the middle of the afternoon so we'll call it partly cloudy to mostly cloudy. low 50s on the coast, upper 50s around the bay. we're dry 9:00 but the rain comes in shortly after that, and it's going to start out, you can see right there, in the south bay. so we'll track it for you. we'll count up the totals and talk about the last week of the year, including new year's eve and new year's day in a few minutes. jovina? >> thank you, lisa. public health researchers are keeping a close eye on a coronavirus variant spreading quickly throughout the uk. the cdc tomorrow is requiring a negative covid test from

travelers from the uk and the variant has not been detected in the u.s., though they admit it's possible it's already here. abc 7 news reporter matt boone learned more about the variant. >> i'll be shocked if it's not here actually. it's been around for a while. >> reporter: dr. peter chin-hong from ucsf says the travel restrictions from the uk are smart but likely too late. >> it's just moving around where people travel to. >> reporter: he says it's still not scientifically known if the strain is more contagious, statistical data implies it might be. >> it could potentially have negative consequences because it's going to grow like wildfire. >> reporter: in southern california, the current epicenter of this crisis, that may already be the case. the l.a. county health department is awaiting results of genomic testing to see if it contributed to the december surge. >> it wouldn't be surprising if

a new strain that was identified in the uk is identified here in los angeles. >> reporter: san francisco's public health department tells abc 7 they have not yet detected any cases of the new variant but chin-hong says the u.s. has not been testing for it much. >> we just don't do a lot of specific variant testing as a routine basis in the u.s. main because we have so many numbers it's not something we've traditionally done. >> reporter: the good news, the variant doesn't appear to be more deadly or resistant to the vaccines on the market. >> it takes years for some virus like covid to mutate appreciably so the vaccine won't work. >> reporter: public health officials in l.a. say it could take a week before they have the results. matt boone, abc 7 news. developing news, it's wait and worry this morning about the fate of a covid-19 stimulus bill that needs the president's approval. he says he's holding out for more funding for unemployment benefits. here's the latest information.

the $2.3 trillion spending package includes funding for the federal government. if not approved, a shutdown would happen tuesday morning. 14 million americans lost their federal unemployment coverage yesterday, when an earlier stimulus measure expired. the aid package includes a $900 billion small business program to fund the paycheck protection program. abc 7 news reporter ansar hassan has the plight of an east bay restaurant that's desperate for help. >> reporter: the empty parking lot is a sign of how tough this year has been. >> part of the community for 27 years and want to continue the tradition. >> reporter: but the next six months will determine whether that tradition continues says sal helmand, the owner of 360 gourmet burritos in walnut creek. they're used to getting 250 orders per day. >> we're doing about half of that. >> reporter: no dining in due to the pandemic means a drop in sales, and at the same time, the cost of supplies are up, and he still has to pay rent and salaries, at least for the

employees that he has left. helmand got $25,000 from the first government stimulus package but he says that money is gone and despite the promise of a vaccine returning things to normal, he says the second ppp loan is even more crucial than the first. >> it's wintertime, one, and two, we're going into the new year, not knowing what's going to happen. we definitely can use it. it's more important. >> reporter: helmand knows other restaurants have closed just blocks away from his and the loyal customer base isn't enough to keep the doors open. >> i don't want this place to close because they didn't get the help they need from the government. >> reporter: helmand has a six-month plan in place, but that plan is built on a second round of stimulus money, which means he has a lot to consider starting this week. >> if things don't turn around obviously and no help comes in, then things will get really tough for us and at that time, we have to make a decision. >> reporter: in walnut creek, ansar hassan, abc 7 news. coming up on "this week" following president trump's threat to veto the covid relief

bill, senator bernie sanders will talk about efforts to get benefits to millions of americans. watch the full interview on "this week with george stephanopolous" at 8:00 this morning right here on abc 7. california is still setting coronavirus records this holiday weekend. the state saw its hospitalizations go up, edging closer to 19,000. there's been a new daily record every day since december 9th, and every day since december 3rd, the number of people in the icu has set a new high. yesterday it topped 4,000. the total number of new cases is just over 30,000, well below the daily average for the past week. the bay area saw its icu capacity rise a little bit from friday. it was 9.8%. the southern california region and san joaquin valley regions are still at zero but that doesn't mean people will get turned away when they go to the hospital. the northern california region remains above the 15% threshold and is the only region without a

stay-at-home order. in the south bay, covid-19 testing continues today in santa clara county. abc 7 news was at the fairgrounds in san jose. hundreds of cars lined up for drive-through testing. 2,200 new cases have been reported from friday to saturday. health officials fear cases will jump as the holidays wrap up, and more people get tested. our ongoing commitment to help build a better bay area includes the latest on the race to vaccinate nearly 2 million people in the u.s. have received a covid-19 vaccine, according to the cdc's covid data tracker. more than 9.5 million vaccine doses have been distributed in our country, that includes both the pfizer and moderna vaccines. trucks delivered the first shipments of pfizer covid-19 vaccines to countries across europe for a coordinated eu rollout. several eu countries, including france, spain, germany, hungary and slovakia began administering doses of the vaccine yesterday.

shipments of vaccines arrived in all 27 countries that make up the european union. do you have questions or concerns about the vaccine? we have a page dedicated to information about it and finding you answers. you can find it on our website, that is abc7news.com/vaccine. rain and cooler temperatures have finally brought an end to the fire season. i know so many people are thrilled about that, in the north bay this year. it was the most destructive in california history. cal fire says peak fire season is over in six north bay counties, including napa, solano and sonoma. the period last the much longer than the previous two seasons. the state will continue to staff fire resources just in case of another disaster. more than 400,000 acres burned in the north bay this year alone with hundreds of homes and businesses lost. we are going to check in with meteorologist lisa argen here who is tracking eventually some rain that will get to our

[laughing] that works. developing news. police in rockford, illinois will give more information what led to a shooting at a bowling alley saturday night that left three people dead and three others injured. police say a 37-year-old man is

in custody for what investigators are calling a random attack. he is believed to be the only suspect. teenagers are among the victims of the shooting. rockford is about 90 miles northwest of chicago. investigators have yet to reveal a motive for the attack. the bowling alley posted to its facebook page with the words "pray, please." back here in the bay area, despite our stay-at-home order shoppers were out after christmas. cornell barnard found out what motivated people to get in line. >> i'm surprised there is a line today. >> reporter: julie flores from alameda waited patiently outside the louis vitton, making a post christmas return. >> it's a nice big but too big so i'm looking for something smaller. >> reporter: outside gucci, temperature checks required at the store. >> some returns, i didn't do a good job picking my girl's gift, she didn't like it.

>> reporter: most stores were following health guidelines limiting the number of customers inside. not your typical day after christmas crowds on union square. fewer shoppers. some folks showed up as tradition. >> we shopped the day after christmas for the last 40 years and just really sad the stores are emme and worried about the people that work there, that they might be getting laid off. >> reporter: down the street, westfield shopping center was easier, folks making returns and looking for sales. crowds of shoppers at local malls. it's not what health officials want to see. >> my concern if people gather indoors we'll see more transmission. >> reporter: with new covid cases spiking and icu beds running low, dr. willis fears another surge on top of a post-thanking giving surge. >> it may be too late to do something about this now but we hope everyone will take every precaution they can right now.

christmas trees from san francisco households in the new year. residents can place trees next to their blue recycling bin the night before their scheduled collection days, between january 4th through the 15th. recology will haul them off to the chipper as a service to their san francisco customers but you need to move all the decorations, nails and tinsel. it turned unwanted trees to 500 tons of mulch last year. an eco-friendly way to get rid of the tree. head over to abc7news.com for tips on how to recycle christmas trees in your neighborhood. the bay area discovery museum is giving children a place to play during the pandemic. while the museum in sausalito closed indoor exhibits it just reopened its outdoor play area. 2.5 acres with a play ship, gravel pit and a mud kitchen. social distancing and masks are required and staff regularly clean the surfaces.

three hours but we are safe and so you know, and the skiing was fun, so it was worth it. >> reporter: but it wasn't just hard to see on i-80. it was on the slopes, too. >> the visibility was a little bit low, but that kind of added to the experience because it made it a little bit more challenging. >> reporter: the family skiing and snowboarding to celebrate their white christmas, looking for a sense of normalcy by enjoying the outdoors. >> with the shutdown and pandemic and all that and this was a great activity to spend together as a family. >> reporter: now saying this could be a new family tradition. others now ready to end their night on a sweet note. >> go home, to hot chocolate maybe. >> yes. that sounds good. i don't know about the traffic. let's check in with lisa for the forecast. >> i'm with you. yosemite will pick up 6 to 10 inches of snow and also southern california, los angeles could see thunderstorms, debris flow patterns and winter storm warnings in effect down for our friends in the southland, but as

for the bay area, well, we're not going to see too much. in fact, this is not a big snowmaker, even not a big rainmaker, but we will take what we can get. live doppler 7 right now showing you all the cloud cover over the bay area, and there is activity in the pacific you can see, we need what we call a triggering mechanism to create some of this moisture to fall in the form of rain. it is that area of low pressure, but it's going to come in from the southwest and going to move in the unusual counterclockwise rotation, so that's going to bring enhanced rainfall for the hills along the coast, and as it travels south, the rain from monterey points southward. 45 in union city as well as berkeley and richmond. 46 alameda. good morning santa rosa, chilly 37 there, a little bit of fog. 43 in albany. about 8:00, 9:00 in the south bay, it lasts through early monday, bringing scattered showers and highest amounts will be for one surrounding cupertino and perhaps san jose looking at the winds, breezy at times, and as we look live outside, this was a view from mt. tam, you can't see too much, that sun coming up close to 7:30, about 7:22, with the cloudy skies this morning. we'll break out into a little bit of sun midafternoon, and then rain not arriving until late, possible showers on new year's eve but even that is a weak system and a glancing blow. as we go through the next several hours you see the clouds thin out there, maybe 1:00, 2:00. 4:00 we're still dry as and we get towards about 7:00, 8:00, maybe some showers along the central coast, they'll work their way up into the south bay, then the east bay and very little rainfall is expected up towards the north bay, perhaps nothing up in sonoma, and napa. monday morning scattered showers, but by monday afternoon, wie're back into

partly cloudy skies so rainfall amounts from a couple hundredths in the north bay to maybe a tenth as you get closer to the bay, and then along the coast, maybe a quarter to a third of an inch, and you can see all the way down through the santa cruz mountains, the shading creates a higher rainfall totals but still, not very much. as we get into your tuesday, we're dry, and into wednesday, but we're not looking at the typical big ridge of high pressure. we're looking at storms continuing to move in from the west, even though it's maybe just clipping the bay area early new year's eve. still some beneficial light showers, maybe a little bit of light snow. we're dry into the end of the week, and then as we get into next saturday, looking at more shower activity, so that's certainly some good news as we enter into 2021. high temperatures today from the mid-50s to about 60 degrees in fremont, look for 60 in san jose. partly to mostly cloudy skies. overnight tonight it's cooler in

about 1:00/2:00 we have some sunshine, partly cloudy, upper 50s to near 60. we're still dry around dinnertime and even by 9:00, we're still looking at the dry weather in the north bay, but look at the south bay and along the coast, getting wet there, so we'll time it out for you and talk about totals and new year's eve in just a few minutes. jovina? >> thank you, lisa. developing news in the christmas day bombing in downtown nashville. this morning investigators are searching for a suspect and motive, working with a behavioral analyst to develop a psychological profile. abc news reporter christine sloan has the latest. >> reporter: this morning, federal agents are focusing on a possible suspect in the nashville bombing christmas day. hundreds of investigators on the scene of the home in a suburb outside of nashville. it once belonged to anthony quinn warner. he once owned and lived at the home being searched, but recently transferred the deed to a woman in california. a google map image of the home

from may 2019 appearing to show an rv that's similar to the one used in the explosion. >> the rv's been there for a while. it doesn't really move. it just stay there is so this was something that just looked suspicious, that it wasn't there anymore. >> reporter: investigators are trying to identify the human remains found at the scene. >> stay back until we figure out what's going on. >> our investigative team is turning over every stone to make sure we know as many details as possible to answer the question of who is responsible for this, and also to understand why did they do this. >> reporter: investigators say just after 1:00 a.m., this rv was seen parked outside the at&t building. hours later, police responded to a call of shots fired. when they approached the rv, they could hear a recording coming from the vehicle, warning people nearby to evacuate.

>> if you can hear this message, evacuate now. >> reporter: the explosion left a field of debris stretching for several blocks. windows shattered, buildings damaged. the police chief asking business owners and residents to be patient. >> there's about 40 buildings that's been impacted, and so those buildings will have to be cleared through our codes. >> reporter: buck mccoy was in his bed when his apartment building shook. >> cars were on fire, the trees were all out on the street, all the windows were broken. there was debris all up and down the street. you're in a daze, you know, and you can't believe what you are seeing in front of you. >> reporter: it is still unclear whether at&t was the intended target, but according to a federal bulletin obtained by abc news, police around the country have been asked to increase patrols around at&t facilities, as a precaution. christine sloan, abc news, new york. today is the final full day

of lori loughlin's two-month prison sentence. stemming from the nationwide college admissions cheating scandal. the former "full house" star is said to be released from a federal corrections facility in dublin tomorrow. she has been in isolation at the facility these past two weeks. a covid-19 outbreak there has so far sickened at least 180 inmates. her team tells abc news she is healthy and is in no danger. loughlin and her husband pleaded guilty earlier this year to paying half a million dollars to get their daughters into the university of southern california. 2020 was a year like no other as we know. covid-19 put a stop to the sports world, an nba legend and his daughter were among the nine lives lost in an unthinkable tragedy, and social justice was at the forefront for many athletes. abc news reporter alex bruchette takes a look back at the year in sports. ♪ >> reporter: 2020 began on the nfl's biggest stage, super bowl liv. patrick mahomes leading the kansas city chiefs to their

north, and these two will link up and allow for some rain tonight, bringing in some level one storm impact scale, but the shower activity and the snow unfortunately south of the bay area, the impressive amounts. the central sierra around yosemite could pick up about ten inches. lake tahoe maybe an inch or so. here is our roof camera. 47 downtown. it's 46 in oakland with 43 in mountain view. san jose checking in at 45 as well as half moon bay, and here is the airport in the south bay, where we're looking at temperatures cooler in the north bay, upper 30s, napa, novato. it's 40 in livermore and our storm impact scale at level one tonight into monday morning, so we're talking about 9:00 tonight in the south bay, the highest totals will be there and from monterey into santa cruz, and big sur, and looking at those breezy southerly winds. here is a look at walnut creek, all of the cloud cover there, and the camera moving. cloudy skies, we'll get a few peeks of sun this afternoon,

probably about 12:00, 1:00. partly cloudy, and then more clouds increase and then the rain arrives tonight, taking us through early monday. we get a break midweek. next chance of showers, light activity on new year's eve, thursday. as we go through the next several hours there is our little break, this is 4:00 on sunday. there's the rain down to the south and it continues to spin up into 9:00/10:00 and you can see this band of rain from san francisco, the peninsula, and down through the south bay. it is a quick mover, so we're not too concerned about that debris flow, where we had all those fires from the dolan complex, and the czu complex, so as it continues to move in the counterclockwise fashion, it will spin up some showers, but the rainfall amounts are trending less than what we previously thought, so by monday, we're back into partly cloudy skies, and adding up the totals, not too impressive. a couple hundredths up in the north bay over a tenth from san francisco and oakland. really lesser amounts than christmas day for some of you,

but they'll begin to add up a little bit from the coastal hills, we get that orographic look into perhaps capitola, around the south bay as well. as we get into your tuesday, the final days, this is the 29th of december, we're dry into the 30th we're dry, the 31st could see a few lights showers, and that's about it, as we get into your new year's day, we're dry, and then friday night into saturday, could see another fast-moving system, so they're not big storms. they're not big snowmakers, but they're just adding enough moisture that will help us out down the road, and hopefully as we get into january and february, where we get most of our rain, we'll see some bigger systems but for now, it's a dry day with more clouds around, 59 in oakland. 60 in fremont today as well as san jose and tonight looking at some rain moving into the south bay for say about 9:00, 10:00, overnight lows colder in the north bay, where we won't have as much cloud cover or much

the cute yellow bungalow. >> we've been living in berkeley since 1986. >> reporter: pixar studios in emeryville couldn't miss their shop called advanced european tailoring. they called away. >> a phone call comes and they would like to make a movie. >> i did it! i got the gig! >> reporter: the animated movie is "soul" about a musician named joe caught between following his dream of making music or taking a stable teaching job. joe's mom is a tailor. pixar animators needed to meet a real life tailor up close. they spent hours watching and this drawing their every move. >> they observed how we work, what we do. this is a dying part. tailoring is a dying art. >> reporter: co-director says animators took inspiration from across the bay area. >> they did a lot of visiting of real barber shops and real tailor shops, including the one you mentioned, so that the animators in the story artists could get a real idea of not just how it looks, but how people move. >> reporter: it's been a tough year for this tailor shop. they pivoted from alterations to
