sandy hi. let's show you live doppler 7. the wider view showing you our storm. the area of low pressure hitting very close to the coastline, already seeing some returns of rainfall. we'll zoom in a little bit closer. here's live doppler 7 across the entire bay area. you can see that shield of rain is about 60 miles away from our coastline. so we're in store for some showers overnight and first thing tomorrow morning. on the storm impact scale, this is a level one light storm we are tracking over the next 14 hours or so. so we'll track the scattered shours. it will be breezy at times. most cities are looking at a less than a quarter of an inch. we'll go hour by hour and show you this storm and several others we're tracking over the next seven days in the full forecast in a few minutes. >> sounds good. thanks. to developing news out of washington. president trump has just signed the covid-19 relief bill and the government funding measure

avoiding a government shutdown. the $900 billion economic relief package, that will bring some much needed funds to millions of americans and their businesses. when it cops to the stimulus check, president trump said it will be boosted from $600 to $2,000. something he's been demanding. it will fund government agencies through september and provide an increase in food stamp benefits, as well as money for transit systems. now to california where we're seeing some startling coronavirus numbers because of delays in los angeles. the state reported more than 50,000 new cases today. the third highest single day total during the pandemic. hospitalizations have topped 19,000, and the number of people in the icu rose to more than 4,100. both once again setting records for daily highs. and here's where the icu capacity stands. the bay area saw a slight drop from 11.3% to 11.1.

the sacramento region saw its capacity improve once again and is standing at 17.8%. southern california and the san joaquin valley are still at zero. despite the pandemic and pleas from public health experts, millions of holiday travelers are returning from family get togethers across the country and in the bay area. the tsa reports this is busiest airports have been since the start of the pandemic, and abc7 news reporter cornell bernard spent the day at sfo. he joins us from the newsroom with what he heard from passengers. >> some say they have heard the warnings but they wanted to travel to see family this holiday. many say they now plan to quarantine after their trip. >> with the traveling, it was difficult but we made it happen. >> reporter: he just arrived back in the bay area wearing a mask and face shield after a trim on l.a. spending christmas with family it was different. we didn't get to go see friends outside of our bubble but we

still had a really good time. >> reporter: he said he plans to quarantine after his trip and that's what health officials urging travelers to do. >> san francisco and santa clara counties now rare ten-day quarantine upon arrival. other bay area counties have other restrictions. >> reporter: that recording plays every few minutes at sfo. >> will indefinitely quarantining. it is almost selfish to travel but it is really hard because you know, family is sometimes all that we have. >> reporter: despite warnings from health that's the, the tsa says millions of people have been passing through airport security checkpoints nationwide. the most since the start of the pandemic. >> i'm not going to stay home. >> reporter: travel through the holiday season is expected to be down nearly 30% this year. 616,000 travelers screened at airports on christmas day. that's about a 75% drop from 2019. >> it doesn't even feel like christmas. >> reporter: with christmas in the rear view and new years on the way, the numbers are expected to ramp back up.

health officials fear a coming surge on top of the surge we're already seeing. >> the expectation is we'll keep seeing these record days of cases, hospitalizations around the country will continue to hit record levels, and unfortunately, the number of death there's drive to us really horrific milestones in the coming months. >> reporter: officials at sfo say things have been fairly quiet there. outbound traffic down about 80% compared to this time last year but nation wide, ttsa said more than 1 million travelers were screened the day after christmas. that number is expected to rise after new years day. >> all right. many thanks to you. to the south bay, santa clara residenhospitals are sayi to go to hospitals. they've seen a rise in people going solely to get tested without symptoms. they are for emergencies and suggest you go to one of the

multiple test sites across the county. this one was at the fair grounds in san jose. you can look up your nearest testing site. organizers demanded better treatment for the unhoused during a protest in san francisco today. >> reporter: abc7 news was in union square where members of hotels, not hospitals. protesting recent legislation by the san francisco board of supervisors. dozens of people gathered to listen to details about what the recent changes mean for people entering shelter in place hotels. the city is working to slowly phase out the shelter in place hotels and many believe it is just too soon. >> the board of supervisors' recent legislation means at a 40% rate, those hotels can be closed down. can and will be closed down. so even as people get moved into permanent housing, and some people get moved in, 40% of hotel rooms are going to be shut down. >> fema has been paying for the

hotel rooms throughout the duration of the pandemic. a high end beverly hills restaurat is under investigation for inviting customers to a discreet new years eve dinner. that would violate the l.a. covid-19 protocols and some man case. some customers who picked up food found the invitations in their takeout bags with notes asking people to keep quiet. it was described as 1920s era speak easy dinner to be held indoors on new years eve. many people thought an indoor dinner during the surge was selfish and dangerous. >> my uncle just got out of hospital. >> especially now. it's worse than when it started. >> reporter: it opened in 1956, it is an institution best known for its chopped salad and celebrity sightings. breonna taylor became one of the symbols in america's

three powerful sparks a fire this morning at cameron and nichols way. two of the poles fell and one remained upright, supported by the tension of the wires. pg&e is working the repair lines. new developments in the christmas day explosion in nashville. the fbi has confirmed it was a suicide bombing. for the first time we're hearing from the heroic office here's evacuated the area. >> reporter: authorities continue to review the surveillance of the bombing that rocked downtown nashville. just after 1:00 a.m., this rv was seen parked outside the building. hours later, police responded to a call of shots fired. as they approached the r vmpbl, they could hear a recording telling officers how many

minutes until the explosion. six nashville police officers now being hailed at heroes. james wes, one of the first on the scene. >> i just see orange and then i hear a loud boom. it rocked me that hard. i said stay on my feet, stay alive. >> reporter: the officer was several feet away from wells as the bomb sploeexploded. >> i've never grabbed somebody so hard in my life. >> reporter: she helped a woman and her four kids evacuate safely. >> that kind of put my heart up in my throat. i don't have kids but i have cousins and nieces and people that i love that are small. >> reporter: in this video exclusively obtained by abc news, agents can be seen carrying out bags of evidence. and the tactical gear. anthony quinn warner is the suspect. >> warner is the bomber. he was present when the bomb went off, and he perished in the

bombing. >> reporter: a google mams image of the home shows an rv similar to the one used in this explosion. >> as the investigation continues, authorities have shut down a road east of nashville after stopping a box truck they said was playing audio similar to what was heard before the rv exploded. abc news, los angeles. a sculpture honoring the life and memory of breonna taylor has been vandalized. abc7 was in oakland where the ceramic bust had been on display for two weeks. it was put up with the phrase, say her name, breonna taylor, to support the black lives matter movement. taylor was shot by police when officers entered her ken kept home on a search warrant. the artist behind the sculpture said this setback only strengthens the fight against racism. >> we're not scared of you. this person has made this a bigger story than it was before and we can remake it and we have

sea crest right here on abc7. it all starts at 8:eigh 8:0eight new years eve. once again, checking in with the impending rain to see if it will affect people's new years eve plans. >> we're tracking several storms and one does fall on new years eve. we'll show that you in a second. right now, we're tracking rain right off the coastline. live doppler 7 giving you the active sweep across the region and you can see off the coast. that's our next storm. we'll loop it over the past 30 minutes and you can see it will rotate in from south to north. so people in the south bay watching right now. you'll likely be the first areas to see rain drops from this storm as it moves through overnight. now, ahead of the storm, we're finding temperatures holding in the upper 40s to mid 50s. 55 from oakland, hayward, down to 53, the current temperature in san jose. so as you take a look at the storm impact scale. it is a level one light system.

we are tracking, moving in overnight into the morning on monday. we'll find the scattered showers that will be breezy at times. rainfall, since this is a pretty quick moving storm. most cities will wind one less than a quarter of an inch of rain. so future weather. we expect early in the morning monday. by 2:00 a.m., we are tracking the showers mainly from san francisco. we'll find the highest rainfall totals with this storm. scattered showers continue in the morning and then into the afternoon. this storm quickly exits. the afternoon will wind up pretty dry across the region. so total rainfall with this system, again, it is areas in the south bay and along the peninsula that will likely find the highest rainfall totals with this quick moving storm. i do think there is the potential for some cities in the north bay to not even register any rainfall with this storm system. in fact, it is southern california that will really get

the brunt of this storm. this is good news for southern california. this will be the first significant rainfall they have seen since april. it's been quite a long time since santa barbara, l.a. has seen close the an inch of rain and that's like what they'll frinld this storm over the next 24 hours. back here at home, we'll track showers moving the overnight tonight. it will be a chilly night. numbers in the mid 30s to mid 40s. we'll watch areas like mt. hamilton where we could see a dusting of snow first thing in the morning with the chilly temperatures. otherwise the morning will attract showers. and then in the afternoon and evening, the rain is out of here. we'll call it partly sunny skies monday and it is a chilly start to the week. you see temperatures only in the mid 50s for most of us. so here's the accuweather forecast. the next seven days, showers before noon tomorrow. and then we're dry, tuesday and wednesday some chilly mornings.

then new years eve morning we'll track another round of morning showers moving through. another quick mover gets out of here as we ring in 2021. and then another storm will move in here next weekend. >> the warriors are in chriss will need surgery and multiple reports say it could be season ending. meanwhile the warriors hope to get draymond green back but steve kerr says they'll hold draymond out until at least the home opener new years day. >> he's doing really well. the to the has healed nicely. but again, he was out with the league protocols and the conditioning level is important because you know, it is very risky to put somebody throughout not quite ready from a conditioning standpoint. that leaves people vulnerable. we feel better about getting him another four, five days of work before he gets on the floor.
