on the coronavirus. california reported more than 33,000 more cases today, below the last two weeks daily average. hospitalizations nearing 20,000. both are single day records. >> latest on the icu availability in california. bay area, 9.5%, drop of nearly 2% from the previous day. sacramento region saw a decline, 16.6%. san joaquin valley in southern california still at 0% capacity. stay-at-home orders for parts of california will likely be extended because of those numbers. word tonight from the governor who said it's due to lack of icu availability. >> doing everything to prepare the staffing and sites and be vigilant. >> state health officials are expecting a post holiday case surge. >> the cases we're seeing today,

impact we anticipate coming from christmas, new year's, would be even worse. >> governor newsom saying the stay-at-home order in san joaquin valley and southern california are set to be extended. sacramento could ease and bay area could exit on january 8th if icu capacity rebounds. also giving an update on the vaccinations. >> 900,000 moderna doses by end of the week arriving in california. >> 1.8 million doses in december, short of the 2.1 projected by the federal government. >> i think it's an extraordinary success story and want to think everybody associated with operation warp speed. thank you from the bottom of all our hearts. >> nearly 262,000 people have been vaccinated in california as of last friday. latest covid surge continues to disproportionately affect low

income communities of color. but in at least one bay area county, infection rates in one latino community are much lower than the death rates. >> reporter: statewide, latinos, 56% of covid cases and 47% of the in sonoma a different story. counties essential workers, many of whom are latino explain the numbers. >> since the work force tends to be 18 to 49-year-old range, that's where we've even disproportionate number of cases. younger individuals have less underlying conditions that lead to complications from covid-19. >> reporter: only 4% that contract it are 65 and older.

explained by demographics. >> residential care facility residents are white/non-hispanic. >> reporter: raises the question of vaccine distribution. older californians can pay out of pocket. >> if you prioritize that over day programs, you're going to skew white. >> reporter: usf professor of geriatrics and member of the vaccine distribution advisory group says a good deal of work is going into making it equitable. >> we need to think about age, death, morbidity, occupations and living conditions that put particularly people of color in this state, particularly latinx people, at much higher risk.

santa clara officials begging people to stay home and save lives. thousands of bay area residents participated in nonessential travel over the holidays and the county is asking them to get tested in the second half of the mandatory ten-day quarantine. just 9% of the icu beds available in the county, health care providers are worried they're run out. >> if the number of people continues to rise, very soon all the hospitals will be out of beds and we'll no longer be able to support each other. >> medical professionals say they know many people are tired of staying home, many of us are, but it's critical to keep people safe. there was surge in travel, pandemic record yesterday for passengers through the airports. but half of what it was last year. day after christmas also was busy, more than 1.1 million
