and the cost of keeping the doors closed is adding up. >> if we didn't have the money for our expenses, then, you know, what do you do? you go out of business. >> it would be tragic to lose that landmark and it's a popular bar now. >> reporter: not only is it iconic but the first lgbtq bar in the country to have something unique, windows. back then those windows were revolutiona revolutionary. >> at that time, it was very risky because if you were seen in a gay bar, you could lose your job. >> reporter: in an effort to save the bar, owners started this go fund me page to cover expenses and the community responded big time. so far donating more than $55,000 and growing. >> because we are an institution that people don't want to see us go away and i just thank every one of them from the bottom of all of our hearts. >> reporter: senator scott weaner says twin peaks is part

of history. >> in the lgbtq community the bars are part of the culture, it's part of our dna and we need to make sure they survive. >> reporter: twin peak owners help the donations will get them through until they can open doors and welcome customers back. cornell bernard, abc 7 news. a staple of the east bay will not reopen in the new year. el charro will serve up mexican dishes for the last time on new year's eve. abc 7 news went by the restaurant where everything was quiet. since the start of the pandemic, it been limited to takeout and delivery orders. el charro has been serving the community since 1947. an east bay nurse is facing a long recovery after a rock went through her windshield as she was driving to work after multiple surgeries and many broken bones, she's now at home healing. abc 7 news reporter kris reyes has her plea for support and inspiring words of survival.

>> reporter: this was pam burnet's life before december 23rd. a hard working nurse, a busy family with two young children. on that night on highway 242 tragedy out of nowhere. >> i was driving along, all of a sudden i had heard this loud bang and then this intense in my face and i couldn't see anything. >> a rock the size of a grape fruit went through it. it was dark and she could barely see drifting her car to the side of the road. >> i was just desperately trying to get siri to call 911 from my watch but nothing was happening. >> reporter: how long did it take for you to get help to get to the hospital? >> i actually have no idea. not a clue. it felt forever. >> reporter: when she got to the hospital, the damage was done. multiple broken bones, a damaged

eye, three surgeries, one of them on christmas day. >> there is a good possibility that i could lose my right eye. >> reporter: chp is investigating the case but still no suspects. police believe the rock may have been thrown from an overpass. pam's husband started this go fund me page because it could be months before she goes back to work as a labor and delivery nurse at contra costa medical center. >> never been so sad about anything in my life. terrible. i'm trying to stay strong and help her get through this. >> reporter: pam and steven draw their strength from their kids, sawier was born this year. despite the pain and long recovery ahead, she's grateful to be alive. >> we are so fortunate to have you in 2020 is the best year s sawyer. >> it's been the best year and worst year at the same time. >> reporter: kris reyes for abc

oakland churches are expanding to get members of the african american community tested for covid-19. there were some 300 tests for today's drive and walk up event at the acts full of gospel on 66th avenue not far from the coliseum. they have been offering free testing on saturdays for months now. today's event was co-sponsored by the friendship christian center and new life community church of west oakland. time for consumer news today. michael finney joins us with a look at today's headlines, michael? >> kristen, a lot going on today. let begin with the california n employment department. users are reporting difficulty accessing unemployment benefits on the website.

this week we're shining a light on the deadly crimes by pacific gas and electric. since 2010 pg&e disasters killed about a dozen californians per year. >> investigative reporter brandon with the abc affiliate in sacramento have been working on this crisis for two years. this is fire, power, money. episode of wone. >> this is the hook that killed 84 people. pg&e is a murderous enterprise. they murdered my father. >> what pg&e has done is failed to learn from its failures. >> nothing is happening when it comes to the catastrophe that happen in paradise and we know is coming here.

i was there and that was at nighttime. it was pitch black during the middle of the day beneath the smoke and falling embers. the campfire sparked further up these power lines on a gusty day a lot like this would be. ever since i was in the fire, i worked to understand it. firepower money investigated the political system and evacuation and what keeps pg&e in power. this year we learned the homost chilling fact act the campfire. it wasn't an accident. it was a crime. the people that died weren't just disaster victims but victims of the power company, the one that owns these lines, pg&e. >> this is the hook that killed 84 people. >> that groove took about 98

choice. and the families have that image in their minds of their loved ones last moment on this earth. ♪ ♪ >> the pacific gas and electric company pleaded guilty to 84 felony manslaughter charges and one felon kny for illegally starting it. the biggest conviction in u.s. history. no people at pg&e faced charges. the campfire convictions belong to the corporation, not any of the officers or employees.

does it feel like they got away? >> they got away with murder. in the truest sense of word the corporation is a fictional person, a legal fiction. >> is justice a fiction in this case? >> yeah, it is a fiction because it didn't go anywhere near enough. not one of them is spending a day in jail. not one. one day. >> it's sickening and every time we pay the pg&e bill, i feel like we're supporting a criminal. >> because you are. >> yes. >> this story is about whether judy can ever expect home to feel safe when her home is in pg&e's monopoly. >> we're forced to make a decision. do we stay here and deal with this year after year in a place that's been our home for 31 years or do we finally get out? >> how do pg&e's crimes compare better or worse than the guy throwing the cigarette butt out the window into a dry field?

all right, time for the four at 4:00. we have drew and spencer with us and the official return of the boeing 737 max. this american airlines jet left miami today and landed safely at new -- -- -- -- -- airport. it was the first flight for the 737 max since grounded. two years ago after crashes that killed 346 people together. american says it will accommodate any passengers worried about flying on the aircraft, which were given the

all clear to fly by the faa last month. spencer, how do you feel about it? would you board a 737 max now? >> well, i'm probably going to have to kristen at some point because they are in such wide use. i might feel a little uneasy at first just thinking about it but i trust that improvements have been made and it will be a pretty safe aircraft. >> yeah, drew, what do you think? have you read much about it? i guess the european union's equivalent of the faa believes this will be as safe as any other aircraft. how do you feel? >> i wouldn't have a problem boarding the max jet. i think the general public unless you're into aviation, i don't know that you'd be able to spot would one of these planes . i think flight attendants will probably get this question a lot, am i flying ochon a max je. i would be okay. i don't think the general public

would know off the bat. >> yeah, i think the initial flights will be a little concerns for some but over time, people will become more comfortable. >> parents have another reason to say no to candy, cake and ice cream for young children. the federal government issued dietary recommendations for no added sugar for children younger than 2. this is the first time the government issued them for infants and toddlers. the suggestions are used to set standards for school lunches and programs. parents are encouraged to feed babies only breast milk for at least six months and spencer, kristen, we'll remember many years ago the battle between salt and sugar and sugar really won and salt became demonized as something to avoid. we've learned in recent years, sugar is really something we need to be careful of. spencer, you're fortunate you don't have a particular sweet tooth. >> that's true and i don't and i'm happy i don't. every once in awhile i like a little dish of vanilla bean ice

cream. that's about it for me. our diet here in this country is so loaded with sugar even beyond just what we call dessert. sugar is in almost everything and we all need to cut back especially young children but adults, as well. >> drew, spencer makes a good point. it's in everything. i put pasta sauce on my dinner i brought to work today and my oldest son working from home in l.a. pointed outlook how much sugar is in that. i looked and sure enough, added sugar. >> in everything. pasta sauce, like you said a ton of sugar, almost all bread products have sugar in them. it is really astounding how much we rely on sugar as a sweetener to make everyday items more palatable but i think spencer and i are on the same line. everything in moderation. you can enjoy something if you like. just don't go overboard eating it every day. >> right. and definitely watch the hidden significant caca
