to keep everyone safe here from the virus. hard to believe but today marks one year since that first covid-19 warning when the world health organization was told about an unknown virus in wuhan, china. the u.s. now hitting yet another new record for daily hospitalizations as frustrations over the vaccine rollout grow and the surgeon general is standing by to talk to us live. we start with that new covid mutation now spreading in the u.s. the first in colorado and second case confirmed in california. kaylee hartung is there with the latest. kaylee, good morning to you. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, whit. as the news broke that the variant was detected in california, dr. fauci said this was expected. he said he wasn't surprised and he warned we'll likely see more cases here in california and across the country, but this comes with a reminder that the variant experts believe will respond to the vaccines. this morning, new details on that new more contagious variant from the uk now detected in

california. the 30-year-old man in san diego has not needed to be hospitalized. just one day after the first case in the country was identified in colorado and now a second possible case there. though it hasn't been confirmed. both are members of colorado's national guard deployed last week to a small rural town to help a nursing home amid an outbreak. a majority of the staff testing positive. >> we don't know if there's ongoing transmission but that is focus of our ongoing investigation and our testing efforts. >> reporter: as labs screen for more cases, more frustration over the vaccine rollout. the u.s. falling behind other nations and officials admitting for the first time it's going slower than expected, blaming the holidays and bad weather but saying it will improve. >> here's what i have confidence in, every day, everybody gets better, and i believe that uptake will increase. >> reporter: the trump administration promised 20

can tros fee that new mutation spreads and 20 more people in england put under the toughest restrictions as cases surge and james longman has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, mary. yeah, the crisis here in britain only seems to be deepening. some 40 million are living under the harshest possible restrictions. lockdowns mean that all nonessential businesses must close and people are told they must not mix like christmas, new year's eve celebrations being canceled and must stay home, as cases continue to soar here. 983 deaths reported just one day here. that's a new record since april so all hopes on the vaccine and the new vaccination strategy to try to get as many people vaccinated with the first dose as possible. health experts say the second dose is, of course, vital but that first one could stop mass hospitalizations which is, of course, the goal to protect health services so some health experts in the united states according to the same strategy be rolled out across america. >> james, as you said, all hopes on the vaccine. james, thank you so much.

joining us now is surgeon general dr. jerome adams. dr. adams, happy new year's eve. thanks for being with us. >> i always wanted to do new year's eve in times square but in true 2020 fashion we're doing it virtually. >> here we are. leaders of "operation warp speed" say it's not going as quickly as planned. 2 million vaccinations logged falling far short of 20 million vaccines by the end of the year by the administration. do you agree with the president's assessment that fault lies at the local level, not the federal? >> here's what the american people need to know. there's vaccines manufactured. there's vaccines allocated and delivered and then there's vaccines put in arms. i used to run a state health department. people forget that. we've always underfunded public health going back several decades and so chronically we need to continue to fund state and local public health better. but i want people to know that

as someone who gets to run a health department i've been out on the ground with these health departments since september, dr. birx has been out on the ground and we have been working with them to ramp up their ability to administer these vaccines. from a federal perspective we are on track to have 20 million people able to be vaccinated, doses on the ground, by the end of next week as general perna said and we're on track from that perspective and have to help the state even local entities to get them administered. >> right, because having the ability is one thing but there are reports washington state has used only a fraction of the vaccine doses delivered there. in maryland, it's estimated 0% of the state's vaccines have not been administered and the governor says federal support is lacking. the federal government spent a on the of money on these vaccines, public health agencies are often underfunded and stretched thing. shouldn't the federal government be doing more? >> women -- well, this is what we have been talking about every

single day. here's what i want people to understand. i talked to tony fauci and we always knew that this was going to take a while to ramp up. we're still early, 17 days from eua. what people should be most excited about is that the curve is rapidly increasing in terms of number of people being vaccinated so we shouldn't extrapolate from what happened yesterday to what's going to happen six months from now but make sure it continues to go up and continue to support our state and public health departments which is what we're doing. >> and that curve going up is good news. another case of the uk variant has been con nirmd the u.s., first in colorado, now in california. because viruses mutate, that's what they do, we're likely to see more variants, how worried should we be? >> well, here's what you should do. take any worry you have and understand the vaccines still look like they're going to work and we talked to dr. collins and dr. fauci about that as recently as yesterday. a more contagious variant means it's more critical we follow

rained on all of our parades. well, now this morning we are celebrating the life of a tv icon. dawn wells famous for playing mary ann on "gilligan's island" passing away at 82 years old from covid-19. diane macedo joins us with a look at her legacy, good morning. >> reporter: janai, like so many people, "gilligan's island" was way before my time. but i've probably seen every episode now. mary and was just as iconic as the show itself, now so is the legacy she leaves behind. best known for playing mary ann, the sweet girl interest kansas on the classic "gilligan's island." ♪ the professor and mary ann here on gilligan's -- >> reporter: dawn wells started the show at the age of 25, 9 the youngest of her fellow castmates. >> flowers. >> reporter: but while "gilligan's island" only lasted three years, wells became an

an earthquake struck the north bay at about 5:42 morning. it woke up a whole lot of you across the bay area. no reports of damage. happening today in san francisco, the cliff house restaurant is going to close perm permanently after 157 years. on instagram and facebook, the longtime proprietors announced the iconic sign will be taken down at noon today. they say after days of negotiations with the national park service, talks fell apart. the mps said it offered them a new 3 1/2-year term to keep the restaurant open.

at the arlo hotel in downtown manhattan, they are considering possible charges for the woman including assault, grand larceny and attempted robbery and comes after a meeting between prosecutors and harrold's family. >> we met with the district attorney and he informed us that they had seen the hotel surveillance video and that it was very disturbing. >> reporter: police say they have identified the woman seen in this video but she has yet to come forward and reportedly lives out of state but, according to cnn in an unreleased phone interview, she's disputing the claims against her alleging she was the one assaulted seen on the ground at one point in the video and that things escalated after she first asked to see hotel footage and asked someone else in their lobby to empty their pockets before confronting keyon harrold jr. >> her phone was brought to her

after spending hours adrift, clinging to a water beacon in the pacific ocean. now this morning he is speaking out and sharing his story. will carr joins us with the latest. will, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, mary. what a story this is. that sailor was in the middle of a violent storm when he was tossed off of his boat. he hung on to that buoy for three hours before he was rescued. this is the moment when 64-year-old david simpson was rescued at sea after clinging to a beacon for hours after being knocked off his boat and telling his harrowing story to 9 news australia. >> the right break holding the dinghy, and it hit me in the ear, and i fell about 2 1/2, 3 meters. hit my ribs off the boat. i was concerned that i wouldn't be around for my family. >> reporter: after being knocked in the ocean, simpson swam to a beacon where he waited for a big wave to toss to the buoy.

custody as police search for as many as four others following this attack on a car in the heart of new york city. these videos taken earlier this week show the group punching a bmw, side mirrors, throwing their bikes onto the vehicle and at least one person smashing the windshield. >> i was fearful for my life and my mother's life. >> reporter: inside, a 36-year-old man and his mother, the pair had just finished donating items to a local charity when the group swarmed the car. >> they started pulling up in front of me on either side of me, they're ripping off the side mirrors and trying to start to bang the glass and ripping off the grill of the car. >> reporter: the driver who only wants to be known as max says his mother quickly called 911. during the assault. >> what i heard was help us, help us, they're going to kill us. >> reporter: what sparked the incident remains unclear, but witnesses say one cyclist hit the back of the
