this is abc 7 news. it's such a shame and it's a terrible start to this new year when we're hoping for less anger and hatred. >> a disturbing start to the new year for house speaker nancy pelosi, her san francisco home was sathe vandalized. failed efforts to provide americans with $2,000 stimulus checks. good morning, everybody, it's saturday, january 2nd, happy new year to all of you, i'm liz kreutz, we'll have more on the vandalism in pacific heights and the response from the fbi coming up in just a minute. but first, it is rainy out there. let's start with a quick look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. good morning, lisa? >> hey, liz, good morning to

you, certainly is slick out there. north bay favoring some of the showers this morning but we're still looking at the activity to last the next few hours, all around the bay area. as we look at live doppler 7 you can see that on the peninsula there, take away the clouds, a lot of this is falling below the radar beam so hard for the radar to pick it up. as we widen the view live doppler 7 shows lots of cloud cover out in the pacific and we're going to go with a cloudy theme for the rest of the day today with a possibility of some light rain showers becoming more widely scattered throughout the afternoon, only about a tenth of an inch expected. and as we go in for a closer look throughout the morning hours, here we are at 8:30, and you'll notice that just a few light returns here and as we go on through the afternoon clouds dominate the skies. so we'll go with that cool theme and another break for your sunday until the storm track gets pretty active for the week ahead. we'll talk about that in detail when we see you next.

speaker nancy pelosi's san francisco home was vandalized as we mentioned with a strong message about stimulus checks. luz pena spoke to neighbors and the security company in charge of many residents in the pacific heights neighborhood. >> reporter: graffiti with the phrases 2 k, cancel rent and we want everything. covered speaker nancy pelosi's garage door, on the sidewalk a disturbing image to many neighbors who woke up to this, a pig's head and fake blood. >> i don't think that this is a useful way to go about it and it's a terrible start to this new year. >> reporter: the vandals' message alluding to failed efforts to providing americans with a $2,000 stimulus check. >> the government should be doing all they can to give people assistance. >> reporter: security cameras cover her home, on the street guards, with a private security company hired to protect several residents in this affluent

neighborhood. >> is she one of the clients? >> no, she has her own security. >> reporter: it's unclear in nancy pelosi was home at the time of the vandalism. but this is not the first time these attacks take place. >> that's time they hung the hair dryers and stuff in the tree or whatever. >> reporter: we contacted the san francisco fbi office and they responded in part, in keeping with the doj policy we cannot confirm or deny specific fbi activity or the existence of investigations. san francisco police officers responded to a call of vandalism outside of nancy pelosi's home around 2:00 a.m. it's still unclear if any arrests have been made in this case. in san francisco, i'm luz pena, abc 7 news. and san francisco's cliff house restaurant was vandalized just a day after closing permanently. pictures from a viewer show large black letters spray painted on the walls as you can see, and then city staff started painting over the graffiti.

on thursday the iconic sign was removed. the owner say delays by a national park service to reach a long-term operating contract forced them to close. in the north bay a restaurant has been defying the stay at home order offering in person dining in their enclosed patio. reporter matt boone says the state is investigating. >> reporter: fume has not been hiding the fact they've been welcoming guests on their pate owe as well as in a semienclosed area even after the county went into a state stay at home order. >> i'm still working full-time so i'm willing to spend my money to help other people out cloip a customer says he doesn't want to show his face due to his job, says he came to dine in person to support the restaurant employees. >> reporter: i'm willing to risk, you know, possibly getting it to help other people survive. >> reporter: napa county has had 5,741 positive covid-19 cases,

2,400 of them were in the past month. the county's website currently lists their icu capacity at 0%. the owner of the restaurant spoke to abc 7 in may when they defied the indoor dining ban back then. he did not want to do an interview for this story but gave a statement, reading in part, bottom line, the closure of on premises dining is uncalled for, unjust, and will bankrupt an industry that has needlessly taken an unprecedented hit. fume bistro will remain open for on premises dining just as other essential businesses in our community are staying open. the city of napa and the county tell abc 7 they are aware of the restaurant and have referred the complaints to the state coronavirus task force as well as the department of alcoholic beverage control. in napa, matt boone, abc 7 news. fitness 19 in daly city and san bruno, defying state and county orders by staying open

indoors have closed. in an email to members the gym said san mateo county has fined them $3,000 twice this week and promised to issue more fines this they continued to stay open. fitness 19 said it would reopen once restrictions were lifted. california has started 2021 off by setting more coronavirus records. the state reported 585 deaths. by far the most in a single d since the pandemic started. the previous high was 432 set on wednesday. the number of people hospitalized did drop by 100. this is the first time in more than three weeks the state hasn't set a daily record in that category. the number of people in the icu is up to more than 4,500, though, and that is a new record. take a look at regional capacity statewide. the bay area dropped to 6.3%, a record low, since tracking started. the u.s. ushered in a new year with no relief from the coronavirus, reaching a record

20 million confirmed cases nationwide since the start of the pandemic. abc news reporter christine sloan has more on the virus and critical hospital shortages. >> reporter: despite health warnings against holiday travel and family gatherings the u.s. is entering 2021 with peak covid numbers, worries over yet another deadly surge and a new variant of the virus believed to be highly contagious. florida becoming the third state to identify the uk variant in a man in his 20s, with no history of travel. california now has four confirmed cases of the variant. none of the men infected there have had any known contact with each other. the crisis growing more dire, more than 10,000 lives lost to covid-19 in just the last three days. in california los angeles seeing four times as many cases in december than in november, a record 585 dcovid deaths in jus 24 hours. hospitals and health care workers pushed to the brink. >> we're stretched so thin.

it's pretty unimaginable. >> in icu we are out of our capacity, we're creating spaces from nowhere. >> reporter: in north carolina, an emergency field hospital going up for the first time, and with the brunt of vaccine planning falling on large hospitals, small clinics and private pharmacy chains, states have used only a small percentage of their stockpiles. so far the u.s. has only administered about 3 million vaccinations of the 20 million promised by the trump administration by the new year. and if the pace doesn't pick up some pfizer doses could potentially expire while sitting in freezers. christine sloan, abc news, new york. to go service at the san francisco main library has been suspended for two days due to a possible case of covid-19 involving a staff member. the library sent an email to patrons saying staff is responding siftly and appropriately to undertake a thorough workplace contact

bridges that's all now electronic toll collection, all electronic toll collection. drivers haven't seen a toll taker at a bridge since march when they were all sent home because of the pandemic. there is no toll increase this year. there will be a $1 hike starting on january 1st of 2022. and we have new details this morning on the deadly new year's eve hit and run crash in san francisco's soma district. police now say the person who hit and killed two women in a crosswalk on thursday is 45-year-old troy mccallister who was out of prison on parole. officers say mcallister was driving a stolen car under the influence of drugs and alcohol with a gun and methamphetamines with him at the time. he was chased by witnesses until police got to him. he remained free despite other arrests in the city in recent months. this morning work on the san francisco giant's mission rock project of the future is finally starting to take shape.

according to the chronicle, the first concrete was poured last month for the space in china basin park across from the ballpark. originally a marshland, the parking lot will transform now into this modern green shoreline park with two housing towers and office buildings. it has been in the works since 2008. now full steam ahead towards a hopeful completion date at the end of 2022. and in the east bay a family of oscar grant gathered at the fruit vail bart station 12 years after he was fatally shot by an officer. an officer who was fired but never charged be arrested. they claim the officer pinned grant down with a knee to his neck and that his actions led to grant's death. >> why aren't they bringing him to the bay area to question him and engage him and investigate? what is the da's office waiting for? >> alameda county district attorney nancy o'malley's office

reopened the case last october but they have not commented since. several new laws now in effect in this new year. anytime police kill a person who isn't armed the state attorney general must investigate. the oscar grant case, for instance, would be an example. police are also no longer allowed to use neck restraints or choke holds. county supervisors have more oversight of county sheriffs. california now has a task force on slavely reparations. there's another law that came about during the country's reckoning with race and social justice. it's the first law of its kind in the nation and the task force will make recommendations. there are also significant changes coming to the real estate market this year because of the passage of proposition 19. the first is in february. those who inherit a home must use it as their primary residence or else the tax value gets reassessed. in april homeowners 55 or older or those who have lost their

was born at 12:06 yesterday morning at ucsf and it appears he is the first baby of the new year in the bay area. abc 7 news spoke to the proud parents. >> so went in for a c-section around 11:50. >> i remember getting the countdown on the clock and it was, you know, it struck midnight. they said a little happy new year's to everybody, and then shortly thereafter, six minutes after. >> yeah, 12:06, so i was getting a c-section and i heard them say happy new year. >> laura says she went in to get induced on december 30th, 36 hours later when it wasn't going quite as expected she then had a c-section. this is the couple's first child. and for a moment we thought a baby born in the south bay at good samaritan hospital in san jose was the first. the batiato family welcomed their third child, a boy at

12:25 a.m. yesterday. congratulations to all. and for some hearty souls this is the only way to begin a new year, we ventured out to ocean beach in san francisco and watched a handful of people take the plunge into the chilly 53 degree water. >> it felt really good. i was really thinking it was going to be cold and horrible but as soon as we got in i felt really invigorated. what a way to start the year. >> a group called the world naked bike ride promoted the event on social media. some of those who participated also took the opportunity to enjoy the moment with some champagne. good to see not everything is cancelled during covid, you know, that's a social distanced activity. >> jump in the water. plenty of it around here and yeah, that is pretty cold. in fact, i was at the beach on saturday. was it saturday? no, today's saturday. it was thursday. and it was chilly but yeah there were little kids running around, some clothes and some not. here's a look at live doppler 7

as we see the shower activity. it is very light and it will remain light, mainly throughout the we transition into a dryer pattern. so here's a look at the loop and you'll notice that we've got a progressive system here where the activity continues to push from the north to the south and as we look at the bigger picture, check out all the cloud cover here. a couple systems to point out as we get into the week ahead. as you look right now, there's fog and a lot of clouds with temperatures in the upper 40s, san mateo looking at about 50, half moon bay and napa as well as san jose, 51 in fremont. check out the visibility, yeah, it is rough out there, with about a mile and a half in san carlos, over two miles up in the north bay. but in some spots you get right on the fog and you can't see anything in front of you so it is certainly tricky out there from concord over a mile. and just a mile here. from half moon bay. 24 hour temperature change with all the cloud cover, yes, it's a lot milder out there but with

the wet weather it certainly feels cold and we'll continue that cool theme as we dry out throughout the rest of the weekend. so looking at light showers this morning, mainly in the morning hours. then we'll be dry into your sunday, but cloudy and cool as we look at the next system arriving into late sunday and monday, this one looks a little stronger. and we're watching that as that could be an indication that we could get some debris flow from where we had all the fires t burn scar area. 10:00, a few light returns there up in the north bay, they'll continue through the afternoon. very isolated. but still enough moisture out there that we can't rule out showers throughout your saturday afternoon. saturday night we're trending dryer into sunday as we get into late saturday, still a lot of clouds around. so what you can expect from now until late saturday is just a couple hundredths, as we said before, under a tenth of an inch. so certainly crewel be wet at times, but not a washout if you want to take the dog out, or certainly get a walk in, as we

look at your monday morning, the next system sunday night into monday it's a level 1. as we go through your tuesday, looking at dry conditions. and actually as we get into wednesday and thursday, another light system. and then looks like the storm track heading to the north thursday into friday. so we will remain quite active, nothing too big out there but that system into monday looking stronger. so we'll have to watch that for you. and as we look at the rainfall totals into your monday, you could see upwards of an inch, maybe more than that in the coastal hills, over into the south bay, maybe a half inch and get into late thursday, some of these totals over an inch, maybe an inch and a half. hopefully that verifies. highs today from the upper 50s for you with a lot of cloud cover in livermore, about 61 in san jose. 59 in san mateo as well as palo alto and the accuweather seven-day forecast, we've got a level 2 on that monday system because of the fact we could see

argen. lisa, a good way to start 2021. >> yes, it is with the rain, liz. we have our level 1 system, good morning, everyone, happy new year. as we look at live doppler 7 a lot of moisture out there, it looks a little bit more progressive, which means that we'll have this move through the area in the morning hours, which is going to allow us for just some leftover showers this afternoon. but as we widen the view, check it out, yeah, a lot of cloud cover and embedded in that is our next system that arrives later on sunday into monday. this system, though, the level 1 with less than a tenth of an inch for most areas bringing us the wet slippery roadways, visibility one to two miles from the coast to the irport, overa mile in san carlos, over into the east bay, just over a mile for our friends in concord. up to the north bay, just about two miles. 6:00, we've got the showers around the bay area, the light showers into noontime. plenty of clouds, maybe an isolated shower, numbers still

in the 50s throughout the day and as we get towards your 5:00, mainly a mostly cloudy sky and we'll continue that theme throughout the overnight hours but things do change as we get into the second half of your weekend. we'll talk about rain totals coming up. the rollout of the covid-19 vaccine is falling far short of promises made by health officials, republican senator mitt romney is calling the trump administration's guidance to states quote, incomprehensible and inexcusable. so what's holding up the mission and what can be done to get it back on track? here's abc news reporter trevor ult. >> reporter: after days of americans enduring hours long lines for vaccinations, frustration is mounting over a campaign that's far behind schedule and in some communities grinding to a halt this holiday weekend, officials slamming the federal government's vaccine rollout strategy. >> we've got to organize this like the national emergency that it is. we've sat back and assumed that somehow creating the vaccine was all we had to do. and that was simply inadequate.

>> reporter: republican senator mitt romney says the lack of a comprehensive federal vaccination plan is as incomprehensible as it is inexcusable. suggesting a slew of possible ways to accelerate the process, like setting up vaccination sites at every school. >> my plan is just put out there as a, if you will, a brainstorming device to let people start thinking about some ideas. but let's get going with a plan that will really get our people inoculated. >> reporter: president-elect joe biden tweeting friday the biden-harris administration will spare no effort to make sure people are getting vaccinated. the u.s. came up about 17 million vaccinations short over the 20 million promised by the new year. if the pace doesn't pick up by january initial doses of pfizer's vaccine could potentially expire in freezers and refrigerators. >> this part doesn't feel like warp speed. this is a national emergency, 3,000 people a day are dying. >> reporter: with the brunt of the planning falling to large

hospitals, small clinics and private pharmacy chains states have so far administered dismal percentages of their stockpiles and texas has hundreds of thousands of unused doses but this massive civic center site is closed for the holiday weekend. >> 100,000 texans need to get vaccinated on a daily basis and you can't do calling around pharmacy stores. >> reporter: in wisconsin, neighbors reacting to a pharmacist accused of deliberately sabotaging hundreds of doses. >> there's people that should have got those shots and what if they get the virus now? it's horrible that somebody would do that on purpose. >> reporter: some people are pushing for the united states to alter the dosing regimen to allow more people to get the first shots of the vaccine and gain some level of protection. dr. anthony fauci and other public health officials say the u.s. will stay the course for now, waiting three weeks between pfizer shots and four weeks for moderna. trefrl ult, abc news, new york. for the vast majority of us

2021 is poised to be the year that we each get the covid-19 vaccine. for women who are pregnant or breast-feeding there's a question about whether they should take it, they weren't included in the vaccine trials but the medical community says it's safe. >> reporter: allison flower is a frontline health care worker in oakland and a mom to 10 month old lucy. >> she was born in february and we're still nursing her, yeah. >> reporter: like so many new moms she has questions about the covid-19 vaccine. >> i think that all of us just want to do what is best for our children. >> reporter: allison is part of bay area breast-feeding support, a popular facebook group founded by serena meyer, a registered nurse and lactation consultant. meyer says many women in the group have expressed concerns since pregnant and breast-feeding women were not included in the vaccine trials. >> the topic of, like, is this safe, do i have to wean? has come up quite a bit. >> reporter: dr. stephanie ga is an assistant professor of maternal me tall medicine at

ucsf who has been studying the impacts of covid-19 on pregnant women. >> scientifically there's probably very, were low risk of anything bad happening during pregnancy with the vaccine, but we don't have any direct proof yet because it hasn't been studied, unfortunately. >> reporter: still, dr. ga says the current med sal consensus is that the vaccine is safe. for one, the vaccine does not contain any live virus which is something pregnant women are often advised to avied. it's also a matter of assessing the risk versus the potential benefits. >> the potential benefits of a vaccine working are great. we know covid-19 is really dangerous in pregnancy. >> reporter: both dr. ga and meyer say they are advising their patients take the vaccine. >> somehow, like pregnant people become these like unicorns that can't have health care. i'm just like, i don't think that's helpful. >> reporter: but until there's more data it's still a little bit of an unknown. dr. ga says ultimately it's up to each individual woman along with her doctor to make that decision. >> talk to your family, you
