building a better bay area for a safe and secure future. this is abc 7 news. it's such a shame and it's a terrible start to this new year when we're hoping for less anger and hatred. >> a disturbing start to the new year for house speaker nancy pelosi, her san francisco home vandalized. the message graffitied on her garage door apparently referenced failed efforts to provide americans with $2,000 stimulus checks. good morning, everybody, it's saturday, january 2nd, 2021. sounds good to say that, right? i'm liz kreutz and we'll have more on the vandalism in pacific heights and the response from the fbi coming up in just a moment. but first let's start with a quick look at the weather. >> good morning, and fog out there, reducing visibility, it's a level 1 system, looking from live doppler 7 right now. a smattering of showers on the

peninsula in the north bay. santa cruz mountains, picked up about .2. the system is weak, sliding to the south and east of us. looking out in the pacific we have another stronger storm arriving late tomorrow night into monday. this one is a level 1 system with anywhere from a couple hundredths to about a tenth left of it but we could see a scattered shower throughout the afternoon. two mile visibility, better than that at sfo and novato, with a mile on the coast, three miles to san carlos airport. exploratorium camera, 9:00 we have the fog and showers, we're left with cloudy skies, a cool afternoon, that sun setting after 5:00 tonight and looking at 9:00, plenty of clouds, but we're dry. we will carry that theme over to the second half of your weekend but transitioning, soon, to a level 2 system, details in a few minutes. liz? >> all right, lisa, thank you. speaker nancy pelosi, san francisco home was vandalized as we mentioned with a strong message about stimulus checks, abc 7 news reporter luz pena

spoke to neighbors and the security company in charge of many residents in the pacific heights neighborhood. >> reporter: graffiti with the phrases 2k, cancel rent and we want everything. covered speaker nancy pelosi's garage door, on the sidewalk a disturbing image to many neighbors who woke up to this, a pig's head and fake blood. >> i don't think that this is a useful way to go about it and it's a terrible start to this new year. >> reporter: the vandals' message alluding to failed efforts to providing americans with a $2,000 stimulus check. >> the government should be doing all they can to give people assistance. >> reporter: security cameras cover nancy pelosi's home, on the street guards like -- with a private security company hired to protect several residents in this affluent neighborhood. >> is she one of the clients? >> no, she has her own security. >> reporter: it's still unclear if nancy pelosi was home at the

time of the vandalism. but this guard says this is not the first time these attacks take place. >> last time where they hung all the hair dryers and stuff in the tree or whatever. >> reporter: we contacted the san francisco fbi office and they responded in part, in keeping with the doj policy we cannot confirm or deny specific fbi activity or the existence of investigations. san francisco police officers responded to a call of vandalism outside of nancy pelosi's home around 2:00 a.m. it's still unclear if any arrests have been made in this case. in san francisco, i'm luz pena, abc 7 news. and san francisco's cliff house restaurant was vandalized just a day after closing permanently. pictures from a viewer show large black letters spray painted on the walls. city staff started painting over the graffiti. on thursday the iconic sign was removed. the owner say delays by a national park service to reach a long-term operating contract

with them forced them to close. in the north bay a napa restaurant has been defying the stay at home order offering in person dining in their enclosed patio. abc 7 news reporter matt boone says the state is investigating. >> reporter: with string lighting and heat lamps powered up fume bistro has not been hiding the fact they've been welcoming guests on their pate owe as well as in a semienclosed area even after the county went into a state stay at home order. on december 18th. >> i'm still working full-time so i'm willing to spend my money to help other people out. >> reporter: a customer who says he doesn't want to show his face due to his job, says he came to dine in person to support the restaurant employees. >> reporter: i'm willing to risk, you know, possibly getting it to help other people survive. >> reporter: napa county has had 5,741 positive covid-19 cases, 2,400 of them were in the past month. the county's website currently

lists their icu capacity at 0%. the owner of the restaurant spoke to abc 7 in may when they defied the indoor dining ban back then. he did not want to do an interview for this story but gave a statement, reading in part, bottom line, the closure of on premises dining is uncalled for, unjust, and will bankrupt an industry that has needlessly taken an unprecedented hit. fume bistro will remain open for on premises dining just as other essential businesses in our community are staying open. the city of napa and the county tell abc 7 they are aware of the restaurant and have referred the complaints to the state coronavirus task force as well as the department of alcoholic beverage control. in napa, matt boone, abc 7 news. new developments, fitness 19 in daly city and san bruno, which have been defying state and county orders by staying open indoors have closed. in an email to members the gym

said san mateo county has fined them $3,000 twice this week and promised to issue more fines if they continued to operate. fitness 19 said it would reopen once restrictions were lifted. california has started 2021 off by setting more coronavirus records. the state reported 585 deaths. by far the most in a single day since the pandemic started. the previous high was 432 set on wednesday. the number of people hospitalized did drop by 100. this is the first time in more than three weeks the state hasn't set a daily record in that category. that said, the number of people in the icu is up to more than 4,500, and that is a new record. take a look now at regional # capacity statewide. regional icu capacity. the bay area dropped to 6.3%, a record low, since tracking started. the u.s. ushered in a new year with no relief from the coronavirus, reaching a record 20 million confirmed cases nationwide since the start of the pandemic. abc news reporter christine

sloan has more on the virus and across the country as well as the critical hospital shortages. >> reporter: despite health warnings against holiday travel and family gatherings the u.s. is entering 2021 with peak covid numbers, worries over yet another deadly surge and a new variant of the virus believed to be highly contagious. florida becoming the third state to identify the uk variant in a man in his 20s, with no history of travel. california now has four confirmed cases of the variant. none of the men infected there have had any known contact with each other. the crisis growing more dire, more than 10,000 lives lost to covid-19 in just the last three days. in california los angeles seeing four times as many cases in december than in november, a record 585 covid deaths in just 24 hours. hospitals and health care workers pushed to the brink. >> we're stretched so thin. it's pretty unimaginable.

>> in icu we are out of our capacity, we're creating spaces from nowhere. >> reporter: in north carolina, an emergency field hospital going up for the first time, and with the brunt of vaccine planning falling on large hospitals, small clinics and private pharmacy chains, states have used only a small percentage of their stockpiles. so far the u.s. has only administered about 3 million vaccinations of the 20 million promised by the trump administration by the new year. and if the pace doesn't pick up some pfizer doses could potentially expire while sitting in freezers. christine sloan, abc news, new york. to go service at the san francisco main library has been suspended for two days due to a possible case of covid-19 involving a staff member. the library sent an email to patrons saying staff is responding swiftly and appropriately to undertake a thorough workplace contact tracing investigation. the to go service will be unavailable today and tomorrow while the site is cleaned.

bridges that's all now have all electronic toll collection. drivers haven't seen a toll taker at a bridge since march when they were all sent home because of the pandemic. # there is no toll increase this year. there will be a $1 hike starting on january 1st of 2022. and we have new details this morning on the deadly new year's eve hit and run crash in san francisco's soma district. police now say the person who hit and killed two women in a crosswalk on thursday is 45-year-old troy mcallister who was out of prison on parole. officers say mcallister was driving a stolen car under the influence of drugs and alcohol with a gun and methamphetamines with him at the time. he was chased by witnesses until police got to him. he was released from prison in april and remained free despite several other arrests in the city in recent months. this morning work on the san francisco giant's mission rock project of the future is finally starting to take shape. according to the chronicle, the

first concrete was poured last month for the space in china basin park across from the ballpark. originally a marshland, the parking lot will transform into this modern green shoreline park with two housing towers and office buildings. it has been in the works since 2008. now full steam ahead towards a hopeful completion date at the end of 2022. and in the east bay a family of oscar grant gathered at the fruitvale bart station 12 years after he was fatally shot by an officer. an officer who was fired but never charged be arrested. they claim the officer pinned grant down with a knee to his neck and that his actions led to grant's death. >> why aren't they bringing him to the bay area to question him and engage him and investigate? what is the da's office waiting for? >> alameda county district attorney nancy o'malley's office reopened the case last october but they have not commented since.

now there are several new laws that address police and criminal justice reform that are now in effect here in the start of 2021. anytime police kill a person who isn't armed the state attorney general must investigate. the oscar grant case, for instance, would be an example. police are also no longer allowed to use neck restraints or choke holds. county supervisors have more oversight of county sheriffs. california now has a task force on slavery reparations. that's another law that came about during the country's reckoning with race and social justice. it's the first law of its kind in the nation and the task force will make recommendations. and there are also significant changes coming to the real estate market this year because of the passage of prop 19. the first is in february. those who inherit a home must use it as their primary residence or else the tax value gets reassessed. in april homeowners 55 or older or those who have lost their

home in a disaster will be able to transfer the tax assessment to another home even if it's more expensive. you can find a full list of new laws by going to our website. abc7news.com. 2020 was a tough year, but through it all the key is to hang onto hope, right. that's the message from sacramento's new year's baby of 1982. that cute little baby there, reporter van tu is in sacramento and introduces us to the woman who is no longer a baby, now she is dr. vanessa walker. >> reporter: this was in 1982. a lot has changed since then when sacramento welcomed new year baby vanessa patterson. one thing remains certain, taxes. # >> we're going to lose our tax deduction never dreaming when she was born at 12:20 she would be the first baby in town. i was really surprised. >> reporter: 39 years later baby have a naes is a is now dr. vanessa walker, an icu doctor on the front line of the coronavirus pandemic.

>> i was born to be a pulmonary critical care doctor. >> reporter: her mother was an icu nurse and her father still works as a respiratory therapist. 2020 has delivered unparalleled challenges. she says there's still so much to be grateful for. >> i get to ring in the new year. i'm here, i'm alive, i'm healthy. >> reporter: this year she'll spend her birthday working 15 hour shifts in the icu and reflecting. she says 2020 marked a year of learning. >> being able to be on the cutting edge of treating a new disease that nobody knew about. >> reporter: and a year of triumphs. >> seeing all the things that we have been able to do in society, coming together and science has just been amazing. >> that was van tu reporting. back here in the bay area, families welcomed new members at the stroke of midnight on new year's day. meet jack, and his parents, laslo and laura. jack was born at 12:06 yesterday

morning at ucsf and it appears he is the first baby of the new year here in the bay area. abc 7 news spoke to the proud parents. >> so went in for a c-section around 11:50. >> 11:50. and i remember getting the countdown on the clock and it struck midnight. they said a little happy new year's to everybody, and then shortly thereafter, six minutes after. he was born. >> yeah, 12:06, so i was getting a c-section and i heard them say happy new year. >> laura says she went in to get induced on december 30th, 36 hours later when it wasn't going quite as expected she then had a c-section. this is the couple's first child. and for some hearty souls this is the only way to begin a new year. we ventured out to ocean beach in san francisco and watched a handful of people take the plunge into the chilly 53 degree weather. >> it felt really good. i was really thinking it was going to be cold and horrible.

but as soon as we got in i felt really invigorated. what a way to start the year. >> a group called the world naked bike ride promoted the event on social media. some of those who participated also took the opportunity to enjoy the moment with some champagne. happy for them, that this is what they did. i was in bed -- actually, no, i was working, not my way to start the new year, but fun to watch. >> we have a high surf advisory today through tomorrow morning. pretty treacherous out interest with wave heights up to 30 feet. that would be certainly excessive. more likely 25 feet. but we'll show you where the current wave heights are right now. looking at live doppler 7 it certainly is sloppy out there with the slick roadways and there is some fog. so as we put this into motion. this will continue to wind down. so the most activity will be in the morning hours, and then throughout the afternoon, could see an isolated shower, but overall we're looking at the

cloud cover hanging on into your sunday and a stronger system arriving late sunday into monday. and here's a look at some fog, and current numbers, which are pretty mild from about 47 san le and row, castro valley, 49 in richmond, upper 40s on the coast here from pacifica, with 48 in novato, and san francisco. the current fog, well it has been worse with less than a mile, now we're over two miles. as we look at novato, three quarters of a mile half moon bay and about four miles, that's a big improvement over into our east bay, and with all the cloud cover, the moisture out there, we are 11 to 12, even 15 degrees milder. and as we look out at san jose, you can see how cloudy it is here. with the light rain showers, mainly in the morning hours. we'll see the clouds hang on throughout the day today. maybe a sprinkle overnight but overall we're dry into sunday. it's sunday night into monday. we get a stronger system, it's a quick mover, but with brief heavy downpours and gusty winds it will be a level 2 on our

storm impact scale. high surf advisory, 10 to 15 feet right now. current wave heights from sonoma to the central coast and the breakers up to 25 feet. certainly a lot of activity out in the pacific. as we look at the rainfall throughout the morning hours, there isn't much of it but it is remaining in the forecast throughout the day today, even into the afternoon, we're only a couple hundredths is expected. and as we get into your sunday, still looking at the cloud cover. so this carries over, the clouds anyway, into sunday. here are the rainfall amounts, anywhere from .01, redwood city to today, another .05 in novato. sunday night into monday, we're pretty wet here, we've got snow lined up in the sierra nevada with very gusty winds, get a break into tuesday, weaker system arrives wednesday into thursday, that's a level 1 system, and at this point the rest of the week looks like the storm track will miss us.

so if the first storm system brings about an inch to two inches from the coastal hills, you can see how it adds up here into monday night. might be a little bit aggressive into the east bay, but let's add on another third to a half inch into the middle of the week, and we could still see an inch to an inch and a half with these totals as we get towards the end of the first week of the new year. highs today from the upper 50s to the low 60s, so it's a cool, gray afternoon with a chance of a shower out there. the accuweather seven-day forecast, this level 1 system, the lagt rain showers mainly in the morning, but still a lingering chance throughout the afternoon. cloudy through your sunday, level 2 system after midnight into monday with strong gusty winds, heavy downpours at times but then it moves quickly out of here for a break on tuesday. and then by wednesday into thursday looking at a weaker system arriving. so the good news is, is that we're getting some rain, we'll watch that system into monday, simply because of all those areas, liz, that have lost the

there. here's a look at the current picture and live doppler 7 picking up on the scattered light showers from the south bay to the coast and there isn't much out there but as we widen the view we've got a level 2 system on the way, late sunday into monday. so right now we are looking at the showers lasting through the morning hours but we could see a chance of a shower throughout the afternoon. we've got wet slippery roadways, anywhere from a couple hundredths to a tenth of an inch throughout the rest of the day. over two mile visibility in concord with just three quarters of a mile half moon bay, three miles at the san carlos airport, and there's a look at the current picture as we go through 7:00. the light rain. temperatures in the 40s and 50s. by noontime. a lot of cloud cover, a cool afternoon, maybe a sprinkle here or there, 5:00, we're still underneath the clouds and then into the late day hours, we're looking at the drier conditions, cloud cover insulating us tonight. we'll time out the next rain. and it's looking stronger into

monday. liz? >> all right, lisa, thank you. the rollout of the covid-19 vaccine is falling short of promises made by health officials. republican senator mitt romney is calling the trump administration's guidance to states, quote, incomprehensible and inexcusable. what's holding up the mission and what can be done to get it back on track? here's abc 7 news reporter trevor ault. >> reporter: after days of americans enduring hours long lines for vaccinations, frustration is mounting over a campaign that's far behind schedule and in some communities grinding to a halt this holiday weekend, officials slamming the federal government's vaccine rollout strategy. >> we've got to organize this like the national emergency that it is. we've sat back and assumed that somehow creating the vaccine was all we had to do. and that was simply inadequate. >> reporter: republican senator mitt romney says the lack of a comprehensive federal vaccination plan is as incomprehensible as it is inexcusable. suggesting a slew of possible ways to accelerate the process,

like setting up vaccination sites at every school. >> my plan is just put out there as a, if you will, a brainstorming device to let people start thinking about some ideas. but let's get going with a plan that will really get our people inoculated. >> reporter: president-elect joe biden tweeting friday the biden-harris administration will spare no effort to make sure people are getting vaccinated. the u.s. came up about 17 million vaccinations short over the 20 million promised by the new year. if the pace doesn't pick up by end of january, some initial doses of pfizer's vaccine could potentially expire in freezers and refrigerators. >> this part doesn't feel like warp speed. this is a national emergency, 3,000 people a day are dying. >> reporter: with the brunt of the planning falling to large hospitals, small clinics and private pharmacy chains, states have so far administered dismal percentages of their stockpiles and texas has hundreds of thousands of unused doses but this massive civic center site

is closed for the holiday weekend. >> 100,000 texans need to get vaccinated on a daily basis and you can't do that calling around pharmacy stores. >> reporter: in wisconsin, neighbors reacting to a pharmacist accused of deliberately sabotaging hundreds of doses. >> there's people that should have got those shots and what if they get the virus now? it's horrible that somebody would do that on purpose. >> reporter: some people are pushing for the united states to alter the dosing regimen to allow more people to get the first shots of the vaccine and gain some level of protection. dr. anthony fauci and other public health officials say the u.s. will stay the course for now, waiting three weeks between pfizer shots and four weeks for moderna. trevor ault, abc news, new york. for the vast majority of us 2021 is poised to be the year that we each get the covid-19 vaccine. but for pregnant women or breast-feeding women, there is a question about whether they should take it, they weren't included in the vaccine trials

the medical community, though, says it's safe. >> reporter: allison flower is a frontline health care worker in oakland and a mom to 10 month old lucy. >> she was born in february and we're still nursing her, yeah. >> reporter: like so many new moms she has questions about the covid-19 vaccine. >> i think that all of us just want to do what is best for our children. >> reporter: allison is part of bay area breast-feeding support, a popular facebook group founded by serena meyer, a registered nurse and lactation consultant. meyer says many women in the group have expressed concerns since pregnant and breast-feeding women were not included in the vaccine trials. >> the topic of, like, is this safe, do i have to wean? has come up quite a bit. >> reporter: dr. stephanie gaw is an assistant professor of maternal fetal medicine at ucsf who has been studying the impacts of covid-19 on pregnant women. >> scientifically there's probably very, very low risk of anything bad happening during pregnancy with the vaccine, but

we don't have any direct proof yet because it hasn't been studied, unfortunately. >> reporter: still, dr. gaw says the current medical consensus is that the vaccine is safe. for one, the vaccine does not contain any live virus which is something pregnant women are often advised to avoid. it's also a matter of assessing the risk versus the potential benefits. >> the potential benefits of a vaccine working are great. we know covid-19 is really dangerous in pregnancy. >> reporter: both dr. gaw and meyer say they are advising their patients take the vaccine. >> somehow, like pregnant people become these like unicorns that can't have health care. i'm just like, i don't think that's helpful. >> reporter: but until there's more data it's still a little bit of an unknown. dr. gaw says ultimately it's up to each individual woman along with her doctor to make that decision. >> talk to your family, you know, your own risks, if i were pregnant right now i would get it. are you wondering when it will be your turn to be vaccinated?

his tenure, and warned that objecting to the results would force them to publicly oppose the president. but at least 140 house conservatives plan to do just that. and at least one gop senator josh hawley, republican senator ben sasse warning the president and his allies are playing with fire. >> senator hawley could be joined by several of his senate colleagues, including georgia senator kelly loeffler who's fighting to keep her seat in one of those two george runoffs. more than 3 million have voted ahead of that election, a state record. alex presha, abc news, washington. this morning, officials are warning of a new round of scams with a new round of stimulus checks going out. the better business bureau says scammers are claiming you need to provide personal information to received the money. scammers are sending texts and emails and making robocalls. consumer advocates say you should not reply to any messages, there are no processing fees involved with the stimulus payments so be aware if anyone is asking you to

lost to arizona state by three. that is a wrap on morning sports. have a great weekend, everybody. i'm larry beil. let's get a check of the weather now with meteorologist lisa argen, love larry's spirit, we are happy it's 2021, aren't we? >> we're happy it's 2021 and you might be happy with the seven-day outlook because we are looking at more wet weather to come into play. in fact, a stronger system than this one, that is weakening as we get into your saturday. it's moving in a southeasterly direction and we have those southerly winds ahead of it, so slightly milder. we've had some dense fog that is improving and as we look right now at live doppler 7 you can see that it continues to move to the south and east of us. and we can't rule out a shower throughout the day today because the atmosphere still pretty moist. you can see all the cloud cover here out in the pacific, next organized storm comes in sunday night into monday. that will be a level 2 system with some brief heavy downpours

and some gusty winds. here's a look at our exploratorium cam are, where it is pretty wet out there, numbers from the upper 40s to low 50s there in oakland, and also here in emeryville, you can see, yeah, pretty dark, sun coming up after 7:00 but it does set after 5:00 with 49 in santa rosa, 46 by the delta. otherwise, we are looking at a little lit of fog here as we go in closer for the north bay, and along the coast, with visibilities anywhere from about two miles to just one mile right along half moon bay. there's a look at the airport, and this system will be winding down, but still a chance of a shower throughout the day today. cloudy skies for your sunday, rain and wind arrive late tomorrow, into monday. a high surf advisory, current wave heights, 10 to 15 feet. so from sonoma to the central coast, we're looking at some large breakers, up to 25 feet, even 30 feet, not out of the question. there's the look at the rest of today, where we see a chance of some isolated showers, 2:00 in the afternoon, it's cloudy, it's

cool, and we're dry into your saturday night, maybe a sprinkle or two, through the overnight hours, but rainfall amounts, through about 11:00 tonight, from .01 to anywhere from about .05. we've picked up about .2 up in the north bay. this is what is going to come into play as we get into your very early monday morning, starting out with a few showers, then the heavier rain bands from about 6:00 into the north bay, moving across the south bay, we'll stop this at about 8:30 in the morning. so if you're planning ongoing to work on monday, we're looking at some slick roadways, and that level 2 system with those gusty winds. snow pack is looking not bad at 52% of average. you can see the northern sierra, 54% from yosemite, the central sierra, 59%. around big bay area, about 35%. adding to that with a winter storm watch from tomorrow night into monday night. with high elevations, snow, so that's some good news, highs

good morning, america. the stormy start to the new year. a major system pounding much of the u.s. with snow and ice, cars and trucks overturning ahead of what's expected to be the busiest travel day of the season. the storm now moving across the northeast with another storm right behind it. our weather team tracking it all. 20 million cases. the u.s. soaring past a new coronavirus milestone. the anger over the lag in vaccinations. >> we sat back and assumed that somehow creating the vaccine was all we had to do. and that was simply inadequate. >> with signs the uk variant is spreading here. we'll look at that country's decision to delay second doses so more people can get vaccinated. dr. john brownstein joins us with his take on that strategy.
