see the biggest airport crowds of the pandemic this weekend. but the weather is doing these travelers no favors. right now it is wreaking havoc, a major storm across huge sections of the country bringing nose and ice and rain to millions of americans. parts of oklahoma and texas saw as much as ten inches of snow. across the middle of the country drivers have been struggling to stay on the road. we know overnight we saw several cars, even a tractor trailer overturned and other vehicles sliding into ditches. at airports, the weather has caused hundreds of flight delays and cancellations in the midwest. in the northeast, it's now in the storm's sights plus more severe weather on the way elsewhere. holiday flights were down numbers were down by more than 50% from 2019, but we're still expecting well over 2 million people to be screened at airports just this weekend alone.

for the latest on the track and the one coming on its heels let's go to meteorologist brittany bell from our station wtvd in raleigh, north carolina, she's filling in for rob this weekend. brittany, good morning. >> good morning to you, too. that storm system is just the beginning of a wet weekend. let's get right to it looking at radar. we just have widespread snowfall and ice falling across the northeast. farther to the south watching that cold front and rain is heavy. second round. an area of low pressure is going to swing to the north bringing heavy rainfall across the ca carolinas and georgia. and then that cold air sweeping in bringing ice and snow and heavy rainfall near washington, d.c. and richmond. eva. >> thank you. now to the sad new milestone in the pandemic. america surpassing more than 20 million confirmed cases of covid-19 with total deaths close to 348,000. california just had its deadliest day recording a record 585 deaths in 24 hours. abc's zohreen shah is at a field hospital in l.a. with the latest.

especially in a time of the pandemic. >> she made honesty her brand on a variety of issues. >> an incredible amount of powerful and good. >> the book is out on paperback on january 12th. let's switch gears and get a check of our weather. >> we're watching another series of storms that will bring wet weather to the pacific northwest. let's get right to it looking at the maps. that first area of low pressure bringing heavy rainfall and even snow to portions of the mountains. they can have winds gusting at high as 50 to 60 miles per hour, and in the second storm following behind it on monday and tuesday bringing more snow, additional heavy rainfall and then wednesday another right behind that near alaska, just bringing a third round of wet weather, heavy rainfall and potential for snow as well. we could also see significant rainfall totals. rainfall totals as high as four

year's resolutions, but if you think about it, the whole new year new you thing can be self loathing, and science suggests the best way to create healthy habits is not self shame but self compassion, and i spoke with experts about how to actually do it. >> new year's resolutions can be as fleeting as fireworks. one study found about 25% give up after two weeks, rather than shaming yourself into shape, this year science suggests self compassion is the resolution from which other healthy habits can flow. >> once we are nice to ourselves, we get a lot more done, too. people are more compassionate and eat healthier and exercise more. >> i spoke about expert tips about how to have a better relationship with yourself. tip number one, accept yourself as you are.

>> give yourself a break. how would it feel to accept yourself where you are at. this is the person you are and where you are at. >> tip number two, you don't have to love every part of your body but you can be grateful for it. >> what helps you move through the earth, it helps you do all the things you do. when you reflect on this you can unhook yourself from all the external pressure to be a certain way. >> tip number three, speak to yourself like a friend. >> somebody i met once, once told me that if somebody else said to him the types of things he said to himself he would punch that other person in the face, so how do we deal with this inner critic? >> it's like we have a mass self arm epidemic happening out there, but it's happening on the inside. change the way you talk to yourself. what i found is to talk to myself like a friend, we're good here, i'm not judging you, everything is fine. >> tip number four, use your past struggles to give you

strength now. >> there were many times i suffered emotional and physical abuse from family. there were moments where i was financially unable to provide for myself, for my children. if i could make it through that, through my own self courage and knowledge and the ability to ask for help then i can make it through anything. >> tip number five, medicate. all of these tips are skills you can train through medication. >> medication support you to see what you can truly be confident in right now in yourself, including all of your brilliance and all your difficulties. >> so interesting. you know, for so many of us we are used to shaming ourselves into things to get better, and it's an idea we are trying to get someplace else. do you think self compassion will lead to self complacency. i think that's the fear. >> don't trust me, but trust the science, the science says those motivated by self compassion and want better for themselves and

able to stick to their goals long term rather than being motivated by shame. it's hard to pick yourself back up if you are coming from a place of self loathing, but if you want better for yourself, you will stick to long-term goals, and the fear we have is we will slide into a sloppy resignation. sloppiness, resignation, that's not kind and it's a misunderstanding of what self compassion is and that holds you accountable without shame. >> sometimes it feels like shame gives you an edge, and you need to beat yourself up to get yourself up. >> you just described my psychology for most of my life, and working on that. and the app is offering a free 31 day challenge, and medication is like a way to train self compassion and we will have an

our 2021 ones to watch. giving you a sneak peek of what the new year will bring. yelp trend expert tara lewis is here to break down the major trends that yelp has found over the past year and forecast what is to come. tara, thanks for joining us. >> good morning. >> so 2020 has transformed so many different aspects of our lives, of course, but what are some trends on yelp reflecting that? >> yeah, well, first up we've got digital dining and restaurant technology. whether it was qr code menus or remote wait lists like yelp wait lists, restaurants have had to embrace new technologies in order to best serve their customers. we saw that on yelp over 160,000 restaurants have actually updated their business listings on a site to indicate they now are offering either contactless delivery, contactless payment or curbside pickup options, so any way you slice it, digital dining is here to stay in the new year. next yooer we're going to switch lanes a little bit and we're

going to talk about home transformations. we've seen that emerging trends that people are really excited to create bathroom sanctuaries and we've seen that bathroom tub reglazing is up 2,000%, and we've also noticed that there's a spike of -- a 413% spike for sauna installations. i'm sure that every parent can relate to the fact that sometimes the bathroom is the only place to have any privacy. and finally this is one of my favorites, gratitude. the rate of review for mentions of words of gratitude is increased by 32%, and the average rating, review rating among yelp users rose to 4.21 stars. >> i love that. we want to help out restaurants in our neighborhoods and stuff that have been struggling so much. yelp also found an increase in values-driven spending as well. tell us about that. >> that's right. people have been inspired to be much more intentional with how they're spending their money. we've seen searches for black owned businesses increase by

nutritionist maya feller is highlighting her favorites for the new year. maya, good morning. happy new year. >> good morning, dan. happy new year to you. >> so, first of all, it's apparently chickpeas' time to shine. i've been waiting on this one for a long time, these underappreciated chickpeas. >> absolutely. >> what's going on? i have a plate here of the chickpea dough or something like that? >> yes, so this is a pizza crust made from chickpeas, and this is from banza pizza, this a huge favorite in my house. it's an excellent source of fiber, plant-based protein, and i have to say it's unbelievable in terms of the taste. it is a fantastic alternative to a traditional pizza, so really chickpeas can do anything. >> i've always said that. next up, you say an oil change is in order in 2021. >> that's absolutely right. slide over, olive oil, because there are some new oils in town. walnut oil, sunflower seed oil. i always encourage my patients to vary their oils to reap the nutrient benefits.

love in slippers if you're staying at home? the first sunday in january is the busiest day of the entire year for dating. bumble says matches spike by 15% on that day last year and match says they expect about a 65% increase in new single people signing on tomorrow. oh, yeah. so no wonder some people call it the dating super bowl. joining us with dating tips you need to find love on the big day is dating coach bela gandhi, founder of the smart dating academy. always love when you're on. happy new year. how are you? >> i'm doing great. happy new year. >> let's start with people signing up for dating apps for the first time this year. it can be really overwhelming. how do you recommend getting started? >> there's never been a better time to date than now, covid has slowed things down, taken a lot of the players out of the market, so it is definitely time to dip your toe into this pool tomorrow. pick one to two sites or apps. that's it, and then you've got to have great photos. that's key.

six great photos. your first one should be a great opening head shot where you're looking right at the camera and smiling, and then you got to back it up with body shots. guys, because if you don't, people in today's day and age think you might have something to hide, and super important, your photos have to be no more than one year old. people want to date the person in the picture. >> hinge says that 81% of users believe they will find a match through apps this year. what are your three top tips for dating virtually? >> so, first, you've got to stage it right. have a great background. great lighting. get one of those ring lights that are all the rage on amazon right now. have a nice background, nothing distracting, and then second, look great. okay. even though you're at home and you might be couch surfing for a couple of days, shower, dress up like you would for a date. look good waist up. you can have the party on the bottom. i know we all know about that, but definitely zhuzh it up

and look great and then 30 minutes max. short and sweet for video dates. crazy can't keep crazy in the closet for longer than that. so 30 minutes is a great time. >> i love that. >> crazy can't keep crazy in the closet. i love that. and also ditch the athleisurewear. at least for the photo. according to hinge, as well, 53% of the app's community says they are ready for a serious relationship. what are some ways to take that relationship to the next level? >> so once you've had several good video dates, match shows that the number one date for this year during covid has been meeting up in a park, and why is that? there's a lot of studies that show when you're walking next to each other, side by side versus staring right into each other's eyes, you can actually have more meaningful intimate conversations. it's like chatting with somebody on a plane and telling them your entire life story. >> that's interesting. okay, so let's play a dating game, some true or false. we've got paddles here and can play along. you can put us to the test. the first question, by the third date you should really know where you want to take the

relationship. that sounds nuts. >> false. >> i'll say false. >> you guys are awesome daters. that's right. it is astounding to me as a dating coach how many people think that by the third date you need to know something. you barely spent three to four hours with this person. the third date is just the third date. it's not serious at that point. just look for red flags, look for green flags. >> i will say, though, on my first date with my wife, i kind of knew this was the person i many going to marry. i didn't say anything. >> so sweet. >> ah. >> such a cute pi pie, dan. >> her argument would be, it was all downhill from there. anyway, here's the second question, you should only communicate with one person at a time online, only see one person, see where it goes and then move on to the next person. i'm going to say false based on the roster theory. >> oh, stop. >> absolutely. it is false. right? you want to be talking to multiple people online. you're not exclusive with anybody. you want to have a dating bench,
