more people can get the shot? discussions are under way just as the christmas case surge hits hard, and dozens of employees at one bay area hospital are infected. and with that we say good evening and thank you for joining us, i'm dion lim. with frontline workers stretch thin, dozens are off the job hit hard by the pandemic. 43 of its staff in the san jose emergency department have been infected with covid-19. the positive tests came back between december 27th and january 1st. they're investigating whether an air-powered christmas costume, worn by a staff member on christmas day may have been to blame for the outbreak. kaiser says the emergency department is undergoing deep cleaning in addition to the cleaning that are regularly done. contact tracing is ongoing for people who may have been exposed. santa clara count reported 1800 new cases in the last 24 hours. all of that comes as california

has hit a new state record for the number of covid patients in the icu. with more than 4500 people admitted yesterday. here in the bay area, icu capacity has dropped to a record low, thousand just 5.1%. in southern california, funeral homes are turning away bereaved families, because they're running out of space. but there is a glimmer of hope. california's vaccination rate is on pace with the most states at more than 1,000 per every 100,000 people, according to cdc numbers. now keeping you informed on the covid surge and its impact on your health is one of the key pillars of abc 7's efforts to build a better bay area. with the holidays behind us, bay area doctors are now reporting the first coronavirus cases from christmas gatherings. as abc 7 news reporter luz pena found out, that's prompted one hospital to activate its surge

plan. >> reporter: the surge has spilled over into 2021 and now medical doctors are holding their breath to see a week after christmas what another surge could potentially look like. >> that's really why it's so frightening. we haven't seen christmas numbers yet, and we haven't seen new year's, for sure. >> reporter: an increase of cases of three holiday the all at once could mean extreme stress to the medical system. they are still waiting on more data. >> that's because a lot of people are closed for the holidays in terms of labs, so they're not reporting these numbers until people open back up next week. >> reporter: at san francisco general hospital, dr. caldwell says this week they've experienced the highest number of covid-19 cases in the last ten months, with 52 cases at the peak. >> so, it's a predictable pattern of two weeks to ten days of people getting sick. >> reporter: dr. caldwell noted

the first cases from christmas this week and implemented their surge plan. >> we opened up a new floor that was just for covid patients. it meant we are more limited in terms of elective procedures and surgeries are more limited. >> reporter: the chief of the er, dr. caldwell has another concern as a possible surge approaches. what's your message to your staff who at this point are still tired and there could be a potential surge. >> probably as much of my time now is trying to address that issue with all of our staff that have been doing this for ten months, honestly, we are, we're all exhausted. >> reporter: in san francisco, luz pena, abc 7 news. >> as the new coronavirus variant spreads in california, health officials are looking to the uk where it was first confirmed for a treatment plan. doctors there have decided to extend the time between doses to

vaccinate more people more quickly. american doctors are discussing the idea, but not everyone agrees. matt boone looked into the strategy. he joins us live now in the newsroom. certainly an interesting concept here. >> yeah, as we've been reporting, millions of vaccines have been allocated but are sitting unused. part of that could be related to staffing and logistics, but half those doses need to be saved in order to be given as a second dose in that three to four-week time frame. the question is, if we just use all those doses as first doses now, would it be worth it to help slow the spread? as the first phase of the vaccine rollout continues with health care workers and nursing homes that question was answered by dr. bob walkter. he writes, far better to have 100 million people 80% protected than 50 million people 95% protected.

in the uk, that theory has already been made into policy, especially as the country just approved the oxford astrazeneca vaccine which has a 73% efficacy. >> we want to get the vaccine to more people. >> the united states, that recommendation to lengthen the time between the doses has not been made. even as more cases of the new variant appear amid fears of another post-holiday surge. >> the problem with just vabting as many people as possible you might not ever get to that second dose in a reej time frame. >> reporter: deef jating from the prescribed regimen would be risky. with lower efficacy, more people who get the vaccine may still contract the disease, which he says could undermine trust. >> that's the most important issue, is really, having the

a soggy start to the first weekend of 2021 in the bay area. and pretty much, no matter where you were today it probably looked like this. right away, let's get our first look at weather with meteorologist drew tuma, and nor more rain on the way. >> i want to zoom in to where we find that drizzle. we'll go in a little tighter on live doppler seven, from novato valley, we're still tracking low-level moisture. that's having an effect on our visibility. fog has certainly developed. it's thick in spots. novato is down to less than two miles. in concord and livermore, two and a half-miles visibility. the fog is going to linger for the first part of our day tomorrow. we also have a high surf advisory in effect until 9:00 a.m. tomorrow for breakers up to 25 feet. this storm is on its way out and a stronger storm is about to arrive. we'll have those details in the

right now will be out of here before sun rise tomorrow morning. temperatures have been very gradual to fall underneath this cloud cover. the cloud cover kind of acts like a blanket, so we're not as cel chilly as we were this teime lat night. upper 40s in the north bay and inland east bay. overnight tonight, numbers will continue to just gradually fall into the 40s for the most part. the bigger issue we're tracking, that fog that is certainly dense in spots right now in the north bay and east bay. it will stay that way first thing in the morning. and, again, we'll keep drizzle in the forecast before the sun gets up here. during the daylight hours tomorrow, it's a dry day, but it's also a very cloudy day, not as bright asq we could possibly be. temperatures in the upper 50s to lower 60s, then we'll track more rain returning monday morning. monday morning will be a level two system we are tracking

because of pockets of heavy rain that will cause ponding on roadways and gusty winds in the morning hours. future weather, we'll stop the clock sunday evening, dry, a lot of cloud cover in place. then early monday morning the light rain arrives. 5:00 a.m. monday morning. then we'll see showers intensify, and by 10:00 a.m. monday you can see pockets of yellow and orange, showing you the downpours that are scattered in nature. we will track heavier rain moving through first thing in the morning. the windis will also pecick up. we expect gusts of 25-30 miles per hour. that could bring down tree branches and cause problems on area bridges. we'll see a pretty good soaking across the region. we'll track down importanpours

national defense authorization act includes a 3% pay raise for troops and a boost in hazard duty pay. it provides billions in upgrades to military systems and requires the renaming of military bases that honor confederate generals, one of the points the president opposed. friday's override comes just before the january 6 meeting to affirm the electoral college, generally considered a formality. mcconnell said the january 6 vote will be the most consequential vote of his life. but mcconnell urged senators to vote their conscience. senator josh hawley are joining 140 conservatives in the house in objecting to the state tallies. republican senator ben sasse warning that the president and his allies are playing with fire. meanwhile, the 117th congress will be sworn in on sunday. republicans will begin the session with a 51-seat majority in the senate. but control of the upper chamber is still undecided.

"mitch kills poor" and other expletives were written on his house in kentucky. the graffiti is presumably a reference to mcconnell locking against $2,000 stimulus checks. and this comes on the heels of what happened yesterday. somebody targeted nancy pelosi's san francisco home. graffiti included phrases like "we want everything", apparently referencing failed efforts to increase coronavirus relief checks. fake blood and a pig's head were found outside the door. a special investigation unit is trying to determine who did it. backers of a petition to recall governor gavin newsom held a signature drive today. they are more than halfway to the 1.5 million signatures needed to trigger a recall vote.
