building a better bay area for a safe and secure future. this is abc 7 news. no, this is not what doctors want to see. airports not as empty as health officials wish they would be. with that we say good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. doctors blame it for helping fuel a covid case spike. it seems people couldn't resist traveling for the holidays. today was the great return home as airports including here at sfo saw a big jump in passengers. abc 7 news reporter anser hassan is at san francisco international. anser, you saw some lines at the airport today. >> reporter: dion, good evening. things are quieted down quite a bit. earlier today these lines were full, despite the warning from lawmakers to stay home. sfo had one of the busiest weekends since the start of the

pandemic. emanuel perez arrived home to the bay area after visiting his kids in florida. >> i have two kids on the east coast. i have to see them. if i travel, they won't have to come over here. >> reporter: he says this is the first time he flew since the start of the pandemic. he admits he was worried. he had a full flight and faced large crowds at the airport. >> i knew what i was doing. unfortunately i had to do it, i couldn't keep going without seeing my family. two kids, it's not fair to them. >> reporter: he'll get a covid test tomorrow and quarantine for the next ten days. >> san francisco now requires a ten-day quarantine. >> reporter: travelers returning to santa clara county and san francisco must quarantine for ten days. the san francisco supervisor says it's one way to keep the new strain of the virus out of the city. >> there's not a lot of ways fob it to be enforced. we're saying this is the best practice, if you're coming into san francisco, stay home for ten

days. >> reporter: despite pleas from lawmakers to stay home, the tsa said on saturday it screened 1.2 million people, a record high since the pandemic began, and close to 2 million people will travel this holiday weekend. noah lund and his friends just got back from a beach vacation in mexico. >> i'm not necessarily too afraid for my sake. if i was older, maybe. but i'm young. we need to realize there's other problems other than just covid. >> reporter: it's important to note that these quarantine measures apply to everybody traveling into the bay area, not just those traveling by air. reporting live, anser hassan, abc 7 news. >> you really can't repeat that enough times, anser, many thanks to you. a little bit of encouraging news for the pandemic in california. the state broke its month-long streak of setting a record for people in icu. the number dropped by 22 to just over 4,500.

icu availability in the bay area climbed back up to 8.4%. but the number of new cases is well above average, more than 45,000 on saturday. the pandemic is causing massive wait times at santa clara public hospitals. the santa clara had you been health department says ambulances had to wait up to seven hours to get a patient into the emergency department. while they wait, emts are unable to respond to other emergencies. the fire department has served as backup several times now. 689 people were taken to the hospital on sunday. a covid-19 outbreak among kaiser permanente employees in san jose. the number of people infected is now atvestigating

staff member wearing a costume is to blame. the emergency department is undergoing a deep cleaning and contract trassi intracing under. hospitals still dealing with a post-thanksgiving covid surge are now preparing for a spike following christmas and new year's. >> reporter: more than 350,000 americans have lost their lives to covid-19. the country seeing more than 20 million cases of the virus. president trump taking to twitter this morning, falsely claiming the numbers from the cdc are exaggerated. >> the deaths are real deaths. >> reporter: dr. anthony fauci saying he did not anticipate the death toll in the u.s. would reach the level it has. >> it's something that we absolutely have got to grasp and get our arms around and turn that, turn that inflection down by very intensive adherence to the public health measures. >> reporter: health care workers are concerned. >> we haven't seen christmas

to georgia's secretary of state brad raffensperger. during the call the president can be heard repeatedly urging him to find votes to overturn the election. >> so look. all i want to do is this. i just want to find, uh, votes, which is one more than we have, because we won the state. >> the audio was obtained by "the washington post." the president asks raffensperger, who is also a republican, to recalculate the results. >> so -- so tell me, brad, what are we going to do? we won the election and it's not fair to take it away from us like this, and it's going to be very costly in many ways. >> raffensperger said several times that the president is wrong and that he stands by the results. today in washington, lawmakers narrowly reelected nancy pelosi as speaker of the house. the 216-209 win gives her

control because democrats have the majority. pelosi, who represents san francisco, has led her party in the house since 2003 and is the only woman to be speaker. that win comes with a difficult year ahead. president-elect joe biden is expected to produce legislation to tackle the pandemic and revive the economy. pelosi recently suggested that these would be her final two years as speaker. developing news now out of the north bay where a water rescue is under way. all of this happened at blind beach in sonoma county. that is just south of jenner and to the northwest of highway 1. a man was pulled out. but two children were still in the water. emergency responders had to do cpr on the man. we are still awaiting word on whether crews were able to reach the children. the rain may have moved out, but the fog certainly moved in. take a look at this, much of the bay area found itself under a gray blanket, especially this morning. san francisco was particularly shrouded in clouds.

you couldn't even see it from our sutro tower camera there. over at the beach, an eerie sight were there the fog seemed shroud the ocean. rain is on the way. nbc meteorologist drew tuma has more on the timing, and tomorrow will be soggy. >> yeah, dion, especially in the morning. more rain returns overnight tonight. live doppler 7 is showing you rain off the coast. the heaviest is going to fall tomorrow morning. fog is an issue, look at visibility, especially around the ocean, half moon bay, along the coast. visibility is down to zero, that's very thick fog overhead. storm impact scale, it's a level 2, moderate storm we are tracking. we'll go hour by hour and show you how much rain you can expect where you live in the accuweather forecast in a few minutes. >> all right, drew, thanks.

protesters are calling for vacaville police to fire the officer caught on video punching his k-9 partner. this video may be disturbing to watch. it shows the officer sitting on, then punching the police dog. vacaville police say the k-9 was not returning a toy and got aggressive which prompted the officer's response. the protest called on the department to take action on the officer. >> if one cop were beating up another cop, he should be fired. >> any other time, an officer would have been put on leave right away. >> the city says the investigation is still in progress. >> the city of vacaville is not making excuses, we're not justifying any behavior. but we are investigating the incident thoroughly to make sure whatever changes are necessary, that we're going to make those changes to make sure nothing like this happens again. >> vacaville police say the k-9 has been taken away from the officer but the officer is still working. to the east bay now, a

robbery suspect is in the hospital after being shot by berkeley police. police say last night they tried to arrest the 51-year-old man on ban cost way near fulton street. officers say he started coming towards them with a chain. he is in stable condition. the robbery then happened a few mro blocks way at a walgreens. people are having their accounts suspended as california's unemployment department cracks down on suspended fraud. the edd sent out a tweet this morning saying it's holding payments on claims it considers high risk. account holders are being notified and will need to verify their identity to have their accounts unfrozen. our 7 on your side team has been investigating the numerous problems that have plagued the edd during the pandemic. watch our coverage at abc7news.com/7onyourside. a pandemic program designed to help small businesses is making a comeback. local businesses in the east bay can get a financial boost.

the city of lafayette's business assistance program starts up again tomorrow. it ran for five months at the beginning of the pandemic. nearly 100 businesses and nonprofits each received more than $1,500 in federal assistance. the mayor will host a webinar this week to provide information about that new funding. if you can't tell just by looking behind me, a definite gray, foggy kind of day. drew tuma joins us once again with more on the rain, hi, drew. >> hi, dion. we're expecting another storm to

move in here while many of us are sleeping overnight. we'll wake up to not only rainy conditions but also strong wind gusts as well. live doppler 7 showing you, we are tracking rain offshore. i do want to zoom in a little bit closer where we'll likely find a few showers moving into the santa cruz mountains over the next several hours. however, most of us will not see any wet weather until around midnight tonight and the early morning hours on monday. temperatures today, not only the fog, but the cloud cover, really limiting how warm we got this afternoon. we're pretty much stuck in the low to mid-50s right now. and tonight we'll pretty much drop a few degrees. we'll end up on either side of about 50 degrees for overnight lows. so it is a mild night on the way with that cloud cover, that fog, and that rain moving back in. so on the storm impact scale, it is a level 2 moderate storm we have here, moving in tomorrow morning. we'll track showers and downpours, so pockets of heavier rain at times.

strong, gusty winds as well. and there is the chance, as this cold front moves through, that we could hear a clap of thunder. let's time it out for you. tonight, 7:00 p.m., it's just a cloudy night, mainly dry. and then shortly after midnight, you can see, by about 1:00 a.m. monday morning, there we have some light rain beginning to move through. it's close to sunrise tomorrow morning, we'll find those heavier pockets of showers, first in the north bay with those pops of yellow and orange, and then as that front begins to move south, we'll find those showers and downpours moving south as well. it's around this time later in the morning that we'll find those gusty winds as well. future tracker wind gusts by about 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning will likely find wind gusts about 22, perhaps even close to 40 miles per hour as that front moves through. total rainfall, rainfall estimates haven't changed all that much over the past 24 hours. still expecting about a quarter to three-quarters of anc of rain. there will be some spots where

we find those downpours set up for a little bit longer that will probably see close to an inch of rain. that will likely fall in the north bay and along the santa cruz mountains. highs monday, we're in the 50s with that wind and that rain. we're also tracking snow in the sierra. a winter storm warning begins at 4:00 a.m., 8 to 16 inches of snow, two feet in the highest peaks. morning rain and wind on your monday, that level 2 storm. we'll track evening showers on wednesday. more rain coming your way on friday. even, dion, next weekend looking unsettled with some scattered showers in the forecast. >> just keep the raincoat, keep the umbrella, don't put it away. >> yep. good idea. >> got it, drew, thanks. coming up now, we'll be getting to chris alvarez with a look at sports. >> the final weekend of the nfl season, playoff implications across the league. and the 49ers

finally now, guests at a nashville hotel were left in utter shock as two men base jumped from the top of the hotel. >> oh, my god. oh, my god! oh, my god. >> i think her reaction pretty much says it all. the two took a flying leap on new year's day from the rooftop bar at the grand hyatt hotel. they parachuted into a parking lot and got into a parked car and drove away. security says the men were guests at the hotel, were evicted, and effectively banned. almost like an action thriller movie. that's it for abc 7 news at
