return home as airports including here at sfo saw a big jump in passengers. abc7 news reporter is at san francisco international where you saw some pretty long lines at the airport. >> that's right. things will slow down a bit. there aren't as many passengers as this morning. earlier today the security lines were fulfill despite the warnings from lawmakers to stay home, san francisco international airport had one of the busiest weekends since the start of the pandemic. emanuel went over after visiting his kids. >> my two kids on the west coast. i got to see them. >> reporter: like many, perez says this is the first time he flew since the start of the pandemic. the first time he was able to see his kids. he admits he was worried. he had a full flight and faced large crowds at the airports. >> what i was doing, i had to do it. i couldn't go any longer without seeing my family.

that's the down side. two kids. it's not fair to them. >> reporter: he will get a covid test tomorrow and quarantine the next ten days. travelers returning to santa clara county and san francisco must quarantine for ten days. san francisco supervisor matt haney says it is one way to keep the new strain of the virus out of the city. >> there aren't a lot of ways for it to be enforced. what we're saying, this is best practice. if you're coming into san francisco, stay home for ten days. >> reporter: despite pleas from lawmakers to stay home, the tsa says on saturday it screen nearly 1.2 million people. the record high since the pandemic began. close to 2 million people will travel this holiday weekend. noah and his friends just got back from a beach vacation in mexico. >> i'm not necessarily too afraid for my sake. if i was older maybe. but i'm young. i need to realize there are other problems other than just

covid. >> reporter: it is important to know these quarantine restrictions apply to everyone traveling into the bay area. not just those traveling by air. abc7 news. >> we appreciate that report. thank you. there is a little bit of encouraging pandemic news for california tonight. the state broke its month-long streak of setting a record for people in the ic umpbl. that number dropped by 22 to just over 4,500. icu availability in the bay area climbed back up to over 8% after two days of record lows. but the number of newly diagnosed cases remains well above california's daily average. the count for saturday is more than 4,500. the pandemic is causing some massive wait times at some santa clara county hospitals. the santa clara public health department says ambulances have waited up to seven hours to get a patient into the emergency department. while ambulances wait, emts are unable to respond to other emergencies. the fire department has served

as a back-up six times now. on saturday, 689 people in the county were taken to the hospital. and new details on the covid-19 outbreak among kaiser permanente employees at its san jose emergency department. the number of people infected increased by one today to 44. kiser is now investigating whether an air powered christmas costume worn by a staff member on christmas day may be to blame for the break. they said the staff member was not showing any symptoms. the emergency department is undergoing a deep cleaning and contact tracing is underway. hospitals still dealing with a post thanksgiving surge are now preparing for a spike following christmas and new years. kenneth has national numbers and the response to the president's assertion that they're inflated. >> more than 350,000 americans have lost their lives to covid-19. the country seen more than 20 million cases of the virus. president trump taking to twitter this morning, falsely

claiming the numbers from the cdc are exaggerated. >> deaths are real deaths. >> reporter: dr. fauci saying he did not anticipate the death toll in the u.s. would reach the level it has. >> it is something that we absolutely got to grasp and get our arms around and turn that inflection down by very intensive adherence to the public health measures. >> reporter: overburdened health care systems still dealing with the surge are determined. >> we haven't seen the christmas numbers yet and we haven't seen new years for sure. >> reporter: four states, california, texas and new york all hitting 1 million covid cases. the rollout of the vaccines has faced challenges. nationwide, only about for you.2 million americans have been vaccinated falling short of the trump administration's goal of 20 million by the end of 2020. >> public health care systems already taxed are now twaxd distributing this vaccine. >> reporter: in texas, houston opening the first public vaccine event on saturday. >> i just want to get back to

recalculate the results. >> so tell me, brad, what are we going to do? we won the election and it's not fair to take it away from us like this. and it will be very costly in many ways. >> ratherburger said several times the president is wrong and he stands by the results. today in washington lawmakers narrowly reelected nancy pelosi as speaker of the house. a 216-209 win gives her control of the democrats' slim majority. pelosi who represents san francisco has led her party in the house since 2003 and is the only woman to be speaker. the win comes with a difficult year ahead. president-elect joe biden is expected to produce legislation to tackle the pandemic and revive the economy. pelosi recently suggested that these would be her final two years as speaker. developing news coming out of north bay where a man is dead and his two children may have been swept out to sea.

it happened about 2:00 p.m. at blind beach in sonoma county just south of jenner. video coming into the newsroom moments ago. the sheriff's office says a man tried to rescue the kids, ages 4 and 6 and reached one of them but then got into trouble and drowned. a friend and his wife did drag his body out of the water. a sonoma county sheriff's office says the two children are presumed dead. the rain may have moved out but take a look. the fog definitely moved in. much of the bay area found itself under a gray blanket. especially this morning. san francisco was in particularly shrouded by clouds, should i say. you couldn't even see it from our sutro tower camera. at the beach, the fog just seemed to follow up the ocean. in addition to the fog, rain is on the way. meteorologist drew tuma joins us now with more on the timing. hi, drew. >> hi. we're expecting some heavier

protesters are calling for vacaville police to fire the officer caught on video, punching his canine partner. a warning, this video may be disturbing to watch. video shows the officer sitting on and then punching the police dog. vacaville police say the canine wasn't returning a toy and got aggressive which prompted the officer's violent response. protesters called on the department to take action against that officer. >> one cop is beating up another cop should be fired. >> any other time an officer would have been put on leave right away. >> the city says the investigation is still in progress. >> the city of vacaville is not making any excuses. we're not justifying any behavior. but we are investigating the incident thoroughly to make sure that whatever changes are necessary, that we'll make those changes to make sure nothing like this happens again. >> the vacaville police say the

canine has been taken away from the officer but the officer is still working. due to east bay where a robbery suspect is in the hospital after being shot by berkeley police. last night they tried to arrest the 51-year-old man on bancroft way near fulton street. officers say he started coming toward them with a chain. necessary stable condition. the robbery happened a few blocks away at a people are having their accounts suspended as california's unemployment department cracks down on suspected fraud. the edd sent out a tweet this morning saying it is halting payments on claims it considers high risk. account holders are being notified and will need to verify their identity to have their accounts unfrozen. our 7 on your side team has been investigating the numerous problems that have plagued the edd during the pandemic. you can watch our continuing coverage at abc 7. news.com/7 on your side. a pandemic program designed to help small businesses is

to the east bay now, the city of lafayette's business assist program ran for five months at the beginning of the pandemic. nearly 100 businesses and nonprofits each received more than $1,500 in federal assistance. the mayor of lafayette will host a webinar this week to provide information about the new funding. final new episodes of jeopardy hosted by alex trebek will air this following week. monday's episode contain as powerful message about the season of giving from trebek. the last else airs friday and will include a special tribute. six of the week's contestants are from the bay area. you can watch it at 7:00 right here on abc7.

it might be a good week to stay inside, watch jeopardy and do whatever you're doing inside. it will be raining a lot. drew? >> especially overnight tonight. pretty decent sleeping weather. we'll have some heavier showers moving in right around sunrise monday morning with the level two moderate storm we are tracking. so live doppler 7, we're tracking some showers off our coast. i do want to press in to the south. you can see some light showers beginning to move into santa cruz right now. but for most of us, any rain is really going to hold off until after midnight tonight. now a lot of fog today. a lot of cloud cover. temperatures really struggled to even get into the 50s. that's where we sit right now. the low to mid 50s at this hour and really tonight, temperatures may fall a couple of degrees. we're pretty much going to end up on either side of about 50 degrees, thanks to that cloud cover and the rain returning. so on the storm impact scale, a level two moderate storm

tomorrow morning. we'll track showers, down pours as well. some gusty winds, too, especially for the first half of our day. and there is chance for a clap of thunder as this cold front moves through. so let's go hour by hour. future weather early tomorrow morning. we're just beginning to see light showers moving into the bay area. and right around sunrise, that's when we expect some pockets of heavier rain to develop. you see the pops of yellow and orange on the screen. throws the down pours we'll track likely first into north bay and then move their way south throughout the morning. by 11:30, you can see, we'll track that wet weather around the entire bay area. it is really in the morning hours that we'll find some pretty strong winds. so future tracker wind gusts will stop the clock at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. you can see the winds racing out of the southwest. gusting anywhere from 20 to as high as 40 miles per hour tomorrow morning. so it is really a wet and windy

start to the day. so arrivrainfall estimates, we' anticipating the bulk of the bay area to get a quarter to three quarters of an inch of rain. there will be higher amounts depending order when down pours set up. but i think the best bet of finding the heaviest rain will be in the north bay and the santa cruz mountains. so highs tomorrow, that rain and the wind will barely stay in the mid to upper 50s. we're also tracking snow. working into the sierras. we have a winter storm warning. eight to 16 inches of snow, above 5,500 feet. our highest peaks. we could see two feet of fresh powder. here's the accuweather forecast. tomorrow it is about the rain and wind in the morning. we'll track more showers wednesday evening. another storm moves in here on friday. and some more wet weather coming our way next weekend. after more than a month away from home, the 49ers finish the regular season with one final

l.a. will play and the cards are eliminated. green bay at chicago. the packers win. they clinch the top seed. the bears scored first. but in the second, it was all rodgers. he threw one touchdown to tie it up and then finds marquez wide open. 14-10, green bay. this touchdown pass to dominique dafney, sets the single season market 46. 21 straight points for the packers. and then later in the fourth, rodgers finds palo alto's alto' they have the bye in the playoffs. with the cardinals' loss, chicago are play at new orleans. how about jon gruden and the raiders trying to avoid a 14-game lose go streak. game tied. denver way back in the end. drew lock finds jerry judy and an absolute disaster. the longest pass play in the nfl all season right there. 92 yards, 31-24 denver. 30 seconds to go. fourth and goal.
