the senate. >> abc's elizabeth schulze begins our coverage from washington. elizabeth, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, mona. another phone call from president trump is raising legal questions. this time in an audio first obtained by "the washington post," he's heard demanding action to overturn the election. this morning president trump on a recorded call is heard urging election officials in georgia to reverse his election loss to joe biden. >> look, all i want to do is this -- i just want to find 11,780 votes. >> reporter: during the call saturday trump was pushing brad raffensperger to recalculate the vote. >> there's nothing wrong with saying that, you know, that you've recalculated. >> mr. president, the challenge that you have is the data you have is wrong. >> reporter: the president launching into a barrage of conspiracy theories, providing no evidence to support his

claims. >> do you think it's possible that they shredded ballots in fulton county? that's what the rumor is. also that dominion took out machines, that dominion is moving fast to get rid of their machinery. do you know anything about that? that's illegal. >> reporter: general counsel for the secretary of state's office chimed in. >> no. dominion haven't moved any machinery. >> have they moved the inner parts of the machines and replaced them with other parts? >> no. >> reporter: the call raises questions about whether trump violated election laws. >> there's no question that this is morally problematic that the president of the united states sounds like he's pressuring a state secretary of state to help him win the election. i don't think you'll see any criminal charges here in connection with what has

happened. there's certainly an argument that the president has walked right up to the line. >> i think a tremendous abuse of power. i think if there were more days left in the term another round of impeachment based on this obstruction. >> reporter: vice president elect kamala harris says the call was an abuse of power. >> it was a bold face abuse of power by the president of the united states. >> reporter: trump and his allies have lost more than 50 legal cases trying to prove voter fraud. still 140 house republicans and at least one dozen senators say they'll object to certifying joe biden's win during a joint session of congress wednesday. their objections will amount to nothing more than political theater without a majority vote in the house and senate. >> we ought to have a fair inquiry, a fair audit into the results and we ought to resolve these claims.

cutting doses in half. meanwhile hospitals are preparing for conditions to get worse. this morning doctors are bracing for an onslaught of new covid cases. >> we're averaging 2 to 3,000 deaths per day. when an event occurs like the holiday, you have a couple week lag before you see an additional uptick of cases which is always followed by hospitalizations and deaths. >> reporter: despite warnings to stay home airlines have seen more than 14 million passengers in the past two weeks, even as the u.s. death toll surges higher. >> it's like treading water from 100 feet below the surface. you're already drowning, but you have to keep trying because that's what you do. >> reporter: covid hospitalizations topping 100,000 for more than a month. california seeing the worst of it. >> what's happening in los angeles can and will be coming to many communities across america. >> reporter: in l.a. the army corp. of engineers helping hospitals running low on oxygen. overwhelmed funeral homes turning away families.

in the bay area 43 staffers at this san jose hospital now testing positive. the outbreak being linked to a worker who wore an inflatable christmas costume. the county is banning employee break rooms for all businesses. across the country near boston a second emergency field hospital is opening today. >> this is going to be an exclusively covid positive place. >> reporter: meanwhile, a new vaccine is bringing hope, the first doses of oxford's vaccine are being distributed in the uk. back here in the u.s. the rollout of the pfizer and moderna vaccines are coming out at a slow pace. >> there have been a couple glitches. that's understandable. >> reporter: some of the first public vaccination events were held this weekend in houston where 250,000 people called the health department for only 750 appointments. >> i just want to get back to normal. i want to see my kids. >> reporter: "operation warp speed" is now considering drastic measures.

down. >> two other people were injured during the shooting. a major reversal from the pentagon. the aircraft carrier "nimitz" will remain in the middle east. the decision comes days after the acting defense secretary ordered the ship returned to the u.s. to deescalate tensions with iran. he's citing iranian threats against president trump for keeping the ship in the region. time for a look at your monday morning weather. expect a day of rain and mountain snow along the west coast. what's left of a weekend storm that moved through the northeast is making roads slippery in parts of new england this morning. expe expect lingering snow and showers in pennsylvania and west virginia. major cities of the northeast will be drying out. 44 in new york. 35 in boston. snow will be melting in the midwest with temperatures up to 15 degrees above normal.

vincent has died. she hosted "save my bakery." she was fighting an unspecified illness. she was 75. we turn to the woman who falsely accused a black teenage or of stealing her phone. we're learning more about her past. some critics demand she be arrested. megan tevrizian has more. >> this is my phone. >> reporter: this morning the woman behind this video identified as 22-year-old miya ponsetto. >> that's mine. >> are you kidding me? you feel like there's only one iphone made in the world? >> reporter: last month she wrongly accused keyon harrold jr. of stealing her phone at a manhattan hotel where he and his family were staying. the video seen more than 3 million times was shot by keyon harrold's father. miya ponsetto is seen wrestling with the teen. her phone was later found and returned by an uber driver. >> i mean, i don't know what would have happened if my dad

wasn't there. >> reporter: the incident sparking outrage leaving harrold and his family asking why. >> the toughest answer a parent has to give her child, son, unfortunately it might be because you're black. >> reporter: they wait to see if charges will be filed against ponsetto. new details emerging about her past. in february she was charged with public intoxication at a beverly hills hotel. in may she was arrested again charged with a dui. her sentence included probation, community service and nine months of alcohol counseling. keyon harrold's family saying the incident has further societal repercussions. today ponsetto has not apologized apologized. new york city's mayor called the incident racism pure and simple.

this is likely the results of not only the increased traveling, but also the fact that it's winter and people are gathering indoors. >> hospitals around the country have been overwhelmed with the spike in covid cases. with another surge expected, how can hospital handle the steady stream of patients in need of care? are you concerned about medical supply short annuals for example? >> we're already hearing reports that hospitals are coming up with protocols for how to ration care. it's scary to think about with another surge we could be on the brink -- i hate to say this -- a health care collapse in certain parents of the country. i shudder to think of the scenario where you have a 90-year-old and 45-year-old come through the emergency department with the same symptom and the hospital has to decide who gets the icu bed or ventilator. >> some doctors say to speed up the vaccine rollout we should give out single doses of the vaccine and delay the second shot. what are your thoughts? >> this is basically a band-aid to a much larger issue related to vaccine distribution and
