according to the governor of one doctor says speeding it up is going to be very difficult. >> google employees say retaliation is one of the reasons they unionized. resilience in action. we'll tell you about the businesses bravely opening up in this pandemic. >> and i'm tracking more rain on the way this week. abc 7 news at 11:00 starts right now. building a better bay area for a safe and secure future. this is abc 7 news. under pressure to get more people vaccinated, flaplans are being floated to speed up the rollout, including half doses and fining hospitals for delays. >> governor newsom says the speed at which people are being vaccinated in southern california isn't good enough. the state is expanding its options, but do some of the options go too far? >> when is it going to be

distributed to the public? you know, we're in january already. >> nelda wellton is referring to the vaccine and the rollout that some are calling very slow. nine of nelda's family members have died from covid-19 complications in texas she dealt with the virus personally in richmond, california. >> i haven't seen my family from texas. it's really bad. especially when i lost loved ones that i couldn't even go to say good-bye to them. so, yeah. it's been very hard. >> governor newsom says the peace pace of vaccinations is not good enough. doctors say it's going to be tough to expedite this process. >> i think we can speed it up maybe by a little bit, but the vast amount of speeding up, i think it's tough to do, because you can't change the system overnight. >> nationally, there is talk of doing half doses, but that has

not yet been approved. new york governor cuomo has threatened hospitals there to speed things up or they'll face fines and lose out on vaccine shipments. doctors we talked with say that is dangerous. nelda says she's just hopeful for everyone to have a shot at getting the vaccine soon. >> i pray for everyone, not just my family, that this goes away. cause this is no joke. i'm an experienced. i got it, and it was the worst six weeks of my life. >> jr stone, abc 7 news. >> we have a calculator on abc7news.com if you want to know when it might be your time to b vaccinated of. a quick look at the icu bed availability. the bay area's dipped back below 8% today. northern california is at 30. the san joaquin and southern california, still those areas remain at zero.

a reminder, the state threshold is 15%. below that, you trigger a lockdown. governor newsom says we seeing a temporary lull in the pandemic. while more people stayed home over the new year holiday he believes holiday gatherings are about to fuel a surge of new cases. >> this is a deadly disease. this is a deadly pandemic. >> the governor saying this week will be critical in finding out where we in this pandemic. the growth rate of new cases has slowed. the seven-day average for the state is nearly 38,000. there were just 26,900 >> we are entering into what we anticipate the surge on top of a surge. it's going to put a lot of pressure on hospitals and icus coming out of the holidays. >> that surge will likely begin in the next few days or weeks. on top of that, the new strain of coronavirus. there are six confirmed cases in the state, all in southern

california. despite the disappointing rollout of the vaccine, he says a plan is under way to use dentists, pharmacies and even the national guard to give shots. >> i hear that from folks calling me directly, people that are expressing themselves very forthrightly and understandably around their anxiety of when do i get these doses. >> this friday we'll learn whether the stay-at-home order will be extended for the bay area. san francisco officials announced last week that the city will keep the order in place indefinitely. we've didn't stories of businesses struggling. we spoke to owners who hope they can inspire others. >> we haven't been able to use it. we'll finally get to use it. >> reporter: grand opening, isn't the kind of sign you see a lot these days, but by next

week, jamie whitmire is planning to fly the banner loud and proud. >> it's to get the word out that we're here, and we are open. >> reporter: opening a business is a rare move in the time of pandemic, but a move that some have braved despite the odds, including regina skinner, who took over blossoms and botanicals in san mateo? june. >> basically, it's one foot in front of the other, one day in front of the next day. >> reporter: or one canoli at a time in the case of whitmire's coffee/catering business. both women have learned to pivot quickly. >> to-go orders is where the business is at. >> now we're mostly doing deliveries only, just birthdays and anniversaries. >> reporter: both women say another reason they keep going, to inspire others not to give up. >> i feel like this grand opening is going to give me that opportunity to let people know i'm fighting. i'm in this to win it.

>> your number one lesson of opening a business during a pandemic? >> pushing through doubt. and pushing through fear and being open minded and flexible. >> reporter: in san jose, chris reyes for abc 7 news. well, the deadline for small businesses in california to apply for $500 million in grant funding has been extended. it launched in december, but due to the high traffic online, some businesses may have had trouble accessing the application. now the deadline has been pushed until january 13th. despite the extension, funds will be disbursed as originally planned. one thing that has not happened is a surge in flu cases. leading up to it, we routinely heard about concerns that a twindemic was coming. for some reason, the flu cases are not spreading while the

coronavirus is. doctors just aren't seeing it. >> we are testing still thousands of people in our emergency room settings and in our hospitals for a combination of covid and flu tests, and we're essentially seeing no flu. some weeks we'll have no cases, other weeks we'll have maybe one or two cases. >> it is not clear if all the precautions being taken because of covid are slowing down the flu, but it could be the case. experts say no matter what people are doing, just keep your guard up. let's move on now to other news tonight. in the north bay, the search continues for two children swept to sea when a sneaker wave rolled up on them. this happened at blind beach near jenner, west of santa rosa. despite a search until dark yesterday, rescue crews could not locate the 4-year-old boy and his 7-year-old sister. their father appears to have died while trying to save them. >> so tragic.

san francisco prosecutors filed vehicular manslaughters charges against a parolee in a hit and run. troy mcallister, police say, was intoxicated and driving a stolen car when he was haved involved crash that killed two weomen on mission street. dion lim pressed about why they didn't do anything after the paroll offip parole office. >> this isn't about blaming parole. this is about numerous law enforcement agencies, and we all have to depend on each other to do the job properly. >> this afternoon he sent a statement saying in part, daley city police, san francisco

effect until 4:00 a.m. in the morning. we will likely find two feet in the highest peaks. back here at home, rainfall totals, more than an inch of rain in someone area. the east bay got good downpours. castro valley and fremont, two thirds to a third of an inch of rain. redwood city shy of a quarter of an inch of rain. a high surf advisory still in effect. this will last until 11:00 p.m. tomorrow night where current wave heights are anywhere from 11 to 15 feet high and breakers could be as high as 30 feet with dangerous sneaker waves. we're starting to cool off into the upper 40s if not 30s in the coldest spots. tonight is a much colder night compared to last night. last night we stayed in the upp upper 40s and low 50s. around the bay shoreline we'll

stay in the 40s. the big picture, high pressure briefly it in control. that will bring back the sunshine. it's a dry day tomorrow. temperatures in the upper 50s to near 60 degrees, but by wednesday, our next storm system will approach northern california. we'll turn cloudy again in the morning on wednesday, and then we'll track some scattered showers. tomorrow, though, enjoy the sunshine. mostly sunny in the afternoon. 57 in the city, 58 in city, 58 n and san jose. the storm impact scale, a level one light system we are tracking with light showers. the best chance of rainfall will likely fall in the north bay. and we're talking really low amounts. less than a quarter of an inch of rainfall. watch what happens as the storm moves south. it really falls apart. we'll find pretty low totals in the south bay. mostly sunny tomorrow, light showers on wednesday. we'll track another storm moving
