from the riots at the u.s. capitol. a police officer now among the five people dead in the violence. the fbi launching an intense search for the mob that broke through police lines. we'll show you the new photos. >> he's a threat to the security of this country. calls right now to remove the president. a local constitutional expert talking about what we might actually expect to see next. also this morning, mega millions living up to its name with a mega jackpot on the line in tonight's drawing. good morning, everybody. how happy am i to say it's friday. yes. january 8th. >> and the roads are a bit wet this morning. be careful out there. mike, what does the forecast look like. >> yeah. it is wet. especially north of the san mateo bridge. we're going to have another round of light showers. we talked about two initial lines. the first one steady and heavier. that one moved through. now we have scattered light

showers through the morning commute and mainly across the north bay. some of them will try to leak south. for the most part it's, yeah, not very impressive on live doppler 7. you can see around highway 4, 80 in contra costa county, even 24 and up in the north bay some scattered light rain. as you can see the initial line move through earlier and fell apart, now we have that secondary line to come through. once it passes, look at this. we'll have increasing sunshine. temperatures close to average. mid 50s at noon. 55 across the board. 55 to 57 at 4:00. a cooler evening, 49 to 52. now, where it has rained, which is mainly north of san mateo bridge, it will be wet and slippery for our earliest commuters. we'll talk to jobina in a minute about the traffic. back to reggie right now and let's start the news. developing news, we learned a police officer has now died following the violent attack at the u.s. capitol. he was hurt during confrontations with the rioters.

this as president trump finally appears to be recognizing his election loss. of course calls are growing for him to step down immediately for inciting violence. faith abubey is live in washington with that. faith? >> good morning. as the fallout continues, multiple sources are telling abc news both democrats and republicans are discussing ways to get the president out of office. >> usa! >> reporter: this morning, outrage as more details come to light about the deadly attack on the u.s. capitol. investigators finding five guns including a military style assault rifle, two pipe domes and 11 molotov cocktails. more than police officers hurt during the clashes with the violent pro-trump mob. thursday evening 42-year-old officer brian sicknick succumbing to injuries sustained in the battle. that making five deaths now linked to the insurrection on american's symbol of democracy.

>> to those who engaged in the acts of violence and destruction, you do not represent our country. and to those who broke the law, you will pay. >> reporter: in a new video president trump condemning the same angry move he riled up with repeated false claims about a stolen election. >> we'll walk down to the capitol! you'll never take back our country with weakness. >> by inciting sedition as he did yesterday, he must be removed from office. while it's only 13 days left, any day can be a horror show. >> reporter: democrats calling for impeachment while also looking to vice president mike pence to invoke the 25th amendment. abc sources say republicans are also privately discussing the option. but thursday the president finally accepting his election loss. >> my focus now turns to ensuring a smooth, orderly and seamless transition of power. >> reporter: and now with just

12 days until president-elect joe biden's inauguration, a seven-foot fence going up around the capitol and questions about police conduct. videos appearing to show some officers moving barricades for demonstrators. officers have arrested more than 80 people so far. in the meantime, the capitol hill police chief resigning because of that botched response to the violence. in washington, faith abubey, abc7 news. >> thank you. this morning the fbi is looking to identify the violent rioters from wednesday's rampage at the capitol. they are also looking for a suspect who planted pipebombs that morning. jobina is at the live desk with the latest on this. >> as you stated, the fbi is looking for someone who planted pipebombs at the capitol on wednesday. officials say this man on your screen planted active explosive devices outside the republican

and democratic national committee. abc news received this photo of a bomb. at the same time the fbi is also looking to identify the violent rioters from wednesday's attack. these are just some of the hundreds of trump supporters that could face sedition, insurrection and rioting charges. the acting u.s. attorney says no suspects will be ruled out including the capitol police and the president himself. several trump administration officials are stepping down in the final days of his presidency. most notably secretary of education, betsy devos and transportation secretary, elaine chao. seven others in the administration announced their resignation after wednesday's violence. will president trump actually be impeached or removed under the 25th amendment? abc7 news reporter jr stone talked with a bay area constitutional expert to find out what comes next.

>> he needs to be removed as quickly as possible. >> he is a threat to the security of this country. >> demand trump's immediate resignation. >> reporter: after this scene in washington, d.c. on wednesday, democratic lawmakers are pushing hard for president trump to be removed from office by either the 25th amendment or another impeachment. sources say that vice president pence is highly unlikely to pursue removal of the president using the 25th. impeachment would be the next option. >> i don't think that it will be possible to actually complete an impeachment trial in the time that we have left. it is possible to impeach the president even after he leaves office. >> reporter: and if that was successful, experts say president trump would be unable to run for office in years to come. some believe the president could resign and then the vice president could pardon him, but u.c. hastings professor joel paul believes that would damage pence's legacy. as for a self-pardon, paul doesn't believe it would hold up in court and argues there would

be a major downside. >> it is inconceivable to me that there is a judge in this country who would give effect to that pardon. so one of the drawbacks to that is he would have to list specificity any crimes that he may have committed. >> reporter: something that paul and others believe would open president trump up to state prosecution, something that a federal pardon would not protect against. j.r. stone, abc7 news. the bay area stay-at-home order will likely be extended beyond today. icu capacity has dropped to the lowest availability at 3.5% in the bay area. in the san joaquin valley and southern california regions they have zero percent still. that doesn't mean there's no beds but hospitals have activated their surge plans. community-based clinics are

preparing to start large-scale immunizations as soon as vaccines are available. this morning we're looking at the challenges that might lie ahead especially for our vulnerable communities. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live with how one large clinic operation is hoping to address these concerns. >> hi, zukumasi. overall progress has been slow, many are finding that it's taking some convincing to get people to take the vaccine. that people are hesitant. in the south bay, they are working on a pro-vaccine campaign. they are finding there are even front line health care workers who are hesitant to take it. at the gardener health services clinic they say 30% of their workers don't want the vaccine. the ones who did decide to get the shot did it while cameras were rolling to try and convince colleagues to join them.

>> we're willing to take it. we're going to be vaccinated. they should seriously consider being vaccinated as well because it will benefit the community at large. >> governor newsom is going to allocate some of his vaccine budget to outreach and education. there is also the hope that time will help. as people see those who got the vaccine coming out of it okay and not dealing with side effects, the hope is that they will decide it is okay for them to go ahead and get it, too. live in walnut creek. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. governor newsom is set to unveil his state budget proposal for the 2021/2022 fiscal year. it's expected to include $600 stimulus payments for low-income residents affected by the covid-19 pandemic. residents with $30,000 or less are eligible. governor newsom wants to extend

the moratorium on evictions during the pandemic. the governor's livestream event will be held at 11:00 a.m. all right. let's talk about some neighborhood temperatures while you grab that umbrella and grab a coat that will keep you warm with low to mid 40s throughout our inland and east bay neighborhoods. tule fog sneaking through contra costa county and the delta. we'll see if that moves further to the west during the morning commute. it's unlikely with showers coming in that it will. temperatures are running in the mid 40s to low 50s. very mild outside. my biggest concern especially with our early commuters is hydroplaning because there are wet spots on the roads, especially north of the san mateo bridge and 580 running through the east bay. here's some of the rain that's still falling. very light out there up in the north bay valleys, this is moving west to east, maybe northwest to southeast a little

bit. it will move over towards napa. 29 will get wet, possibly 80 in solano county. notice on future radar, by 9:00, most of the showers are gone. you can see the white dissipating heading from noon into the 5:00 hour. you'll need the sunglasses this afternoon. a cooler night is on the way due to the lack of clouds and colder weather behind this front. a couple hundredths of an inch of rain is possible out of these showers over the next three to four hours. that's it. i have near record highs coming up in the accuweather 7-day forecast. let's get over to jobina and find out about that friday morning. it is friday, right? hi, jobina. >> i know, right? we made it, mike. finally. thank you. good morning, everybody. happy friday to you. the good news is though we do have wet spots out there, i'm not tracking any spinouts at the moment, anything like that that is causing a slowdown or some crashes. we had some minor ones but they cleared. showing you the bay bridge toll plaza. we have not seen metering lights

san francisco police are trying to find the person who vandalized a historic symbol in japantown. these are the surveillance images. they show a person hacking these two cherry blossom trees in front of the japanese cultural and community center on sutter street. the center's executive director said the person cut off all the branches. because of the damage it means cherry blossoms will not be blooming from the trees this year. >> to be greeted with two cherry trees that we have been cherishing and honoring for so long destroyed just really saddened us to start the new year like this. >> you can see someone placed oragami ornaments on the vandalized trees in a way to beautify them. the trees were planted in 1994 when the emperor and empress of

japan visited san francisco. we continue to track more than 2 million covid vaccine doses shipped to california over the past month. here's the frustrating part, only about a quarter of them have actually been used. the i-team is digging into a possible solution. roughly 30,000 california nursing students are qualified and ready to administer the vaccines. the problem? the county health departments have not given the green light. >> reporter: disrupting the vaccine distribution chain. more than 1.5 million doses of covid-19 vaccine are now stuck in transit, that's up from 900,000. so what'causing it? we asked the state four times this week, but have yet to get a straight answer. just like janice, the interim director for college of san mateo nursing program. >> there's no direct line of communication. >> reporter: she contacted the

san mateo county health department five times since october about a possible solution to help aid the backlog. she has 100 trained nursing students that are certified to administer vaccines and need to complete clinical hours. >> so i have 100 students, and, by the way, all last semester, we're practicing with the flu vaccine, can totally help with this. >> reporter: her students are required to complete 100 hours per semester. that totals out to an additional 10,000 injections that could alleviate the backlog in san mateo county. but -- >> i just don't hear back. >> reporter: she isn't alone. nursing directors at community colleges in marin, sonoma, san mateo, santa clara, and alameda counties have made attempts to do the same. >> what's sad and what's happening is there is a huge disconnect. >> reporter: dr. sharon ann goldfarb is the president of the associate degree nursing programs. she oversees 30,000 nursing

yep. slowly, slowly trying to shake off what was such a rough year. you can't flip the switch on that one. you can see around the richmond-san rafael bridge, golden gate bridge, bay bridge, there's scattered light showers, also around the benicia bridge and the san mateo bridge. it could be slippery in some areas this morning due to rain last night. most of the measurable rain as far south as san francisco, oakland and-week and nor walnut north of that, we had a little bit of rain. scattered light showers best across the north bay this morning. dangerous surf will build and hang around through 6:00 tomorrow morning. be careful at the beaches. morning showers and partly cloudy and dry this afternoon. that dangerous surf, breakers up to 25 feet. sneaker waves, long run-ups, all those things that made our beaches deadly so far this rain season. nearing record warmth next week.

for today, close to average. about 58 to 62 degrees. now for tonight, it's much colder. frost is possible in the deepest inland valleys. 30s will dominate. low to mid 40s around most of the bay. here's my accuweather 7-day forecast. the next couple of nights will be colder. during the day, even with sunshine, it's going to take a while to warm up and dry out the ground just a little bit. as far as monday, tuesday, wednesday and thursday go, look at that building warmth, even some 70s which are near record highs by thursday. extended period of dry weather on the way.

it is 5:23. if you're just joining us, here's the 7 things to know this morning. number one, a u.s. capitol police officer has died from injuries sustained during wednesday's violent siege there. officials say officer brian sicknick collapsed when he returned to his division office. he was taken to a local hospital where he died yesterday. number two, house democrats planning to move forward with plans to impeach president trump if his cabinet doesn't remove him using the 25th amendment. katherine clark says the articles could be brought to the house floor early next week.

the bay area stay-at-home order likely extended beyond today. icu capacity has dropped to just 3.5% here. number four, moderna's covid-19 vaccine has been authorized for emergency use authorization in the uk. that becomes the third vaccine to be authorized in the country. the uk is buying 17 million doses. i know you don't want to see showers during the morning commute but this will be it for possibly seven weeks. it's a 1 on the storm impact scale. very light, a couple hundredths of an inch of rain mainly in the north bay as we head through the morning commute. number six, taking a live look outside right now showing you the san mateo bridge. just echoing mike here to be careful on the roads this morning. it is slick. thankfully we've not seen a lot of spinouts so far. and number seven, how is this for a flashback friday. the popular '90s ice cream cake vinnetta is making a comeback.

here's the south bay, you can see how dry it is. from the san mateo bridge out to livermore on 580 northward, you can see scattered light showers. those extend up to the north bay. this is the last and final push of this wet weather. it was heavier, that initial line, this one will be light and scattered. it will keep things wet where it already is wet, which is in those areas i mentioned through the morning commute. here's a little bit of light rain in walnut creek as we look south on 680 towards 24. by noon you will need the sunglasses and put the umbrella way far back into the closet after it dries out. mid to upper 50s by 4:00. a colder night is on the way. record highs. i'll wrap that up in the seven-day forecast. reggie? >> thank you. a u.s. capitol police officer died as a result of issues from the siege on the capitol building. this as president trump seems to finally be publicly conceding the election. jobina is at the live desk with those new updates. jobina? >> thank you.

the metropolitan police department's homicide unit will be investigating the 42-year-old officer's death. officials say that brian sicknick was injured while physically engaging with protesters. they say he collapsed when he returned to his division office. he was taken to a local hospital where he passed away yesterday. his brother said after a day of fighting for his life he passed away a hero. i would like to thank all of his brothers and sisters in law enforcement for the compassion and support they've shown my family. more than 50 capitol police and metropolitan police officers were hurt including several hospitalized for serious injuries. so far about 80 people have been arrested. of the thousands of rioters who were there, this morning d.c.'s attorney general is on "gma" and says he is confident they'll be able to track down more. >> the internet now can be

utilized to identify the very people who violated the capitol of the united states. i can tell you that just last night i got a call from a lawyer in town who indicated he was representing a client who was in california who was at the capitol and now wants to turn herself in. these calls will continue. >> president trump released a video on twitter yesterday condemning the violence and finally acknowledged his defeat in the election saying his focus is now turning to ensuring a smooth, orderly and seamless transition of power. trump is slated to hand over control of the white house to president-elect biden in 12 days. >> thank you. now we want to get to the latest with the virus pandemic. overnight the uk did authorize moderna's vaccine for emergency use, now that vaccine is the third vaccine available at this point in the uk. now this announcement came hours after we learned some grim news

about the u.s. the u.s. recorded more than 4,000 coronavirus deaths in just 24 hours. this is the first time that this has happened since the beginning of the pandemic. the mayor of hard-hit los angeles is pleading for help. >> well, it's every six seconds now a new case and every eight minutes somebody is dying here. i'm asking for folks across america, if you can spare a doctor or nurse, if you can spare anything, send it here. >> in l.a. county about 1 in 5 covid-19 tests are coming back positive. the bay area's stay-at-home order is set to be extended beyond today. we're facing something we have not seen so far, that is an icu capacity of only 3.5%. that comes as efforts are trying to expand to get more people vaccinated. amy hollyfield is live for us with the first shots given at an east bay facility. >> good morning. yes. this senior facility, this

senior assisted living facility in walnut creek got the vaccine this week. this is byron park in walnut creek. it was the first place, the pilot for the john strike team effort. only a half dozen people opted out. so a 90-year-old woman who got the vaccine here said she felt nervous about living in a care facility during a pandemic. >> it's like living in a petri dish because everybody is vulnerable. if we all now get vaccinated, you know, that's going to be living in a bubble. we'll be safe. >> they vaccinated 270 workers and residents of byron park in one day. next week more assisted living

facilities should be getting the vaccine. live in walnut creek, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. kaiser san jose is now facing $43,000 in fines for not telling the county about an outbreak among the staff members for seven days. the county says it found out after kaiser sent a news release to the media and now 60 staff members have tested positive and one person has died. the county says the outbreak was not caused by the new coronavirus variant. and speaking of the new coronavirus variant that was first detected in the uk, it has now been found in a total of eight states in the u.s. matt boone is explaining there are likely more cases out there and now a peninsula company is working to find them. >> viral sequencing or viral surveillance is one tool we have not used as much as we should have during the pandemic. >> reporter: james lou is the president of helix, a testing and genomics company.

they ramped up testing of coronavirus cases noticing a trouble trend. >> most people do not have international travel or exposure which means they're catching it from the community. >> reporter: since the pandemic began, less than 1% of positive cases have been sequenced in the u.s. according to the cdc, which made the variant hard to track. >> we're not doing enough genetic testing for the virus. >> reporter: that's dr. charles chu with ucsf. his lab found two variants in san bernardino county, but the u.s. is late to the game on making this a priority. >> i believe overall there needs to be a huge increase in resources because this is a -- this is something which is time urgent. >> reporter: the helix lab said it will begin processing 1,000 samples a day but both say it needs to be closer to 10,000 a day to quickly track and isolate the cases. >> the danger of having these

strains undetected, especially if these strains are more contagious, they may eventually evolve to become the predominant strain. >> reporter: matt boone, abc7 news. coming up, arrested. the woman who falsely accused a black teenager of stealing her phone is in custody. but the sheriff's office says she didn't go without a fight. and a financial boost for a local restaurant that's been hurting a lot because of the pandemic. first we get a check of the weather with meteorologist mike nicco. >> all right. let's talk about temperatures first. i want to show you how warmly you should dress. temperatures in the upper 40s to low 50s with scattered shower across the east bay right now. and you can see with scattered showers elsewhere we're mainly in the low 40s to mid 50s. a little fog in the north bay, some tule fog encroaching from the east into the eastern parts of contra costa county. something we'll keep an eye on. showers should keep most of that

at bay. you can see some light showers across the north bay. no yellows, no oranges. these are actually starting to kind of dissipate a little bit. we're getting the last push as you can see on future radar by 9:00, 9:30. the commute is over and so are the showers. the gray you see are the clouds. notice they will linger a while, but we'll open up for blue sky and some clean air. have the sunglasses handy. temperatures will reach pretty seasonal levels, upper 50s to near 60 this afternoon. if you're going out this evening, you don't need an umbrella but dress warmer. it will be cooler. you can see if you get caught under one of these showers, another couple hundredths of an inch of rain is possible. my biggest concern of hydroplaning is because of the heavier rain that fell when the first wave moved through. that left some rain across our north bay neighborhoods. otherwise the storm concerns are low and pretty much fading away. when we come back, we'll talk about the record warmth next week. i want to bring jobina in here.

released the december jobs report. jobina is tracking the numbers. >> thank you. 2020 closed out with a thud with the pace of job growth slowing dramatically due to the covid-19 pandemic. the unemployment rate remained at 6.7%. but the biggest sign of the deceleration in non-farm payroll growth, 140,000 jobs were unexpectedly lost last month. economists had projected 50,000 jobs being added. that's a sharp contrast from november when 245,000 jobs were added. it's the first monthly loss since the pandemic erupted in early spring. we'll see how wall street reacts to all of this when the markets open up in 45 minutes. new developments, san francisco's historic tattag grill is getting assistance. the owners are getting up to 31,0$31,000 a month courtesy of barstool fund which helps family run businesses impacted by

san francisco's camp mather will not be reopening any time soon. the park will remain closed for the second summer because of covid-19. the 337-acre family camp site located outside of yosemite park normally holds 95 campers and 70 employees every week during the summer. officials say social distancing is pretty much impossible since campers share meals and activities. preparations are under way in tampa, florida to make sure this year's super bowl is a fun and safe experience. an outdoor nfl experience is being set up outside of raymond james stadium. it will be free but capacity is limited. as for the game itself, the attendance will be capped. the nfl has not announced the number of tickets available for the game.
