in stimulus payments if it's approved. good morning, it's friday, january 8th. we'll start with a look at our weather and meteorologist mike nicco. >> all right. thank you very much. nice to see you. thanks for joining us. let's start with the storm impact scale. it's a 1 for scattered light showers during the morning commute. the best chance mainly across the northern half of the bay and then dangerous surf will develop right now, it starts at 6:00 this morning through 6:00 tomorrow morning. you can see the heavier cells, the darker green off the peninsula coast, those stretch over to the east bay valleys and up to the north bay. around 37, 101, 29 and 80. you can see this storm system is weakening. it's only going to be around about another three or four hours. we'll talk about record high temperatures coming up. developing news, a police officer has died following the violent attack at

the u.s. capitol. he was hurt during confrontations with the rioters. this as president trump finally appears to be recognizing his election loss. calls are growing for him to step down immediately for inciting violence. >> we will proceed with every tool we have. >> that was katherine clark speaking this morning on "good morning america." here's faith abubey. >> usa! >> reporter: this morning, outrage as more details come to light about the deadly attack on the u.s. capitol. investigators finding five guns including a military style assault rifle, two pipebombs and 11 molotov cocktails. more than police officers hurt during the clashes with the violent pro-trump mob. thursday evening 42-year-old officer brian sicknick succumbing to injuries sustained in the battle.

loss. >> my focus now turns to ensuring a smooth, orderly and seamless transition of power. >> reporter: and now with just 12 days until president-elect joe biden's inauguration, a seven-foot fence going up around the capitol and questions about police conduct. videos appearing to show some officers moving barricades for demonstrators. officers have arrested more than 80 people so far. the capitol hill police chief resigning because of the botched response. faith abubey, abc news, washington. this morning the fbi is looking to identify the violent rioters from wednesday's rampage at the capitol. jobina is at the live desk with the latest on this. >> among the people the fbi are looking for is the person who planted pipebombs on person. this man placed active explosive devices outside the republican and democratic national committee. abc obtained this exclusive photo of one of the bombs. the fbi is offering up to

$50,000 for information on this suspect. at the same time the fbi is also looking to identify the violent rioters from wednesday's attack. these are just some of the hundreds of trump supporters that could face sedition, insurrection and rioting charges. the acting u.s. attorney says no suspects will be ruled out including the capitol police and the president himself. several trump administration officials are stepping down in the final days of his presidency. most notably secretary of education, betsy devos and transportation secretary, elaine chao. seven others in the administration announced their resignation after wednesday's violence. the bay area's stay-at-home order will likely be extended beyond today. icu capacity has dropped to the lowest availability at 3.5%. in the san joaquin valley and southern california regions they have zero percent still.

that doesn't mean there's no beds but hospitals have activated their surge plans. community-based clinics are preparing to start large-scale immunizations as soon as vaccines are available. health is an essential pillar of building a better bay area. this morning we're looking at the challenges that might lie ahead especially for our vulnerable communities. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live with how one large clinic operation is hoping to address concerns about vaccine safety. amy? >> hi, kirum. the vaccine has reached this assisted living facility. overall progress has been slow, many are finding that it's taking some convincing to get people to take the vaccine. in the south bay, they are working on a pro-vaccine campaign. they are finding there are even front line health care workers who are hesitant to take it.

at the gardner health services clinic they say 30% of their workers don't want the vaccine. the ones who did decide to get the shot did it while cameras were rolling to try and convince colleagues to join them. >> we're willing to take it. we're going to be vaccinated. they should seriously consider being vaccinated as well because it will benefit the community at large. >> i feel the only way the surge can be controlled is by mass vaccination. >> governor newsom is going to allocate some of his vaccine budget to outreach and education. there is also the hope that time will help. as people see those who got the vaccine coming out of it okay and not dealing with side effects, the hope is that they will decide it is okay for them to get it, too. here at this assisted living facility they only had a handful of people decline to get it.

most people were very excited about it. reporting live in walnut creek, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. governor newsom is set to unveil his state budget proposal for the 2021/2022 fiscal year. it's expected to include $600 stimulus payments for low-income residents impacted by covid-19. residents with an annual income of $30,000 or less are eligible for the payments. governor newsom wants to extend the moratorium on evictions during the pandemic which is expected to expire january 31st. the governor's livestream event will be held at 11:00 a.m. still ahead, the pfizer vaccine is put to the test against the covid-19 variant. and fewer bumps in the road in san francisco. what the mtc is saying about the city's road conditions. and we had a light shower roll through walnut creek, dropped 0.1 inches of rain, keeping things slick on 680. we'll keep a chance of showers in the forecast through 9:00,

welcome back. let's look at what i expect out of the rest of this storm. that's just a little bit of hydroplaning possible, especially up in the north bay. we had 0.15 inches fall during the overnight hours. 37 and 101 and the richmond-san rafael bridge getting peppered with light rain. same thing with the bay bridge and the golden gate bridge and the great highway. even possibly as far south as the san mateo bridge right now. here's a look at future radar, you can see by 9:30, most of the showers are completely gone. sunglasses needed if you're heading out for lunch into the afternoon hours. with mostly clear skies tonight, it will be rather cold. rainfall amounts, you can get

another 0.01 to 0.02 inches of rain over the next couple of hours. let's talk about the roads. jobina, good morning. >> good morning. thank you. so you know what is just so stunning on the traffic front is that usually when we have rain like this or any sort of precipitati precipitation, no matter how strong or not, there are loads of spinouts. we do not have a single incident on the board right now from the chp. a live look outside showing you emeryville. those headlights making their way westbound on 80 towards the maze and eventually the toll plaza. there are no metering lights, but i'll show you that with the next camera. you can see the pavement there reflecting from the lights. it's a little wet and slick. again, i'm so surprised to see this. bringing in the map here, you can view all of that green. hardly a slowdown out of tracy right now. a great time to head out the door if you do need to commute this morning. streets in san francisco are in good condition. this is according to the

metropolitan transportation commission which tracks the road quality in the bay area. on a scale of 0 to 100, san francisco got a 75. that's eight points higher than the bay area average. the streets are judged on ride quality, cracking, wear and tear. in 2011, the city invested 6$65 million in making streets smoother and safer. san francisco police arrested a suspect in the deadly shooting of a 6-year-old boy on the fourth of july. ja jase young was shot while watching fireworks with his family. james harbor was arrested on wednesday. a motive was not released but investigators said young was an innocent victim in a targeted shooting. >> that's terrible. coming up, the e-commerce side that are taking down stores that sell president trump

welcome back. a new study suggests that pfizer's covid-19 vaccine does work against the new virus variant. jobina has more on what researchers have discovered from the live desk. >> thank you. experts have said that the vaccine still works, a new study backs up the belief that the pfizer vaccine protects against the mutation. pfizer teamed up with researchers from the university of texas medical branch in galveston. they used blood samples from 20 people who received the vaccine, antibodies from those vaccine recipients successfully fended off the virus in lab studies. scientists say it's a reassuring

finding. >> thank you. yet another affect of the covid-19 pandemic, it may be bringing a permanent end to one of the biggest perks of many tech companies in the bay area. bloomberg reports that with most employees now working from home, possibly permanently, many silicon valley tech companies no longer have the need for the campus cafeteria. it's resulted in a lot of food service workers losing their jobs, but google and several other companies in san mateo and santa clara counties have continued to pay hourly service workers including cafeteria staff. we continue to track more than 2 million covid vaccine doses shipped to california over the past month. only a quarter of them have actually been used. abc7 news i-team is digging into a possible solution. the college of san mateo nursing program has 100 trained nursing students certified to administer vaccines. that class alone can provide an additional 10,000 injections. program officials have contacted

80 coming down through richmond and also the richmond-san rafael bridge. 101 around san rafael all the way down across the golden gate and the bay bridge peppered with light showers. same thing with the san mateo bridge. you can see a little sheen on there as the lights are reflecting off more than normal. morning showers are then partly cloudy and dry this afternoon. we have a long time of dry weather and the possibility of record highs. this storm will leave one last calling card in the form of dangerous surf. it started at 6:00 this morning and goes through 6:00 tomorrow morning. the surf has been dangerous. four or five lives lost this rain season. be careful there. 58 to 62 with partly cloudy conditions. put the umbrella well back into the closet. maybe you will need an extra night on the bed tonight. we'll be much colder.

they board. the measures will be required for all visitors including uk nationals. people who fail to comply could face a 500 pound fine. san francisco police are trying to find the person who did this. vandalized a historic symbol in japantown. these are the surveillance images showing a person hacking two cherry blossom trees. this is in front of the japanese cultural and community center on sutter street. the executive director said the person cut off all the branches. because of this damage the cherry blossoms won't bloom from the trees this year. >> to be greeted with two cherry trees that we have been cherishing and honoring for so long destroyed just really saddened us to start the new year like this. >> you can see someone placed oragami ornaments on the vandalized trees in an effort to make them more beautiful right

he was taken to a local hospital where he passed away yesterday. his brother said after a day of fighting for his life he passed away a hero. i would like to thank all of his brothers and sisters in law enforcement for the compassion and support they've shown my family. law enforcement officials say more than 50 capitol police and metropolitan police officers were hurt including several hospitalized for serious injuries. so far about 80 people have been arrested. of the thousands of rioters who this morning d.c.'s attorney general is on "gma" and says he is confident they'll be able to track down more. >> the internet now can be utilized to identify the very people who violated the capitol of the united states. i can tell you that just last night i got a call from a lawyer in town who indicated he was representing a client who was in california who was at the capitol and now wants to turn herself in.

these calls will continue. >> president trump released a video on twitter yesterday condemning the violence and finally acknowledged his defeat in the election saying his focus is now turning to ensuring a smooth, orderly and seamless transition of power. trump is slated to hand over control of the white house to president-elect biden in 12 days. >> thank you. >> that is a short period of time but there are still calls for the president's removal and they're getting louder from democratic lawmakers including from some in the bay area. sources say that vp pence is highly unlikely to pursue the removal of the president using the 25th amendment. impeachment would be the next option and we heard from the assistant house speaker this morning about that. democrats could bring articles next week. as for a self-pardon which president trump reportedly considered, experts don't believe it would hold up in court. >> it is inconceivable to me

that there is a judge in this country who would give effect to that pardon. so one of the drawbacks to that is he would have to list specificity any crimes that he may have committed. >> some believe the president could resign and then the vice president could pardon him. on the other hand that may permanently damage mike pence's legacy. now to the latest on the pandemic. overnight the uk authorized moderna's vaccine for emergency use making it the third vaccine available in the uk. this announcement came hours after we learned some grim news about the u.s. the u.s. recorded more than 4,000 coronavirus deaths in just 24 hours. this is the first time that this has happened since the beginning of the pandemic. the mayor of hard-hit los angeles is pleading for help. >> well, it's every six seconds now a new case and every eight minutes somebody is dying here. i'm asking for folks across america, if you can spare a

doctor or nurse, if you can spare anything, send it here. >> in l.a. county about 1 in 5 covid-19 tests are coming back positive. the bay area's stay-at-home order is set to be extended beyond today. our icu capacity is terrible, it's dropped to the lowest level we've seen, 3.5%. that comes as efforts are trying to expand to get more people vaccinated. amy hollyfield is live for us with the first shots given at an east bay facility. >> right. progress on getting this vaccine out has been slow. this senior living facility in walnut creek did get the vaccine. byron park in walnut creek was the first place, the pilot for the john maracovich strike team vaccination effort. only a handful of people on theed opted out. a 90-year-old woman who got the vaccine here said she has felt very nervous about living in a

care facility during a pandemic. >> it's like living in a petri dish because everybody is vulnerable. if we all now get vaccinated, you know, that's going to be living in a bubble. we'll be safe. >> they vaccinated 270 workers and residents of byron park in one day. next week more east bay assisted living facilities should be getting the vaccine. live in walnut creek, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. two of the bay area's largest funeral homes have nearly tripled their capacity in the last few weeks reporting the highest spike in covid-19 deaths since the onset of the pandemic. abc7 news reporter stephanie sierra has the story.

>> reporter: exhausted and overwhelmed, dan dougen in daly city says it's the busiest they've been. >> we've gone from 10 to 30 covid related deaths in the last month. >> reporter: back in march, dougen doubled the storage to accommodate the surge. >> thank god we did. during the first nine months we wondered was it totally necessary? it was definitely 100% necessary. >> reporter: now even with the extra space, his capacity is at 80%. he's accommodating families with safe outdoor services where pews are spaced six feet apart. dougen served entire families who have tested positive for covid after losing their loved one to the virus. >> we're just starting to see the christmas holiday surge and i'm sure there will be an additional surge or continuing surge with the new year's holiday, as well. >> reporter: robert gordon president of cypress lawn funeral home agrees it's only getting worse. his facility's combined total capacity spiked to 80%.

>> last month we doubled the number we normally would see of families we helped through that and this month it looks like we'll probably do four to five times the number of services for families that were affected by covid-19. >> reporter: in march, gordon purchased these two storage units that can accommodate an additional 100 bodies. >> until november we really didn't use them at all but now we are starting to use both containers to help us through this time. >> reporter: he knows of several smaller funeral homes across the bay area that have already reached capacity and have started to turn people away. a grim reminder. >> this is much more dangerous at this stage than any stage it ha has been since back in march. >> reporter: stephanie sierra, abc 7 news. kaiser san jose is now facing $43,000 in fines for not telling the county about an outbreak among the staff members for seven days. the county says it found out

after kaiser sent a news release to the media. 60 staff members have tested positive and one person has died. the county says the outbreak was not caused by the new coronavirus variant. a bay area company is working with the cdc to identify cases of the new variant within the u.s. the more contagious variant first observed in the uk has already been detected in eight u.s. states including california. helix partnered with ilumnia to sequence the genetic material from positive covid-19 tests to sequence where the virus is spreading. >> most people do not have international travel or exposure which means they're catching it from the community. >> the lab says it will begin processing about 1,000 samples per day, but experts say it needs to be closer to 10,000 per day to quickly track and isolate the cases. coming up, so-called soho

miaya ponsetto is being held without bail. detectives teamed up to arrest the 22-year-old last night. she's facing charges after falsely accused a black teen of stealing her phone at a new york city hotel last month. last night she did not go down without a fight. officials say ponsetto ran from deputies after an attempted traffic stop before resisting arrest. she was finally pulled out of the car. the teen's parents are responding to claims that ponsetto is remorseful. >> i pray for her, i really do. in the context of all of the excuses that her attorney made, at this point it's not even about an apology anymore. it's about change. >> ponsetto is expected to face a ventura county judge today before being extradited to new york. a menlo park candy shop owner is facing backlash for attending protests in washington, d.c. abc7 news reporter anser hassan tells us people are calling for a boycott of her store.

>> reporter: the menlo park candy store sugar shack is getting trashed online. the backlash started after this photo of owner suzi tinsley at wednesday's pro-trump protest started circulating online linking her to the mob that stormed the capitol. >> call this out and say this is wrong, this is not okay. >> reporter: local youth activist shane henry says people are demanding the shoppers boycott sugar shack. hundreds took to yelp to attack tinsley and her store. >> to support an unhinged president and come back to your community with a photo? i mean, this is the start of something for sure. >> reporter: tinsley says she was in d.c. because she wanted to attend president trump's last rally and doesn't support those who rampaged through the halls of congress. she wouldn't talk on camera, but in a written statement to abc7 news, tinsley writes in part, i was there for a peaceful march. i left the rally when the crowd

became unruly. i returned to my hotel at that point long before the agitators stormed the building. tinsley says she only sent the photo to a few friends which were then leaked online. many of tinsley's neighborhoods came to her defense, denouncing the calls to shut down the store. >> no, i don't think so. that's her living. >> reporter: tinsley and shane may not share the same political beliefs, but they both agree to sit down and meet. in menlo park, anser hassan, abc7 news. about 20 minutes ago the american flag above the u.s. capitol was raised and then lowered to half staff in honor of the fallen capitol police officer, brian sicknick. this morning house speaker nancy pelosi ordered the flags at the capitol to be lowered. officials say officer sicknick was injured while physically engaging with protesters. they say he collapsed when he returned to his division office. he was taken to a local hospital where he died yesterday. more coverage of the fallout from wednesday's riot on our website, abc7news.com. there's also a photo gallery of

images from the event. teachers in the east bay will hold a car caravan protesting governor newsom's plan to reopen schools. students could return to the classroom as soon as next month. activists say in-person classes should not resume until after the pandemic. the caravan will begin at oakland tech and will be followed by a press conference at the california state building. san francisco's camp mather will not be reopening any time soon. the park will remain closed for the second summer because of covid-19. the 337-acre family camp located outside of yosemite park normally hosts 500 campers and 70 employees every week during the summer. officials say social distancing is pretty much impossible since campers share meals and social activities. we're expecting to learn

more about vice president-elect biden's economic team today. the nominees will be announced at an event in delaware. the u.s. labor department just released the latest job report, the unemployment rate is at 6.7%, but 140,000 jobs were unexpectedly lost last month. economists projected 50,000 jobs would be added. that's a sharp contrast from november when 245,000 jobs were added. this is the first monthly loss since april. now let's take a live look at the new york stock exchange as trading gets under way. you can see we are up slightly, about 20 points. bark box, no? this golden retriever only needs doorstop thingy for entertainment.
