good morning, america. pressure on the president. democrats threatening to impeach donald trump for a second time accusing him of willfully inciting violence against the government. more republicans calling for him to resign. the president-elect weighing in. >> he's one of the most incompetent presidents in the history of the united states of america. >> twitter permanently banning trump's account, his final message before the plug was pulled. the nationwide hunt to locate the rioters who stormed the capitol. the new arrests. this man at speaker pelosi's desk, and a state lawmaker. plus, the search for the person suspected of planting pipe bombs nearby. and the now-deleted video posted by donald trump jr.

will there be any incitement charges after that trump rally? security failure. lawmakers calling for a congressional investigation over the deadly riot at the u.s. capitol. abc news learning days before the attack, the d.c. government requested additional help, so why did capitol police decline it? breaking news, a boeing 737 goes missing off indonesia losing contact with air traffic controllers, a search under way after debris reportedly spotted in the water. new vaccine plan. joe biden looking to release nearly all available doses when he takes office to speed up vaccinations as covid-19 cases break new records. hospitals struggling to meet demand. and big hopes and million-dollar dreams. from the gridiron as nfl playoff teams vie for victory to the ticket counter with two giant lottery jackpots up for grabs.
7:02 am
good morning, everybody. we want to start by telling you some breaking news. there is a search under way for a boeing 737 that has gone missing off of indonesia. it lost contact with air traffic controllers and debris has reportedly been found in the water. we'll have a live report on this story coming up. but we do want to begin here with the ongoing fallout from the attack on the u.s. capitol building. democrats in congress are now laying the groundwork for impeachment and the first republican senator has come forward to say she wants trump to resign. >> and here's another consequence of wednesday's mayhem. twitter has now permanently suspended president trump's account after 50,000 tweets, this is what @realdonaldtrump's profile looks like this morning. meanwhile, lawmakers are calling for a thorough investigation into the security lapses that allowed scores of rioters to breach the capitol building.
7:03 am
some calling it a massive security failure. >> and authorities across the country are rounding up suspects to face federal charges for their alleged roles in that attack. we have team coverage, first, let's go to abc's rachel scott at the white house with president trump's social media suspension, which he tried multiple times to subvert leading to even more bans. good morning to you, rachel. >> reporter: eva, good morning, and this is how the president's final days in office are playing out. he is facing growing calls to resign, threats of impeachment and now he is permanently suspended from twitter. days after a violent mob stormed the u.s. capitol, the president of the united states is now permanently suspended from twitter. the social media company cutting off the president's account due to the risk of further incitement of violence. it was on that very platform that president trump told his supporters to turn out tweeting be there, will be wild.
7:04 am
and they showed up. this new video capturing the moment trump supporters broke into the capitol. an officer pinned between rioters blood on his face as he cries out for help. >> help! help! >> reporter: 24 hours later, the president finally condemned the violence. >> to those who engaged in the acts of violence and destruction, you do not represent our country. >> reporter: but in a new interview with "60 minutes," house speaker nancy pelosi doesn't hold back. >> sadly the person that's running the executive branch is a deranged, unhinged, dangerous president of the united states. but he has done something so serious that there should be prosecution against him. >> reporter: democrats are threatening to impeach trump for a second time accusing the president of willfully inciting violence against the government. president-elect joe biden says
7:05 am
he's leaving that decision up to congress but making it clear he thinks trump is unfit to serve. >> he's one of the most incompetent presidents in the history of the united states of america. and so the idea that i think he shouldn't be out of office yesterday is not the issue. >> reporter: republican leader kevin mccarthy is urging both parties to work together to lower the temperature. but other members of the president's party are not mincing words. republican senator lisa murkowski now demanding trump resign. in an interview saying, i want him out. he has caused enough damage. and congressman adam kinzinger calling for the 25th amendment to be invoked. >> all indications are that the president has become unmoored, not just from his duty, or even his health, but from reality itself. >> reporter: when the president got word his twitter account had been permanently shut down, he took to the official
7:06 am
presidential account to blast the decision writing, we will not be silenced. but twitter later took that down too. the president's final tweet, announcing he would not be attending the inauguration. biden saying he's just fine with that. >> one of the few things he and i have ever agreed on. it's a good thing he's not showing up. >> reporter: it's still unclear this morning whether or not vice president mike pence will attend the inauguration. in our its history, a president has never impeached twice. but if democrats move forward in the house, they could introduce that as early as monday. the white house is blasting this as partisan politics saying it would only further divide the country, dan. >> rachel, thank you so much. i want to pick up right there. let's get more on the efforts to remove trump from office. kate shaw is our supreme court contributor. kate, good morning. we know some democrats in congress are drawing up an article of impeachment. if speaker pelosi gets fully behind this, what are the next steps here and how long could it take because as we all know
7:07 am
there's not much time? >> no, that's right, dan. if we remember just this time last year president trump was beginning his impeachment trial in the senate, those trials typically take several weeks, proceedings in house could take weeks or months but both the house and senate have a lot of control over the time line here, so i think it's entirely possible if the house wanted to it could vote on these articles within a day or two and so then i think the question is how fast the senate wants to act. right now, the senate is in recess and not scheduled to come back until the day before inauguration. but mitch mcconnell could easily call his members back and i think it's just a question of political will so, if the senate did come back early, they'd have to have an abbreviated trial but again it could be a day if they wanted it to. it's really a question of whether there is the will in the senate to move the ordinary time line much faster. >> so sorry to interrupt you there. but they could conceivably hold the trial in the senate even after the president has left. >> that's exactly right, so it's actually possible to impeach a former official, not just a sitting official.
7:08 am
we've done it once before not with the president, with a cabinet secretary in the 19th century, and i think the reason for that is not obviously to expel the president from office, the inauguration of joe biden will have already done that after january 20th, but impeachment has another potential consequence, which is disqualifying a president from holding future office so there may well still be a reason to hold a trial and to actually vote to disqualify trump even after january 20th on the logic that it would prevent him from seeking and obtaining the nomination to run for president again in 2024 or hold other federal public office. >> while we watch and wait to see how this impeachment process unfolds, if it unfolds at all what are the other legal avenues for removal here for those who are critical of the president? there's a lot of talk, for example, of the 25th amendment. >> yeah, so i would say there are two potential additional routes, right, one as you say is
7:09 am
the 25th amendment, that's a mechanism in the constitution that lets the vice president and a majority of the cabinet declare that the president is unable to discharge the powers and duties of the office and if that happens the vice president becomes the acting president. there are further proceedings in congress if the president objects but all that takes time and probably congress would just run out the clock and pence would finish the term, and of course, the third lawful possibility would be resignation and there is some talk of that and then, of course, also mike pence would become acting president, and then there are questions of pardons that would arise, the vice president could in theory pardon president trump so i would say that's right. impeachment, the 25th amendment and resignation are the three lawful means by which the president could in theory exit office or be, you know, forced from office between now and january 20th. >> this period between now and january 20th could be turbulent to say the least. kate shaw, our supreme court contributor. thank you very much for getting up early. whit, over to you. dan, meantime, the manhunt is under way nationwide to track down those involved in wednesday's deadly riot at the
7:10 am
capitol. abc's kenneth moton is in washington, d.c., with the latest arrests and charges filed. kenneth, good morning to you. >> reporter: whit, good morning. federal and local authorities have quite the challenge right here in d.c. with so many investigations under way, authorities say they expect more charges, more arrests in the coming days, weeks and months. this morning, that nationwide manhunt is intensifying for the pro-trump rioters in the deadly and violent capitol breach. law enforcement combing through social media posts, surveillance video and mountains of cell phone data receiving thousands of tips after the release of these bolo posters. new video appearing to show an associated press photographer being assaulted by the mob. >> get me out of here. >> reporter: thousands were there but so far only 13 charged in federal court. authorities i.d.'ing this man at house speaker nancy pelosi's desk. this morning, the suspect richard barnett in custody in arkansas. these new images show barnett turning himself in to

national guard units from the states around washington, d.c., and washington, d.c.? where were they. >> reporter: abc news has learned three days before the attack the d.c. government's requested additional security from the department of defense but capitol police declining the extra personnel ahead of the january 6th trump rally because there was, quote, no indication of significant violent protests. but on social media many warnings. including this one from president trump saying it would be wild. and sure enough, it was. a pro-trump mob breaching capitol security. desecrating the halls of congress and terrorizing lawmakers inside. but the law enforcement response hours into the violent insurrection. a sharp contrast to how they handled this june 1st peaceful protest for racial justice in lafayette square. where the peaceful demonstrators were peppered with rubber pellets, pro-trump rioters at the capitol taking selfies with some officers in the background and then one officer holding the door open as rioters

7:16 am
borneo lost contact that happened around 2:40 p.m. local time and debris has reportedly been found in the water. now the exact number of people on board is unknown at this point but local reports say that a sharp drop in altitude was detected just a few minutes after takeoff. it is not the boeing 737 max that just recently returned to service in the u.s. that model jet involved in a previous crash that took off from this airport three years ago. this incident comes just days after the company was charged by the department of justice for allegedly defrauding the united states. u.s. officials fined the company more than $2.5 billion for allegedly lying to regulators about those two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019, and in a statement earlier this week, boeing acknowledged those fines from the u.s. government with the ceo saying this resolution is a serious reminder to all of us of how critical our obligation of transparency to regulators is and the consequences that our company can face if any one of us falls short of those expectations. eva.
7:17 am
>> julia macfarlane for us, thank you. let's bring in colonel steve ganyard now. i'm just curious, exactly what will authorities be looking at as this investigation gets under way? can you walk us through that. >> good morning, eva. the data we have from the crash is quite detailed. it took off, normal takeoff right-hand turn out over the java sea, got up to about 11,000 feet, and in less than a minute impacted the java sea. so why would that drop have occurred? lots of things could have happened. weather doesn't seem to have been a factor. we do know indonesia has probably the worst air traffic safety record in the world and so the investigators would be looking at all sorts of things, could have been a catastrophic failure, could have been a bomb. everything is open at this point, but we do know that it was a very precipitous drop and whether that was a loss of control or something else is to be determined. the wreckage has been found so the black box probably will be found shortly. the good news is that this is not a 737 max.
7:18 am
it is a much older airplane and so there may be something related to the crash due to its age. >> hopefully there's some answers in that black box. thank you so much, colonel ganyard. always appreciate your time. dan. let's check the weather now. rob marciano with snow in the south. rob, good morning. >> good morning, guys. good to be with you. we had snow across north carolina, virginia. this is virginia, half a foot of snow falling there and tennessee, similar amounts. north carolina seeing 8.5 inches of snow. this particular storm is on its way out, but we have another storm coming in that will be impacting the south as well. a lot of action is across the south. heavy snow from colorado to western texas, tonight into tomorrow morning. midland to abilene that will create dangerous travel conditions, locally up to a foot in some spots and then getting into the heart of texas, dallas, just south of dallas we got winter storm watches posted, waco, lufkin, tyler to austin, just north of austin really. could see a few inches of snow
7:19 am
tomorrow night into, say, monday morning. one to three inches in spots but i think out of the major cities is where you'll see the most significant accumulation but a few flakes certainly will fly in the big "d" which gets everybody excited. hopefully the roads will be okay. good saturday morning, i'm lisa argen, you can see from walnut week we have clear sky but that's not the case everywhere, patchy dense fog from the delta through the north bay. it lifts and we're left with sunny skies, some high clouds today and tomorrow, but we're looking at warmer weather as we get into the middle and end of next week. as for today, about 60 over into the east bay, look for 60 in palo alto. a nice recovery from those 30s this morning. a slight c one thing i have yet to do is wear a cowboy hat in the snow, so that's on my to-do list this year. if you're in central texas you'll get a little bit of that tonight. >> well -- >> i've never seen that before. >> yeah, the naked cowboy has left times square. >> oh, you know, we're so close
