rachel scott who's at the white house with the latest. rachel, good morning once again. >> reporter: dan, good morning. president-elect joe biden saying he is just fine with the president's decision to not attend the inauguration with just 11 days left in office. president trump is now facing growing calls to resign, threats of impeachment, and he's been permanently suspended from one of his favorite platforms, twitter. days after a violent mob stormed the u.s. capitol, the president of the united states is now permanently suspended from twitter. the social media company cutting off the president's account due to the risk of further incitement of violence. it was on that very platform that president trump told his supporters to turn out tweeting, be there, will be wild. >> more patriots in the front. >> reporter: this new video capturing the moment trump supporters broke into the capitol. an officer pinned between rioters, blood on his face as he cries out for help.

>> help, help! >> reporter: 24 hours later, the president finally condemned the violence. >> to those who engaged in the acts of violence and destruction, you do not represent our country. >> reporter: democrats are threatening to impeach trump for a second time, accusing the president of willfully inciting violence against the government. >> sadly the person who's running the executive branch is a deranged, unhinged, dangerous president of the united states. he has done something so serious that there should be prosecution against him. >> reporter: when the president got word that his personal twitter account had been permanently shut down, he took to the official presidential accounts to blast the decision writing, we will not be silenced. but twitter later took that down too. the president's final tweet announcing he would not be attending the inauguration. and republican senator lisa murkowski is now calling for president trump to resign.

she says that she wants him out. if democrats do decide to move forward with this in the house we could see them introduce that impeachment resolution as early as monday. but never before in united states history have we seen a president be impeached twice. eva. >> rachel scott for us there at the white house. meantime, authorities are working to track down those trump supporters who stormed the capitol since there were so few immediate arrests. abc's kenneth moton was on the streets when this was all unfolding wednesday. he joins us now with more. kenneth, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, eva. federal and local law enforcement have their hands full this morning working dozens of cases. we know that only so far only 13 pro-trump rioters have been charged in federal court. this morning that manhunt for those who stormed that american symbol of democracy is happening across this country. investigators are combing through social media posts, surveillance video and mountains of cell phone data receiving 17,000 tips after the release of bolo posters. those charged include that arkansas man spotted sitting at

house speaker nancy pelosi's desk. a west virginia state delegate and an alabama resident who d.c. police say was armed with a military-style semiautomatic rifle and molotov cocktails. investigators are still looking for a pipe bomb suspect, and they're trying to figure out why some intruders were dressed in paramilitary gear carrying zip ties and duffel bags. sources tell abc news law enforcement is working to distinguish between those who followed the pro-trump mob and those who may have been trying to harm vice president mike pence or congressional leaders. the deaths of those five people also under investigation including a trump supporter who was shot and killed along with capitol police officer brian sicknick. no doubt this is a multilayer large-scale investigation. u.s. attorneys across the country are promising to prosecute any capitol rioters who were at that scene and are from their states, whit. >> still a lot of people to track down. kenneth moton for us, thank you so much. we do want to turn now to

more on our breaking news story. the boeing jet that went missing off the coast of indonesia. abc's julia macfarlane joins us with the very latest from london this morning. julia, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, whit. well, the indonesian ministry of transportation has said that a sriwijaya airlines plane that took off from jakarta airport headed to nearby borneo lost contact around 2:40 p.m. local time. it's believed there were more than 60 people on board. a sharp drop in altitude was detected just a few minutes after takeoff. search and rescue teams have been launched now off the coast of jakarta, and debris has now reportedly been found in the water. now, the aircraft is a 737 500. it is not the boeing 737 max that recently returned to service in the u.s. that model jet was involved in a previous fatal indonesian crash that took off from this same airport in jakarta just three years ago killing all 189 people on board.

u.s. were watching, many planning brand-new lessons reflecting on the day's events. one tweeting, so, educators, what are you teaching tomorrow? will it enable your students to think critically, or will it make them resent you years from now when they learn of the truth you didn't tell? >> my first thought was like, all right, how are we going to transition this to the teaching and learning space? >> ocean miracle-morris teaches history and african-american studies at an all black charter high school in washington, d.c. she says not taking the time to discuss the day's events would be doing her students a disservice. morris showing images like these, police presence among the black lives matter protesters compared to the pro-trump rioters. >> immediately my students were in the chat box like completely different. students were simply stating, i can't believe that they allowed these people to bombard and storm the capitol. it's totally unfair. if it were us, we would be shackled. we would be handcuffed. we would be shot down.

this would look completely different. >> reporter: anton shulski, a history teacher, says the incidents at the capitol could be polarizing for some. >> we spend a lot of time on wednesday evening on twitter listening and reading about how other teachers were going to handle, and there are some teach that's said, i can't talk about this with my students. in some cases there are school districts that have put into place basically restrictions on having these kinds of conversations. they don't think it's appropriate. >> reporter: he teaches american history to high school students in colorado springs, colorado. the siege happening during his class. he decided to abandon his original plan and instead watched the riots unfold with his students. his goal -- to bring some context leaving space for his diverse student body. >> we have to listen to what they have to say, and i was also pretty cognizant of knowing the fact that my kids are multiracial, that i wanted to be really careful about providing a safe space for students. >> and this past year has thrown

so much at students and teachers that morris says she believes it's important for parents and care givers to find ways to talk about these events with your kids even when it feels uncomfortable, because it helps them process their feelings and deal with the trauma. eva. >> faith abubey for us, thank you. you know, kids notice all of these things. >> they do. >> no matter how young they seem to pick up on all that. >> it's difficult to explain. even my daughters i had to have different conversations with each one of them. one was old enough to sort of absorb it. the other one wasn't, so tough conversation. >> tough times for parents, no question about it. let's switch gears now and get a check of the weather with rob marciano, our clothed cowboy this morning. good morning to you. >> good morning. i was doing homeschooling yesterday and struggling with the ice storm lessons she was having. got a little refresher course. we take you to madrid, spain, where they had a snowstorm, which is not entirely rare but to get this much was. over half a foot in spots that shut down the railway system and shut down the airport, shut down roadways. this is the largest snowmaker

anxiety, anger, sadness, a lot of distraction. so we asked my friend lama rod owens to come on the show this morning. lama rod is a longtime meditation and buddhist practitioner. he also is the author of the book, "love and rage." lama rod, good morning. i think the title of your book "love and rage" is especially relevant hearing from so many struggling with the idea of generating empathy and compassion for people with whom they disagree. is that even possible right now? >> absolutely, dan. when i am trying to develop compassion for others, i have to begin with developing compassion for myself. i have to tune into what i'm experiencing in the moment, make space for it, take care of it, and then that gives me the spaciousness and the resources to turn my attention outward to maybe consider that other people who are doing things that are really triggering, maybe they're going through something really difficult that they don't know how to deal with.

>> so you talk about checking in with yourself. but what exactly does that entail? how do we accomplish this successfully? >> absolutely. the first step is just turning our attention back into what's happening in our minds, what's happening in our bodies and beginning to name what's arising for us. many people walk through their day, go through their day without actually being able to name what their experiences are. so we can look at our experiences and we can look at some of the things that we're engaged in that we shouldn't be engaged in and then making conscious decisions to invest in activities that are much more restorative and restful for us. >> you advise people to turn to their personal relationships. explain to us why that is your advice. >> absolutely. when we're going through really difficult times, either individually or collectively, we really feel disconnected and isolated, so turning back into relationships with families and

behind the modern proper, joining us now with the pantry staples and the savory recipes you need to prepare the perfect soup. guys, thanks so much for being with us. i love soups in the winter. they just feel good, especially with the cold weather months. holly, i'm curious for you, which soup staples do you think we should stock up on? >> hey, we recommend keeping some chicken stock on hand, and if the box is too expensive or you run out midrecipe like i sometimes do, it's also good to keep some better than bouillon on hand in your fridge. onions keep forever on your countertop, and they're also the base to so many soups. we also recommend keeping beans and some dried pasta on hand, particularly white beans are great in a lot of soups and last, but not least, we recommend all of the canned tomatoes, diced, crushed, whole. they all work beautifully in soups. >> always nice to have just kind of there just in case.

okay, so let's put these staples to use. natalie, what is the modern proper's most popular recipes? >> that's easy. hands down our tortellini soup has been since the day we released the recipe. so i have some going on the stove. and our base is just sausage and onions, which we cook at the same time, and we add in some garlic and i just dump in chicken stock, the canned tomatoes that holly says we always keep on hand and let it simmer for a couple minutes. at the end we'll add in kale, add it at the end because it wilts pretty quickly. and then we're going to go ahead and add our fresh tortellini which you want to add at the end so that it's not super soft. you want it al dente and then we're just going to stir in some heavy cream. >> because cream makes everything better. >> and you're going to give it -- i agree. and then we're just going to give it a quick stir here and then just let it simmer for a couple of minutes, and then you just have this beautiful pot of soup right here ready to go.

>> it smells delicious. holly, let's go to you for the next recipe and talk about a classic everyone loves, some classic chicken noodle soup. >> yeah, this recipe definitely brings back childhood memories to the max. we think that everybody should learn how to make homemade chicken noodle soup, especially in the winter months. some veggies, some chicken stock, some pasta, and our favorite cooking hack ever, the store-bought rotisserie chicken is all you need to make this amazing dish that will feed your family a meal full of flavor, nutrition and love. this dish comes together in under 30 minutes, which is so great, and uses mostly pantry items that i always have on hand. i usually just ask my husband to go pick up the rotisserie chicken and, boom, dinner is done in less than 30 minutes. and for this dish i love making

fresh pasta, but, of course, for the sake of ease, i lean on my pantry items again, and i normally use this dried egg pasta that i keep in my pantry. >> that is amazing, and that rotisserie chicken from the store, that is such a good little hack. natalie, your tortilla soup utilizes all of these pantry i love the idea of having it there, easy to get. >> yeah, another one of our favorites, fan favorites. it's just five ingredients which who doesn't love that, chicken stock, and then our secret ingredient where all the flavor comes from, a can of enchilada sauce, and then we got creamed corn, which you can really use any corn that you have on hand, frozen or just canned regular corn, fire-roasted tomatoes, and then like holly said, shredded rotisserie chicken, and you just dump everything in the pot and you're good to go, and the best part about this recipe is it really is a blank canvas. you can add whatever you want on top, corn tortilla chips,

we are back now with homemade holiday upcycle. hospitalizations if you still have your christmas decorations up, no need to pack them up or toss them out just yet because the crafty lumberjacks dennis and andrew are here with delightful diy ways to reinvent your holiday decor and breathe new life into the old knickknacks. hey, guys, it's good to see you. good morning to you both. let's start with the christmas tree, right? a lot of people have already tossed out the tree but if you still have it, how can you salvage some of the holiday magic? >> yes, we like to get the most out of our tree so we're actually going to be using some of our tree branches and creating an easy pine needle potpourri. really simple. cut off the clippings and gather your branches in a bowl and collect the pine needles, run your fingers through the branch until the needles fall off, mix in some of your favorite spices, you can put in some dried citrus, some essential oils. >> yes, we like to put it in a bowl here to display all winter long, or sometimes we even put

it into a cloth bag, tie it up and throw these in our closet. >> it smells fantastic. i'm looking at it here. and then what about this? i see we got some scraps from the tree and made it into something nice here. what do we got? >> that was just for the pine needle potpourri. >> oh, got it, okay. >> boxes. >> you know, this time of year we have tons of shipping boxes left over from the holidays. it's a great way to use as a storage solution, but you can decorate so it matches your decor. take a box, cut off the flaps and then wrap with rope and a lot of hot glue and finish it off with lining it with some fabric. you'd be surprised what a great storage solution this is and how great it looks for very little money. >> and it's actually really solid too when you put it all together and get your hands on it. marching down the table here, what else do we have? i see at the end we've got spray paint, which our production crew in here was a little nervous about getting me in front of a

spray paint can, and what do we have with the trees? >> yes, well, we're already thinking ahead to valentine's day. you can actually change the color of your bottle brush trees, really simple. you can pop this into a jar or a bowl with a mixture of one part hot water, one part bleach, dip it in until all that color disappears and you end up with something like this. >> yes, and then you could definitely spray paint it but another tip is, fill a jar with some water and some dye, dip your tree in. the longer you leave it in there, the more vibrant it's going to be. pull it out and give it a quick rinse, and you really could customize this for any holiday any time of year. >> yes, and we love this because it's one part craft and one part magic trick. >> there we go. just like that, boom, a new color. and, yeah, doing it with the dye and dipping it probably a little safer especially indoors and with the kids. dennis and andrew, thank you so much. happy new year to you. i know dan harris will be excited. he just launched his new profile

the sun dance film festival is coming to san francisco, sort of. san francisco's historic roxie theater was selected as one of 30 presenters for this year's festival. happening simultaneously across the country, a first for the festival, which normally takes place in park city, utah. the special screening theaters take place january 28th through february 2nd outdoors at fort mason since indoor theaters are still not allowed. tickets are on sale right now. a row boat that's endured hundreds of days on the open ocean is up for sale. lia ditton rode alone for 86 days from san francisco to hawaii last year in this boat. the chronicle reports she's selling it for $48,000. her goal is to row solo across the pacific ocean from japan to san francisco. she hopes to set sail in 2023 but she will need a newer, lighter boat. pretty incredible. lisa, let's get a check of the weather.
