couplesy. this is the only mass vaccination site in the bay and it is looks pretty popular. going to be a success. look at the line of people who showed up for a vaccine. this is the san mateo county event center. only open to healthcare worker or assisted living facility residents. one county supervisor says he would like to see one to two thousand people vaccinated here a day. he knows that's bold but that is what we need right now. >> we want to end covid simply and to get this economy stimulated. and the only way that we're going to do that is rolling out this vaccine. >> and can other counties figure how to do this? officials in alameda county are expected to vote this week about launching a drive through vaccine site at the oakland coliseum parking lot. the oakland athletics are involved t baseball team.

and state and local health officials are all in talks to launch the site. that vote is scheduled for friday. no word when this would open but back here in san mateo. this site is expected to be open for the rest of the week. live in san mateo. amy holly field. >> thanks amy. contra costa county setting an aggressive goal. they want to vaccinate 7,000 people per day. health officials are working towards phase one bar tier one. educator, child care workers and everyone over the age of 75. >> i'm just happy to be getting it. where millions of people aren't right now and they really need to. >> most people in contra costa will be notified for their healthcare provider for their vaccination. they will need to vaccinate 725,000 people to achieve herd immunity and hope to do that in the next six months. on the website you can get an idea when you will be able to get the shot.

abc7news.com. this morning the bay area's icu availability is at its lowest ever. it is just 0.7%. and we want to remind you that doesn't mean that there are no beds availale. it means that the bay area's hospitals are in saurj capacity mode. now, in the south bay san jose regional medical center is struggling with a shrinking icu capacity. public health officials say the only reason hospitals are not overflowing into the parking lot is because of the non covid patients they are turning away. >> our icu is full. we are in overflow settings. the majority are covid. and the majority in the icu setting are on ventilators. we've found hallway spaces that we didn't know existed. >> there is some good news though. the number of new covid patients is slightly level off since the postthanksgiving surge. but officials say the real

our abc7 news app. >> this as the bay area, california and the country continue to battle with the virus. more more than 376,000 americans have died and the u.s. is averaging a little more than two people dying every minute. 30,000 people have died in california. and you can see on the right there was only a 6% increase in hospitalizations over the past two weeks. the governor does say that is one of the is smallest bumps that we've seen in some time. governor newsom just updated the state's strategy to try and fight through california's vaccine backlog. cdc data shows that our state is 43rd nationwide, including washington, d.c. when it comes to administering the vaccine per 100,000 people. governor newsom wants to expand the list of people who can give the shot to include farmists, dentists, national guard teams and more. >> fire agencies and nursing schools will be essential and critical.

sight now it is a vaccination site. take a look. it was popular yesterday. people lined up to get this vaccine here in san mateo county. at the san mateo county event center. this is the first massive vaccine site in the bay area. san francisco does not even have one. although san francisco general hospital is trying to expand its vaccine site. it is now dedicated the fourth floor of the hospital to administering vaccines. >> just having a large space is not the answer by itself but it is part of it. and the design of the space getting lots of people in and out in an efficient manner is important. >> reporter: at the san mateo site officials are hoping to vaccinate 1-2,000 people a day. they know that is a bold goal but say that is what we need right now given the slow rollout. think about this. out of all the vaccinations california's received. we've only administered 31%. the other 69% are still sitting in the cooler.

ape. two bay area organizations are planning to stop using covid-19 tests from the start-up curative. the fda warned they could provide false negatives. this just one day after los angeles county stopped using the tests at a popup site like this one. and now the sf examiner is reporting that san francisco unified school district is pausing its pilot program with curative. sonoma county's health department also ended its partnership with the start-up. now developing vaccines for viruses that will long been thought uncurable. if pharmaceutical company believes its mrna technology could help to prevent hiv and the knee pa virus. these viruses scientists say have alluded traditional vaccin efforts and human trials on moderna's hiv vaccine expected to begin later this year. >> a san francisco tech ceo has
