starting tomorrow safeway pharmacists will begin v vaccinating 5,000 health ca wo at the sonoma key fair grounds. the goal is to vaccinate the public as well. they help that begins by early february. we are learning college of san mateo will become a vaccines center though not clear when. yesterday the county opened a drive-through clinic the san mateo county event center. >> late today governor newsom tweeted he is asking the work groups to consider broadening our priority groups to people age 65 years and older as soon as possible. the governor making those comments in reference to the cdc today expanding covid vaccination guidelines to everyone older than maun m a eveou peos citizen. abc7 news reporter wayne freedman on the proposed change as the county today ramped up its vaccination effort. >> reporter: a two-minute wait

been shipped to the state but only 26% have been used. that's down from 31% reported yesterday according to data the state updated last night. good news. the abc7 news i-team is prompting the state and several counties to recruit more help. stephanie sierra explains how. >> this is a huge, huge relief. don't cry much, but i have had some healthy cries of being grateful. >> reporter: janice came to us with a problem. >> we have the students out there ready to work, ready to help. >> reporter: as the interim nursing director for the college of san mateo, or csm, she oversees 100 students who are qualified and ready to help administer vaccines. but over the past four months she got no answer from both the county and the state. >> just don't hear back. >> reporter: following our story, that's changing. >> that little push got everybody's attention. it got the ball rolling and i really believe that was instrumental. and i'm really grateful.

>> reporter: nursing students in san mateo county will now be able to help administer vaccines. the plan is to have csm become the next mass vaccination site in the county. she hopes to have 10 to 15 vaccination stations inside the school's auditorium to allow for at least 1,000 doses to be administered per day. i asked the governor yesterday if he would consider it statewide. >> yeah, in fact, enthusiastically so. our fire agencies and our nursing schools will be essential and critical. >> reporter: secretary mark ghaly agreed. >> this is a perfect way to match both that experience as well as a way to support the state. >> reporter: dr. sharon gold far be, the president of the california association of associate degree nursing, would are eid it will be all talk. >> we want it more than a sound bite. we want to see the students helping out. we really want to know the details like how, what, where, when, who. >> reporter: we have some additional questions. so we kept pushing the

california departmenake it a priority? the state told us in an email they are looking into it. meantime nursing programs at santa rosa junior college in sonoma county and deanza college are allowing students to started energy vaccines. san mateo county is expected to review plans for the site on friday. if approved, it will open next week. in the meantime, with he will stay on this story until we see results in every bay area county, pushing to get nursing students involved in vaccinations. stephanie sierra, abc7 news. dozens of ucsf doctors haveg for california schools to reopen by february 1st. as matt boone explains, that is being met with pushback from some teachers unions. >> we don't have much time.

the doses shipped here. our vaccine tracker also shows you when you might be able to get the vaccine in california. you can find this on our home page at abc7news.com. in the south bay hospitals are dealing with icu capacity problems. now they are running out room in their morgues. health officials say three morgues are out of space while four others are nearing capacity. the county brought in three refrigerated trailers to expand capacity. health officials also updated the vaccine rollout saying the goal is to give 13,000 dose as day. but they are fay facing several challenges. >> state and feld guidance is a major issue. every other day we seem to get a different message from the state or the federal government and, again, trying to figure out what it even means and how we can then pivot. >> supervisors passed a measure today requiring health cavidehe with their vaccination plans and the number of vaccinations they administer. health officials have a goal of

vaccinating the majority of people in santa clara county by august 1st. a covid-19 testing facility rolled not east bay today. this medical clinic on wheels is called bus test express. it launched this morning in berkeley on allston way. the staff tested members of the homeless population and people who made reservations. each bus is customized with state-of-the-art medical equipment and can provide up to 500 tests per day. >> the difference between a tent in our company is we have wifi, electricity, we have cold storage for vaccinations eventually and for the testing kits. >> bus test express travels to sites all across california. you can find one tomorrow in berkeley at berkeley bowl on oregon street. testing is free. still ahead, making the case to recall governor newsom. the risky line of reasoning as backers try to connect to the

breaking news now. vice president mike pence has told house speaker nancy pelosi he opposes invoking the 25th amendment against president trump. in his letter he says he doesn't think it's in the best interest of the nation or consistent with the constitution. he also said, quote, i urge you and every member of congress to avoid actions that would further divide and inflame the passions of the moment. tomorrow morning the house of representatives is expected to begin considering the article of impeachment they filed against president trump yesterday and an impeachment vote could happen tomorrow, too. the california democratic party is speaking out for the first time against a growing campaign to recall govno

newsom. abc7 news anchor liz kreutz looks at the effort underway to discredit the petition drive than 1 milonignatures. orter: t recall the governor are gaining steam and democratic party officials seem to know it. at a press conference today they launched a new effort aimed at des crediting the petition saying there is a connection between the recall campaign and those who stormed the u.s. capitol. >> this recall effort, which really ought to be called the california coup, is being led by right-wing conspiracy theorists, while nationalists, anti-vaxxers and groups who encourage violence on our democratic institutions. >> reporter: democratic party chair rusty hicks was joined by san francisco assembly member david chui and other loaders. they made claims that neo-nazie recall kairm but didn't provide any evidence. we sent a follow-up request for examples and has not heard back.

a couple of sfrinprinkles movin through. don't be surprised if you see or feel a few raindrops out there. the atmospheric river is in the pacific northwest. they are expecting additional rainfall and some snow as well. over an inch expected the next two days in portland and seattle. unfortunately, we are not expecting any measurable rain here in the bay area. high surf advisory remains up. that storm is kicking up the surf, so the 14-foot waves right now point arena, that will continue to early afternoon tomorrow. large breakers 20 to 30 feet, especially in favorite areas. rip current risk and sneaker wave risk is there. definitely watch out. as you look at the wave forecast notice the waves remain large until tomorrow afternoon and then by tomorrow evening they really start to come down. so at least that's good news. a lovely view from our east bay hills camera tonight as we pan around showing you a little peek of the post-sunset sky. 56 in san francisco, 58 in
