incitement of insurrection. it comes one week to the day after that deadly assault on the capitol. unlike the last impeachment, ten republicans joined the houses 222 democrats to achieve the simple majority needed to impeach. last week there was a domestic threat at the door of the capitol and he did nothing to stop it. that is why with a heavy heart and clear resolve i will vote yes on these articles of impeachment. >> so what happens next? while the house has the power to impeach, it is the senate that holds a trial and can ultimately remove trump from the presidency if that trial happened before his term ends, potentially barring him from ever seeking office again. senate leader mitch mcconnell says tonight he will not bring the senate back early. that means the trial could start just as president-elect biden is being sworn in next week. >> good evening, thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama daetz.

in just one week president-elect joe biden will be sworn in as our nation's next president. the ceremony will take place amid heightened security following last week's attack on the capitol. tonight 2,000 heavily-armed national guard troops are already securing the area. these striking images show them lining the grand halls and resting between shifts, a sight we haven't seen since the civil war. defense officials say up to 20,000 could be in the city by inauguration day. >> now, it comes as abc news has learned authorities are monitoring up to ten events organized by demonstrators coming back to washington, that some are calling a week of siege. one event planned to, quote, capture and detain democratic politicians and set up a new government. >> in a video released after the vote, president trump made no mention of impeachment and took no responsibility for the attack, but he is giving his most froorceful condemnation of the violence yet and warning against new threats. >> mob violence goes against

everything i believe in and everything our movement stands for. no true supporter of mine could ever endorse political violence. if you do any of these things, you are not supporting our movement. you are attacking it and you are attacking our country. we cannot tolerate it. >> many california lawmakers spoke out on the house floor today in the impeachment proceedings. as expected every democratic representative from california voted to impeach the president. >> capitol police were spit on, beaten, stampeded and one of them lost their lives. i'm not asking you to summon the courage that they did. i'm just asking you to do your job and hold the president accountable. >> the gentleman's time has expired. >> hospital gop leader kevin mccarthy said the president bears responsibility for last week's attack at the capitol but impeachment is not the way. >> most americans want neither inaction for retribution. they want durable, bipartisan

the pandemic. the deadliest 24 hours in the united states, 4,327 lives reported lost in 24 hours. think about this, that is one every 20 seconds. but there is some hope, new hope tonight regarding the vaccine. tonight johnson & johnson says its one-shot vaccine is showing promising results with minimal side effects in an early phase study. the company could apply for emergency authorization by the end of the month. in ohio, scientists discovering two new variants that developed right here in the united states. officials say one strain spreading in the city of columbus could be more contagious, but they need more data. >> we're not ready to overreact. we want to make sure we study these in the lab, we get really good data. so far we know our vaccines are likely effective against this variant. >> meantime, pharmacy giants are ramping up for the wider roll out. cvs says it soon will be able to administer 1 million votes of covid-19 vaccine per day and walgreen's expected to

administer 30 million doses of vaccine by the end of summer. >> so some encouraging news obvious. scientists are careful when discussing the two new variants in ohio. they're not exactly sure what the varniants will do or if one is more transmissible. they say it is too early to tell. california health officials took a dramatic step today saying they will allow anyone 65 and older to receive the vaccine. bay aero fishes srea officials happen right away. >> we are trying to fill up a lake with a garden hose right now. >> "abc 7 news" reporter kate larson heard from concerned seniors in the bay area and spoke to a public health expert about the struggle to get people vaccinated. >> i want to get mine sooner or later, and for me sooner is best. >> reporter: 86-year-old walnut creek resident hugh ferguson is confused why he hasn't gotten the vaccine when government newsom said people 20 years his junior are eligible.

>> it seems every time i get it i'm sent aside say ing we'll ge back to you or call next week. >> reporter: all of you, our viewers, send daily e-mails. others older than 75 wondering how and when to sign up. vickie and bob in pleasanton are 77 and 81 and cannot find where to go to get vaccinated. >> people who are frustrated, i can understand that. i'm trying to figure out where i'm going to get vaccinated. >> reporter: the doctor with the uc berkley school of public health explained why sorting out vaccination responsibility is complicated. >> if you are a school teacher in san francisco but you live in oakland, whose job is it to vaccinate you? is it the county of san francisco where you work? it is the school teacher's union, is it your private health care provider, is it alameda county because you live there? >> reporter: ucsf sent patients an e-mail wednesday night saying they will vaccinate primary care

patients 75 and older in coming days. they say a centralized vaccine clinic is managing distribution and not to contact your doctor for an appointment. sutter called and said patients 75 and older can book vaccine appointments through their my health accounts. they said late thursday morning they will have a phone line open to book the vaccine appointments starting as soon as the afternoon. i'm kate larson for "abc 7 news". in the north bay sonoma county officials are calling it a historic day, the opening of the county's first drive-through covid-19 vaccination clinic. today safe way pharmacists gave the initial dose of the moderna vaccine to the first of more than 5,000 in-home health care workers at the fair grounds in santa rosa. county officials say the drive-through effort is a model for the effort that will be rolled out across the state. >> there is an urgency to get this out there, but we also know we want to make it as safe as possible and we want to make people as comfortable as

possible. >> i'm happy that it protects me, but the last thing i would want would be to pass it on to somebody else. >> at the end of today's clinic there were about 17 doses leftover. safeway pharmacists put out the call to at risk seniors to come down and get a shot. new developments tonight. u.s. safety investigators are issuing a serious warning about electric vehicle fires, saying the batteries pose a major risk

to first responders. "abc 7 news" reporter j.r. stone has more on the effort to compel automakers like tesla to do more. >> reporter: you may have previously seen this video from 2020 in pleasanton, that of a tesla vehicle on fire and burning for several hours. now an ntsb report detailing four electric vehicle battery fires from 2017 and 2018 and a message to automakers urging them to improve electric vehicle emergency response guides for first responders when they're battling flames like this. >> it is concerning moving forward, but not in a frightening way. >> reporter: lieutenant jonathan baxter of the san francisco fire department says the department has implemented special training to learn how to fight these lithium-ion battery fires that happen in electric cars. baxter says they are using thermal imaging cameras, and those from tesla have trained their firefighters to deal with these batteries that sometimes

reignite. >> i mean the batteries continue to generate heat. >> reporter: that was in 2018 when it took crews six hours to get one of the battery fires out. lieutenant baxter says there is certainly concern out there over these battery fires, but his department and others have adapted. >> some of them will be reactive to water in the negative way and in some cases the best defense is to wait it out. >> reporter: in certain cases water is sprayed at special angles like this, but the ntsb is urging auto companies to do more. we did reach out to tesla to get their take, but they did not respond to us. j.r. stone, "abc 7 news". one more note to button this up. the i-team's dan noyes has exclusive reports about safety issues involving tesla vehicles. he has done a number of reports. you can find those on our website, abc7news.com. a legendary lgbtq activist in san francisco has died. ken jones was an african-american gay activist
