more military troops in place to protect the capitol than are currently deployed in the war zones of iraq and afghanistan. >> let that sink in. more are there in d.c. than abroad. donald trump on track to be the first former president to stand trial in the senate because the u.s. senate is on break and return on tuesday which is the earliest that the house can send the article of impeachment for the senate to consider. we know the next day is the inauguration. that would be the first day the senate impeachment trial could begin in earnest. mary bruce starts us off with the latest on the showdown and what's next. good morning, mary. >> reporter: robin, good morning. well, this was impeachment on warp speed and now donald trump is facing one final massive political test, even as he is leaving office. we saw those ten republicans break in the house. the big question now, will the cracks in the gop be enough to convict trump? >> he must go. he is a clear and present danger to the nation that we all love. >> reporter: this morning with just six days left in the white

house, president trump is waking up as the only president in u.s. history to ever be impeached twice. >> the resolution is adopted. >> reporter: the most bipartisan impeachment ever, ten republicans joining democrats to charge the president with incitement of insurrection for encouraging the mob that attacked the capitol and doing nothing to stop it. one week after the president's supporters stormed congress, republican dan newhouse declaring the president had no excuse for his actions. >> last week there was a domestic threat at the door of the capitol, and he did nothing to stop it. that is why with a heavy heart and clear resolve, i will vote yes on these articles of impeachment. >> reporter: the defection led by the number three republican in the house, liz cheney. she didn't speak out on the floor, but she did give her colleagues cover saying there has never been a greater betrayal by a president of the united states. most republicans were unwilling

to defend the president's actions, arguing instead that impeachment would further divide the country. even republicans who just last week voted to overturn the election results now calling for unity. >> president trump will be leaving in seven days. this will only bring up the hate and fire more than ever before. >> reporter: democrats furious. >> a police officer was killed, and what i hear is time to heal. he's not even buried yet. >> reporter: insisting that in order to unite the country the president must be held accountable. >> is there little time left? yes. but it is never too late to do the right thing. >> reporter: over and over again democrats placing the blame for the deadly riots squarely on the president. >> who do you think sent them here? >> reporter: in his harshest rebuke yet, kevin mccarthy agreeing with democrats, saying trump is responsible.

>> the president bears responsibility for wednesday's attack on congress by mob rioters. he should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding. >> reporter: but opposing impeachment arguing for censure instead. the president has still shown no remorse and taken no responsibility for the actions that led to his impeachment. >> we're going to walk down to the capitol because you'll never take back our country with weakness. >> reporter: overnight offering his strongest condemnation yet of the violence. >> no true supporter of mine could ever endorse political violence. no true supporter of mine could ever disrespect law enforcement or our great american flag. >> reporter: but he had no response to his second impeachment. a trial in the senate could now start as soon as january 20th, inauguration day and could dominate the early days of joe biden's administration. the president-elect calling for

the senate to deal with their constitutional responsibilities on impeachment while also working on the other urgent business of this nation. so we're in a situation where the incoming president is going to be trying to get to work just as the outgoing president is being put on trial in the senate. now, as for whether they will have the votes to convict, the republican leader mitch mcconnell is going to be setting much of the tone. he is still an open question. we know he thinks trump committed an impeachable offense, but he told his members he hasn't made a final decision yet on how he will vote which means of course, that the republican leader mitch mcconnell may be open to convicting president trump. george? >> mary, thanks very much. let's bring in jon karl and cecilia vega. cecelia, let me begin with you. the president hunkered down yesterday watching television finally putting out that video where he spoke about the violence. >> reporter: yeah, he did. we heard mary say there it's among his most forceful condemnations of violence yet. he said mob violence goes against everything he believes.

but you heard mary say he took no personal responsibility for his role in the insurrection. the video came out a week after the insurrection. the insurrection that, of course, he incited. and he does not do anything to talk about the impeachment at all. so also i'm told this video came after his legal team had brought up the possibility that he could be facing some legal jeopardy for his role in that insurrection. so what's next? i'm told there have been conversations among the small group of aides and allies that remain around him right now about what he could be doing next step, his option going forward. when it comes to resignation, the president asked questions of this group about resignations but ultimately he decided this was a nonstarter and i'm told it's because he doesn't trust mike pence would actually pardon him in that. he also asked about the possibility of him showing up in person to testify in this senate hearing. aides talked him out of that and we're told also, george, that rudy giuliani has been seen around the west wing a lot and he will take the lead in that

legal defense. >> give everybody a sense of how strange things are inside the white house now. >> reporter: oh, george, it's beyond strange. the president is furious. he watched tv yesterday. he was livid by what he saw. he feels like he's being betrayed by allies like kevin mccarthy. he's so alone and his business empire is taking a hit. aides have quit. cabinet members quit. it's so bad. he's so miserable i'm told people who are left in the west wing, george, are doing everything they can to stay away from him and the oval office, and don't want to have any face-to-face contact. >> cecelia, thanks. jon karl, cecelia just said one of the reasons he's mad that speech by kevin mccarthy, the house republican leader against impeachment but tough on the president, even more troubling for the president that position of mitch mcconnell. >> reporter: yeah, and take mccarthy first. this was a significant moment for donald trump and really a sign of his isolation. kevin mccarthy is somebody who has been incredibly close to donald trump. they speak virtually every day. that's gone. mccarthy bluntly saying that donald trump bears responsibility for that riot calling on him to publicly acknowledge that he bears

responsibility for that riot. a very strong speech from mccarthy and then you have mcconnell coming out, not ruling out impeachment. and, george, conviction on impeachment, if mcconnell takes that step and mcconnell would actually go forward and vote to convict donald trump, i think there is a very real possibility that you would get 67 votes overall in the senate to actually convict him by that two-thirds majority. >> it will depend on what other news comes out before the trial. and jon, to reflect on donald trump and the republican party at this point, they've lost control of the house and of the senate. deep divisions right now. >> reporter: incredibly deep divisions. look at liz cheney who came out and said that donald trump's betrayal of the constitution was greater than any other president ever. liz cheney immediately started to face blowback and you saw more republicans criticize liz cheney and even call for her to be purged from republican leadership in the house than you saw vote for donald trump's

impeachment. a real sign of how deep that division is among republicans. >> jon, thanks. let's bring in chief legal analyst dan abrams. dan, give everybody a sense of what a defense of donald trump might look like in that senate trial. seemed more than anything a due process defense. you can't have a snap impeachment this quickly. >> right. you're going to hear snap impeachment without due process. you'll hear can't convict after he's left office and you're going to hear doesn't rise to the level of incitement of insurrection as defined by federal law. of course, you'll hear democrats respond to that saying he absolutely can be tried after he leaves and you don't have to abide by the specific words of the federal law. they'll look more broadly at everything that has happened since the election day. >> and the democrats, what you heard from them yesterday clear and present danger. that's what they believe donald trump is even though he only has six days left in office and that they really had no choice given the severity of what happened last week.

>> yeah, that's their position, and i think it is going to be very important what happens in this next six days. when you ask the question can he get convicted? will those republicans actually do it? i think in part it's going to depend on what happens. if he engages in self-pardons and tries to pardon sort of random people who didn't deserve it, et cetera, i think all of that, while not specifically relevant to the impeachment, could become relevant in the determination which is ultimately a political one. >> absolutely, dan abrams. thanks very much. michael? >> all right, thank you, george. the nation is on high alert after that siege as thousands of national guard troops patrol the capitol. our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas joins us now with more. in the battle ground state, authorities are more -- most concerned about right now, good morning, pierre. >> reporter: michael, good morning. the new intelligence assessment is blunt. last week's mob attack on the capitol appears to be inspiring

far right radicals to plan more violence. this morning, nation on alert. with authorities fearing the potential of violence is rising, not only at the inauguration in the nation's capital but in all 50 states. >> there's a major security threat and we are working to mitigate those threats. >> reporter: along with d.c., a most concerned, statehouses in minnesota, michigan, wisconsin and pennsylvania. the fbi also warning that right wing radicals see the january 6th capitol assault as a success and now different groups are coordinating. abc news has learned that the fbi is tracking two men who were part of last week's capitol mob who are allegedly planning to come back for another attack on the nation's capital on inauguration day. one suspect from north carolina was allegedly observed loading ammunition boxes and was in possession of semiautomatic rifles, explosives, a gas mask and bulletproof equipment. 20,000 national guardsmen will be on duty for the inauguration. and security is amped up at

d.c.'s airports and hotels. airbnb canceling reservations in d.c. for inauguration week. >> we have asked americans not to come to the washington, d.c. event. >> reporter: now new details about just how serious law enforcement officials say the ongoing threats are. cleveland meredith was arrested in d.c. last week, allegedly sent text messages threatening to execute nancy pelosi and d.c. mayor bowser. according to prosecutors meredith was found with multiple firearms and more than 2,500 rounds of ammunition. the fbi is under incredible pressure monitoring scores of suspects as we head down the stretch to the inauguration. we're going to review this morning in the time just before the election until now, there have been 18 suspects arrested and charged for allegedly plotting to kill or kidnap democratic leaders and their supporters. robin? >> 18. all right, pierre, thank you. we turn to the other major

story, the latest on the covid-19 emergency. the u.s. reporting more than 10 million people have received their first dose of the vaccine. that's out of the 29 million doses that have been distributed so far. this as more vaccine megasites are gearing up to help. stephanie ramos has the latest. >> reporter: this morning, a stark new warning in the battle against covid-19. a white house coronavirus task force report obtained by abc news stating nearly all metro areas over 500,000 persons are in full resurgence. more people dying from the virus in the past week than who died from the flu last year. in massachusetts we got an inside look at a field hospital re-opened at a convention center to handle the surge of patients. there is an entire operation set up on this convention floor. patient rooms set up throughout to treat more than 200 covid patients. the vaccine rollout slowly ramping up. mass vaccination sites opening including yankee stadium in new

york and disneyland in california. >> today, for many people getting vaccinated, it is truly the happiest place on earth. >> reporter: throughout the country only 10.3 million people have received the first dose of the vaccine. just 10% of the prioritized population and only 3% of the entire country. in mississippi, the department of health says it has now committed their entire vaccine supply, and they're not expected to get more until next month. new york city also running low. >> we will run out of vaccine at some point next week unless we get a major new resupply. >> reporter: california and new jersey opening up vaccinations to people 65 and over. new jersey offering the vaccine to those with pre-existing conditions including smokers. >> smoking puts you at significant risk for an adverse result from covid-19, and there are 2 million smokers in new jersey that fit into this category. >> reporter: and now a new concern. researchers at ohio state university identifying two new variants here in the u.s. that are not related to international

♪ i got life ♪ welcome back to "gma." that's a live look at the capitol right now after yesterday's historic second impeachment of president trump, the first president ever to be impeached twice. all the house democrats, a record ten republicans charged trump with insurrection against the u.s. government after the riot last week put d.c. and all 50 state capitols on the highest of alerts. >> we'll continue to have much more on that coming up. we continue with the abc news exclusive. jacob blake and his first interview since he was shot and partially paralyzed by a police officer in august. and since then, the kenosha county district attorney announced last week the officers involved will not be charged. and, michael, we know you had a chance to sit down with jacob. >> i had a chance to sit down with him on tuesday, robin.

jacob blake is a 29-year-old black man who was shot seven times by a white officer in front of two of his children leaving him partially paralyzed, and this morning, he's telling his side of the story for the first time. you didn't resist. >> i resisted to getting beat on and what i mean by that is not falling, not letting them put their hand on my neck. that's all i was thinking honestly. >> reporter: this morning, jacob blake is speaking out for the first time, almost five months after being shot seven times by police, leaving him partially paralyzed. >> i was counting down my breath, my blinks. i was like, god, i'm coming. i guess this is it for me. >> reporter: all this unfolding as his sons watched from the backseat of his car. >> i was like, he's shooting me. i couldn't believe it so i kind of sat down in the car trying to do this, put my hands up because i didn't want him shooting in my face or head or nothing. he just kept shooting, kept shooting. >> what's going through your

mind? >> my babies are right here, my babies. so after he stops shooting me, i said, daddy love you no matter what. i thought it was going to be the last -- i thought it was going to be the last thing i say to them. thank god it wasn't. >> reporter: the incident once again sparking protests across the country, adding fuel to a fire that had been burning all summer since the police killing of george floyd. >> i didn't want to be the next george floyd. i didn't want to die. >> reporter: it was august 23rd, and blake was at the house of the mother of three of his children. they were celebrating their son's birthday when an argument broke out between booker and a neighbor. >> i just wanted to get them -- i wanted to leave. my son is inside. tears coming out his eyes and he said, daddy, are you sure?

it's my birthday. i was like, yeah, you know, i was like i'm going -- i'm taking them to the store again, make them forget about all this. >> reporter: as blake prepares to leave, booker calls police. >> what's your emergency? >> i need an officer. jacob blake is here and has keys to a rental that i purchased that i need to take back and he's not trying to release it. >> reporter: police respond to a, quote, family trouble. they're told there's a warrant for blake on domestic violence offenses and sexual assault. what are you doing when they show up? >> at that time i'm walking out. i hadn't done anything. so i didn't feel like they were there for me. >> reporter: blake proceeds to put one of his sons in the car, and that's when he says he felt someone grab his arm. >> took my arm away and human reaction. after i did that, i realized that it was the police and it was like, uh-oh, because when i did that, he slammed me up against the truck. >> before the cop grabbed you, did they say anything to you? >> no. not at all. >> reporter: according to the wisconsin criminal investigation

report, officer sheskey recalled saying, quote, let's talk about this. he said, blake put his child in the car and turned to face him. sheskey said he grabbed blake's arm to put him under arrest and told blake that he had a warrant. they didn't say why they were there? >> uh-uh. they didn't say anything to me. >> did they tell you they had a warrant for your arrest? >> no. >> reporter: a struggle follows, and police believe blake is reaching for a weapon more than once. blake denies this. police deploy a taser multiple times and blake pulls the taser tongs out of his skin. we see you walk away from the officers after they try to grab you. >> i'm rattled, you know. i realize i had dropped my knife. a little pocketknife. so i picked it up after i got off of him because they tased me and i fell on top of him. >> reporter: with an open knife in hand that blake says fell out

of his pocket, he walks around the front of the vehicle towards the driver side door. what are you thinking at that point? >> i'm not really worried. i'm walking away from them so it's not like they're going to shoot me. i shouldn't have picked it up, only considering what was going on. at that time i wasn't thinking clearly. >> you were thinking once you get the knife into the car, you were going to just -- >> throw myself to the ground and, you know, put my arms behind my back because if they did it there and killed me there, everybody would see it. >> reporter: according to the wisconsin criminal investigative report, officer sheskey says blake drove the knife down towards his body. blake denies this. he opens the car door and at that moment sheskey grabs the back of his shirt and starts shooting. you said we can look at the video and the video tells everything. going to be a lot of people who look at the video and say in the video you're walking away from the police. so why didn't he just stop and

do what the police are asking him to do? >> i couldn't hear that. all i heard was screaming, screaming. my ears was ringing so it was all muffled. >> if the police were fighting me, if they were tasing me, i would stop walking away from them and they would have my attention. >> i had not left or tried to run at that point. that when they tased me, i had my hands up. >> reporter: officer sheskey's attorney says blake was given every opportunity to comply, but he chose not to, and insists that, quote, the officers acted according to their training. according to records released in the wisconsin criminal investigation report, in the past blake has been arrested for attempting to flee police and for resisting arrest. these charges were dropped. there are critics who say he's had run-ins with the law in the past. he doesn't deserve sympathy. >> if you're a black person in america and you are not perfect,

and we'll have another update in 30 minutes. you can catch us on our abc news ♪ lately i've been thinking i want you to be happener in ♪ times square is waking up again. people are walking the streets. good morning, everybody. great to have you with us on this thursday morning. so great to have our friend kristin cavallari with us. she is the best-selling cookbook author of "true comfort" and this morning teaching us how to make a nutrition cozy freezer meal. kristin, good morning to you. how are you doing? >> good morning. i'm good. how are you guys? >> we are great. we've happy you're joining us. before we start cooking i want to ask you about something. you're a mom of three. you're in the spotlight and recently you received some criticism or comments on your parenting. so i'm just curious how do you deal with that and how does your family deal with that?

>> yeah, i mean, to be honest, i don't read comments on instagram so i don't catch wind of those comments unless my best friend justin decides to go on and read my comments and respond to people or whatever it is. but, you know, i got to tell you, my oldest son is 8 1/2 and the second i became a mom people have always loved to criticize some of my decisions. i the one area of my life i'm so confident in, i know what a good mom i am and know i'm doing the best for me and my family so it's just noise to be honest. i don't let that stuff affect me. >> >> i know, george. that's a healthy way to look at it. good for you. >> thank you. >> you know what, you also could get it done in the kitchen. you when white chicken chili you'll make for us. this is great for the freezer, you say. >> yes, so this makes a huge batch and it is spicy so this is one meal that my kids will not eat so i do find i'm freezing a lot of it but so it's great.

it is a white bean chili. it has a nice kick. i had avocado oil in my pan and sauteed buy chicken so i'll take poe plan know and hall pain yo peppers since i love spicy and i'll take onions and saute all of this up and i like avocado oil if you're using high heat and good oil for you. so you're going to saute them up until everything is nice and soft which i've already done for you guys. >> thank you. >> the magic of tv which we love so much. so what you'll do is add a bunch of chopped garlic, all of your spices, a little pink himalayan salt and i like pink himalayan salt because it's topped with vitamins and minerals so i don't use anything white, no white flour, sugar or salt. it's been stripped of all its nutrients so what everything

nutrient dense and packed with flavor and i'll add my chilies, my beans and mix this all up in here. you get this going and then you'll take your chicken stock and a little lime juice and squeeze that in there. >> kristin, kristin, do you see -- i'm sorry. i'm eating. it's delicious, by the way. do you recommend -- >> are you eating the chili? >> absolutely. not putting all the spices -- >> i can't see you. >> not to put all the spices in at the same time to kind of layer it. >> i like to build the flavor. i had a chef years and years ago who really taught me everything i know about cooking but he was the one who told me you want to build your flavors so you want to throw everything in at one time. so that's kind of the trick there and then a little citrus at the end to cut it. kind of balance everything out and find it gives it a slight

tangy flavor. you would cook it until it thickens up then i have mine over here so let's see. hopefully you can see all of this. then i like to garnish with chopped avocado and cashew crema. cashew crema i love, it's dairy free but resembles sour cream, it thickens it up and gives it that creamy added texture. a dollop. >> a dollop will do you. >> a dollop. >> this is really good. >> yeah, so you can definitely, you know, you can take a little container, fill up whatever you don't eat, put it in the freezer for four to six months. it makes life so much easier if you have kids or running around. so, yeah, this is a great meal. >> sounds like one of those dishes that gets real good
