are facing right now is the availability of vaccine. >> we've got to increase the pace and distribution in the administration of these vaccines. >> for many people operation warp speed is now in the slow lane. good evening, i'm dan ashley. >> sorry about that, dan. i'm ama dates. thank you so much for joining us. making matters worse is despite a prom from the federal government there appears to be no more reserve doses to release. all of this added for tough questions today. abc 7 reporter melanie woodrow is in the newsroom and starts our coverage tonight. >> reporter: governor gavin newsom says the state is on pace to receive its goal of 1 million vaccinations in ten days. the governor says the state is not the source. california has received 3 million doses of the covid-19 vaccine as of yesterday according to governor gavin newsom. to date the governor says 1.88 million doses have been

administered. yet bay area counties and hospitals say they don't have enough. many are demanding answers from the state. >> it is a little per plexing as to why certain counties in and some way california as a whole is being left behind here. >> reporter: today governor newsom took on those tough questions at dodger stadium where he and mayor garcetti launched a vaccination site. >> the state of california has received not one dose of the vaccine. the state of california doesn't directly administer the vaccine. that's done through a network of providers. >> reporter: governor newsom says there are 3,500 partner providers in california distributing the vaccine. >> our resolve is to get all of the existing doses that are in this state administered as quickly and efficiently as possible. >> reporter: san francisco district 6 supervisor matt haynie says california needs to do better. >> what's been a mess so far even if we're waiting for

additional vaccines to come, people should have ways to get information. there should be transparency. there should be registration links on all the county websites. and there should be a clear plan for mass distribution of this vaccine as soon as we get additional doses. >> reporter: governor newsom said the state looks forward to substantially improving and increasing its effort in the days, weeks and months ahead. the governor was asked how many more doses the state has ordered. he says the state anticipates receiving hundreds of thousands of more doses. in the newsroom, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. >> melanie, did the governor address concerns of people not being able to get their second dose in. >> that was a question today and the governor did take that question. he said there should be no issue with people getting those second doses of the vaccine. ama? >> all right, thank you, melanie. >> now to the question of vaccine availability and the frustration of seniors in particularly. earlier this week they wrongly assumed that they could get into line for shots immediately. well, the reality has been much

more complicated than that. abc 7 reporter wade freeman has more. >> reporter: it was the best of news for anyone over 65. >> one of the most significant things we can do is increase the people eligible to administer or rather to receive the vaccine. >> reporter: that was the promise from governor gavin newsom on wednesday. but as of now here's the reality. >> if you are calling about covid vaccine, we are unable to schedule a covid vaccine appointment right now due to limited availability. >> reporter: that was the kaiser permanente line this morning after they stopped putting people on hold for vaccine appointments. >> two hours, a little over two hours. >> so i was cooking dinner and then we ate dinner. i played with my cat. i was on a 90-minute zoom tiktok, i did my e-mail. >> all this while waiting for an appointment with kaiser. >> yeah, well, i just wasn't

going to sit there and listen to that recording for 4 1/2 hours. >> reporter: they will get vaccinated but weeks from now, and don't blame the medical groups who have been unexpectedly overwhelmed. >> just yesterday we received four times the normal call volume into just one of our call centers. >> the reality is we don't have the supply of doses to match the demand. and we've just increased the demand significantly by expanding the age group. >> reporter: marin county health director blames an absence of information, basic stuff on how much vaccine he'll receive and when. that makes planning difficult, and became more so today when the federal government admitted its promised vaccine reserves do not exist. >> we need more doses, a clear plan where really a lot of us feel like we're fending for ourselves on the state and local level. >> in short we have a case of overpromising and overdelivering. for seniors the hope of shots immediately that now will likely

take months. in marin county, wade freeman, abc 7 news. >> santa clara county is moving forward with its plan to expand its covid-19 vaccination centers despite the uncertainty over supply, a situation they say is primarily the fault of the federal government. for now the county can only accommodate health care workers and those 75 and up. abc 7 news reporter chris winn has the latest from san jose. >> reporter: demand for the covid-19 vaccine is far exceeding the amount available. and in the bay area's biggest county, officials say they continue to be hamstrung by the federal government. >> we learned a few days ago, for example, that the federal government was going to release stockpiles of vaccine that were being held for second doses. we learned this morning no such stockpile exists. >> reporter: santa clara county council james williams says transparency is essential to building public trust, but the process has been anything but easy. >> kaiser and -- are responsible for the majority of santa clara

county residents. the majority of our residents are their patients, and we don't have full visibility into what they're doing. >> reporter: despite the struggle, county officials are moving forward with the expansion of multiple vaccination sites, building out the infrastructure in hopes the federal government will get its act together under a new administration. most residents will receive the vaccine from their primary care provider, but the county has already ramped up capacity to vaccinate over 6,000 people a day with plan tuesday do more once the vaccine supply becomes more stable. >> due the this limited and unp unpredictable supply we continue to limit. >> reporter: stanford health care has stepped up to help providing mutual aid by accepting more than 500 transfers in the past two months alone. as people anxiously await their turn for the vaccine medical providers are once again reminding the public about ways to prevent the spread of covid-19. >> we know how you can protect

yourself. we know that if you maintain social distancing, wear a mask you will be able to protect yourself from this virus. >> our communities' patience being tested in so many ways. in the south bay, chris winn, abc 7 news. >> the colosseum authority met today to talk about turning the oakland colosseum into a mass covid-19 vaccination site. they say they could model it after dodger stadium with vaccinations taking place in the colosseum parking lot. the oakland a's say they're in full support of this plan. currently there are no games scheduled at the colosseum. meanwhile san francisco today announced plans to open three large vaccination sites. the goal is to get as many people vaccinated just as quickly as possible. abc 7 news reporter luz pena is in the newsroom with more on

that. >> the city is aiming to vaccinate 10,000 people a day yet there are so many questions on how this will get accomplished fast and if there will be transparency on how many doses are being administered on a daily basis. after ten months of a pandemic that has ravaged san francisco today there was finally insight into the city's vaccination plan. >> we have a plan. we are moving tnes forward. >> reporter: the plan includes a network of high volume vaccine sites and community based locations in partnership with health care providers. the first site will be located at city college of san francisco's main campus in the ocean view merset heights engelside area. and the third at the san francisco market in the bay view. along with these sites the city also announced a website sf.gov/vaccinenotify. a vaccination notification

website where people can find out when will be their turn to get vaccinated. >> starting on tuesday enter your information, and when it is your turn to be vaccinated you will be contacted with what you should do to make that happen. >> reporter: mayor breed mentioned several times that san francisco has a limited amount of the vaccine. today the department of public health confirmed to abc news that san francisco has received, in fact, 33,975 doses to date. 16,575 of the pfizer vaccine. 17,400 of the moderna vaccine. mayor breed says she will continue to follow the state's guidelines to distribute those doses. >> the federal government and the state are distributing the vaccines. in california the state is giving vaccines directly to health care providers, which includes providers like kaiser permanente, dignity, ucsf and

we have breaking news to tell you about now. oakland police are investigating a deadly shooting near lake merit. this is near grant avenue and perkins street in the adams point neighborhood. police say one person is dead, another was injured. updates on this breaking news on our website abc7news.com and the abc 7 news app. parents and students rallied across california and the bay area this afternoon demanding the governor allow high school sports to resume despite the high number of covid cases and even deaths. >> coaches say there is a way to modify sports to play safely. >> reporter: their demands are straightforward. let high school athletes return to sports. the meeting place was outside the high school which hasn't had

competitive sports since covid forced the closure of the school. the football coach kevin macy says it's been too long. >> the covid concerns are being outweighed. the mental health is now so much more detrimental they're not playing sports. >> reporter: california is one of five states pausing fall sports for high school teams. >> it's heart breaking to see that potentially they had something in high school and they can no longer do that when they go to college. >> reporter: others think the covid numbers are too high to bring back high school athletes. >> i see football players playing out there without any masks, so i get concerned. >> reporter: meanwhile the american academy of pediatrics reported that doctors are concerned that covid has created the perfect conditions for kids to gain excess weight because in part their favorite sports are no longer an option at schools. there have been studies like the one from the university of wisconsin back in october which found that vast state high
