today, it has reached more than a million cases. the highest in any county in the country. the l.a. county continues its trend of at least 100,000 new cases, a week. still, some cautious optimism with the governor saying hospitalizations and positivity rates are still high, the percentage of people tested who have the virus declined over the past seven days. as covid cases surge across the state, bay-area firefighters are getting deployed to hospitals in other regions. all of this is part of a california office of emergency services effort to keep staffing up, at some of the hardest-hit medical facilities. abc 7 news reporter luz pena spoke to firefighters who were sent to bakersfield. >> reporter: bob is working the night shift. this photo was right after intubating a patient in the emergency department. what are you seeing every day? >> well, it's a gambit from regular people coming to the emergency department, to all the way to people on the ventilators. >> reporter: after a 12-hour

shift, steve deck just got to his hotel. >> currently, there is probably 30 to 40 patients on ventilators. basically, the whole second floor, at this hospital, has been converted into an icu. >> reporter: steve arrived to bakersfield a week ago. listen to how he described his first day. >> and right when we walked in the er, there was somebody already in respiratory failure. so it was like, wow, this is it. >> reporter: they are both bay-area firefighter/paramedics, deployed to one of the most stressed hospitals in bakersfield, in a county where covid is surging with more than 84,000 cases and 565 deaths. how would you describe the surge that you are experiencing, down in bak >> i've been an ems for 19 years, now. and i never remember seeing anything like this. >> reporter: these firefighters are equipped with medical traing,inghem a asset inside many emergency rooms. their commitment is for two weeks. >> a big commitment to be gone

far-right media personality, who calls himself baked alaska, arrested in texas saturday. allegedly, spotted on video inside the capitol chanting, patriots are in control. the department of justice opening nearly 300 investigations related to the riots. reena roy, abc news, new york. the state capitol is, also, seeing changes as the chp prepares for the possibility of armed protests. right now, there are no-permitted events at the capitol in sacramento, through wednesday. lawmakers and staffers have, also, been directed, through e-mail, not to go to the building for their safety. massive bare kids haricades havt up and the fbi has established a command post in preparation. they are working with washington, d.c. headquarters to identify anyone who took part in the siege on the nation's capitol. >>aceboo banning ads for gun accessories and military gear, leading up to inauguration day. all of this, comes after a push from senators and facebook employees, in the wake of the u.s. capitol riot.

high. waves and rip currents, you really do want to stay out of the ocean because that current will become very active, tomorrow. and especially, into monday. what will also become active are winds. we are tracking an off-shore wind event. it sounds kind of rare for january. but we are seeing the pattern develop, especially tomorrow night, into monday and tuesday. so, we have a wind advisory in effect for the entire bay area starting at 10:00 p.m., tomorrow, lasting through 6:00 p.m. tuesday. and we are talking about winds gusting anywhere from 15 to 30 miles per hour. close to the valley floor. in our ridge tops, we could see winds gusting over 50 miles p so, futucker win gusts ouo wedsd morning, and you can see those winds really do become active. you can see those wind gusts, over 30 miles per hour. especially, in the north bay. monday, itself, is a pretty breezy, if not gusty, day. and then, another push of off-shore winds develops, early
