color. it would direct the city manager to record covid-19 data by race to track any health disparities, an issue seen nationwide. grappling issues of race and social injustice, we're here to help. plus, take action for a list of local resources. now to the latest in the pandemic, california health officials report more than 40,000 new cases. that brings the state's total to more than 2.9 million. 699 people in california died in one day from the virus. it's the second highest total since the pandemic began. los angeles county announced it has reached 100 million, the highest in the nation. l.a. county continues the trend of 100,000 new cases a week. still some cautious optimism with the governor saying hospitalizations and positivity rates are still high. the percentage of people test who'd have the virus declined over the past several days. hopefully that trend continues,

new details, early results from a testing campaign in mission district shows a 9% positivity rate according to a report from mission local. more than 300 people were tested at the 24th street bart plaza in the last week. latino residents represent 73% of those tested had a 10% positivity rate. this rapid testing site will be opened through january 29th. testing is available every day september thursdays and saturdays. inmates in the santa clara county jail started a hunger strike since the start of the pandemic. on wednesday, the sheriffs office reported 109 new cases in the jail. that night more than 40 inmates started the strike. this is the third outbreak at the jail. inmates say they are protestinga a lk ofpolicy. the district attorney's office is working on early releases that could start next week. and as covid cases start across the state, bay area firefighters are deployed to

other regions as a part of the california office of emergency services effort to keep staffing up at some of the hardest-hit medical facilities. abc 7 news reporter liz penna spoke to firefighters. >> reporter: bob craft was working the night shift after intubateing a patient. >> what are you seeing? >> it's a gambit of people to elevated people on ventilators, after a 12-hour shift he has gone to his hotel. >> apparently, there is probably 30-to-40 patients on ventilators. basically the whole floor of this hospital has been converted into an icu. >> reporter: he arrived to bakersfield a week ago. listen to how he described his first day. >> in the er there is also in respiratory failure. wow, this is it. >> reporter: bay area firefighters deployed to one of the most stressed hospitals in

bakersfield, where covid is surging with 84,000 cases and 565 deaths. how would you describe the surge you are experiencing down if bakersfield? >> i have been an ems for 19 years now and i never remember seeing anything like this. >> reporter: these firefighters are equipped with medical training making them an asset inside many emergency rooms. the commitment is for two weeks. >> it's a big commitment to be gone from home two weeks. at the same time we are trying to balance staffing our vaccination pod here in marin. >> reporter: according to weber this, this region sent 40 firefighters to this pandemic. back home, they're used to seeing each other at wildfires. now they're wearing scrubs and fighting a new fight. >> it's nice to have other fire guys here who are in the same boat, even though they're from different departments, we all come from the same cloth. >> in san francisco, abc 7 news.
