669 people in california died in one day from the virus. that's the second highest total since the pandemic began. los angeles county announced it has reached more than 1 million cases, the highest of any county in the nation. l.a. county continues its trend of at least 100,000 new cases a week. still some cautious optimism with the governor saying hospitalizations and positive rates are high, the percentage of people who tested with the virus declined over the past seven days. new details, early results from a testing campaign in san francisco's mission district shows a 9% positivity rate there. more than 3,000 people were tested at 24th street b.a.r.t. plaza in the last week. latino residents who represent 73% of those tested had a 10% positivity rate. this testing site will be open through january 29th. testing is available every day

except for thursdays arous and saturdays. the santa clara jail started a hunger strike with the largest outbreak. there were 109 cases in the jail. that night 40 inmates started the strike. this is the third outbreak at the jail. they are protesting unsanitary living conditions and lack of policy. the district attorney's office is working on early releases that could start next week. as covid cases surge across the state, bay area firefighters are getting deployed to hospitals and other regions. it's part of a california office of emergency services effort to keep staffing up at some ofrdt . luz pena spoke to firefighters. >> reporter: he's working the night shift. this photo was after intubating a patient in the emergency department. what are you seeing every day? >> well, it's a gamut from

regular people coming to the emergency department to all the way the people on the ventilators. >> reporter: after a 12-hour shift, steve got to his hotel. >> there's probably 30 to 40 patients on ventilators. basically, the whole second floor at this hospital has been converted into an icu. >> reporter: steve arrived to bakersfield a week ago. listen to how he described his first day. >> right when we walked in the e.r. there was somebody in respiratory failure. >> reporter: they're both paramedics deployed to bakersfield in a county where skoefld surging with 80,000 cases and 565 deaths. how do you describe the surge you are experiencing in bakersfield? >> i've been an ems for 19 years now, and i never remember seeing anything like this. >> reporter: these firefighters are equipped with medical training, making them an asset

good to see you. >> good to see you, liz. good to see you virtually. >> i want to ask you about the inauguration, three days away. a lot of people here in the bay area are excited about this given our local connection. are you planning to attend? are you concerned about security? what are what do you expect to happen that day? >> well, certainly, everyone is concerned about security, especially after the horrific events of january 6th. at this moment, the security precautions have been really enhanced. i mean, this looks like i say baghdad west. it's really remarkable. there will be many, many national guard individuals here and different layers of security. but these white supremacists who were determined to enter the capitol in an attempted coup are making their continued threatss,

so our fbi and the security agencies are tracking the chatter, and they're doing everything they can do to make sure it's secure. believe you me, the threats are real. and the threats are real all over the country, especially here at the capital. so everyone is taking every bit of precaution possible. >> just to confirm, are you planning to attend still on wednesday? >> well, i hope to see vice president-elect kamala harris sworn in as our vice president, born and raised in our area, raised in berkeley. it's such a history day, i definitely intend to be there unless we're told that it's not safe. >> right. for sure. going back to the attack at the capitol, more than 30 of your colleagues have signed a letter calling for an investigation into what they're calling suspicious visitors potentially seen touring the capitol the day before the attack. did you see anything like?

do you have reason to believe some of the would-be insurrectionists were inside the capitol the day before the riot? >> i have every reason to believe that. when you look at how the plans were laid out, they knew parts of the capitol they should not have known how to get to. when you look at all the details now coming out, i absolutely believe that there was some co-conspirators on the inside helping this attempted coup to take place. >> given that, do you feel safe at the capitol right now? we heard reports about some lawmakers refusing to go through the new metal detectors. yesterday i heard one of your democratic colleagues say that she wants a bulletproof vest now when she goes to work at the capitol. how do you feel there? do you feel safe? >> well, let me tell you, i'm really pleased, first of all, our speaker made sure that the top command of the capitol police were fired, and that was a good first step. yes, metal detectors are extremely important now because believe you me, we have some

qanon members of congress, members of congress who have said they have carried weapons to the floor, and we have some -- believe me, last week i did see some interact with the capitol police really not wanting to go through the metal detectors. and why do you not want to go through metal detectors? so it's a very dicey situation, and we have to do everything we can do to protect ourselves from those colleagues we have to work with each and every day. >> i want to move on to the pandemic for a second. your thoughts of the impeachment last week. ten republican house members did vote yes. were you happy to see that many or were you hoping for more? >> i wanted to see all of the republicans vote for impeachment because the evidence is there. this president incited violence. he laid the foundation not only recently but throughout his presidency for hostile and angry

responses, and, in fact, he has violated the constitution. no one is above the law, including the commander in chief. so he should be held accountable, and this is the proper process to move forward to hold the president accountable. and for those who voted against impeachment or voted against the sealing of the electoral college, they are complicit with his lies about the election results, which we know biden and harris won. >> so let's talk about the pandemic for a moment, take a break from politics. the vaccinations, there's a lot of chaos and confusion in california right now about how and when to get a vaccine. we know now everybody 65 and older is supposed to be able to get it. there doesn't seem to be a plan in place to make it happen. why do you think california is having such a hard time with our vaccination rollout? >> liz, it's not just california. it's every state. come on. we've been trying to get this trump administration to help us put forth a national testing and

vaccine plan since march. they still have not done that. it takes a partner at the federal government so that the states can move forward with the plan and the roadmap. and when you hold back vaccines, when you say there are reserves when there really aren't reserves, that's another lie that the trump administration has promoted, then it's going to create this kind of chaos. i think that our governor and our state officials are doing the best they can to make sure that everyone gets vaccinated and that it's done in an organized way. when you don't have the federal government as a partner, it's scrambling. we're trying to fix that and thank goodness the biden/harris team have plans on how to do that. i have to say, i got $2.8 billion in this last survival stimulus package, $300 of which are for vaccines for medically underserved communities, black and brown communities that are disproportionately impacted by this virus. that money is going to come

sooner or later, hopefully sooner. we have the other $2.5 billion for contact tracing, testing, and isolation and health care. that's again targeted for racial minorities, ethnic minority, underserved communities that need this help so desperately. but believe me, the states have never had a partner with this administration on this horrific virus. >> so, congresswoman, what is your advice then to someone in your district, 65 or older, wants to get vaccinated? who do they call? what do they do? >> listen i can't give advice in terms of direction, but i can suggest that you call alameda county, because they have health protocols in place and they can get answers in terms of just the plan and how the vaccine will be distributed. remember, it went to the states, then the states have the state plan and the counties have their plans. so please, call your county, but in the meantime, stay masked,

secondly, this is historic. i got involved in politics through the campaign of the first african-american woman to run for the presidency, shirley chisom 50 years ago. i know she'll be carrying shirley around with her. this is long overdue. 50 years later, finally. and senator, vice president-elect harris, brings that perspective of a black woman, a south asian woman, a person of color to the issues. so gender, equity, racial equity and justice, justice for everyone will be part of the overall biden agenda because vice president-elect kamala harris will be there at the table, making sure that those perspectives are part of every decision that's being made. so i think our young girls, our young girls of color should be excited and they should know that they're able to do whatever in the heck they want to do because kamala harris, like

a live look from our santa cruz camera. it looks like two people sitting there enjoying the warm weather this morning. yesterday it was packed, and i have a feeling it might turn out that way again later today. former oakland a's pitcher dave stewart has submitted a bid to buy oakland's share of the coliseum site. the chronicle reports the bid is worth $115 million. he has ideas to develop the site and potentially build a stadium there if plans for a ballpark at howard terminal don't pan out. stewart is from oakland and won a world series with the a's in 1989. in sports, this afternoon, day two of the divisional round of the nfl playoffs. one of the games features san mateo native tom brady and tampa bay against new orleans. yesterday the nfc's other divisional playoff matchup had two quarterbacks with ties to the bay area. here's abc7 sports anchor chris

here's a look at the current winds 1,000 feet. mt. st. helena, 33-mile-an-hour wind gust, oakland hills about 26 miles an hour, and mt. tam nearly 30 miles an hour. mt. diablo has had winds of over 60 miles an hour, so those gusty elevations, the upper elevations, we'll have that wind worked down to the surface. it will do a couple things -- keep us warm, keep the atmosphere premixed for pretty good visibility but also allow for drying out of the atmosphere, reducing the relative humidity. rainfall has been scant so we're looking at not only that but a dangerous surf as well. we have the holiday weekend, gorgeous weather, folks flocking to the beaches, but the conditions need to be watched all over the bay area for the surf and for the potential for fires. upper 50s is where we should be for this time of year. about 74 in livermore. the airport yesterday was 75. so anywhere from about 11 to 20 mid-70s in santa rosa, looking at upper 60s downtown
