her work. >> i am indeed familiar with her work, yes. a little bit. >> jimmy: what was it like when you met oprah for the first time. i remember mine, it was somewhat magical. >> you know what, i would say it was magical too, we were in the middle of a rehearsal for the show and we were singing the last song, the title track of the musical, she walk into the room and everyone burst into tears and for some reason i just got this sort of moment of determination for which i refused to stop singing. i said i will finish this song i will not fail in front of oprah winfrey frid-- and i continued last high note and she gave me this hug so i was singing this high note in her ear as she was hugging me the first time i met her. >> did she get mad? >> no i got a good old squeeze it was wonderful.

>> jimmy: what about the first time you met jason bateman was that equally magical. >> maybe magical in a very different way. it was over the phone. it was -- it was a facetime call, we were talking basket project, the first time i was talking about the project with him about "the outside evoutsid it was strange because it was lovely by the end i really wanted to do the project but couldn't tell if i got the project. we get to the end and he's like consider it. i was like does that mean i have the job or i don't, i don't really know. you go into a spiral. i ask my manager, should i call him or text. he said if i had questions should i text, and the question i had was do i have this job. so she says well if that's the question you have, text him the question. so i did. and then kind of found out that i had it but had to wait for

couple days. >> jimmy: well it worked out very well. this morning you were nominated for critic's choice award for your role in the outside er. >> i was indeed. >> jimmy: the critics are the only ones who really know anything so that's a good one. >> that's a good one to get, i was the last one to find out for sure. >> jimmy: is that right, why were you the last to find out. >> i guess it was totally unexpected so i wasn't even waiting for it, and i woke up this morning and had an e-mail from my mangum -- manager who said congratulations. i was like wonderful. >> jimmy: good thing your manager is clearer than jason is. >> she is very clear, yes. >> jimmy: you are tackling, quite -- i mean, really you're going to play aretha franklin. >> yeah. >> jimmy: who is beyond a legend, obviously, musically, as a figure in american history. >> yeah.

>> jimmy: and you're doing it for nat geo which i think is interesting, tell us about that, what is it that you're doing exactly? >> so it's an eight-part mini series about aretha franklin's life from the 60's through the '90s and it's everything from how she created her music to the life she was living while she was making all of this music and who she was really, yeah. >> jimmy: and the life she was living was an interesting life. >> it is, a very interesting life and she was very private about a lot of it. you're sort of relying on not just her music, what she said but like interviews and pictures, and you put all of the pieces together. she's fascinating and brilliant 1y . >> jimmy: yeah. >> and she went through a lot and made great music through it. >> jimmy: and through the '90s who is zooming who, in that era. >> yeah. >> you do regiona frankl --

>> jimmy: you do the singing? >> i do. >> jimmy: that's something else. nobody sang better than aretha. that's got to be intimidating, i would think. >> yeah, yeah, yeah. it take as you lot of practice. definitely a couple songs i was like i don't know if i could do this but you put the work in and put confidence in yourself and go for it. yeah. i've had amazing help. my vocal coach was wonderful and i love her music since i was a young girl so i'm lucky about knowing the music. >> jimmy: and you sang in oprah's ear so nothing can top that. >> i mean, yeah. >> jimmy: what's the toughest aretha franklin song to tackle? >> so "ain't no way" is tough for most of us, but i love it so i sing it anyway. but the toughest song i had to sing is called "never grow old" it has no time signature and
