congressman eric swallwell joining us from washington, d.c. good to see you. >> thanks for having me back. >>first, tell us what it was like being there at the inauguration today. we just heard barbara lee's reaction as well. it's such a different image of the capitol than we saw two weeks ago. >> i want to frame it as three wednesday. so two wednesdays ago, the capitol was invaded. last wednesday, we impeached the inciter, donald trump, who invaded and incited the invasion of the capitol. and today we renewed our democracy by nothing rating joe biden. but i tell you, it was not ideal. there were thousands of troops, multiple perimeters, and not i tyris the last because of ce inauguration i ever receive multiple text messages from friends and family who tell me be safe. that can't be the way it operates here in america, but a peaceful inauguration was pulled

off, and better days ahead. >> absolutely. thankfully it was peaceful in the end. let's talk about what's next for impeachment, because obviously that is the backdrop of all of this. you're one telephone impeachment manager, meaning you're one of the house members now tasked with arguing this case to the senate. so is this trial going to move forward? and if so, when? >> it is, and the speaker of the house, nancy pelosi, will announce that soon. but it's going to be a unity impeachment. you know, we had the number three republican in the house and double-digit republican support in the house to put this impeachment forward. and we believe as we make the case that the president invited terrorists to washington. aem and told them to storm the capitol, a and did nothing to help the people inside once they did, that we will see a unity conviction, republicans and democrats holding the president accountable, deterring anyone from doi in theutenghis and disqualifying someone who disdains democracy from ever

running again. >> you know, you say it's going to move forward. we haven't gotten that date yet. obviously there is the argument you're going to be distracting from the first few days of the biden administration and everything that biden and congress wants to get done. do you think it will be a distraction? >> well, we're going to have to work harder because there is a covid need, as far as stimulus checks that have to go out and millions of arms that need the shot, the vaccination to go in. so that's the top of mind priority. but i hope i serve with people who can do more than one thing at a time, because we're going to have to. sadly, this conduct by former president trump is not something we can just sweep under the rug. and i do think there is unity in holding him accountable and standing up for the victims of that attack. >> all right. we'll see what happens. i'm sure we'll be checking in with you in the coming weeks as well. thank you, congressman. >> my pleasure. president trump departed the white house in marine one around 5:15 our time this morning.

the former president flew to joint base andrews to give his final speech. the first lady joining him on stage and spoke briefly. >> i wish theew n great luck and great success. i think they'll have great success. they have the foundation to do something really spectacular. >> of course, traditionally, the president stays in d.c. to watch his successor get sworn in. and as we know, mr. trump skipped today's events. looking ahead to 2024. the vice chair of the bay area chapter of the california gop says every transition of power is a time for the losing party to rebuild. he predicts the republican party will also become more diverse over the next few years. >> there is a gradual shift of minorities republican party, realizing that they're far more conservative than people have made them out to be, whether it be financially, whether it be morally, people who take on and

in the south bay, police in milpitas say a 7-year-old boy was hit and killed by a driver in a stolen suv. as abc7 news reporter chris nguyen tells us, one suspect has been taken into custody. another person who was also in that vehicle remains at large. >> reporter: a small bouquet marks the spot where a 7-year-old boy became the victim of a deadly hit-and-run collision in milpitas. >> it could have been any one of us. >> reporter: neighbor recalled the tragedy steps away from her home. >> when things like that happen, yu really can't do much about it. >> reporter: monday afternoon, police say a woman driving a stolen white lexus suv was fleeing police when she hit the boy, who was out riding a bike well his family. this surveillance video shows them attempting to clear the intersection at park victoria

and kennedy drives seconds before the crash. the child was taken to the hospital but died of his injuries. those who live nearby say speeding has been an issue in the area for a lot of years. there is a lot of people running fast, a motorcycles and cars, they don't care. >> reporter: the driver, 36-year-old crystallinea patch chenko was arrested on possession of a stolen vehicle and felony hit-and-run. the police say she ditched the vehicle a mile north of the site and ran off but was eventually caught. but the passenger was able to escape the scene. that person has not been found. the vehicle, which police say was used in an armed robbery at the shoe palace in san jose was later located in newark. >> someone's child and a family member, a human being passed there. >> reporter: a community shaken to its core as the grieving continues. in milpitas, chris nguyen, abc7 news. and now to the coronavirus

pandemic. today california became the first state to top three million total cases ith more than 22,000 new cases in the last 24 hours. the state has 694 deaths reported today. that's the second highest number since the pandemic began. in the bay area, we have had more than 350,000 diagnosed cases since the pandemic began. and san francisco's department of public health announced today that its goal is to vaccinate everyone in the city by june 30th. the declaration came during a special hearing of the board of supervisors, public safety and neighborhood services committee, and one day after mayor breed t of vaccines tomorrow. so far a total of 45,000 doses of the vaccine have been given to city residents. that number doesn't include kaiser and sutter health care patients. committee members blasted the speed of the roll-out so far. >> from the feds to the state to the local level, so far it's been a mess. and we need clarity.

all right, we have the change of leadership. let's talk what this means specifically for the state of california, which battled the trump administration for the past four years on a litany of issue. >> yes, everything from climate change to covid to wildfires around the state. it's been a rough four years for the democrats in california as they battled the administration in washington, but now that's all changed, as we saw with the beginning of the signing of the executive orders on everything from immigration to the requirements for gas on cars, another point of contention between the state. but larry, if politics is brass knuckles, let's get down to it. yes, kamala harris is the vice president. that's great. but the real powerhouse is still nancy pelosi. she is from california. the minority leader in the house is from california. and we've got a new senator, alex padilla up there. so i tnk that california is in a good position going forward. and governor gavin newsom wasted no time. he sent a letter off to biden. and being gavin newsom, it was

two pages of letter plus two attachments which basically said send money, send money, send money, on everything from covid to -- gavin's not short o he in. for school openings, for high speed rail, for water projects. send money. that's what they're really hoping washington is going to turn on the tap big-time. >> he could have done that in a text, if it's just send money, send money, send money. a slew of executive orders. the shot of mr. biden with the stacks of orders that he had there i thought was kind of humorous. so you have president biden, who is trying to underdo much of what president trump did, who was undoing much of what president obama did this. is not the most efficient system in the world. >> . no, it isn't. and it's sort of a statement of the problem we have in the united states right now is it's so tough to get anything done. the reason why george w. bush and barack obama and donald

trump even signed executive orders was they couldn't get it through congress. so one would sign one and the other doesn't sign it. the thing with that, larry, wher and you say we're going to do it without the congress, you're letting congress off the hook. and it's just a temporary solution. we've still got to resolve the issue of immigration. and president biden is putting forth in addition to signing some executive orders, putting forth a plan that calls for a path for citizenship. it would take eight years for millions of people who are here undocumented. that's got to make its way through congress. the $1.9 trillion aid package that everybody is so eager for. we'll have to see if that goes. everything, the vaccines, gavin newsom is asking for billions of dollars to help in vaccines. is that going happen? you can't do it all in a pen ons good, and it makes the country feel good that we're off and rung, even if it's just a couple of steps. >> now mr. trump did not attend today's inauguration, although

he did leave a letter, which is part of the tradition. the first president not to attend since andrew johnson in 1869, who by the way was also what does this mean, if anything? >> this is historic as well, larry, because, yes, johnson was impeached, but donald trump is impeached twice and going through impeachment proceedings even today. it would have been a little strange for him i think to be at that presentation, especially at the events of the couple of weeks ba so what does it mean g.oingck forward? this is going to be the first sort of big challenge for the biden administration and for the democrats. do they go ahead with impeachment? do they do it now or hold off? how does it affect biden's confirmation hearings for his cabinet positions? how does it affect the ability to get going on the virus, on schools reopening and the economic package? how do you unify a country when you put a former president on trial who still has supporters? all secnst tveofohat i come down and couly

unfinished. and recognizing that she was standing up there like mr. biden has dealt with a speech impediment saying a skinny black girl descended from slaves and raised by a single mother can dream of becoming president, only to find herself reciting for one. this woman is amazing. and to top it all off, oprah winfrey is a fan of hers. not the other way around. i'm sure it's mutual admiration. but oprah is a fan of amanda's. that's all youd to know right there.ee li nz? >> she was just phenomenal. she is going places. so many great moments. but this man right here, not sure if you recognize him with his mask on, but he is officer eugene goodman. he is that heroic officer who was seen diverting the rioters on capitol hill two weeks ago, making sure that they did not make into it the senate chamber where the senators were. and so he is such a hero. and it turns out he made an appearance today because he has been promoted after that moment. he is now the acting deputy

sergeant at arms for the capitol, and he was tasked with escorting vice president kamala harris today. so everybody is rooting for him. we're so proud of him. he is such an american hero now. and it was great to see him there with that promotion. spencer? >> oh, i'm sorry. i didn't hear anybody tossing to me. >> sorry. >> yes. there were so many moments there that i loved. there are so many, it's hard to pick one. but i did pick one. it was a moment when president biden, during his inauguration speech was talking about the challenge of heiech a a sound b. >> this is our historic moment of crisis and challenge and unity is the path forward. and we must meet this moment as the united states of america.

>> choked up and misty-eyed. there were so many, but that one was special. >> okay. so i think it's my turn. i knew you guys would all cover the really important moments, so i wanted to talk about the surprise yay moment for me, you know, lady gaga. i am such a huge fan. and i didn't realize that she would be doing the anthem. and i just got so giddy, not because she always knocks it out of the park, but because of what she stands for. you know, her song "born this way" she talks about inclusivity and being your authentic self and everything this country should stand for. i got chills. and you can tell that the moment, the history, and the honor of being able to sing the anthem was just not lost on her. and i don't know how it could not give you goose bus.mpamazin moment for me. >> totally. >> it just is inspiring and it was just wonderful. >> she was phenomenal. and speaking of lady gaga, there was a whole lot of fabulous fashion as well of course at the

auguration today from lady gaga's peace bird to michelle obama's stunning maroon pant suit and even vice president harris' stepdaughter stood out today with her skinned boots. and the new first lady had some sparkle of her own as well. i just got to say, though, bernie sanders also kind of stood out to me for his anti-fashion. if you saw him today with his gloves. people joked that he looked like he was on the way to go to the post office and run some errands. no big deal, swing by the inauguration. >> i actually felt bad for bernie. i'm always cold. and so i can just seeing him like this with the gloves and everything, that's the way i look most of the time anyway. you know, i feel for bernie. >> yeah, so we got to move on, but vice president harris' secret service code name now is pioneer, we're told, and it's a nod to harris taking her place in history as the first black

woman indian vice president. the name was chosen when she was the presumptive nominee over the summer and will likely stay with her while in office. what do you think, pioneer? >> yeah, it's very nice. and it's very, i don't know, the whole thing is just amazing, you know. i was talking with my friends. we're texting the play by play this morning. and talking about the significance. they have daughters who are a little bit older. and i was choking up, talking about the significance of this to my young daughter. and it's just the whole thing kind of takes your breath away. >> yeah. >> it's a lot different from the past four years. for sure. vice president harris now has a special memento from her birthplace of oakland to show off in washington, d.c., courtesy of the golden state warriors. warriors star steph curry presenting the vice president-elect with her very own autographed jersey.

that jersey honors the we believe uniform of the late 1990s. and steph with it right there and "madam vp" on the back. "oakland forever" on the front and a nod to the team and vice president harris' former hometown. i should add there is a video that goes along with it. you saw that video there. go to twitter, whatever platform you want, the video was put together by corain works on the warriors video team. and it is amazing. it is so good. and youee shat little girl and intercut with pictures of kamala, and you see the little girl being inspired. it's almost like she is a minicam mala. and i know carina posted that she had basically spent the past five days working on various versions of the video. and she also knocked it out of the park. it is fantastic. you got to check it out on twitter. any of you guys see it? >> i did.

and spencer, i'd love to hear from you and your perspective on what you thought of this moment and sort of her bay area ties and all the little girls that are going to look up to her now? >> oh, i loved all of that. i just loved all the messages spoken and unspoken messages that you can be what you want to be and reach for the stars. and gender is not an obstacle. i just loved it all.

good plan to use them. so it opened the basket this week for interested parties. >> throw your ideas in here and then we'll evaluate all the ideas. it's kind of an open basket right now. >> reporter: are there strings attached? well, yes. bart will clean up the cars and put them on a flatbed truck at its haywood yard. at that point a hefty bill. >> we would expect it's going to cost anywhere from $8,000 to $10,000 to move that truck and get it to wherever it needs to go and use a crane to put it where you want it. >> reporter: the western railway museum in suisun city has already launched a gofundme campaign with a goal to acquire three of the bart cars. the museum already features an extensive collection of railcars open to the public. it would some day like to be home to a bart history collection. >> we have a very large archive of material and historical information, documents, and photos of the entire bay area history of transportation.
