>> reporter: the president then getting to work signing 17 executive orders including a mask mandate on federal property. other immediate actions are aimed at reversing trump policies including rejoining the paris climate agreement and ending the ban on travelers from majority muslim countries and suspending the trump immigration program remain in mexico policy. in the meantime, a speedy process to confirm the pick for national intelligence. admiral haines has become the first woman to lead the intelligence community winning bipartisan support from senators during her confirmation including republican marco rubio, chairman of the senate intelligence committee. also last night, the new president swearing in hundreds of senior administration officials sending them this warning about how to treat others. >> but i'm not joking when i say this, if you're ever working with me and i hear you treat another colleague with disrespect, talk down to someone, i promise you i will

fire you on the spot. on the spot. no ifs, ands or buts. >> reporter: president biden says former president trump left him a, quote, very generous letter but not revealing the message saying he wants to talk to trump first. later the white house saying that doesn't mean president biden will be calling trump any time soon. >> this is a letter that was private as he said to you all. it was both generous and gracious, but i wouldn't take it as an indication of a pending call with the former president. >> another executive action by president biden will stop construction on the southern border wall. the senate impeachment trial of former president trump could begin any day now. democrats need 17 republicans to vote with them to get a conviction, and then they could vote to ban trump from running for office again. many republicans are still torn about abandoning trump fearing backlash from his base. lincoln project adviser tara setmayer weighed in on what's next for the republican party.

>> he's holding the republican party -- seems to be rather strong despite his role in a violent insurrection. the fact that he's been deplatformed and that his -- he's in a lot of legal and business peril post-presidency could perhaps sway some to move away from him. the republicans have a real, real problem, and they need to have a soul-searching reckoning about what the future of party will be because i see civil war in the republican party if they continue to go down the road of donald trump and trumpism. >> gop senator rand paul told fox news that fellow republicans who go along with convicting trump will destroy their party. some democrats say they wore body armor to the inauguration in the wake of this month's attack on the capitol, and now authorities have announced more arrests including the connecticut man accused of trapping police officer daniel hodges inside a doorway of the capitol. they've also arrested a leader of the so-called proud boys in florida for his role in the attack.

political demonstrations in the pacific northwest turned violent. police in portland used smoke grenades to disperse a crowd outside an immigration and customs enforcement facility. earlier windows at oregon's democratic party headquarters were smashed. police arrested at least eight people. and in seattle an american flag was burned during a march against immigration enforcement. windows were shattered at a courthouse and several stores. at least three people were arrested. turning now to the pandemic and the daily coronavirus death toll just broke a new grim record topping 4,400. abc's andrea fujii reports on how amazon is now offering to join the fight against the virus. >> reporter: this morning, a growing urgency to get the covid vaccine out quickly to the places that need it most. one of those places is los angeles. as scientists try to determine if the new uk variant along with another mutation in california is fueling the surge of infections. l.a. county confirmed nearly 6,500 new cases wednesday. and now there's worry what

effect the variants could have on the vaccine's effectiveness. >> work needs to be done in the laboratory to confirm whether or not the vaccine will be protective. >> reporter: the cdc says about 16.5 million vaccines have been now given nationwide as problems plague the system. new york city leaders blame delivery delays and shortages for forcing them to reschedule 22,000 appointments. the police and fire departments are now halting their vaccination schedules. in west virginia, 25,000 extra vaccine doses never showed up. now amazon is offering to help the biden administration work out the delivery kinks offering to leverage its operations information technology and communications capabilities. meanwhile, some encouraging news. a federal memo shows overall the country is seeing fewer coronavirus cases week to week and deaths are leveling off, but the number of people dying each day is staggering. in the last 24 hours a record
