day as america's 46th president. the inauguration unusual in so everyone in masks, surrounded by troops at a capitol still scarred by that siege two weeks ago. biden urged empathy, pledged to put his whole soul into uniting our country and promised action starting with the pandemic. biden's new chief medical adviser dr. anthony fauci will join us live later this morning. chief white house correspondent cecilia vega starts us off. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. after a nearly 50-year-long political career, two failed presidential runs before this one, joe biden is finally waking up right here behind me in the white house with the job that he has always dreamed of, president. this morning, e biden waking up in the white house after that celebration overnight. fireworks lighting up the nation's capital. it followed a swearing in like none this country has ever seen. surrounded by their families, president biden and vice president kamala harris making

the same day he was sworn in. our senior white house correspondent mary bruce is live now in washington with what's next for the new administration. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, robin. that flurry of executive actions will continue today. it's all part of president biden new national strategy to try to get this covid pandemic under control. establishing a covid testing board, developing guidelines to safely re-open schools and taking steps to try to overcome the disproportionate impact of this pandemic on people of color. the new president wasted no time getting to work yesterday, signing an order to mandate masks on all federal lands, and also to undo some of president trump's most controversial moves by rejoining the paris climate accord and undoing the so-called muslim travel ban. now the new president can do a lot on his own, but that big plan of his, that big ticket item, that nearly $2 trillion stimulus bill to provide some relief for this pandemic, that is going to take congressional action and will test his promise to unite a divided washington, robin. >> mary, there's something that president biden said that really caught the attention of many when he said he will not

in a decade. vice president kamala harris returning here t nato.mang htory. her rlantalex padilla becoming california's first latino senator and senators out of georgia, reverend raphael warnock and jon ossoff, the state's first jewish senator, but all eyes on nancy pelosi for when she is going to send that article of impeachment over to the senate. it could happen by the end of the week and make no mistake, this is going to be a massive challenge for lawmakers who are now going to have to juggle biden's agenda, those confirmation hearings and that impeachment trial for former president trump. michael? >> quite a bit, indeed. the impeachment trial could start any day now and former president trump still doesn't have a clear legal strategy. >> reporter: that trial could happen in just days. and sources say still no clear legal strategy from the president, not even an indication of who will be representing him on his defense time. the lawyers represented him last time around are not doing it this time around and there's that question of which republicans are going to stand

4,400 lives lost in the u.s. in just 24 hours and all of this only adding to the sense of urgency in the vaccine rollout. here in new york, governor andrew cuomo saying that the state will likely burn through its remaining supply of doses in uspend shotss. 23,000 vaccination appointments had to be postponed. moderna and pfizer reportedly producing nearly 10 million doses weekly nationwide as about 1 million people are getting the shot per day. that's now seemingly on pace with president biden's goal of injecting 100 million doses in 100 days, but significant challenges remain. meantime, in california, that state now becomes the first in the country to surpass 3 million covid cases. george? >> okay, whit, thanks very much. dr. anthony fauci, president biden's new chief medical adviser will join us with much more in our next half hour. robin? right now we turn to that spectacular inauguration celebration. lady gaga kicking off the

join us live just ahead. there she is and you'll see her this morning on "gma." cannot wait for that. >> yeah, you're not the only one. cannot wait as well. first we want to get to more on the covid-19 crisis as the u.s. marks one year since the first case diagnosed on u.s. soil. now,eaie i spoke with dr. anthony fauci, chief medical adviser to president biden. and, dr. fauci, earlier this morning you officially rejoined the w.h.o. on behalf of the united states and how will this help us fight against covid? >> well, it's going to be very important. when you're dealing with a global pandemic, you have to have an international connectivity and for us to not be in the w.h.o. was very disconcerting to everybody, all the member countries including the health officials here in the united states.

so the official announcement that we are rejoining, we're going to live up to our financial commitments and a whole bunch of other things, it was really a very good day. i mean the response i'm getting from my colleagues all over the world is really very, very refreshing. >> and all across the country there are reports that appointments for the vaccine are being canceled due to shortages are you concerned about where we are right now and when will there be enough vaccines? >> you know, i think we're going to be there reasonably soon. in fact, we probably are already there. the president has made this his top priority. i'm going to meet with him later today to brief him about the situation with covid-19, particularly emphasizing the situation with the vaccines. as you know, his goal is to get 100 million people vaccinated within the first 100 days of his presidency. i mean, i feel fairly confident that that's going to be not only that but maybe even better. >> you know as president he promised 100 million doses in the first 100 days so duio meet this goal.

>> well, you know, first of all, if you look at the contractual arrangements that we've made the amount that will be coming in, we will be able to meet that goal. the important thing is going to be as much as the production, michael, will be the distribution. to do it in an effective, efficient way, get it into the arms of people, get it really straight from the place where it's being packaged and put into the boxes, into the trucks and into the arms of people. that's something that he's going to do by a number of new initiatives. one of them is opening up community vaccination centers, to get it into the pharmacies more so we can have access to it in the farmpharmacies and to use defense production act wherever he needs it. if that means some of the material that you need syringes and needles and things like that as well as the vaccine itself, as he says he's going to do everything that he needs to do to make sure we have a successful rollout of the vaccines, get it into people's

arms and get as many people vaccinated as we possibly can. >> and we know in the uk they approved astrazeneca's vaccine which is easier to ship and store and also administer. johnson & johnson, they also have a vaccine. can we expect an approval for these soon? >> i don't want to get ahead of the fda but i can tell you that johnson & johnson, they are literally within a week or two of getting their data analyzed so that we can make a decision. if you look at the preliminary data, it looks good. don't want to get ahead of the decision, but i think that we can look forward to having more companies supplying vaccines in addition to the two now doing it namely, moderna and pfizer. >> dr. fauci, there are a few new variants of the virus. so how worried are you about the new california variant and what does that mean as far as eradicating the virus? >> well, you always take mutants and variants seriously. you can expect that an rna virus like the coronavirus is going to mutate. you've got to follow it and look at it in a surveillance way. there are some concerning

>> wow, when i was told by the presidential inaugural committee i was overjoyed. i was grateful. i was honestly shocked. i had not been, you know, expecting that at 22 they would trust me with such an honor and you know i was also daunted at the same time. i was honestly scared of writing such a poem. i wasn't sure if i could, you know, do it justice but i'm so glad that i put my best foot forward and did it. >> oh, it's so good to hear that you -- yes, you felt the fear, but you walked through it and you did it. and something else that many people don't realize about you. you share something with president biden. you have a speech impediment. tell us what yours is and how you've overcome it. >> right. so, you know, president biden has been super open about his stutter. my speech impediment wasn't a stutter but it was dropping several letters that i just

could not say for years. most specifically the "r" sound which it would take until probably i was 20 to say. meaning i couldn't say words like poetry or even gorman, which was my luka sabbat name. i had to really work at it and practice to get to where i am today. >> and so when you kept saying rise yesterday, what was going through your -- i know that you were thinking of that. >> right. i was kind of like why in the world did i put rise in my poem about five times. but also it was this amazing full circle moment for me because if i had written this poem three years ago i wouldn't have been able to say it. and so it was, you know, me rising, i think as well as the country at that time. >> beautifully said and it's been a way for you to be able to express yourself. all right, amanda, so you're there on the inaugural stage with all these luminaries. then you meet lady gaga and you said you had a special moment with her.

i just work out for two weeks and we have so much fun together. >> well, you all are magic on the screen together. and let's talk about that new book. it is called "candace's mayful puppy" and this one is a third one in the series and candace gets a dog. what does she learn from her little four-legged friend? >> well, there's always a lesson to be learned in the candace books and little candace learns to be faithful. she learns all about faithfulness through training her dog and feeding her dog and taking her dog for a walk. even though at times it gets very frustrating to do that and if we have a pet we all know how difficult training can be. but in the end her faithfulness really pays off because she gets a great little buddy who is obedient. >> you know, we see you trying to get help for a video on instagram. boris was not very obedient at that time. how did you -- how hard was boris to train?
