all right. time now for consumer news. here is 7 on your side's michael finney. hi, michael. >> hey, larry. one of president joe biden's first acts in office was to sign an executive order extending protections i should say for renters against eviction during the pandemic. president biden's order asked for the order to be extended until the end of march. the executive order also calls on federal housing agencies to extend on foreclosures and evictions for those with federally backed mortgages. and to continue their mortgage forbearance programs. the san francisco department of emergency management is renewing a warning about vaccine scams, writing in a tweet that you cannot pay for early access to the covid-19 vaccine. if you receive a call, text, email or other message offering early access, it's a scam.

building a better bay area for a safe and secure future. this is abc7 news. >> obviously we are still in a very serious situation. i mean, to have over 400,000 deaths is something that, you know, is unfortunately historic in the very bad sense. one of the things that we're going to do is to be completely transparent, open, and honest. if things go wrong, not pointing

fingers, but to correct them and to make everything we do be based on science. >> a very clear message there. dr. anthony fauci back in the white house briefing room today with his first official update in months on the coronavirus pandemic. california officials say cases, hospitalizations, and icu numbers are all down for the first time in weeks. state health and human services secretary mark ghaly credited residents and governor newsom for the drop today on gma 3. >> i think attributed to the ongoing work of californians to pay attention to the virus. after what was a hard thanksgiving holiday, the regional order the governor put in place made a difference over the winter holidays of christmas and new year's eve. and we're starting to see that pay off now. >> dr. ghaly admits the vaccine roll-out for front line health care workers didn't go as well as planned, but he said the situation is improving thanks to the governor's million vaccine challenge. a report today by "the l.a.
4:32 pm
times" says it appears the state hit the million mark in 12 days, two days longer than newsom's goal. so what's going to change now that there is a change in the white house? abc7 news contributor alok patel joining me live now. thanks for your time, doc. president biden signed ten new bills related to covid today, including broader use of the defense production act and the requirement that americans mask up for travel. how much of a difference do you think those two things will impact here? >> larry, i think they're going to a make a difference. with regards to getting vaccines into people's arms, this 200 page document are addressing everything from the actual supply to getting the doses out to looking at issues on the local and state level, make sure states have what they need in order to actually create these max vaccination campaigns, and to make sure people are getting the right amount of communication about where to go to get the vaccines and addressing any misinformation.
4:33 pm
and then masks, we know they work. and actually having a mandate on federal property or during travel will hope i will curb those outbreaks we continuously see. >> so the president has a goal of 100 million vaccinations in 100 days. meanwhile, san francisco wants to get every city resident immunized by june. take them one by one. how realistic are these goals? >> i think the former is realistic. right now the united states is getting close to about a million a day, if we haven't already hit that mark with vaccines. so honestly, that just needs to be maintained. there are some experts throughout who actually think the goal should be more ambitious, and it should be more than 100 million americans in 100 days. but i think hitting that gel right now is really important. but there are some local issues which need to be addressed which i think will be addressed in san francisco. for example, according to the cdc, there are some centers which have only given out 40 to 50% of their supply. that kind of falls in line with these national numbers when you see that over 30 million doses
4:34 pm
have been administered. we have only given out about 16 million. so in san francisco, we're now doing about 3,000 to 4,000 i believe vaccines a day. we need to get that number up to 10,000. so getting the supply out to san francisco, the supply of vaccines is going to be important. and building those three mass vaccination sites is going to be crucial as well. let's not forget, once we get more moderna and pfizer doses, we may also get the approval for other vaccines likes johnson & johnson, astrazeneca, which could come in and big, big game changers. i'm optimistic, larry. >> okay, well, i'm glad to hear that you mentioned the moderna vaccine, and we had the report that they were on pause for a while because of some allergic reactions, and now they've got the green light to go ahead. do you think some people are going to be a little reluctant regarding moderna? >> i think people might be reluctant if they aren't given the right amount of communication. people need to read everything below the scary headlines. people paused the moderna trial. maybe it was really cautious. but that should be a safety
4:35 pm
check and that should be reassuring to people. they looked at the actual doses. it's been given out to thousands of people and only seven in a san diego cluster had allergic symptoms. they said hey, this vaccine is good to go. here is what the biden administration is going to do, which will also i think prevent any other future fear issues is there is going to be consistent, clear evidence-based communication. we all heard dr. fauci today talk about how he feels it's now liberating that he can go out there and talk about science and just be honest about things. i think this is all going to make a huge difference. >> i'm glad you mentioned that, because the president says public trust, restoring that and information that everybody receives is a huge priority right now. i wonder if it's too late. if you're one of those people that spent the last nine months complaining about having to wear a mask at trader joe's, is anything dr. fauci going to change your mind? >> you know, it's possible that we've missed the boat on some people, but i think moving forward, having that clear, consistent communication will
4:36 pm
make a difference. and people can't deny the stats. even if you're out and protesting at a grocery store and you're going to an anti-mask rally, you can't deny that we have now passed world war ii numbers in terms of total deaths. this is now the number one killer of americans per day, exceeding heart disease, which one of your producers mentioned to me earlier. that's crazy. you can't deny that. and hearing it consistently on a national level will make a difference. >> let's hope it turns things around, the new administration has plan that they can enact and it will be effective. doctor, thank you so much for your time as always. >> it will be science first. >> science, yes. it's a real thing. thanks, doc. >> thank you. the vice president and kamala harris in the white house, it's
