day. the problem has been supply. there's always been frustration about the tier system which determines who is eligible for the vaccine. we checked with experts who are definitely talking about this. they say they are hearing the state is discussing moving away from the tier system and instead making it more of an age-based system. >> i think that age is probably going to be a big driver. that is what the uk did. that is what a lot of other states are doing. is they are just going by age. >> san francisco is still chipping away at the first tier. right now they have approximately 210,000 san franciscoens who qualify for the vaccine. they all need two doses. so that means the city needs 40,000 doses to vaccinate all eligible. so far the city has received 103,000. so quite a gap there. they are planning ahead though for more doses. they are going to create more

doses. california's top public health official is predicting it could sake six months to vaccinate everyone 65 and up. trying to get the vaccine has been a highly confusing process for many seniors. advocates hope that is about to change. >> my hope is that these big health entities will step forward and try and help problem solve for these folks. >> stepping up its efforts next monday. for now it will be limited to those 75 and up. officials hope to expand that to patients over 65 next month. abc7 news is monitoring the covid vaccine rollout in california with our vaccine

engz engineers in southern california are developing a color-changing sticker that could indicate you may have been exposed to covid-19. it would go on the outside of your mask. as you breathe thru the mask the sticker would accumulate particles. at the end of the day you click a blister pack on the sticker and --. the idea is that this will help with covid surveillance. >> that is what we were trying to develop. is a device that would say hey today there is an elevated risk and everybody should seek some additional testing. >> the nih gave more than a million dollars to the researchers to develop and test the sticker. >> amazing. can't wait to have that. >> a story back in september inspired local students to enter a tech competition and good news they are now headed to the

we're going to start with a wet way to start the day. it is going to be like that for a few days, mike. >> yeah, almost every day, moving all the way through possibly next weekend. so january 22nd is the day when winter came back to the bay area. and first it started with some light showers this morning. then mainly in the east bay, and moving into the south bay right now. and in fact, you can see a line from about antioch down to red wood city and these will be around another hour, hour and a half or so, that's going to keep things pretty slippery and once that passes, we have got the core of the system still up to our north. you see that spin, that's what's going to create the thunderstorms midmorning to midafternoon and the possibility of some graupel, hail and snow mixture. you see already .07 of an inch, bay bridge is wet this morning, in the 40s. we'll warm in the low to mid-50s with showers becoming less likely as we head into the evening hours. this storm is one, but i have three coming up next week. more
