it's cold, it's getting windy by the afternoon. temperatures barely in the low 50s. our level 1 system. we are looking at that break for monday. but as we get into your tuesday, we're talking about atmospheric rivers setting up. we'll explain with all the rain and cold details in a few minutes. beyond getting the vaccine, questions are rolling how effective it will be against the new variant covid-19 in california. the strain is making up a third of the cases. liz pena found out, it was an area doctor and he says more research is needed to find out what comes next. >> reporter: it was december 21st, 2020, when dr. chu and his colleagues found the covid-19 variant. >> we found this incidentally

while doing genomic surveillance and what emerged from the united kingdom from the uk. >> immediately after he alerted the state's health department by then multiple cases had been spotted. >> from the end of november to the end of the area. we found they had increased from less than 5% to more than 25%. more than in a quarter of cases. >> reporter: the variants found in the uk is spreading between 30 and 70% havt faster than others. dr. chu says they are tracking the california variants. he hopes his findings push for more scientific varnts to catch it faster. >> we do not have a robust system by which to identify what percentage of the strains in the

community may be of concern. >> do you suggest those vaccines will also have to change? >> there will be variants that would require the vaccine to be modified. >> dr. chu says at least ten counties in california have reported cases of the variant. he says the most effective way to stop the mutation is vaccinate as many people as possible and fast. >> one issue we focus on is your health. that does include the vaccine rollout. questions over how to get the appointment have been impossible to answer for many bay residents. matt boone spoke to people desperately trying to pick a spot and a woman that got one who says it was a fluke.

7-day positivity rate dropped to 8.5%. it's a good indicator to measure the spread of the virus so we're seeing it go down. now, activists filled the street for the west coast walk for life. >> this is yesterday. the day began with a morning prayer vigil on valencia street. demonstrators want to send a message the church is a consideration for people considering abortion. >> we would encourage them to choose life. life is precious. there is nothing more wonderful than parenthood even in troubled tim times. >> latere afternoon, they marched down market street to the embarcadero.

this week's walk was scaled back because of the pandemic. the light is back on after that wind storm caused damage to power lines. you can see several clusters of green representing 50 homes or fewer without power. pg&e says the storm was the longest they've seen in the last ten years. several hundred poles, transformers and wires were damaged. the community resource center that pg&e set up is now closed. and a watermain break may have caused damage in millbbray. firefighters had to close victoria avenue. at least one building was flooded. some neighbors are reportedly against reopening twin acrdinto they have seen more trash

good morning, everybody. we're starting this half hour with a look at the weather and we're tracking it with meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, liz, good morning to you. nothing's changed. we are looking at our level 1 system. we have fog in the north bay. low 30s. mid-30s in livermore. 40 in san ramone, 53 in oakland. so we're looking at that fog. that's all leading to rain. it's 10 degrees in napa. you probably feel a level 1 system bringing showers, scattered downpours, becoming windy and a dusting of snow as our snow levels continue to lower. from the north coast all the way down through the peninsula, 52 ento 30-mile-an-hour winds and those north wind gusting to about 50 miles an hour.

being accused of discussing plans with justice department officials to overturn the election while he was still in officer. in a stunning report by the "new york times", citing unnamed sources, trump allegedly discussed removing acting attorney general jeffrey rosen in order to pressure georgia officials to flip the state's presidential election results. the man who reportedly worked on the plan, lawyer jeffrey clark, at times reported trump allegedly mauled over whether to replace him with clark because he refused to carry out the alleged scheme. according to times, trump decided against firing rongji after top officials threatened mass resignations. saying they contained inaccuracies and the communications were consistent with the law. trump declined to comment according to report. the latest report could have an impact on the former president's upcoming impeachment trial. both rosen and clark could be
