i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm larry beil. this weekend it will be exactly one year since santa clara county reported its first case of coronavirus. it actually was the first case in the entire bay area. take a look now at the journey that our region has been on. every day abc7 has been keeping track of new cases diagnosed in the bay area, as well as a rolling seven-day average. you see the summer surge, and that was absolutely dwarfed by the winter surge. at the worst point, more than 6,000 cases were reported in a single day. but now check out the rolling average. that yellow line dropping, and the lower it goes, the better that we feel. and that's because protecting our health is part of building a better bay area. it's a commitment that we've made as a tv station to you. and it's why we want to know and want you to know what action is being taken in santa clara county. that's the most populous one in the bay area to show what they're trying to do to slow the spread of the coronavirus. abc7 news reporter chris nguyen has some answers. >> reporter: tonight a number no one wanted to seattle.

at least 100,000 cases of covid-19 now confirmed in santa clara county since the start of the pandemic. >> it's really hard to see that. the whole pandemic and the whole situation. >> reporter: san jose resident stopped by the county fairgrounds to receive her first dose of the vaccine. >> i was scared and really anxious, but after i got it, i mean, was really good. no pain. and i hope the result is good and i'm sure it will be. >> reporter: caregiver faith miranda also signed up for a shot with her mother on her mind. >> i haven't seen her, you know, for at least good six months. scher she's actually live in a senior home and it's tough. >> reporter: the county is administering more than 6,000 vaccines a day with the ability to double that amount, but only if they receive more splupply fm the state. >> our system and the county as a whole, we stand strong with an infrastructure that is ready to further expand our capacity. >> reporter: efforts that will be necessary to help stop the spread of the virus. county officials say while the road ahead will be challenging,
6:02 pm
it's important to note how our collective sacrifices led to this moment. >> we were the first county really to have a shelter in place community. >> our health care at times at loss for words. >> in some ways i have to take a deep breath and think my gosh, i never thought we would get to this number. >> reporter: but focus on the task at hand, continually serving the public as best they can. >> even if you've been one of the lucky folks who have been able to get two vaccines, that still doesn't make you completely immune, and you still can pass it on to others. so i ask that people are still cognizant of that. >> reporter: in san jose, chris nguyen, abc7 news. >> yeah, it's an important piece of information to remember. we're putting covid in context, one number at a time. this week's number is 33, as in 33%, as in one in three people. that's the new estimate by epidemiologist of the number of people who have really been infected by coronavirus in the
6:03 pm
united states. doing the math, that's more than 100 million cases in the u.s. that's a b populations of california, texas, pennsylvania, and new york combined. abc7 news news special correspondent dr. alok patel explains how we got to this number. >> this is based on the fact there are a lot of asymptomatic cases out there and there are a lot of people who may have had mild symptoms and weren't able to get tested. last summer epidemiologists suspected the actual case count may have been six to ten times higher than what was reported. now with restrictions, some members telephone others having immunity from the vaccine, the number might be lower, four times.icans infecte. we'll have herd immunity when we get to 75 or 80% greater throughout the population. so we still have a ways to go. >> that's why getting vaccine nated is so important. the problem is supply is hitting
6:04 pm
a new low across the state. members of kaiser permanente, sutter health, and stanford health care, they're all struggling to get appointments despite meeting every qualification. abc7 news reporter stephanie sierra digging into concerns from viewers all across the bay area. stephanie, what are you hearing? >> larry, the big problem continues to be demand as far outweighing supply. we just learned skieser in northern california is only receiving doses for 9% of the more than 270,000 members ■they have over 75. and that's causing this appointment backlog. >> how do i get my mother scheduled? >> as far as county health, i haven't heard anything from county health. >> it's a mess. >> reporter: meet margaret, george, and cynthia. they're all trying to secure appointments to get vaccinated, but each of them is getting dealt a very difficult hand. george lives in san jose. >> contacted kaiser and i sat on the phone for about 45 minutes. >> reporter: george has been trying for two weeks to get an
6:05 pm
appointment through kaiser permanente for his 72-year-old wife. he spoke to a nurse today. >> and she was pretty blunt about it, you know. we don't have enough, and we'll notify you when we have it in there. >> reporter: kaiser told abc7 the very limited supply of vaccine california is receiving from the federal government is what's limiting appointments. we have received only enough to vaccinate 4.5% of our california members. . >> but my wife was very frustrated. >> reporter: his wife got back on the phone and tried stanford health care. >> she called them and said no, to uess you've been a e vaccine patient here or you're an existing patient. >> reporter: turns out stanford is requiring members to have received care at least one in the last three years in order to get vaccinated. >> they were completely full. no appointments available through 2021. >> reporter: for the past two weeks, cynthia rodriguez has been trying to get her 88-year-old mother vaccinated in

san francisco. how many different times have you been redirected for information, told to go here, there, and then somewhere else? >> one, two, three, four, five times. >> reporter: after trying sites through the county and her private provider, she was told -- >> take their a pharmacy. her local walgreens. and they said we won't have any vaccines until april, maybe later. >> reporter: margaret elmer of walnut creek was told the same, battling misinformation from contra costa public health services. >> i was told that i was too young at 72 to have the vaccine, even though i'm suffering right now from severe asthma. that i was out of luck. >> reporter: we have been working with both margaret and cynthia to help get them some ers. coli hlsus theor t makeore appointment slots open at several of their county vaccination sites. and cynthia found some space for appointments at the walgreens on polk street here in san francisco.
6:07 pm
and i got to say, larry, we just found out her 88-year-old mother was vaccinated just ten minutes ago. so that's great news. >> breaking news right here. that is very good news. s let's get back into the kaiser situation. do you have to be 75 or older right now to get the shot? >> yes. 75 and older in the next couple of days, though, kaiser says staff will be reaching out to members in that age group to schedule future appointments. but since they're only receiving doses to accommodate 9% of that population here in northern california, it will take a while to reach everyone. so the best thing you can do is be proactive and call your doctor to check in. we saw with cynthia's mom today, there could be cancellations and you could make your way. in. >> hopefully people get lucky if you are persistent. stephanie, thank you. >> there are so many questions about the vaccines like when can you get one, why is it taking so long. abc7 news reporter lyanne answer some of our questions.
6:08 pm
lyanne? >> well, we're getting hundreds of questions through our website. we thank you for that. i think every family in the bay area is searching for answers, the right answers, yet there is a lot of confusion. now we're going to attempt to answer some of your questions. so let's start with our first question. my doctor told me on friday for me to get my vaccine asap. i'm disabled, have high blood pressure and diabetes, but i'm 61 years old. what do i do? and the answer, they are still not vaccinating people with underlying conditions who are younger than 65. and here's why. they are still trying to vaccinate people who are older because they are at the absolute highest risk for dying. so unfortunately, you're going to have to wait a little bit longer. now another question, the california vaccine distribution plan phase 1, tier 1b includes those who work in education.
6:09 pm
is this limited to those working in the school district system, meaning public schools, or does it includes those in any private school or program for children and youth? good question. now the answer is you can't vaccinate the public school teachers and not vaccinate the ones who work in private schools. the state covid-19 vaccination plan does not differentiate between the two. now here is another concern. some people 65 and older finally get that appointment online just to realize that they won't get vaccinated until much later, say march or maybe april. well, dr. mike wasserman, former president of the california association of long-term medicine says do not settle. >> my dad is 86. got a date in march, and i said dad, that doesn't make any sense to me. you're 86. you have health issues. call your doctor. call back. and he got his date moved up. >> that's right.
6:10 pm
be persistent. now as i mentioned, we have hundreds of questions. most people want to know how to get the vaccine. the answer is, again, be persistent and register everywhere you can, the county, the state, your health provider, and we have information on vaccine registration for every bay area county and the major health systems at abc7news.com. in the newsroom, lyanne melendez, abc7 news. >> those were some really good questions you got answers to. thank you, lyanne. on to he stormwatch now, and take a look at this. a landslide took out a big chunk of highway 1 in monterey county. this is near rat creek. it 1th bige' road whaen.w that's because caltrans and the chp shut it down on tuesday before the big storm rolled through. a chp officer who was patrolling this area describes what he saw. >> yesterday around 4:00 p.m., i
6:11 pm
was in the area when i noticed this section of roadway, specifically the southbound lane had fallen off towards the ocean. i stayed in the area until i was relieved last evening around 6:00 p.m. the roadway still consisted of a northbound lane. some time overnight and prior to 6:30 this morning, we responded back to the scene with the assistance of caltrans access and realized that the roadway is now gone. >> it looks incredible, but the chp says do not drive there to see it for yourself. you're not going get there anyway. highway 1 is closed from ragged point in san luis obispo county to fullers point in monterey county so caltrans can work on repairs. governor newsom has just declared a state of emergency in those two counties because of th is k damage done by the theme in that area, highway 1 going down towards big sur. it seems like every few years oo the road washes away. the good news for this weekend, ama, we don't expect to have

much rain. >> yeah, although still be, you know, alert because i walked outside to take the dog for a walk and then suddenly got caught in some rain. spencer, i know you can't give me the exact timing everywhere. >> i blame spencer. >> no, i can't. >> he said it. >> you always do. ama gives great advice. be alert because there is a little bit of rain coming our way. right now the bay area is dry. however, this future radar shows that there will be some light rain and showers in the north bay over the weekend. here is the forecast animation starting 5:00 a.m. tomorrow. notice that throughout the weekend, we'll see little trickles of light rain again pu mainly through thnorth bay. 's n likely any other region of the bay area will get any rainfall this weekend. however, after the weekend, that changes. we have a storm coming in on monday and tuesday that ranks 1 on the storm impact scale. it will be -- it will produce
