has been a pretty horrific start to the year with already 90,000 american lives lost to covid-19 in january, and while this morning the vaccine rollout is starting to speed up a little bit, the longer we take to get everyone vaccinated, the more time this virus has to change. this morning, the u.s. racing to develop herd immunity as coronavirus continues to mutate and evolve. 434 cases of the uk variant have now been detected in 30 states as well as the first cases of a variant from brazil and two cases of a variant from south africa. >> you can always make a vaccine pretty quickly with this advanced technology that you could address a given mutant but it is concerning. >> reporter: johnson & johnson says trials for its vaccine show efficacy takes hold in seven to ten days. it's 66% overall effective and lower than its counterparts but shown it could be up to 100% effective in preventing hospitalization and death. >> with more vaccines becoming

available then we will move more quickly to immunization of the entire population and herd immunity which is what we need to stop this pandemic. >> reporter: unlike pfizer and moderna's vaccines, johnson & johnson's is a single dose, one and done shot and it doesn't need to be stored at subzero temperatures. on average right now, the u.s. is vaccinating 1.2 million americans a day and fema is now providing a billion dollars in support to vaccination sites. but so far only seven states have vaccinated more than 10% of their populations and many locations are desperate to find the necessary staffing. >> so we would really love help with individuals who are medically trained and nonmedically trained. >> reporter: and so far this morning, there are some positive trends nationally, for example, hospitalizations dropped 14% week to week and here in new york governor andrew cuomo says the holiday surge is finally over and restaurants will be able to re-open at 25% capacity on valentine's day.

eva. >> some welcome news for those restaurants. trevor ault for us, thank you. now to the politics of the pandemic. president biden is looking to pass a huge relief package and changing his tone about republican support for it. with more. good morning, andrew. >> reporter: good morning, eva. a growing number of republicans are expressing opposition over the size of president biden's $1.9 trillion stimulus proposal and after promising unity and a willingness to work with republicans in congress, the president is now signaling support for senate democrats to move ahead on covid relief without gop support. biden's call to congress cles16biion for vaccinations, more help for small businesses and another round of direct payments to most americans for $1400. now, biden and newly appointed treasury secretary janet yellen met friday morning and the president says he's focused on broader relief than most republicans can stomach and now republicans like senator lindsey graham are calling foul,

their work. the full page add in the new york times, signed by 50 prominent women across business, entertainment and activism saying, quote, it's time to put a dollar figure on our labor. mother hood isn't a favor, and it's not a luxury. it's a job. the campaign started by girls who code, an organization founded to close the gender gap in technology now asking the biden administration to form a task force to enact a plan to support moms. more than 2 million of whom have left the work force since the pandemic began. >> when covid-19 happened we became the nanny, the cook, tech support, mental health counselor. the other reason why mothers are leaving the work force is because many of us aren't offered flexibility. it's making it untenable for us to work. and because we've had to supplant our unpaid labor for paid labor, it's causing us to leave the work force in droves. >> the proposal being called the marshall plan for moms calls for

basic income for mothers. affordable day care and paid parental leave. safely reopening schooling full-time and programs to train mothers to reenter the work force. >> so many mothers are in industries like health care and education and retail. a lot of these jobs, they're not coming back. we need a plan to figure out how we're going to get mothers back to the labor force. >> one of the president's advisers saying many of the demands are part of biden's america rescue plan. the administration is pointing out they want to expand the child tax credit and make it fully refundable. the question is, whether there's enough bipartisan sporupport on capitol hill to make it happen. >> faith, thank you. let's bring in author of founder of "the fifth trimester. shesit advice for moms. whether or not this plan or any plan is put in place, what's something that working moms can

do right now to achieve better work/life balance? >> thanks. well, first of all, if you can't work at 100% capacity right now, don't assume you have to necessarily take a step back. i'm hearing from clients they are much more open to flexible arrangements than they ever have been out of necessity. so don't give yourself a pay cut. go to your manager and say exactly what it is, and be specific. they're not mind readers. they're people also with a personal life ghoing through a pandemic. >> many people are in particular, moms, facing major financial burdens right now. tell us about how to deal with that. >> sure. absolutely. i'm hearing a lot of really desperate situations. one thing we know that research shows is salary transparency closes the gender wage gap. what i'm hearing from my families is when they talk to each other, they can use the same strategy.

there's no stigma around discussing money issues with your friends. network with them. your working parent friends are thundershower network. they're your colleagues. find out deals at the grocery store but also what they're negotiating in their workplaces. >> one reason many moms leave the work force is they don't have child care options. do you have any tips for that? >> absolutely. if you have a partner, consider yourself lucky. that partner is your number one resource. even if that partner might make more money, you're both required to contribute equally to raising these children. so really take count of your unpaid labor and count that as well. and then also be flexible in your definition of child care. of what that is. for me, i will admit to you yesterday it was two hours of mine craft so i could invest in a call that is going to get me paid next year into q-4. that's worth it for me. it needs to be worth it to the families of america who are just trying to make this work. >> yes. so many moms trying to make it

this 400-page memoir just days before she died and it is just a force. it goes through her entire life. it shares stories of her career, of her childhood, of her marriage to jazz star miles davis and how tumultuous that was for her. but you just get her resolve in every single page so i encourage everyone to go out and get this. it's a history book almost. but if you can. it's moving very quickly, of course, because of the circumstances because she's no longer with us and you just see the outpouring that has happened on social media. viola davis who she was just working with on "how to get away with murder," oprah we know has taken this really hard, and the timing is so crazy because we just had her in the magazine this week. she's in our life in pictures with cicely tyson, so it's a tough moment, but i do think it's kind of beautiful that we have this work that we can dig into.

organize >> it's so hard. i can tell you as a mom, kids benefit from really having consistency in their routine. go for a storage ottoman or a storage basket that really can corral all of their supplies whether it's laptops, notebooks, papers, you name it. i do this with my 5-year-old. you know, at the beginning. of the day she knows exactly where to grab her supplies and the best part is she knows how to clean up at the end of the day. another great tip is to really -- yeah, it's perfect. another great tip is consider a backpack. consider it as a locker, really use it to keep all of their office essentials in one place, you can put it on the back of their chair so they know exactly where everything is. and then, you know, you want to involve them in the decorating process. i mean, decorating is so much fun so why not engage your children by inviting them to pick out something as simple as
