>> reporter: inside the clinical virology laboratory, uk and brazil variants were found. >> about 17% of samples we sequenced. >> reporter: abc news got an exclusive look at the lab where researchers screened hundreds of samples collected across the bay area. >> i'm not too surprised at its progression, but certainly all of the twists and turns kept i think everyone on their toes. >> reporter: almost a month ago, dr. charles chiu found the varnl variant. it was a matter of time to detect the two variants in the region. >> what's the difference between the variants? >> one of the key aspects they have in common, all of them have mutations in spike protein. that's a critical region that binds cells, allows the virus to infect cells. as a result, mutations in that

region in spike protein are associated with possibly making a virus more transmissible. >> reporter: what gives him hope is this, more people getting vaccinated. he says this is the only way to stop the variants from spreading. >> it is not unexpected we will start to see cases and likely will start to see increasing number of cases in days to come. >> reporter: medical experts say we need to prioritize regions where the variant is dominant, increase vaccination efforts as fast as possible. the highly contagious variants add to a sense of urgency for a vaccine. jr stone explains there's a new weapon on the the the >> this is the new vaccine that could get emergency authorization by late february in the united states. >> this is a single shot vaccine

you start to see anywhere from 7 to 10 days. >> johnson & johnson says it is effective 66%, 85% against severe disease, and 100% against hospitalization and death. pfizer and moderna are 95% effective against moderate disease. >> there were no hospitalizations or deaths in the vaccine group. this tells us we have a value added additional vaccine candidate. >> the johnson & johnson vaccine was tested in south africa where highly contagious covid-19 variant surfaced. there, the he have see was 57% for moderate disease. johnson & johnson says storage requirements are more convenient for the vaccine, and stanford

doctors say that could be a game changer. >> this can stay in the refrigerator, it would be more like the annual flu shot which you can get at the local pharmacy. >> if authorized, johnson & johnson says they could have 100 million doses available by june. jr stone, abc7 news. down in south bay, while santa clara county is focused on vaccinating people, it reached a sober milestone. >> one year later, we are surfacing 100,000 cumulative cases. quite a milestone which none of us i think wanted to see. >> county health officials are vaccinating 6600 people a day, and have an ambitious goal the next seven days. they want to get shots in the arms of 60,000 people over the age of 65. happening today, a large covid-19 vaccination effort for underserved and vulnerable communities in east palo alto.

ravenswood family health plans to vaccination 800 to a thousand people today, including registered patients over 65 and health care workers, too. valid id is required to get vaccinated. the vaccine clinic is under way and open until 6:00 p.m. today. the address there is 1885 bay road. 1885 bay road. in the east bay, alameda county revealed new details about its mass vaccination sites. the plan of focus is oakland colosseum and alameda county fairgrounds. the county is receiving 10 to 15,000 doses per week. the goal would be to administer 5,000 doses per day at each of those sites. like other counties, it is facing supply shortage. >> we are planning for bigger distribution network than we have vaccine now. keeping our fingers crossed that we'll get that supply. >> county officials hope to have the large sites up and running

by sometime mid february. there are a lot of questions about the vaccine since the rollout began, questions coming from you personally. abc7 reporter liam melendez talked to experts to get questions answered, including this one. >> haven't had the flu vaccine since mid 1960s. two times i ended up with high temps, 103, 104 degrees within hours of the shot. what do you suggest i do? a lot of people are asking that. reaction to vaccine is normal according to doctors, it means your body is responding to the vaccine. that vaccine is working for you. health experts say there should be no reason for anyone not to get the vaccine, especially older people. >> the question we are getting most often understandably so, how to get vaccinated. the answer is you have to be persistent for starters and register everywhere you can. that means the county, state,

even your own health care provider. if you have questions about the vaccine, and we understand you probably do, go to abc7news.com/vaccine. you'll see a big blue box. click on that. it will take you to a form to send your question directly to the abc7 news vaccine team. as you scroll through social media, you're likely to see people share pictures of their vaccine card. officials warn that scammers are targeting posts. listen up. vaccination cards are used or issued when you go and get the covid shot. they have personal information on them like your name, birthdate, where you got the vaccine. better business bureau says scammers could use real cards to make copies. officials say to share a photo of the vaccine sticker they hand to you or a selfie of you getting the vaccine instead. we are tracking california's vaccination progress. it is up on the website.

32 years after the kidnapping of eileen they're sharing a message in her honor. the candlelight vigil and walk are cancelled this year. last year, her mother passed away. her family says she never gave up hope. neither will they.

reward of $95,000 is offered for information leading to the person responsible for her disappearance. a santa clara deputy shot in an ambush last year on patrol is facing a felony charge. prosecutors say they believe he made the entire abc7 tells what made prosecutors doubt that story. >> reporter: it caused panic with law enforcement. >> shots fired. >> reporter: that call from santa clara deputy that he was shot at randomly the night of january 31st, 2020. >> he was very lucky. he was very brave. >> reporter: that was the sheriff, lori smith, the day after it happened, pointing to his body worn camera struck by a bullet, crediting it with saving his life. the assailants were never found. prosecutors say they never

existed. the entire story was fabricated. >> when you take a close look at the evidence, the story didn't add up. >> reporter: that's the deputy district attorney leading the prosecution against the deputy that was arrested friday, booked on charges of vandalism, falsely reporting a crime. >> deeply disappointing and disturbing. >> reporter: he wouldn't reveal specific evidence but says analysis of bullets was an important factor. in a statement, sheriff smith wrote if allegations hold true, his actions are not representative of the upstanding men and women who risk their lives every day to serve with honesty and integrity. if convicted could face up to four years in prison. we were unable to reach gill for comment. >> reporter: deputy gill is still under administrative leave, expected to be arraigned in coming weeks. matt boone, abc7 news. the oakland city council will consider a proposal on

tuesday that will require large grocery stores to pay workers hazard pay during the pandemic. talking about increase of $5 an hour, according to a report on the proposal. the proposed ordinance defines large stores as those with over 500 employees nationwide, but city and staff haven't talked to large chains for their opinion on this. some are recommending the council wait to vote. for people who kept their jobs during the pandemic, a lot of them are now working from home as you know. this could have impact on taxes you file this year. rob hayes from our sister station in los angeles explains. >> reporter: as if the pandemic hasn't already been physically and mentally taxing, now we're going to find out how literally taxing it will be. countdown to tax day, now ticking, be on the lookout for twists this year. >> it is going to be completely different. >> reporter: that is a nice way of saying how the already

complex tax filing process will be more complex. eric yen is here. >> i don't want to panic taxpayers. >> reporter: look at the stimulus check you were happy to get. >> you do not pay taxes on that. >> reporter: more good news if you didn't receive one last year because you earned too much in 2019, there's still a chance to cash in if income took a big enough hit last year. >> if income dropped below the threshold, you can claim that credit back on the 2020 taxes. >> unemployment, another big factor for people. >> unemployment is taxed at the federal level. you do not pay taxes to california. >> but this is where you can get into tax trouble. while california doels out up to 450 a week in unemployment, for awhile congress added another $600 a week, pandemic

unemployment assistance. if you collected that, you could face a big tax bill, even if you chose to have taxes withheld. >> they only base the tax of 450 as opposed to the additional 600. most of the time, there will be underwithholding. >> working from home could throw a wrench into taxes. if you decide to work from a second home in another state, you may have to pay income taxes there as well. >> for the taxes you give to the state, you get a credit from california. eliminates double taxation. >> what it means, finally a second tax return for the other state and more paperwork. in a year filled with ppp and edd, pua, perhaps three letters to turn to are cpa. in glendale, rob hayes, abc7 news. >> good advice for us all as we begin to think about taxes.

some developing news on the central coast. governor newsom declaring a state of emergency for san oh business bow because of the damaging storms from monterey county. schek it out. speaks for itself. heavy rain caused a section of highway 1 on the big sur coast to fall into the ocean. the road was closed before the storm hit. by yesterday, the entire section was washed away. >> this is going to go on. they're going to keep rebuilding roads because we love this area. and people that come down here need to realize that there are certain stretches that can be a little dangerous, especially in bad weather. >> cal tran says the area will be closed until further notice. understandably so. blustery weather was too much for yosemite national park closed nearly a week to deal with cleanup there. according to l.a. times, the park looking at $200 million in damage.

park rangers say winds knocked down at least 15 of the giant sequoias before they could clear trees, it started to snow there. a maricopa service says it is the worst damage in three years. it is set to open monday. lake tahoe saw plenty of snow the past few days. plow drivers cleaned up 2200 miles of roads. tahoe city didn't look much different. snow piled on homes and sidewalks, blocking in cars. homeowners spent hours and hours shoveling out the driveways. >> you're not going to get to work on time. you can't go anywhere. literally, can't go anywhere. snow will win every time. you have to shovel, you have to do what you got to do. >> you just got to do what you got to do. look at this line here. skiers lined up before the slopes open at heavenly. you can see this 11-year-old

let them play. it is a push to try to convince the state to let school sports resume. practices and games have all been called off for young athletes since the pandemic started. abc7 reporter leslie brinkley has more. >> allow these babies to get back outside, be kids again. >> reporter: coaches join forces with thousands of parents and students friday morning in a virtual plea to the california governor to open up youth sports as they showed off a new physician's letter to bolster the case. >> three-page document with 57 different positions from across the entire state of california that show support for return of safe play for our students. >> this is not a political issue. athletes are not democrats, they're not republicans. all they want to do is play. we want to work with both sides of the legislature. >> reporter: they say closure of sports during the pandemic is doing irrepairable damage to kids. >> churches are closed, gyms are

that warm feeling inside, knowing we're doing good for communities. help is on the way for california renters who have been hit hard by the pandemic. governor gavin newsom signed legislation extending the eviction moratorium, setting aside more than $2.5 billion for back rent. the current moratorium set to expire this monday. it will run through end of june. the wild week on wall street fueled by a short squeeze ended with the dow dropping more than 600 points. its worst week since october. meanwhile, gamestop, a key stock behind the market chaos is still surging. deed ra bolton has the latest. >> reporter: there's a pause from market mania after the dow plunged more than 600 points friday. >> never thought i would do day trading. >> reporter: it is due to a fight between professional wall street investors and online army

of amateur day traders. hedge fund managers calculated two companies, gamestop and amc theaters were on the brink of collapse, bet against them by shorting their stocks. a group of amateurs brought together over social media purchased shares in both companies, causing stocks to soar and wall street professionals to lose millions. gamestop and amc closing up for the week. gamestop skyrocketing 400%. amc more than 300%. many credit 34-year-old keith gill as the force behind the grass roots investing effort using read it and youtube for stock tips. gill says this story is so much bigger than me. i support these retail investors and their ability to make a statement. now many officials, analysts, market experts are concerned that market turbulence may hurt individual investors. sec says, quote, it is closely

happening today, san francisco giants legend barry bonds is once again doing his part building a better bay area. the foundation will make a $25,000 donation to the san francisco food bank. he will be visiting the marin center. he will be volunteering and presenting a portion of his donation, dedicated to marin.

best. >> when i talk with people, i will be like i was in napa, working on the roller coaster. they're like what? >> wait, are you serious, you built what? how? the matterhorn is one of my favorites. we used to live in southern california. when we lived there, we were annual pass holders, go to vacation spot. something my parents, meant a lot to them growing up. >> original ride is matterhorn. we added alpine escape. people see it online. it looks big. when you stand next to it and realize how much work has to go into a project like this, it takes your breath away. >> it is fun to call, say we need a ton of steel literally. that was cool. >> i would compare it to the old barn raising they had back in the day. a lot like that. bringing friends together, drawing up plans. >> there was a lot of trial and

error. >> the yeti wasn't in the original plan. i thought if we're going to this trouble, might as well have the yeti. >> i said hey, you know, my brother matthew could probably print you a head, like a 3d print. michael's immediate response was if we can do that, why wouldn't we do that. >> my awesome moment was riding it the first time. for me, that's when everything came together. >> during the night, the ride takes on a life of its own. designed full on fireworks projection show how disneyland has that projected on the castle, and we put that on the side of the mountain with full music track. i don't think anybody could have expected 2020. it made 2020 better for all of us.
