with that we say good evening. i'm dion lim. so far the state has been vaccinating older adults and certain essential workers. after this phase they plan to move to an age-based system for priority. local doctors point out latinos are the demographic with the highest cases in california. abc7 news reporter luz pena explains how the solution could lie in the data da. >> reporter: in true pandemic form, zoom has become one of the vital tools community group latinos unidos of berkeley is using to inform this demographic about the covid-19 vaccine. >> we have about 70 members of latinos who live in berkeley, mono lingual speakers come out. >> reporter: information is key to combat vaccine hesitancy. the latest california data shows that latinos have been disproportionately impacted by this virus. latinos makeup 39% of the population, and 55% of

under 19,000. this is below the daily average for the past two weeks. tonight there is concern on two bay area college campuses due to covid-19. there has been the surge in cases at u.c. berkeley and complaints over santa clara university students holding large parties. abc7 news reporter j.r. stone is in the south bay with all the new details. >> reporter: this block near santa clara university is quiet and dark right now, but students say a week ago there was a massive fraternity party held in a backyard here. >> it was around 70 to 100 students, and was hosted by a fraternity. >> there is a huge party at one of the houses and there's just a picture going around with probably close to 200 people in the backyard. >> reporter: in a statement, santa clara university calls the recent party a blatant disregard for health directives and has threatened suspensions and $500 fines. >> people tend to forget the

severity of the situation, and so i think that's why a lot of students have tried to remind their peers that, hey, this is not a joke. >> reporter: the recent fraternity party near scu came just days after the university canceled plans to bring students back to campus for housing and in-person classes. one student told us off-camera, with tuition here above $50,000 a year, there is frustration. another said some feel a sense of safety with the free covid tests offered to students. >> so people think like, oh, yeah, if i get tested and it comes out negative then i'm fine and i'm hoping everyone else is doing that. they're fine. you can't really look at it that way. >> reporter: those we talked with do agree that since party pictures on this block surfaced, there's been a stronger sense of concern going forward. j.r. stone, abc7 news. >> now to that surge in covid cases at u.c. berkeley, the university's online dashboard shows that 44 people tested

positive yesterday, which is about 3% of the tests that were analyzed. all residential students have been notified and told not to attend indoor gatherings. the university is conducting contact tracing and isolating students who have been exposed. for many bay area families, it was a weekend to venture out of the house, to try and recapture a glimpse of normal life. some beloved attractions like the san francisco zoo reopened this weekend and the oakland zoo plans to welcome visitors back in a few days. abc7 news reporter cornell barnard spoke with families about how they plan to have fun safely. >> we're super happy. >> reporter: josh gordon brought his son zack to the san francisco zoo which reopened to the public this weekend after california's stay-at-home order was recently lifted. >> the animals, it's always fun to see them. jack gets excited seeing the animals. he loves it. >> reporter: covid-19 safety protocols are in place for visitors. >> i felt very safe, fun to see the animals again, particularly the lemurs.

an 84-year-old man has died after a horrific daytime attack in san francisco's anza vista neighborhood. a warning, the video abc7 news has obtained is disturbing to watch. police say the suspect attacked the senior on fortuna avenue monday morning. it is unclear what made that attack. he was taken to the hospital for life-threatening injuries and died on saturday. police arrested the 19-year-old watson yesterday along with the woman they say he fled with. s.f.p.d. is asking anyone with information about the incident to call their anonymous tip line. and also new at 11:00, business owners in oakland's cinatown are raising the alarm after a series of robberies and attacks, many targeting women

and seniors all caught on camera. the president of oakland's chinatown chamber of commerce says he's talked to at least 20 business owners in the past two weeks who have been attacked themselves or had it happen to customers. carl chan says the increase in crime is keeping shoppers away at a time when the neighborhood is suffering because of the pandemic. he is now urging people to speak out. >> what you're seeing is only a fraction of what had happened in chinatown. many of them are not willing to report it. nothing has been happening. but we have been trying to encourage them, please, report the incidents. >> it does make a difference. chan is holding a press conference this week to address the incidents and to ask for more resources, such as cameras and extra police patrols. to developing news now, suspects accused of attacking jack palladino may have been trying to steal his camera after

the famed private eye took photos of them committing the crime. that is according to the chronicle. he was dragged in front of his home. the 76-year-old has been taken off life support but is still unconscious. family members say he is not expected to survive. two men have been arrested for that attack. the final column was published in today's san francisco chronicle. phil spent 35 years at the paper as a san francisco insider. we have some video of his final days inside the chronicle newsroom at 5th and mission, but that's not what was on his mind this morning on abc7 news. he looked into the future and that includes the effort to recall governor gavin newsom. >> teachers, are they going to be at the front, are they not going to be at the front? when are schools going to open? all of this is there in there. and as you said, it has sht bn' clear. if it doesn't clear up, i think governor gavin newsom is going to be in 2rutrouble. that's what's going to get people to sign the petition.

gifts since the stay-at-home order was lifted. closer to home, rain is on the way and once again, drew has a little bit more on the timing. hi, drew. >> hi, dion. yeah, we're tracking rain here and even more snow coming to the sierra. let's talk about the rain here first. live doppler 7 showing you the active sweep. we do have some very light returns, especially around cloverdale and ukiah tonight. it's not out of the question, we may find ourselves with a little bit of drizzle in the northern portion of the north bay. but the main event really holds off until tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow evening. the cold front we're tracking is about to move on shore near eureka tomorrow night. it's still 230 miles away from san francisco. so it has some time as it marches south, but it will bring us some widespread beneficial rain. ahead of that front today, it was mild out there this afternoon. we made it well into the 60s in a lot of spots, and this evening we're slowly falling through the 50s at this late hour. so on the storm impact scale

we'll track that rain tomorrow afternoon/evening. lasting into tuesday with the light storm on the storm impact scale. we'll track light to moderate showers. the ee indicationoccasional dow it won't be damaging wind gusts, likely 20, 30 miles per hour. let's time-out the rain. tomorrow it will stop at lunchtime. noon on monday. the rain is still confined to cloverdale and ukiah first thing on monday. it's into the afternoon that front begins to move south throughout the north bay. so by 4:00 p.m., our attention is still focused in north bay. after the sun goes down, we'll find that front moving south. so by 8:00, 9:00 p.m., that's where we can expect some showers in san francisco, in oakland, along the peninsula as well. and then it's close to midnight and early tuesday morning that that rain will move into the south bay. and that front will be very slow to exit the south bay. it won't be like the atmospheric river we had last week where the south bay ended up with several

inches of rain. this is more on the order of half an inch of rain, but it will be a pretty rainy start to our tuesday in the south bay. so overall rainfall estimates, a good estimate is anywhere from about a quarter to three quarters of an inch of rainfall with this front. in our hills and especially in the santa cruz mountains, not out of the question it will reach an inch if not slightly over an inch of rainfall. here's that winter storm watch we're tracking starting tomorrow night. above 6000'1" to 2 feet of fresh powder coming on our highest peaks. we could see 3 feet of snow. we're going to get beneficial snow out of the storm as well. back here at home, overnight tonight we'll find a blend of stars and clouds out there. overall temperatures will slowly fall into the 40s first thing tomorrow morning. now, tomorrow in the day mainly cloudy weather. we'll find the showers first in the north bay in the afternoon. and then sliding south throughout the evening. but out of that front, it's mild with upper 50s to mid 60s. the accuweather seven-day

our abc7 news east bay community journalist melissa pixcar has the story from dublin. >> these are cats. they are robotics. they come in a variety of colors. they purrs. they move their heads, open and close their eyes. >> meow. >> they are really realistic. >> reporter: hope hospice is nonprofit in dublin. >> and we serve the greater tri-valley area. so we provide services for a variety of hospice-appropriate patients. the majority happen to be dementia patients. unfortunately, with the on set of covid back in march, we have covered that our living with dementia patients are feeling a bunch of different things. there's a lot of confusion. there's a lot of agitation that's associated with that. along with the loneliness and social isolation. >> we've purchased our first 20 cats from joy for all companion

pets. the decision behind purchasing the pets was kind of a pivotal program from the volunteer department, and they have proved extremely successful with the patients. >> our hope is that these little connections that our living with dementia patients can make with some of these cats are creating little moments of joy. we know we can't completely get rid of the social isolation. what we can do is take the opportunities that we find to create little moments of joy for them in their lives. >> meow. meow. >> they sure are cute and realistic. i don't know, drew, do you think dappur would do well with a robotic cat at home? >> i think dapper would chase it all around. maybe i should get one to let him be busy a couple hours instead of playing fetch outside. what's happening the next couple days, dion, we have rain coming our way, but it will be beneficial. it's not going to be intense and

won't cause any flooding concerns thankfully. storm impact scale is a level 1 light system tomorrow afternoon evening into tuesday. with scattered downpours and winds gusting 20 to 30 miles per hour. tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m., we find that rain in the north bay, and then later on in the evening, that cold front is going to move south. so by 8:00, 9:00 p.m. we expect the showers moving into the city, into the east bay, and then close tore midnight we'll find that rain moving into the south bay. so it will linger into part of our tuesday, but nonetheless we'll find the showers over the next 48 hours. overnight tonight i'll find a blend of stars and clouds, temperatures settling in the 40s first thing in the morning. highs tomorrow in the upper 50s to mid 60s with that rain moving in. starting in the north bay and sliding south throughout the evening. so the accuweather seven-day forecast will find those showers tomorrow night into tuesday, and then we start to dry out. that dry pattern really stays with us for the rest of the seven-day forecast. and along with that dry weather we'll warm up back into the 60s next weekend, dion.
