the record to decide whether to defend a congresswoman who has pushed racist and anti-semitic conspiracy theories. overnight republicans on capitol hill meeting privately to air out their differences. >> air their grievances. we're very candid and honest with each other, but address this as a family. >> reporter: it comes as democrats plan to vote in just hours to strip congressman marjorie taylor greene of her committee assignments. the freshman lawmaker has been under fire for making outlandish and false statements claiming that school shootings were staged and questioning the 9/11 attacks. >> it's odd there's never any evidence shown for a plane in the pentagon. >> reporter: republican leaders say greene apologized last night for those comments. >> she came inside our conference and announced them as well. she said she was wrong. she has reached out in other ways and forms and nothing that she said has been based upon since she's been a member of congress. >> reporter: but greene has not publicly apologized saying this on tuesday -- >> i have said things i shouldn't say at some time or

another, but i don't think i have anything to apologize for. >> reporter: democrats announced today's vote after house minority leader kevin mccarthy decided not to remove greene from the house education and labor and budget committees. >> if we are now going to start judging what other members have said before they're even members of congress, i think it will be a hard time for the democrats to place anybody on committee. >> reporter: kevin mccarthy saying it's a double standard mentioning ilhan omar critical of israel and steve king, the former republican congressman who was removed from his committees in 2019 after racist remarks. >> when omar made her comments, kept her on foreign affairs. we removed king when he made comments as a member of congress. what's unfortunate is that democrats don't keep that same standard. >> reporter: congresswoman liz cheney will keep her leadership role within the republican party. cheney has been under pressure from trump loyalists after voting to impeach the former president. a majority of republicans in the

indicted in the u.s. capitol attack. they're charged with scrawling the words murder the media on the door and conspiring to block congress from certifying the election. ethan nordean is one of those charged. canada has designated the proud boys as a terrorist group. the self-described qanon shaman is getting organic food behind bars. his lawyer says jacob chansley went nine days without eating. the grudge -- judge granted the request on religious grounds. now the latest on the pandemic. even though coronavirus cases are dropping, the cdc is forecasting up to 85,000 more deaths in the next three weeks. but there is a new vaccine development. this morning a hopeful sign in the fight against covid-19. british scientists say the vaccine from oxford, astrazeneca, appears to reduce transmission of the virus. >> this is some really exciting news off the bat. >> reporter: evidence shows the vaccines currently in the u.s. from pfizer to moderna prevent the virus. >> previous studies were showing

it was preventing severe illness or mild symptoms, but if this could prevent people from passing the virus, that would be a very big deal. >> reporter: data from astrazeneca suggests spacing out doses so more doses could be given to people right away and shows a single dose with 76% effective at protecting against the environment for up to three months. that increased to 82% with a second shot given after 12 weeks. the currency vaccines in the u.s. require a much shorter period. 21 days for the shots from pfizer and 28 between moderna. the study has not been peer reviewed meaning scientists outside the trials still have to verify the results. now it appears the group most responsible for spreading the virus is in the back of the line for the vaccine. researchers found people between the ages of 20 and responsible for spreading more than 70% of covid cases in the u.s. last year. >> that young population is a large driving fort. a lot of them got quarantine fatigue and a lot are

out in the workforce and are potentially in contact with a lot of people. in order for us to get to herd immunity we have to vaccine all young people. >> reporter: in the meantime, schools are under increasing pressure to re-open. the city of san francisco is suing its own school district in an effort to bring back in-person classes after the cdc said schools can safely re-open even before all teachers are vaccinated. >> there is increasing data to suggest that schools can safely re-open and that that safe re-opening does not suggest that teachers need to be vaccinated. >> reporter: hospitalizations and cases are down nationwide. and while dr. anthony fauci believes we're headed in the right direction, he says the risk of more contagious variants of the virus popping up is a major concern. >> bottom line, we have to get the entire world vaccinated, not just our own country. otherwise, every year there will be another threat as more mutants come by. >> the fda is not expected to consider the astrazeneca vaccine until at least next month. for the first time a

consulting firm will pay for its role in the opioid crisis. in a $573 million settlement, dozens of states have sued mckinsey & company claiming the firm advised drugmakers on how to boost sales. most of the money will help fight the opioid crisis. and we turn now to ohio where the former columbus police officer who shot and killed a black man has been with murder. adam coy was among the officers responding to a noise complaint when he heard andre hill -- excuse me, when he shot andre hill who was not armed but was carrying a cell phone. video shows coy standing over hill for five minutes without giving first aid. the attorney general says the indictment sends a message. >> the vast virtue of law enforcement is diminished by the very few bad actors among its ranks, and only by holding a bad actor accountable can that virtue be sustained. here's what i mean in plain english, same rules for everybody.

>> reporter: his downfall coming after video obtained by tmz showed wallen outside his nashville home using profanity and directing a racial slur toward a person in his group. wallen released a statement saying, i'm embarrassed and sorry. there are no excuses to use this type of language ever. i want to sincerely apologize for using the word. fellow musicians are sounding off. black country singer mickey guyton tweeted, when i read comments saying, this is not who we are, i laugh because this is exactly who country music is. i've witnessed it for ten years. this isn't the first negative press for wallen. he was arrested last year for public intoxication and disorderly conduct after getting kicked out of a bar. and in october "saturday night live" dropped him from a performance after video showed him violating covid-19 protocols, partying with fans. he was later invited back on the show, but this latest incident appears to be his biggest setback yet. >> how do you give someone a crash course in maturity as well

as racial sensitivity? i don't know that happens without a lot of time going by. >> reporter: the academy of country music says wallen is no longer eligible for an award at their ceremony in april. kenneth, mona. >> andrea, thank you. new details about the market mayhem on wall street. one of the early cheerleaders for the shares in gamestop now has the attention of regulators. they want to know if keith gill broke any rules by touting gamestop on social media while also working as a securities broker for mass mutual. the company says it was not aware of his online activities. just days before the super bowl the kansas city chiefs had a close shave with disaster. 20 members of the team including patrick mahomes were scheduled to get haircuts from the same barber. the cutting had started when the barber found out he tested positive for covid. two players were declared close contacts and will be monitored. lineman daniel kilgore was in the chair when the barber had to stop cutting. he poked fun posting this picture saying new profile pic.

checking the top stories, the house is voting today on whether to remove congressman marjorie taylor greene from her committees after republicans decline to punish her after she supported conspiracy theories and endorsing political violence. meanwhile, congresswoman liz cheney remains the number three republican in the house after surviving an attempt to strip her of her leadership role because she voted to impeach president trump. prosecutors in wisconsin want to rearrest kyle rittenhouse with a higher bond. he shot and killed two protesters in kenosha and say he violated his bail. emergency crews in eagle, colorado, have found the bodies of three men killed in an avalanche. crews were guided by beacons the skiers were wearing. all three served as local government officials. today's weather, rain and snow in the pacific northwest. blizzard conditions in iowa. snow on the way for wisconsin and michigan.
