mid-50s at noon. mid to upper 50s at 4:00. back to the upper 40s to low at 7:00. warm weekend, still on the menu, i'll have details coming up. let's get over to jobina, following an accident in the >> thank you, mike. san jose police are on the scene of this deadly crash in san jose. it happened just before 2:00 this morning near santa theresa boulevard and chantilly lane. both directions of santa teresa boulevard are close nod now. if you drive in this area, we're told traffic could be impacted for several hours. we do not have many details about the crash. we do know that one car was involved here. kumasi? as we work to build a bette focusing on education. a f parents will b san franciscn to sue the school district in an effort to get students back in the classroom. abc 7 reporter amy hollyfield live at the school district

headquarters with more on how parents are feeling about this move. amy? >> reporter: the school district calls this lawsuit a distraction. we're going to hear more about that distraction today with parents holding a press conference later today to show their support for this lawsuit. they are grateful that it has happened. the group is called decreasing the distance and says it is cautiously optimistic about this new direction city leaders are headed. they're hoping this willet kids homes and into the classroom. parents we talked to yesterday about the lawsuit say distance learning is just not working. >> it's disappointing. it's frustrating. it's aggravating. and it is tiring. >> yeah, i mean, if anyone thinks that 6 or 7-year-olds can learn to read and write over themselves. this is a tactile learning experience that needs to beomiz. no teacher can be expected to understand what 20 little boxes

on their screen are absorbing over zoom. >> mayor london breed agrees. she said in her public. city leaders pointed out when they were announcing their lawsuit that 16,000 private school kids have returned to in person learning in san francisco. and they want to see public schools open too. well, the school district responded to being sued by calling the lawsuit frivolous, petty, and embarrassing with the superintendent saying they do have a reopening plan. they just need an agreement with the teachers union. live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. new details about how blue shield plans to take over vacc distribution. blue shield ceo paul markovich says it involves improved communication, data and tracking. the company plans to introduce their new network later this month and phase two will be accelerating the rate of vaccination. >> we believe there is going to be more vaccine coming in the

coming months. we need to be ready for it.st shie tructure to keeck o the vaccines. california will also use performance-based payments to blue shield to ensure equitable distribution of vaccine. bay area healthcare leaders are pushing to privatize covid vaccines for people 65 and up. right now marin, napa, santa cruz and solano counties say they're prioritizing rez debtin over 75. others have expanded to 65 and up. this and is in addition to focusing on vaccinating healthcare workers. workers are rallying to demand they get priority when it comes to covid vaccines. multiple state wide rallies are going to be held. they come after governor newsom changed the state's vaccine rollout plan to prioritize older age groups. airport workers are urging the

governor to put them back on the list. they say they are risking their lives every day to provide essential services. there is a new lawsuit against a mandate to pay grocery store workers more in oakland. the california grocery association filed a suit saying the mandate violates city and state laws. oakland city council passed a $5 an hour hazard pay increase for workers at large grocery stores. the grocers group says stores will have to pass the cost to customers, cut employees or hours, or just close altogether. a critical vote on capitol hill today house lawmakers decide whether to take action against congresswoman marjorie taylor greene for pushing conspiracy theories. jobina, so far it looks like a lot of republicans are standing by her. >> they definitely are, reggie. taylor greene has pushed baseless qanon and 9/11 conspiracies, she even at one point suggested that nancy stripeader xecuted.de wle

kevin mccarthy decided not to do last knight. after republicans met in private. republican leaders say taylor greene apologized for those comments that were made before she was elected. >> if we're now going to start judging what other members have said before they're even members of congress, i think it is going to be a hard time for the democrats to place anybody on committee. >> and also last night, house republicans voted in favor of keeping congresswoman liz cheney in power. cheney has been under pressure after voting to impeach former president trump. as for today's vote, democrats hold the majority in the house, so if all democrats vote against her, she will lose her committee assignment. that is taylor greene, speaking of there, reggie. >> thank you, jobina. a washington tradition is under way this morning. here is a live look at the national prayer breakfast, being held online this year because of the pandemic. in his address ten minutes ago, president biden called for unity across political parties. he recalled he campaigned as

south beach camera, mitering lights came on at the toll plaza at 6:07. crowded as people make their way to san francisco, but things are moving. south bay, checking out san jose and our 280 camera in the area. we don't check out this one because it is not as busy. i wanted to give another view of what's going on in our e overal here, want to point out two things, one of course is the normal slowdown coming out of tracy, but we do also have a crash that has cleared on westbound 84 before the toll plaza, dumbarton bridge. also to a new crash that we do have in richmond on westbound 80 before el portal drive, between a big rig and one other car. you may run into a slowdown here. reggie? >> thank you. electronics stores closing in san francisco indefinitely. the owners say they are fed up with a series of thefts. the most recent caught on camera here at the beta store in hayes valley. an armed robbery yesterday afternoon. the security video shows the thief riding in on the scooter

before snatching things up. the hayes valley and union square stores will close for now. police and the mayor's office are planning to meet with the owner of those stores. benefitsdevelopments in theidart california supreme court has th to overturn prop 22. the ballot measure which passed keeps drivers as independent contractors. the opposition argues that the prop limits the power of state governments to grant workers the right to organize. it also excludes drivers from being eligible for workers comp. the case could still be filed, though, in a lower court. coming up, the tech executive who is backing down. after setting up a website that showed he intended to run for governor. and jobina's one on one interhave with grammy winning

arrested a man with purple hair after bringing a loaded gun to the westfield valley mall. police say they got a tip from the santa cruz county sheriff's office about a man who was streaming on snapchat. he apparently talked about shooting up the mall. police tracked this guy down and within 45 minutes they found him at the mall, with a gun. officers say he did have a distinct look. again, with that purple hair. nobody got hurt. new at 6:00, it appears that billionaire venture cap will not be running if the governor is recalled. he said he's not ready to do all that. palihapitiya said he needs to focus on his business and doesn't think it is worth figuring out what the conflict of interest laws are and everything he would have to do. now, last week he tweeted it is on, with a #recallgavinnewsom

here is a look at san jose, it is clear at 46 degrees. sunny and dry today, grab the sunglasses, cool, calmer, cooler tonight, we'll have more pockets of fog with -- because the breezes will back off. that will keep us from being foggy. get outside this week, our warmest afternoons are coming at us saturday and sunday. two areas of high pressure pushing the storm track back up to the north where it has been most of the winter. and more typical area for it to be during a la nina this season. right now, we're looking at sunshine though and that's going to help warm this dry air as the breezes will back off this afternoon from mid to upper 50s, half moon bay through most of the bay. santa cruz will hit 60 because of the offshore breeze, so will the south bay, even some 62 degree temperatures up in the north bay for our warm spots. outdoor dining, 52 to 57 with the sun up at 5:00. once it sets, we drop down to the low to mid-50s. upper 40s, low 50s at 7:00.

happening today, san francisco's recreation and park department will discuss a proposal to keep the high ferris wheel at golden gate park for another four years. officials want to keep it until march of 2025. the proposal will be heard by the operations committee before it goes to the historic preservation commission. the sky star observation wheel gate park's 150th anniversary, but postponed because of the pandemic. san francisco's famous cliff house building could be home to a restaurant again. the restaurant just recently closed after they couldn't reach a lease deal with the national park service, which owns that building. the chronicle is reporting the park service is looking for another restaurant to move in. it is okay to dance. that's the message from jamaal joseph who grew up dancing in oakland. he worked with beyonce on her homecoming concert. now he's out with a children's

mid-50s at noon with a total sunshine. mid to upper 50s, back to average by 4:00. and if you're heading out this evening, we'll quickly fall into the 40s by 7:00. everywhere except for the bay, we're 51. that's close enough, still jacket weather if you're heading out. we'll take a look at some 70 degree highs this weekend. that's coming up. let's get back to reggie for our first story of the day. an extreme step never seen before in the state, possibly the whole country. san francisco suing its own school district to try to force in person learning. today some parents are going to be getting together to applaud the city's legal fight. education is one of the focuses of building a better bay area, abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live at district headquarters. amy? >> reporter: hi there. the school district wasn't shy about its opinion, calling the lawsuit frivolous, petty and a distraction. but some parents are going to speak out again today to make t ll.their opinions stay in the a group of parents calling

themselves decreasing the distance will hold a press conference today, applauding city leaders for trying to get kids out of isolation in their homes and into their classrooms. we also checked in with legal scholars wanting to hear what they thought about the lawsuit. >> to have a city take the move of actually suing the school district, that's the first of its kind as far as i know. >> i think this is meant to signal that the city side of things, the city and county side of things, is on the side of, come on, it is time to reopen already. >> reporter: the school district did have a plan to reopen for its 55,000 students at the end of january. but canceled those plans because city attorney says reopening schools needs to be the board and the district's singular purpose, pointing out 113 private and parochial schools have figured it out in san francisco, and have reopened.

the superintendent says they have a reopening plan, they just lack an agreement with the teachers union. parents who are speaking out today really say they are hoping that this lawsuit will force officials to get around those issues and open the schools. live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. tnk you, amy. the director of the cdc says vaccinating teachers is not a prerequisite for safe reopening of schools. >> there is increasing data to suggest that schools can safely reopen and that that safe reopening does not suggest that teachers need to be vaccinated in order to reopen safely. >> president biden's press secretary reiterated the cdc has not yet released official guidance on the vaccination of teachers as it relates to reopening schools. she said the administration hopes to see that soon. a new study does find weekly rapid covid-19 testing can cut infections by 50% in high schools, and 35% in primary

schools. they made 20,000 tests available in six pilot cities including l.a. and washington, d.c. the study also found that social distancing reduces transmission roughly 88%, making that more effective than weekly testing. the cdc is forecasting up to 85,000 more people could die from coronavirus over the next three weeks. that comes as we positive milestone in vaccine distribution. here is abc news reporter faith abubey. >> reporter: for first time in the coronavirus pandemic, the number of americans receiving the first dose of the covid vaccine is greater than the number of reported cases of covid in the u.s., but vaccine demand still outpacing supply. >> it is heart breaking when people want the vaccine and are unable to get it. >> reporter: the u.s. sees some glimmers of hope in the fight against the virus. nationwide, seven-day averages of hospitalizations and deaths are declining.

the covid tracking project calling the data hopeful and devastating. saying states are still reporting an average of 3,000 people dying every day. on the front lines, this nurse tearing up, recalling the hard conversations happening in icus. >> am i going to die, am i going to make it out of here, am i going to get to see my family again? and you have to tell them that we're fighting as hard as we can and we're doing what we can and they're fighting as hard as they can, but the chances are low. >> reporter: health officials still worried new variants spreading across the country could reverse any progress made in the last few weeks. >> i'm not an alarmist, but this is as scared as i've been since the beginning of the pandemic. >> reporter: as we head into the super bowl weekend, the cdc is warning americans to avoid large gatherings. dr. anthony fauci adding, lay low and cool it. faith abubey, abc news, washington.

happening today, the san francisco board of supervisors will consider an emergency ordinance for a covid-19 vaccination plan. last week supervisor matt haney introduced the vaccinate sf plan and it will require the city's department of health to submit a written plan to vaccinate all san frcian sri vaccination data and central portal for vaccination appointments. we're expecting new details today about the vaccination site at the moscone center. the mayor will join kaiser officials at a news conference at 11:00 this morning. appointments can be made starting tomorrow through the state's my turn website, and it will serve bay area residents age 65 and up as well as healthcare workers. also a federal mask vaccination site that is going up at the oakland coliseum, part of a pilot program to help speed up distribution. starting next week, eligibility for the covid-19 vaccine in alameda county will expand to phase 1b. once the site opens, that means seniors 65 and up and essential workers will be able to receive

the vaccine. >> the whole idea is to speed up the through put, the efficiency, maintain an equitable lens in helication and distribution of the vaccine. >> the site will be operated by the state in partnership with the federal government. it is part of an effort by the biden administration to establish 100 vaccination sites nationwide in the president's first 100 days in office. state wide, about 60% of vaccine doses delivered to california have been given out. we're monitoring progress with our vaccine tracker, which is at abc 7 news.com. the justice department is moving forward with prosecuting two prominent proud boys members who faced conspiracy charges over last month's riots at the u.s. capitol. jobina fortson joining us with the details on this. >> thank you, kumasi. the two proud boys members are join i

joining -- as the sergeant at arms of the group. seattle chapter was charged yesterday with obstructing congress as well as aiding and abetting as part of the mob that stormed the building on january 6th. a separate grand jury indictment namedx lr o t cpt aicholafte prosecutors say those two men raised money for the effort before the insurrection. meanwhile, the capitol incarcerated. his attorney told a d.c. federal judge that his client is not getting enough organic food in jail and had not eaten in more than a week. the judge ordered that should receive organic food while in jail. he said nonorganic food was against his religion and sickened him. still ahead, the global manufacturing company that is now hiring in several bay area cities, jobina will be back with today's featured job.

here is a look at what's going on in the peninsula. 38, san mateo. san bruno, 51. we have 38 redwood city. we go from 35 in santa rosa to 46 in san jose. 37 san ramon. 44 in oakland right now. south on 68, the0, there was a t of fog around caldecott but i think the breezes took most of that away. other than the breezes, nice day to commute, weatherwise. let's look at the future. this is why i'm not very optimistic about the drought improvement to continue. in fact, we may fall back as we go through the week. we know it is going to be warm and dry. a dry cold front and on shore breeze will bring us cooler weather, bring us back to average monday. you can see by tuesday to wednesday, the medium range trying to bring us a chance of rain, height pressure is so uss track back to the north. if we receive any rain out of this system wednesday, it will

purpose acquisition company which means that 23 and m is now availablg on new york stock exchange under the ticker symbol let's he new k exchange now as trading gets under way this morning. you see we're up right now about 140 points. the u.s. labor department has just released the latest weekly jobless claims and it shows a slight decrease in unemployment claims during the ongoing covid-19 pandemic. 779,000 people applied for unemployment benefits last week. that's a decrease of 33,000 from the week before. economists forecasted about 830,000. more than 4.5 million people are still receiving state unemployment benefits, that is down, though, just nearly 4.8 million the week before. as part of our effort to help build a better bay area, we want to have people who have lost their jobs during the pandemic find some open positions and that is what jobina is very good at. she has a business with more than a dozen open jobs in the
