they're going to start here with 1500 doses today but they do hope to see that number go up in the next few weeks for sure. they have set up so they can see up to 10,000 people a day. that's once the state starts sending more doses. now, this is for people over the age of 65 or health care workers. officials say if the state starts sending more doses, they feel like the goal of vaccinating all san francisco residents by the end of june could be a reality. the mayor says they are acting with urgency because they know how important this operation is to getting everyone back to normal. >> our children are not back in school. peopleot bt the jobs. we know how critical the rollout of this program is. >> reporter: a vaccine site at golden gate field in berkeley is also open today to alameda

county residents 75 and older by appointment only. it's open this weekend, but officials would like to see it up as a long-term that also will depend on supply. the plan is for moscow knee to be open indefinitely. this is a partnership with kaiser but you don't have to be a kaiser patient. you just have to get an appointment. we have a link to that site on abc7news.com. johnson & johnson has app applied for emergency use authorization of its vaccine. it has shown to be 66% effective. if authorization is granted, shots could start as soon as march 1st. there are two advantages to johnson & johnson's vaccine. it only requires one shot and it can be stored in regular

refrigerators. the race to vaccinate is now also a race against new covid variants. the faster-spreading variant first detected in the u.k. has already been detected here in the bay area. helix is a company that's doing covid testing and it has identified 105 cases of the variant so far, most of those in southern california. out of the six cases in alameda county, those are found this week. two were uc berke berke >> what we saw in the last week roughly was a doubling in the southern california and florida region. i would expect in the next couple weekshe we as much in th area, but given the traffic between the two regions, it's just a matter of time. the scarcity in supply has led napa county to stop

vaccinating residents with their first doses. according to the chronicle, the county started dipping into doses of those who have already had their first shot. to make sure everyone can get their second dose, the county has temporarily stopped vaccinating first time residents all because of that limited supply. all santa clara county residents 65 and up can get vaccinated. it it allows health care workers and anyone 65 and up to receive a vaccine anywhere in the county regardless of insurance or health care provider. officials also announced they are prioritizing people living in areas with high infection rates like east san jose. to schedule a vaccine appointment, visit sccfreevax.org.

this morning president biden's $1.9 billion covid relief bill is closer to becoming law. vice president kamala harris cast the tie-breaking vote to block the threat of a republican filibuster. >> the yays are 50, the nays are 50. the vice president votes in the affirmative and the concurrent resolution as amended is adopted. >> the resolution passed along party lines and after hours of debate and voting on amendments. now it goes back to the house llif the senate will mended likely revisit the bill after former president trump's second impeachment trial scheduled for next week. now to washington where a fiercely divided house overnight tossed qanon sympathizing congresswoman marjorie taylor greene off of her committee assignments. this was an unprecedented move in modern political history.

picture of her colleagues. >> i urge my colleague to look at that image and tell me what message you think it sends. >> reporter: the move to punish greene for her qanon-inspired and basically claims led january 6th insurrection. more than 180 rioters are now charged, at least 19 tied to extremist groups and at least a dozen support qanon conspiracy theories. 23 of those arrested in the capitol insurrection so far served in the military, two of them still on active duty. former president trump does not want to testify under oath during hisment trial. he rejected a request from democrats. house democrats want trump to respond to their accusations he incited a mob to storm the capitol last month. trump's lawyer has called the request a, quote, public relations stunt.

police have arrested a man accused of causing a deadly crash involving eight cars in san francisco. it appears that this isn't the first time the suspect has gotten into trouble with the law. a total of eight cars collided on thursday morning. and the crash claimed the life of 26-year-old who leaves behind a wife and 3-year-old son. witnesses tell abc 7 news that the driver of an suv ran a red light. that led to an eight-car accident near san francisco

oakland. a formal announcement naming him as chief is expected in a few days. he replaces the former chief who was ousted from the department last year. the nba will strengthen mask requirements for players, coaches and staff. they'll have players are allowed to sit by themselvesrece leaving games to their breath. once they do, they're supposed to return to the bench area and wear a mask. all players were required to wear a mask but they could choose whether to wear a cloth or surgical mask. expedia just did its annual vacation deprivation survey. they found more than 80% of people place more value on vacation now than ever. more than 60% plan to spend more money on futureut rece to cancel at least one vacation because of the

vaccines. the mid february timeline for them to get the vaccine is fluid at best now that people aged 65 and up have been given first priority. quote, we are continuing to push decisionmakers on the need for law enforcement personnel to get vaccinated as a public health and safety precaution. last week unions representing oakland police officers and alameda county sheriff's departments demanded to know why they haven't received the vaccine as they were promised. the data for johnson & johnson's vaccine will soon be under review for emergency use authorization. there are big benefits for the johnson & johnson candidate. it's one dose and does not require deep freezers, just a refrigerator. the hope is that it can help get vaccines out more quickly in time to slow or stop the new variants. >> this additional vaccine, because of the way it's stored, could really be a game changer in getting the most vulnerable

this moves trader joes even closer in line with what cities have passed, mandated pay boosts for grocery store workers including some cities here in the bay area. this morning union leaders will present their plan for the san francisco unified school district to return to in-person learning. they have scheduled a virtual press conference to talk about health and safety protocols they are proposing as negotiations continue with the school district. it include guidance for vaccines, ppe and disinfecting protocols. the city of san francisco sued the school district in an effort to get students back in the classroom. a new campaign wants called just say hello, started by a southern california public relations executive. the goal is simple, say hello to
