and thank you so much for joining us. i'm dion lim. the father is thanking first responders and the public for helping to find his children. they were reunited about four and a half hours after their dad's van was hijacked. it happened last night in san francisco's pacific heights neighborhood. that's where we find abc7 news news reporter cornell bernard, and this could have taken a much worse turn. cornell? >> yeah, you're right about that, dion. this is really the best news ever for this family. this is the neighborhood where doordash delivery driver jeffrey fang was making a delivery when his minivan was carjacked with the kids inside. luckily the kids are okay, andnf people. >> god, thank god, i just thank god. >> reporter: jeffrey fang was overjoyed to hold his son, 1-year-old shawn who was kidnapped with his sister winifred saturday night. both kids are safe and back

home. >> when we heard, it was -- it was just elation. >> reporter: both children found okay in san francisco's bayview district and taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation. they were spotted inside their dad's silver honda odyssey minivan which was hijacked in pacific heights while jeffrey fang was making a doordash delivery about 8:45. >> they don't know what's going on. they just speak mandarin only. >> reporter: he surprised the suspect inside his vehicle, but they got away. >> i heard a scream. i thought it was the tv. wanted to remain anonymous helped look for the minivan. >> we started looking down the hilton side streaks, literally stopping at every silver minivan to check the license plate. >> reporter: a large police search began. info about the kids was tweeted out and this amber alert was issued to cell phones across the bay area. about four hours later, the kids were found. >> we found the kids. they found the car and the kids

are all right. >> reporter: the suspects in the case remain at large. san francisco police chief william scott made this personal appeal. >> to the people that were involved in this to turn themselves in, because this crime was extremely, extremely serious. to kidnap a vehicle, to take two small babies away from their parents. >> reporter: in a statement, the ceo of doordash said we were appalled by this brazen and heinous act and are actively working with law enforcement. as a father myself, i can only imagine how terrifying this incident must have been for mr. fang and his family. a gofundme account has now been established for the fang family. >> the response from the neighborhood, the bay area, the city warms my heart. there is still humanity in all of us, i guess. . >> we just checked. the gofundme account is up to $85,000 for the family. jeffrey fang says that money is

going to help a lot. he wants to take a little time from delivering food to recover from this incredible ordeal. cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> so many shows of support from really all over the bay area. cornell, many thanks. >> for sure. moving on, as we work to help build a better bay area, one of the areas we're focusing on is education. san francisco took a big step forward today in reopening school campuses. the teachers union reached a tentative agreement with the school district. the issue has been contentious, and the city actually sued the school board on wednesday over a reopening plan. schools will reopen if the city reaches the red tier and on campus staff are vaccinated. if san francisco goes to the orange tier, teachers and staff would be back on campus without being immunized. the school board will vote on the deal february 16th. key metrics in california. those show things are improving around the state. the number of people hospitalized has dropped below 12,000. a month ago, it was nearly 22,000.

the seven-day positivity rate keeps on falling and now stands at 5.4%. this is a good indicator of the spread of the virus. the state did report more than 15,000 newly diagnosed cases today, which is about the daily average for the past week. new developments now. a former private equity executive from mill valley has agreed to plead guilty in the college admissions bribery scandal. william mclashen will plead guilty. prosecutors say he paid confessed ringleader rick singer $50,000 to bribe a proctor to change his son's wrong answers on the a.c.t. under the deal, mclashen will spend three months in prison, pay a quarter million fine and do 250 hours community service. oakland city council president nikolai bass is urging oakland to support chinatown safety after several violent assaults in seniors.

in one accident reported on, a 91-year-old man was knocked to the ground in broad daylight. it's one of more than 20 assaults and robberies the chinatown chamber of commerce has documented in the neighborhood in recent weeks. councilwoman bass is calling for community safety walks. >> we are creating a visible presence of eyes on the streets, feet on the street to make sure that we're taking care of each other. >> the oakland police department says a person of interest has been in custody since last monday. he is also connected to two other assaults on chinatown seniors the same day. it is a changing of the guard at the oakland police department. the city's new chief of police, leronne armstrong will take the reins tomorrow, and that means saying farewell to the interim chief, susan mannheimer. the department showed a photo of armstrong who is being promoted from deputy chief and mannheimer along with a celebratory cake. the message on the cake reads "thank you chief for never giving up."

george shultz died yesterday at his home on the stanford campus. he was 100. schultz's government in and out of government casts a long shadow, and he exemplifies the phrase "public service." economist, scholar, businessman, diplomat. george pratt schultz had enough credentials for several lifetimes. one of the first a u.s. marine. former abc7 news anchor eric thomas interviewed schultz in 2016. >> you got to mean what you say and follow through, and i got that from the marine corps. >> reporter: the new york native joined the marines during world war ii and saw action in the south pacific. after the war, he earned a ph.d from m.i.t. >> so i studied the social security system. >> reporter: those studies led to teaching stints at mit and the university of chicago. in1957, he was named a member of president eisenhower's council of economic advisers. then become to academia at chicago followed by stanford.

13 years, president richard nixon chose schultz to become secretary of labor, the first of four cabinet level offices he would hold. schultz says growing up during the depression steered him into public service. >> i was worried about all the unemployment there was and the loss of production that we needed. and it made a big impression on me. >> reporter: he became secretary of the treasury. after clashing with president nixon in 1974 over wage and price controls, schultz resigned and came back to the bay area to become president of the engineering company bechtel group. in 1981, he became chief economic adviser to president ronald reagan. >> oh, he was my favorite. he was comfortable with himself. and he had deep convictions. and he carried them out. and he had fun. >> reporter: a year later, schultz accepted his most famous job, secretary of state, america's top diplomat. supporters credit schultz and the reagan administration with winning the cold war on the is

pair of teenagers is leaving an artistic imprint on a san francisco neighborhood. 15-year-old eva nussbaum faust and 16-year-old sophia reagan bowen won a design competition from san francisco's school of the arts. their facade designs will be on two new housings in the tenderloin for middle income workers. reagan's design pays tribute to the area's jazz history. >> a lot of famous jazz musicians that played there. and i picked miles davis and kind of based my design off of one of his more famous signs. >> there is a hand reaching down and a hand reaching up. del seymour who lives in the tenderloin really liked that because he thought it showed how

people are reefing up for help but people are also reaching down to help others. >> so significant. the facades will go up in october on the eight story buildings that include 240 housing units. a virtual exhibition debuting today on national black hiv/aids awareness day is raising awareness about the virus's impact on black americans. the national aids memorial has curated dozens of block interests the memorial quilt that tell the stories of black americans whose lives were affected by hiv and aids. >> they're going to see children. they're going to see men. they're going to see women. they're going to see some famous people. they're going see some activists who have done things, even though they were living with hiv and aids to move our dialogue farther along about how insidious hiv and aids has been for the black community. >> the exhibition is online through march, and we have a

vallejo. around the bay shoreline, low to mid-40s. 44 in the city. 43 in oakland. 42 the low in san jose. let's look at tomorrow. the day planner on your monday. sunrise at 7:06 in the morning with the cool start in the 30s and in the 40s. it's a cloudier day, but also in the afternoon, you're going to feel it's a cooler afternoon. closer to where we should be for this time of the year. 4:00, mainly in the mid-50s close to the ocean. low if not mid-60s away from the coast. here is a look at highs on your monday under those mainly cloudy skies. some peeks of sunshine here and there. 58 in san mateo. same in richmond. 57 high in the city tomorrow. 60 in oakland. 62 in san jose and concord. 61 in napa. 64 the high in fairfield. so tomorrow is a dry day. so is tuesday and wednesday. but future weather, we're going fast forward into the second half of the week because that is when we're going to find rain returning to the forecast. well, fast forward the clock to about 5:00 p.m. thursday evening.

and that is what it looks like our first showers begin to return to the forecast. and this next storm that arrives, it's going to linger for part of our friday as well. future weather will fast forward into 8:00 a.m. on friday. there you can see that rain, some snow in the sierra as well. and then another storm looks to arrive next weekend. so saturday and into sunday, here comes another wave of potential rain even more snow in the sierra. and that will bring anywhere from half of an inch to more than an inch of rain in northern california. in fact, rainfall potentially you can see the northern half of the state looking to find the best bet of any wet weather over the next seven days. here is the accuweather seven-day forecast. cloudier and cooler tomorrow. that trend continues into tuesday. a little bit of a sunnier day on wednesday, but then the rain returns late on thursday with showers on friday. and more wet weather next weekend. now abc7 sports with chris alvarez. lynch was voted into the pro football hall of fame last night as player, but says his football
