nowhere. thke hig drift over 37 to th planner. that warm sunshine over the weekend, it is, well, it's gone. we left it in the weekend. 37 to 46 this morning. you can see low to upper 50s by noon. and then not much warming this afternoon. low 50ss to near 60 by 4:00. back down to 49 to 53 by 7:00. a couple cooler days on the way, and then several chances of light storms in the back half of the 7-day. i'll see you with that. here's liz with our first story of the day. >> mike, thank you. abc 7 is working to build a better bay area through the pandemic. part of that is tracking education and the push to get students into the classroom. this week an important step as teachers and staff in alameda county start to get vaccinated.

abc 7 is live at a elementary school. this falls under phase one of the state's vaccine plan? >> reporter: and the county is calling this an important step forward toward getting the schools open for in-person learning. educators are part of the phase 1b tier one. alameda county says it has 325,000 people in this phase to vaccinate. and the limited supply of vaccines. so county officials say educa educators will need to be patient as they work to get to everyone. but teachers are included in this phase. they are advising people in this tier to first contact their health provider about the vaccine, and if that doesn't work, they suggest looking for outreach from your employer or community groups. alameda county school districts are preparing for a return to in-person learning. so they are working independently while this vaccine effort is going on.

each district has its own time line based on the needs in each community. reporting live from fremont, my holyfield. st.s peter and paul church are reporting an outbreak in their church. at least three priests have fallen ill. the church is going to be closed through saturday with all services streamed online on. the san francisco city attorney's office last year sent the archdiocese a cease and desist letter larging the church to stop ordering large masses. in july at least 10 people were infected at a wedding ceremony at the church against public health orders. we were at st. mary's cathedral sunday morning with parishioner night. the state updated the guidelines

for houses of worship for purple and red, they are limited to 25%. and at orange and yellow tiers, 50%. metrics in california show things are improving around the state. a little bit of good news this morning. the number of people hospitalized has dropped below 12,000. a month ago it was nearly 22,000. the 7-day positivity rate now stands at 5.4%. that's a good indicator of the spread of the virus. the state did report more than 15,000 newly diagnosed cases yesterday which is about the daily average for the past week. covid-19 health care heros were honored at the super bowl yesterday. national youth poet laureate amanda gorman mesmerized the nation performing the first ever poem to be read at the game. >> let us charge on with his champions and carry on forth the

firefighters are investiating a boat fire at the bethel island marina. the man who lives aboard the boat is missing. his vehicle is in the parking lot. crews say the living quarters collapsed in on themselves not allowing them to search until hot spots can be put out. the hull of the vote is intact so it is still floating. a father is sharing his story aftern reunio is the van his children were in after the van he was delivering in was stolen. here's abc 7 news reporter. >> thank god. just thank god. >> reporter: jeffrey was

overjoyed to hold his son, one-year-old shawn who was kidnapped along with his four-year-old sister saturday night. both kids are safe and back home. >> when we heard, it was -- it was just e elation. >> reporter: both children found okay in san francisco's bay view district and taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation. they responded by police inside their dad's silver odyssey mini van carjacked on jackson street while he was making a door dash delivery about 8:45. >> they don't know what's going on. they speak mandarin only. i just want my kids back. >> reporter: he surprised the suspect inside his van. there was a brief struggle but the van and suspect got away. >> i heard a scream. my husband thought it was the tv. >> reporter: these neighbors who wanted to remain anonymous helped look for the mini van. >> we started working our way down the hill on the side streets. you know, literally stopping at every silver mini van to check the license plate. >> reporter: a large polic informion about tidsas

tweeted out, and this amber alert was issued to cell phones across the bay area. about four hours later, the kids were found. >> we found the kids. we found the car. and the kids are all right. >> reporter: suspects in the case remain at large the san francisco police chief made this personal appeal. >> to the people involved in this to turn themselves in because this crime was extremely, extremely serious. to kidnap a vehicle and take two small babies away from their parents. >> reporter: in a statement the ceo of door dash said we were appall bid this heinous act and are actively working with law enforcement. as a father myself, i can only imagine how terrifying this incident must have been for many fang and his family. a go fund me account has been established for the fang family. >> the response from the neighborhood, the bay area, the city warms my heart. there's still humanity in all of us, i guess.

condition. 37 to 46 thing. look at this. definitely no more 70s out there like san raphael yesterday. the temperatures in the 50s at noon. we may crack 60 at 4:00 inland. most of us in the 50s with a 53 degrees at 7:00. tracking a couple chances of rain. we'll talk about that coming up. as abc 7 works to build a better bay area. one of the areas we're focusing on is education. san francisco is a key step closer to reopening school campuses. the teacher's union reached a tentative agreement with the school district. abc 7 breaks down the timeline. >> reporter: good morning. we are in alameda county where they are about to start their next phase of vaccinations and that is going to include teachers. that's a big step forward and it is a requirement between -- in a new agreement between the teacher's union and the school district in san francisco.

the teachers will go back if the city is in the red tier and all educators have been vaccinated. teacher vaccinations have not started in san francisco, and the city is in the purple tier. but the union says there is a path to reopening. it's true in the red tier if the county gets the orange tier, we do not require that vaccines are available to teachers. we are not requiring that people who will be still continuing to teach from home be vaccinated, to be clear. it will be the teacher who is will be returning to classrooms. >> this tentative agreement still needs to be agreed upon by the school board. and it comes after the city of san francisco sued the district last week. a lot of pressure on them right now that lawsuits saying the district needs a reopening plan. san francisco is still vaccinating its over 75 population. and health care workers. they have mass vaccine sites open and ready to serve.

officials say they just need more supply. so they have not started vaccinating teachers there yet. but they are going to be starting that here in alameda county. live in fremont, abc 7 news. >> good to know, amy. thank you. starting today sonoma county will vaccinate people 70 and older at pharmacy clinics. 11 safeway stores are offering vaccinations by appointment only. each pharmacy will have the capacity to administer up to 20 vaccinations on week days only. other locations are the sonoma county fairgrounds and sonoma valley high school. and health providers have ramped up vaccination efforts and intend to vaccinate 10,000 people a day starting today in san mateo county. it's at the san mateo event center and by appointment only for eligible patients. traffic there is changing to help manage the influx of visitors. be careful driving if you're in

the area. the nation's top health experts say the vaccine rollout is gaining momentum. the cdc says more than 2.2 million doses were given out saturday. and that brings the 7-day average to 1.4 million shots a day. it's still not enough to meet demand. however, dr. anthony fauci says the supply issue should start to improve in the coming weeks. >> even though there's a clear, clear discrepancy between the demand and the supply, that will get better as we get through february and into march. the cdc is reporting that 9% of americans received at least one shot. officials are counting on the fda authorizing a one-dose john later this month. evidence showed astrazeneca gives just minimum protection against mild and moderate cases of the more contagious variant.

it's not clear if the vaccine protected against severe disease. if it does, south african health officials say they might consider resuming the use. astrazeneca issued a statement saying the study was small and with mostly young, healthy adults and went onto say we believe our vaccine will protect against severe disease caused by the new variant as neutralizing antibody activity is equivalent to that seen with other krv krv vaccines. new this morning, an apartment complex was evacuated overnight because of a carport fire. the san jose fire department says three vehicles were in flames by the time they got to the complex. they got there around 1:00 in the morning. you can see what it looked like as crews were mopping up in this video. two units above the carport were damaged by the fire, but thankfully no one was hurt. and there's new information on another assault and robbery in san francisco. this one in the lone mountain neighborhood. we want to warn you this video

is alarming. a 79-year-old man was punched and robbed in the area on kit rej and turk. sources say the vehicle seen leaving the scene is part of a series involving at least four robbery victims. i know that's hard to watch. sf pd is asking anyone with information to reach out. and new video from oakland shows a 70-year-old grandma knocked to the ground and robbed of her purse. this video is also disturbing. the woman's granddaughter says it happened when her grandma was coming hope from the bank last wednesday. this video was taken in the area of sixth avenue and international boulevard. it comes as the chamber of commerce reports more than 20 assaults and robberies in nearby chinatown in recent weeks. all right. a person of interest. in oakland chinatown attacks that left three seniors injured is expected to appear in court today. investigators say the man is in

custody on an unrelated criminal case oakland city council president is urging oaklanders to support chinatown safety. in one incident a 91-year-old man was knocked to the ground in broad daylight. the councilman is calling for community safety walks. >> we are creating a visible presence of eye bs on the streets, feet on the street to make sure that we're taking care of each other. >> this is part of the china town ambassador program which employs community members and deescalation techniques. the council woman hopes to launch the program soon. happening today, oakland's new police chief is being sworn in. he is taking over for the interim chief starting at 10:00 this morning. the department shared a photo them along with a celebratory chief. the senate impeachment trial of former president donald trump

is set to start tomorrow. jobina has a look at the differences between this trial and the one a year ago. jobina? >> thank you. yes, former president trump is facing a single article of impeachment accusing him of inciting the january 6th riot on the u.s. capitol. the former president will be the first to undergo an impeachment trial after leaving office. he's also the first to be impeached twice. but there are key differences between this trial and the last. first, trump is no longer president and therefore, cannot be removed from office. another contrast from the first trial is no republicans voted to impeach. this time ten gop house lawmakers crossed party lines including liz cheney who stands by that decision. >> we've never seen that kind of an assault by a president of the united states on another branch of government, and that can never happen again. >> it would take 67 senators to vote to convict trump, meaning
