the push to get students back in the classrooms. an important step in alameda county as teachers and staff will start getting vaccinated. amy hollyfield is live in fremont with more on phase 1b vaccinations. good morning, amy. >> hi, good morning. the county says this is an important step toward getting teachers and kids back in the classrooms and getting these schools open. educators are part of the phase 1b tier 1 on the state's vaccination plan. alameda county says there are a lot of people they have to get to in this tier. it has 325,000 people in this phase to vaccinate and, of course, limited supply of vaccines. county officials say educators will need to be patient as they work to get to everyone. they are advising people in this tier to first contact their health provider about the vacce. he suggest looking for outreach from their employer or community

groups. alameda county school districts are preparing to return to in person learning on their own timetable. each district has its own timeline based on the needs in each community, but they're working on getting reopened while the county is working to get teachers here vaccinated and that starts the is week. big progress here. reporting live in fremont hollyfield, abc 7 news. parents are planning to protest for not reopening schools for older students. the district reopened elementary schools to hybrid learning in october and planning to bring sixth graders back in march. there are no plans to bring back older students until this fall, which has many parents filling in the gap with private schools. today's protest is from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the palo alto unified school district offices. key metrics in california show things are improenchg around the state. the number of people

hospitalized has dropped below 12,000. a month ago it was nearly 22,000. the seven-day positivity rate keeps falling and stands at 5.4%. that is a good indicator of the spread of the virus. the state did report more than 15,000 newly diagnosed cases yesterday which is about the daily average for the past week. covid-19 health care heros were honored at the super bowl and national poet amanda gorman performing the first ever poem to be read at the big game. >> let us walk with these warriors, charge on with these champions, and carry forth the call of our captains. we celebrate them by acting with courage and compassion by doing what is right and just for while we honor them, today it is they who every day honor us. >> 22-year-old captured the nation's attention, of course, when she read a powerful and

new overnight, rescuers are looking for survivors after part of a himalayan glacier fell into a river trapping more than 100 people. that sent an avalanche of water, dust and rocks down a mountain which crashed through a dam. at least 180 people are missing right now and 19 people are dead. most of the people who are missing are workers, part of two hydro electric projects working in tunnels. crews have drilled drilds through a mile and a half of tunnel to try to get to them. a father is thanking first responders and the public for helping find his children. they were inside a van that was stolen over the weekend. this is one of the most clicked on stories right now on abc7news.com this morning. you may have gotten the amber alert over the weekend.

person learning. that is one requirement in the new tentative agreement between the san francisco teachers union and the school district. the teachers say they will go back if the city is in the red tier and all educators have been vaccinated. teacher vaccinations have not started in san francisco and the city is in the purple tier. but the union says this is a path to reopening. >> that's true in the red tier. if the county gets the orange tier we do not require that vaccines be available to teachers. so we are not requiring that people who will be still continuing to teach from home be vaccinated to be clear. so it will be the teachers who will be returning to classrooms. >> reporter: this tentative agreement still needs to be voted on by the school board. it comes after the city of san francisco sued the district last week saying the district needs a reopening plan. san francisco is still busy vaccinating its over 75 population and health care

workers so they haven't moved down to that lower tier yet. they do have mass vaccine sites open and ready to serve. officials say the issue is they need more supply. reporting live from fremont, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >tain sonoma thank u. county will vaccinate people 70 and older at county clinics and some safeway pharmacies. 11 stores are offering vaccinations by appointment only. each pharmacy will have the capacity to administer up to 20 vaccinations week days only. others include the fairgrounds, and sonoma valley high school. ambitious benchmarks for san mateo county. health provider ramped up vaccination efforts and plan to vaccinate 10,000 a day starting today. vaccinations will be done at the san mateo event center and by appointment only for eligible patients. traffic there is changing to help manage the influx of visitors so be careful driving if you are in the area.

the nation's top health experts say vaccine rollout is getting momentum. the centers for disease control says that more than 2.2 million doses were given out on saturday. that brings the seven-day average to 1.4 million shots a day, but still not enough to meet demand. however dr. anthony fauci says the supply issue should start to improve. >> even though there's a clear discrepancy between the demand and supply that will get better as we get through february into march. >> the cdc is reporting that 9% of americans have received at least one shot. officials are also counting on the fda authorizing a one dose vaccine from johnson & johnson later this month. south africa is suspending the use of astrazeneca's vaccine. id it ges just minimal protection against mild to moderate illness in cases caused by the more contagious variant that is

dominant in the country. it wasn't clear if the vaccine protected against severe disease. if it does south african health officials will consider resuming its use. astrazeneca issued a statement overnight saying that study was small and mostly with young healthy adults. they also said, quote, we believe our vaccine will protect against severe disease caused by the new variant as neutralizing antibody activity is equivalent to that seen with the other covid-19 vaccines. new this morning an apartment complex in san jose was evacuated overnight because of a carport fire. the san jose fire department says three vehicles were in flames by the time they arrived at the complex around 1:00 a.m. you can see what it looked like as crews were mopping up in this video here. two units above the carport were damaged by the fire. nobody was hurt. and the senate impeachment trial of former president donald trump is set to begin tomorrow. jobina joins us from the live desk with a look at the differences between this trial and his impeachment one year

redwood city, low to mid 40s with fog becoming an issue not only on the ocean side but bayside. the fog in the south bay, east bay, north bay, black ice a possibility in santa rosa with 32 and thick fog where it becomes dangerous. here's a look from sutro tower and you can see some of the fog as you look over towards the east bay. here's one of the few places that doesn't have fog up in the north bay. san rafael, you're giving us our most gorgeous sunrise right now about 44 degrees if you're stepping out. we talked about the fog taking over san jose. look at that from mineta san jose international. pretty foggy and look at this in walnut creek, south on 680, 38 and fog becoming an issue. that's yourte to contend with during the commute. that's mainly this morning. all right. let's take a look and move ahead to thursday. the pattern changes and we have a couple light storms, one on the storm impact scale coming in thursday morning into the afternoon hours. gone by friday and another one coming in saturday evening

through early sunday. you can see there's just not a lot of moisture with these storms, but the possibility of a quarter to a half inch of rain always look forward to that when we're in the middle of a drought. we'll keep an eye on that and we're also keeping an eye on traffic with jobina. have you heard of any issues in the north bay with that freezing fog, jobina. sorry to put you on the spot. i was wondering. >> yeah. no, thankfully no. no issues there. >> good. >> our biggest problem has been at the bay bridge because it's been so busy because we had an trfibr you can see how crowded it is at the toll plaza. traffic traffic jammed from the 880 overcrossing and 80 past powell street and emeryville. head's up if you're coming from the east bay. i want to talk about that fog that mike was mentioning as well. we're going to start in san jose here showing you 101. a gorgeous sunrise over the mountains as well. you can see a little bit of fog lingering here.

new information this morning on an assault and robbery in san francisco. this one in the lone mountain neighborhood. we want to warn you this video is alarming to see. a 79-year-old man was punched and robbed in the area of kittredge and turk on thursday. sources tell abc 7 news that vehicle seen leaving the scene

is part of a series involving at least four robbery victims. sfpd is asking anyone with information to reach out. new video from oakland shows a 70-year-old grandma knocked to the ground and robbed of her purse. this video is also disturbing to see. a woman's grand daughter says it happened when her grandmother was coming home from the bank last week. the video was taken in the area of 6th avenue and international boulevard and this incident comes as the oakland/chinatown chamber of commerce reports 20 assaults and robberies in nearby chinatown in recent weeks. police chief is getting sworn in. laronne armstrong is taking over for interim chief susan manhimer at 10:00 a.m. the department shared a photo with a cake and armstrong is being promoted from deputy chief. and in the north bay marin county supervisors are considering an ordinance for rent increases for the rest of the year. the ordinance would provide

san francisco say that they have reached a tentative agreement with the teachers union to get students back in classrooms. this deal comes after the city of san francisco sued the district last week saying it needed a reopening plan. number two, teachers and staff in alameda county will have the opportunity to get vaccinated starting today. it's part of the county's next phase to get students back in the classroom. number three, starting today health providers are planning to vaccinate more than 10,000 people a day at the san mateo county event center. vaccinations will be done by appointment only. number four, a new way to pay for a tesla. the palo alto company announced this morning that it will soon accept bitcoin. tesla also revealed it has invested more than a billion dollars in the digital currency. interesting. all right. let's take a look at what's going on at sutro tower. you can see the fog overspreading our neighborhoods and that will be around for the commute. that with more high clouds and
