meeting started at 3:00 p.m. and the board voted 7 hours later at 10:00. 5-2 in favor of changing lowell admission's policy. the alumni community and residents of the san francisco bay area and beyond because of the controversy, lowell's status as a top ranked high school has made national news. because of the pandemic, the san francisco school board proposed eliminating merit based admission for one school year but when racist incidents resurfaced at the high school they made the change permanent. half the students are asian, 20% white, 12% latino, 2% african-american. there were ongoing questions and concern busy moving lowell to the lottery system will end or address racism at the school. the commissioner wanted to delay the vote and other board and community members felt the issue of equity and the safety of

black students at the school has been delayed long enough. >> when people say slow it down, we slowed it down for decades. it is time to act. >> i am glad we are not in school right now. if we were i would be afraid for the students safety. >> not saying this is a rushed process. >> what are you witnessing now is our words finally moving in to action. >> jenny lamb was one of the two no votes. >> we need to fight racism, both institutional racism that our black students and families faced but the anti-asian perspective that is also, you know, present. more voices want to be heard. >> and even though the board voted tonight, it is safe to assume that there will be more

discussions about lowell and sfusd. >> i am really devastated. i cannot take my kids to the water. i cannot work on the water. i cannot enjoy it. >> developing news, the cleanup is underway after hundreds of gallons of petroleum spilled into the san francisco bay today. >> thankfully the leak has been stopped at this point. near the long whatever off of point richmond. j.r. stone is live in richmond. what is happening right now? >> reporter: i am standing less than a mile from where the oil spill happened. you can see the emergency vehicles. the majority of them have left. a couple of them still out er th sme d t healthyou are looking at pe that spilled into the san francisco bay and san pablo bay

on tuesday. >> smelled like someone spilled gasoline in front of my house, very, very badly for whole day. >> i smelled it and thought something is going on. >> reporter: something was going on. officials confirmed 600 gallons of petroleum spilled into the water stemming from a leak on richmond's long whatever. the cause, unknown. at one point in the day at least five gallons were leaking every minute. the refinery confirmed the leak has been contained. wildlife that might have been in the water. >> no oiled animals reported at this moment but we have the oil wildlife care network on standby. >> it is a necessary evil and it is not going away any time soon. >> reporter: others say what happened is unacceptable and someone needs to be held
